Oh man, what a gem I stumbled in to on Sunday afternoon and all thanks to their "oyster hour". What a special little unassuming spot that highlights the best of California cuisine. With $1.50 oysters, it's almost like a no lose situation at this point so honestly, give it a try. That being said, oysters aren't the star of the show and that's crazy coming from someone who can eat 3 dozen oysters in one seating. Get the crab toast, it's magical. Get the happy hour burger, the sesame seed bun is the winner. The most memorable part of the meal?? The squash salad dish that was cooked to perfection. This was something I couldn't stop going back and honestly, I wanted to lick the plate clean. I would be mistaken though if I didn't mention the service. I truly wish I remembered her name, but she was the only one working that day (her name started with a K). She was so great and handled the whole floor like a pro. Easily missed when walking by since it's just a door with a small table outside next to a fire station which was more eye catching -at least for me. Service was friendly from beginning to end. Seated quickly, first seating so everything was perfectly set up and clean. Love the feel of this restaurant, the simplicity reminds me of cafes in France. Oysters were on point and quick, raw scallop makes for a great pic, and crab toast is worth ordering multiples! I skipped the carbs by substituting lettuce for toast. I had an amazing meal here. The food was complex and had so many flavors that all work well together! The Calabrian chilis were a small side item on the burrata, the tartare AND the grilled prawns, even then I still couldn't get enough of them. Spicy but not overwhelming made the dishes extra exciting. Each dish was delicious in its own way. Nothing too heavy and I washed it all down with a bottle of white wine. The service was great too. We didn't realize they had oyster hour 5-630 pm from Wednesday - Sunday! Really cool, def took advantage and ordered oysters ($1.50 each!) + bread and butter to start. For mains, we got steak frites and the salmon. I didn't catch the server saying both would be served medium well, but I wish I had cos I think I would've preferred my salmon a little more cooked. I really wanted to love this place, but I left a bit disappointed and still hungry. When I walked in, it wasn't very crowded, and I came during happy hour specifically for the oysters. I ordered the cauliflower and the steak frites as well. Despite the light crowd, the server barely checked on me after dropping off the food, and it was hard to get her attention when I needed anything since she was mostly in the back. The oysters were amazing, but the cauