I may not be a classy dude, necessarily, but there are times when the evening calls for a classy destination. I love the old-school cabaret-Vegas-classy feel of places like the Red Fox Room, Albie's Beef Inn, etc, but in reality those are hipster bars masquerading as Joints Of Distinction. Chez Loma, on the other hand, is the real deal. Classy without being stodgy, old school with out being geriatric. Its a fine line to walk, and its a fine establishment for a night out. First off, from a date perspective, starting the night out with a drive over the bridge is a good start by anyones measure. The restaurant itself is in a beautiful old house of some historical significance. The service is really excellent, and the atmosphere can vary depending on what room you are seated in. They're all good, but I prefer the enclosed patio. The lobster crepes are to die for, the fish dishes are consistently good, and the fillet looks and smells delicious. My wife and I actually have a pact...if we fall off the vegetarian wagon, this is where we do it. Wine selection is killer and sometimes unusual (in a good way) and they also have a full bar. It's not cheap, but it's not as spendy as you might assume, being one of the premier fine-dining establishments on Coronado. In summation, sometimes you've gotta man up, put on your big boy clothes in a non-ironic way, and class up your date. This is the spot to do so. read more

I've passed this place about a gazillion times walking around in the Coronado area "Awe, look what a cute little restaurant!" and I finally got the chance to check it out with a girlfriend over the weekend. We both got the pre fixe menu and purposely ordered differently so that we could try everything and it was all amazingly perfect. The food was all just very fresh and well prepared: Lobster Bisque: just rich enough without being heavy and with just enough seasoning to bring out the sweetness of the seafood. Smoked Salmon Tartare: delicious with a wonderful fresh "bite" to the fish and accompanied with sweet/sour cucumbers. Filet: perfectly cooked medium-rare with a beautiful red wine sauce on top of a bed of mashed potatoes. Halibut "Oscar": a fantastically cooked piece of fish with sweet whole pieces of crab on top drizzled with Bearnaise all on top of mashed potatoes and accompanied by steamed asparagus. Fallen Chocolate Souffle: A decadently rich chocolate wet dream. Caramel Custard: Like a flan, but with a rich creamy, almost cheesecake like texture. We honestly couldn't decide if anything was better than the other. It just would have depended on what you were in the mood for. Service was comfortable and surprisingly not stuffy. Couldn't say much for the rest of the dining room that night, however: "Ginger! Please tell Edmund about that absoluuutely deviiiiine little excuuuuursion we took to..." "Oh, Francis, that is the most iiiiinteresting thing I've heard in years!!!" Insert forced/fake laughter throughout and that's the conversation we heard all night. Overall, it's quaint, but the inside is starting to see some wear. For two girls (one single) out for a night on the town, this wasn't the place to pick for any good eye candy. We were easily the youngest in the restaurant the entire night by at least 15 years, but I can see this as a pretty romantic place. The patio looked like it would have been nice if it weren't for the blustery, rainy night. But as far as service and food were concerned, this was probably some of the best french food I've had in San Diego. The serving sizes were very hearty too. Fucking Delicious! Wife and I came here for a date night last Friday. I really liked how the restaurant was in an old historic house on Coronado. I like that style so much more than the flashy downtown styled eateries. I had a hard time ordering since I wanted to order everything on the menu, and would have if I wanted to go for the Fatbastard look and/or had Oprah's wallet. I went for the Fixed Menu 2, which came with an awesome Lobster Bisque, Crab crusted Halibut, and a choice of desert. The halibut came with some mashed potato's, asparagus, and some strange yet tasty sauces. When It came time to order the desert, I told my wife to order what she wanted because I was stuffed. She told me she was going to order the Ginger Bread and that I wold want some. She was totally right, I couldn't stop eating it. Our server told us that most people come back for that alone. Admittedly I waffled between 2 & 3 stars for this place, but at the end of the day I hold nicer restaurants like this to a higher standard than I would, say, a Red Lobster. Booked a reservation here for a romantic evening... and left a little disappointed. For starters, we were sat at the most awkwardly-placed table in the whole joint; against the wall so you had no elbow room, right by the entrance and another doorway, so there was lots of traffic.... it just wasn't the intimate dinner I hoped for. Secondly, it took FOREVER for our waiter to intro himself. By time he got to us, we had decided our wines, appetizer, and entrees, and we are not decisive people. Wine took a long time to arrive, and was never offered a second glass - had to flag the guys attention for a refill. And that was the theme for the evening - everything took an absurdly long time to come out; appetizers, dinner, everything. It's sad, because it ended up making the dinner really stressful, instead of relaxing and enjoyable; we had sunset boating reservations and had to leave by 7:45... and we sat at 6:15. By time our main meals came, we really had to scarf them down. I even gave the waiter my CC half-way through eating without even seeing a bill and just told him to run it. That's a little absurd for a party of 2 that made reservations & allowed an hour and a half for dinner. (Not to mention we didn't even have an opportunity to order dessert, which we both wanted.) For a romantic $125+ dinner for two, i expect much more in all regards. Simple as that. (I will say the food is good.... the mussels appetizers was one of the better things we had on the trip. We were drawn here by the menu and the ratings. The wait staff were very helpful and friendly. The food, however, in our opinion fell short. The frazee salad was good, the French onion soup however was uninspired. The duck breast was ok and the halibut was just ok. The thing that was somewhat unsettling was that the food was not piping hot. I am sorry to rate this establishment so low. Clearly it does well and seemed to have a lot of regulars. As a past patron of this establishment, I would have given 5 Stars!!! Last Saturday 6/20 was a huge disappointment. First off, it was our 23rd wedding anniversary and when I made the reservations, I specifically requested for a table near the window, not the bar. Secondly, it is under new management; and, the house manager Sabrina "is no longer with Chez Loma" and my favorite entrée, the duck a l'orange was no longer on the menu. No big deal so I ordered the salmon instead. Food was definitely 5 starts however I give a big fat ZERO for NO social distancing! Some woman who I assumed was part of the new owner/management was chatting up with a table of 4, less than 4' both parties without masks. Then the hostess seated a loud, drunken party of 5 beachgoers from 90210 right next to our table, 2' from my husband's chair! We were soooo angry that we quickly finished our meal and left! My boyfriend and I went here last night for our anniversary. I was so excited from all the reviews and Stylist from Rinse, she is amazing!)giving it rave reviews. And it fell nothing short, it went above and beyond my expectations. First of all, the staff is wonderful! Since it was a Tuesday it wasn't that busy, so Josh(our waiter)gave us alot of attention and checked in often without being too pushy. He was a great server and so so nice! The food, oye, what can I say! Delicious? Mouthwatering? Scrumptious? I don't think any of those words can sum it up. The bread with their roasted garlic, tomatoes and oil olive was so wonderful. The bread alone was a good enough meal for me. I started off with the lobster bisque, everyone was right about it. It was so tasty. The lobster and crab wasn't overbearing and left the most delicious after taste, I really could eat that for my whole meal there. My boyfriend got the Normandy onion soup, which was so sweet and perfect, and I'm not even that big of an onion soup fan but this was just so so good. For the main course I got the "Oscar" Halibut, you don't even know how excited I was for this! The halibut was cooked beautifully, so moist. The crab cake on top of the halibut was a perfect touch! I cant even explain how in love I am with this halibut. I was talking to Josh about it for a few minutes and he said he believes its local halibut, but I knew there was no way San Diego could harvest halibut that good, and of course it was Alaskan. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and smooth, they melted in your mouth and complimented the whole dish. I would strongly recommend getting the halibut if you're a sea food fan. My boyfriend got the duck and couldn't stop moaning after every bite, he made that plate so clean after he was done. I had one bite and I agreed it was exquisite. The trio of sauces was unbelievable, so so so tasty. For dessert I got the ginger bread and my boyfriend got the chocolate bread pudding. All the Yelpers were right, the gingerbread was amazing. It wasn't heavy at all but yet so rich and full of flavour, a great ending to my meal. I didn't have any of the bread pudding because I was so full. My boyfriend said it was so yummy. Overall this place went above and beyond my expectations, it was so good that we are going back on Valentines day to treat his parents since they have been wanting to go for a while. read more

This is not a recent review. I came here last Valentines Day with the GF. I wanted to take her somewhere nice and fancy to express my love, and Chez Loma seemed to meet the criteria. Plus, she loves French food. I thought the environment was great. It's a nice little house converted into a restaurant. We were seated in the "front porch" area. I could also see that we were probably the youngest people there, the next oldest people being 30+ years older than us. I ordered the escargot and the duck dish. The GF had lamb. I enjoyed the escargot and its garlic taste. Both dishes were excellent and tasty. The two sauces on the duck dish perfectly complemented the poultry. I was pleased with my meal. However, the GF was indifferent to her lamb, although I found it good. That's when she realized she didn't really enjoy lamb all that much. But all preferences aside, they were definitely awesome. Of course this place is pricey, but you know what you're getting yourself into when you come to a place like this. An appetizer, 2 main dishes, and a bottle of sparkling water came out to a little under $80. But it being Valentines day, I wasn't as sad to pay that much for a meal. (I am a poor, starving college student) Also, our waiter was very good. He was prompt and helpful. The atmosphere is very quaint. By quaint I don't mean loveable in an eclectic and tacky way. The wallpaper, furniture and namely the Victorian building itself is very warm and inviting. I went here last night with a dozen girlfriends for my birthday. My birthday was on a Tuesday this year so we took advantage of the $25 prix fixe menu served at any time. I was happily surprised that they added the beef bourguignon to that menu. The french onion soup was more sweet than salty. It had a lot of cheese. The main course is what wowed me. I loved the beef bourguignon's flavor. They also use islands of mashed potatoes instead of typical stewed potatoes, which I liked more. The crunchy bread they serve went extremely well to soak up the bountiful sauce. The gingerbread dessert was mediocre. The flan-esque dessert was a little better. The chocolate cheesecake was the best dessert option and I don't care for cheesecake normally. The waitstaff was excellent for a large party. Our drinks were always full. This place is wonderful. I came here with my fiance during the week and I do think it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in San Diego. Chez Loma isn't quite on the beach and not quite next to the Del. It's hidden away in its own awkward little bend off of Orange Ave, which is a good thing as the traffic from pedestrians and other diners coming in and out is low. Our server was very friendly and helpful. After appetizers, a bottle of wine and three course meals we were stuffed full of delicious food and a large chunk of change down the hole, but it was worth it. :) Try to get reservations on Tuesday night or between 5-7pm. They have two cheaper Prix Fixe options during these slots. read more

Came here with my gal for her work holiday shindig, ordered a salmon dish with a crab cake appetizer and for desert I ordered their ginger bread. Now, let me tell you that the crab cakes were a sign of things to come, these cakes were full of flavor and melted in the mouth, probably some of the best I've ever tasted. Next came the horseradish crusted salmon, I mean seriously, this too not only melted in the mouth but I had no idea a cut of fish that usually already has a great flavor could give my palette such a rush ! The horseradish "crust" took it to the next level. The dish came with some grilled veggies in a tomato sauce that also tickled the tongue and was accompanied by a fluffy wild rice and a mystery sauce that I could not get enough of. The deal breaker from Chez was this GINGER BREAD ! I had thought, "oh gingerbread, how festive." I'm a fan of those cookies that look like little people or animals and what not but I had no idea of what I was about to experience here. Chez gingerbread cake is unlike anything gingery you have experienced, no joke ! I don't know what kind of magic is thrown into the mix back in that kitchen but "hot damn", This cake is off the charts man ! With it's gooey ginger topping and a flavor that just goes beyond any gingerbread fantasy you could ever imagine. I would go to Chez again just to have a slice of that cake and some French roast coffee although, I don't think they do just desert and coffee. If you want to impress your guy or gal or, maybe a group of friends and business pals with some French cuisine in one of the coolest areas in town, Head over that big blue bridge and getcha some Chez Loma and really do yourself a favor and ask about that gingerbread desert. Had a reservation for 7:45 and was running late because of taxi issue from the hotel, Marriott Resort Coronado Island (do not stay there if you are looking for romance, not a 4 star hotel, 3 at best). Concierge called the restaurant and told them that we were running late and would that be ok. They stated that it would not be a problem as they have a 15 minute grace period. Still waiting for cab and the concierge called again and was told that we would not be able to sit in dining room but they would set up nice table in bar. We didn't get there until 8:15. When we arrived the host a very young girl just stated that we don't have a table and just gave us a blank look and didn't offer any help . We asked for the manager and a lady, not sure if one of the owners came with a look like you snooze you loose with same type of attitude. She stated that we have a 15 minute grace period and that we could not be seated. I explained about the concierge at the hotel called to let them know the issue and they would take care of us. For whatever reason she really seemed like she could give a sh*t. I asked if she could set up a table in the bar and she said she would. We were really dressed up and the bar was really a small space not conducive to having a nice dinner. So we left and walked over to Valducies. My biggest problem was that there was no explanation. They could've explained that we had to give your table away because you didn't arrive on time and that there was simply no room. Or we are already past our last seating, etc. When you're in the service business it's all about accommodating the customer and if you can't just be nice about it and not like you're doing me a favor for eating at your place. We ended up walking next door to Vigilucci's Ristorante . They have a great dining room but we ended up sitting in a nice booth in the bar where they had a great piano player. Everything happens for a reason, we had good Karma. It was romantic and the service was incredible we were catered to in every way by the staff. Food was incredible as was the wine. Hope the owners read this review so they can put a lot more customer service in their philosophy! Oh yeah, FYI we ended up spending about $250 for two. Absolutely incredible french restaurant located in a charming converted Victorian home. The food is delightful and the service is nothing short of exceptional. I can't believe I don't remember our server's name (I was sick and had to run a marathon the next morning), but she had long blonde hair and was darling as can be. If you have her as your server there's not a chance you won't fall in love (with her, the food, or the restaurant). She is so incredibly attentive and absolutely made our experience. It's a small operation - with no bartender and the servers preparing their own drinks. The home-made pate was exquisite and the lamb was some of the best I've ever tasted. It's a bit on the pricier side but it's worth every penny. I can't wait to return the next time that I'm in Coronado. This place is truly a gem!!! read more

We've loved Chez Loma for 20 years and anxious to go try under new ownership and management. Huge disappointment. Service was ok. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare. When my enter was served I was shocked. About 3/4 of an inch thick with fat and gristle. Thinking it was the flank steak by mistake I asked for our waiter. Before he returned the manager and owner came by to see how everything was. I told her I ordered the filet mignon and got this by mistake and it wasn't even edible. She said it was a filet but not mignon and said trouble getting beef turned and walked away. Next the waiter returned and I explained explained the same thing. He said I was right that I had ordered the filet mignon and was going to talk to the chef. He returned saying that it was a filet. On my plate we're several bites that you could not chew let alone swallow. He apologize and said there was nothing he could do but offered a Free desert which we declined. Then he brought the bill. The steak was $42.00. With an attitude of indifference and attitude this restaurant will not survive. Rather than making excuses they should have offered a different entree. My sister and I came to Chez Loma for their $25 three course meal and it was worth every penny. One of the best deals you can get at such a nice restaurant. Canard Rôti:I loved this dish. The serving size was huge and the duck was cooked p e r f e c t l y. I've eaten duck many times and I don't think I've tried duck that was as tender as Chez Loma's dish--it practically melts in your mouth. The cherry and orange sauce its' served in pairs wonderfully and the sweetness of the fruit made the entire meal feel filling but light. Boeuf Bourguignon: I liked the Beef Burgundy but I wasn't sold on the dish. I felt like the veggies they used in it (particularly the zucchini and eggplant) could have been more tender. Some pieces of the beef were cooked really well but others were slightly tough. The mashed potatoes its' served with is delicious though. The sauce has a pretty thick, corn starch consistency but I was ok with it. Soupe á l'Oignon: Their onion soup wasn't too bad. I tend to like onion soup in a broth that isn't too thick but that's just me. Nevertheless, it's still delicious. Creme Caramel: I love cream and sugar anything so this dessert was right up my alley! The flan was definitely overcooked a little cause the bottom formed a thick "eggy" layer and the consistency of the dessert was a little grainy. BUT, the top of the flan that didn't get overcooked was silky and oh so good! The fact that it was overdone didn't bother me though. Nothing gets in between me and my desserts...especially if the dessert consists of creamy anything. Overall, I loved the food. I think for $25, you get a 3 course meal with fairly large portions that tasted great and left my sister and I stuffed. Our waiter was Ian and he did a wonderful job--really great service that just made the experience so much better. And the fact that the restaurant is in a house just made the dinner so intimate and cozy! My very favorite restaurant on the island. I love the Duck - it is just delicious. The wine flights are fun, and are excellent quality wines. A perfect afternoon starts with a bike ride on Coronado, Cocktails at the hotel Del, followed by dinner here. It has classy atmosphere without being stuffy or pretentious. The ginger bread dessert is also something that I love (and I am not a dessert girl) with its warm caramel goodness - yum. Their $25 early dinner menu is terrific value. read more

I hate to rehearse one of my mother's most wearisome sentences, but this time around it fits perfectly: I could really do much better at home. The worst of it was the mains - we had lamb and salmon and both dishes came with the exact same side and it wasn't even very good, (it's not like the chef thought he really had a strike there and felt the urge to slap it on each and every dish coming out of the kitchen). Hello, it's C Salmon. Yesterday evening I was able to have dinner with my mother here at Chez Loma. I ordered the duck tacos and my mom had ordered the beef bourguignon. First off, the service was great. We waited about 10 minutes for our order and the food came hot and ready to eat. My first impression of the beef bourguignon was "hm, this isn't much". But hey, I mean quality over quantity.. right? The flavor was immaculate as well as the whipped (mashed) potatoes. The dish was quite yummy, but the price of $39 seemed a bit high. As for the duck tacos, it was alright. Nothing special but it didn't taste bad or anything. The mango pico de gallo added a nice tangy touch and for $17, I think the price is adequate. The flour tortillas were a bit crunchy and not soggy (just the way I like it). Overall, I think that the place is cute for a glass of wine and some appetizers, but if you're looking for a quality meal I suggest trying someplace else. read more

Even though it was quite busy and she was the only server she checked on us often and has a super friendly personality. I saw a another review about that cappuccino being too hot. That just sounded ridiculous. I wouldn't want a cold cappuccino. Mine was delicious. Our food came out in a timely manner and was delicious as well. I found Chez Loma after hours of searching for an affordable meal at a good restaurant. I realized Chez Loma fit this criterium when I stumbled upon their "Early Dinner Menu." This is an excellent prix fixe menu that is offered everyday from 5 to 6 and all-night on Tuesdays. Not being nearly old enough to begin eating at 5:30, I chose the Tuesday option. As we walked up, we were instantly impressed by the old style friendliness of the building. Exactly what we were hoping for, the opposite of downtown trendiness! We started with a bottle of the Rutherford Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, which the girlfriend enjoyed very much. This made me happy as she's the white aficionado, not myself. We coupled this with our prix-fix appetizers. First off, I must say how hard of a decision this was for me. I was forced to pick between the caesar salad and onion soup, two personal favorites of mine. I went with the Soupe á l'Oignon, as they call it. I like to eat onion soup whenever given the opportunity and this was no mistake. The cheese was draped around the edge of the crock just perfectly and the flavor was excellent. The main course led me to uncharted waters, as I had never tasted duck before but was told that it was the house specialty and a can't miss selection. After these recommendations from fellow yelpers and our waitress I decided to go for it. It turned out amazing and had wonderful flavor with the cherry and orange flavors. Very delicious and I would recommend it to anyone, whether or not you've had duck before. The girl on the other had went with the salmon and neither her nor I can remember if she enjoyed it. Being a pescaterian, she eats a lot of salmon. So, try that knowing it wasn't memorable in a good way or bad. Overall, this place is a VERY nice option for Coronado. Loved the feel, the service, and my duck. Although, it was weird when the chef came out and greeted every table but ours. Guess we weren't regal enough. EAT UP! read more

Blech. How can people like this place? I've been here twice and both times the experience was more like a chili's than anywhere nice. The medium rare steak was cooked to a crisp, the beet salad was like eating cardboard, and the shrimp cocktail had a couple of shrimp swimming in cocktail sauce. The French onion soup was good. The beet salad at Herb and Wood is so much better. Drive the 15 minutes. Totally worth it to avoid this disaster. read more

My wife and I stopped by on a Friday night after making a reservation just an hour earlier on Opentable. It took a few minutes for them to seat us when we arrived, but we got an excellent table in the first room, so I'm not really complaining. The mussels were great, as was my entree bouillabaisse. My wife's Chilean sea bass was warm, but the accompanying puree was cold. Naturally, we switched plates, but I was a little sad because I really liked my dish. The salads sounded better on the menu than they turned out on the plate. Somehow the ingredients didn't come together and so it ended up quite underwhelming. That said, the restaurant is really romantic, the wine was great and the service was attentive and helpful, and all plates were spaced out appropriately so as to give us plenty of time to enjoy. My wife and I dined here with another couple on a Tuesday evening - they have a three course prix fixe dinner Tuesdays (and between 5:00 and 5:45 other evenigns) for $24.95 per person - considering the quality of the food we had this is a great deal! The first course gives you a choice of a Caesar salad (large piece of lettuce with a nice dressing (not mixed at the table) and excellent bread crumbs), a house salad (nice, but nothing special) or French onion soup (my recommendation - the broth was sweet and rich, the onion flavor was there without being too strong, it was not drowned in cheese, and the bread managed to hold its consistency through a leisurely first course.) The second course options were duck in a cherry sauce (Fabulous! I'd highly recommend this!), a salmon preparation (good, but the salmon wasn't of the high quality I'm used to in the Seattle area), and beef burgundy (which I didn't taste, but our dinner companion claimed it was quite wonderful). Dessert options are more than they print on the menu - I believe they present you with three choices, but our waitress said we could have anything other than the cheese plate or the sampler plate. I had the fallen chocolate souffle with an espresso - the souffle was fabulous, but the espresso was barely warm. My wife tried the bread pudding and declared it delicious, and the other couple shared a creme brulee, which disappeared quickly enough that it must have been great! Along with dinner we ordered two "flights" of wine, one of five whites (including a champagne) and one of five reds. This was a great opportunity to sample some wines we were unfamiliar with, and to taste how different wines went with duck, salmon or beef. The listing for the white flight included a wine we did know and were not fond of, and the waiter said they'd be happy to replace it with any other wine they serve by the glass. In fact he said they could put together a custom flight for the same price (24.95 for 5 3-ounce samples) of any of the reds or whites they serve by the glass, something to keep in mind if there are several wines you'd like to try other than those listed for the flights. The service was wonderful - attentive and accomodating, without ever seeming pushy of over-friendly. We ate in the covered patio, and spent almost three hours there without feeling like they wanted to push us out to turn the table (on the other hand, there were plenty of empty tables this Tuesday, so there was no reason for that to be an issue.) The old house the restaurant is set in is charming and just enough off the main drag to keep traffic noises away. Dinner for two, from the prix fixe menu, along with the wine flights and an espresso came to about $90, and I think we got more than we paid for. I would not hesitate to eat here again (actually, I'd look forward to it!), and would certainly recommend it! read more

This place is so awesome the food is Fabulous. I dine every visit to Coronado and recommended to to my friends and people in the Island. I recommend sitting in the bar it is so comfortable and the bartender Cheryl makes it so enjoyable and she is very knowledgeable on wines. Red wine was served much to warm (should have been chilled). The wine corks and bottle necks were infested with gnats. Why present yourself as a French Bistro yet your cutlery is inexpensive and made in China. The duck dish was average (I've had better). My couscous was lukewarm. My husband ordered the salmon dish yet what was delivered to the table was Chilean Sea Bass. Perhaps the kitchen was having an off night. The bread and butter and beet salad were the only thing palatable about this less than stellar meal. Would we return.... probably not. read more

Cute, nice, but not a wower. Way better than Rhinoceros around the corner. I didn't like that my wine came in a carafe to be poured into my glass at the table...just bring me a glass of wine. The lobster crepe was fabulous, and the cassoulet was yummy and plenty for two to share. Nice dining room atmosphere. read more

I Read all the reviews and think this place is totally over rated. Had the pre-fix and was not really impressed. The dessert seemed like it was out of a frozen costco cheese cake with some chocolate drizzle. I think the duck was good, but way too salty. The Beef dish was SWIMMING in gravy and we had tiny chucks of meat. I compared it to the picture on yelp and our dish looked like cafeteria slop in comparison. We went pretty early so I guess the flowers and candle light is reserved for the later crowd. The interior is a bit dingy. . .perhaps like an ugly date it looks much better in the dark. I wouldn't say this place was horrible. . . I just would prefer more well presented french food and something more fresher tasting. I went to try this place at the pre-fix to see if I would come back and pay the full price. Instead, I suppose the pre-fix is the economy version and not really impressive. Heavy sauces and nothing too sophisticated is my impression. read more

Coronado, city landmark and french cuisine all rolled into one? JACKPOT. The restaurant is elegant yet simple. Its a historical landmark so you know its there is intrisic charm. Pontificating about the world's problems seems effortless here over a bottle of wine. A brilliant place to take a meaningful date. I had the prix fixe menu 1. Onion soup / salmon / chocolate bread pudding. I had to rate it a 4 stars because although each of my dishes were really good, they werent the best Ive had. Not to mention, they didnt offer Beaujolais as a wine choice. Sorta questions how 'authentic' this place is. Bummer! read more

Chez Loma, WOW. Where do I begin.... I made reservations just in case (which turned out to be a good thing). This place is very small and I would suggest in doing the same. It is very classy restaurant, and just a wonderful atmosphere and experience. And lucky enough we just so happen to come on the best day you possibly could, Wednesday, which is half off bottle wines. And they do carry quite a few. We ordered a bottle of Chateau Puy-Blanquet St. Emilion Grand Cru (2010). This may very well be the best darn bottle of wine I have every had. From here we ordered Escargot, Tartare Of Beef, and Onion soup. Again where do I begin. I absolute love escargot (only if made right) and boy does this place deliver the goods. Beef tartare was also amazing, and the Onion soup is a must have. For third course (I always consider wine as the first) we ordered Chilean Sea Bass and Boeuf Bourguignon. The sea bass was cooked perfectly the only thing that I was not found of was the Tarragon, (not a huge fan even though I do understand the complexity it build with fish). But the Boeuf Bourguignon, not this is something to die for. Amazing flavors rush throughout your palate. Overall amazing experience and would return on a frequent basis. read more

3/15/08: I came back for seconds. This time with six other people. This time, I had the scallops for appetizers, Canard Roti for entree and a glass of Grahams port for dessert. My friends had the prix fixed menu - the filet mignon, mostly. Darn beef eaters. Throughout the meal, we enjoyed a Chateau Preuillac ($65) and my personal bottle (Captain's Reserve Syrah from Rubicon Estate). They were impressed by great food and excellent service from Carolyn (co-owner) and William (our garcon). I am definitely returning with 8 people next time and adding 2 more stars. 7/11/07: Closely situated near the corner of the street, the restaurant brings an air of intimacy for your dates. Charming and relaxing, it eases one into dinner. With a glass of red wine, it was perfect to celebrate my friend's birthday. As I took every bite of my Escargot Puff Pastry and Grilled Pork Chops with a Sherry sauce, my stomach wanted more. And, more wine. Towards the end of each dish, my tongue was parched from the saltiness. Yet, I enjoyed the butteriness of the Pastry and a bit of sweetness of the sherry sauce. Possibly the best eggs benedict I've ever tasted. That said, after we finished eating, I went across the street to the diner to eat the rest of what I would consider a proper breakfast. Sorry, but the portions here are just ... they don't cut it. Otherwise, the service was fantastic and we loved the feel here of the history and the overall experience. We're going to come back and try something off the evening menu because it appeared to be quiet the spread, but reviewing this place only on breakfast ... I want to give this place 4 stars, but I just can't bring myself to it. My wife and I ate here after a coworker raved about the food and intimate setting. So I went in with expectations that were not met. The setting was quaint and romantic, but the food was not as great as I expected it to be. Don't get me wrong it was good, but not great. We ordered the 5 - 6 pm dinner specials. I had the beef and my wife had the duck. I do not recommend the beef, it was a bit overcooked and dry. The duck was very well done and accompanied by some great sauces. Considering all the great eating places San Diego has to offer, this place is near average. If you're looking for great food and a great dining experience, keep this place on your list, but keep looking as well. read more
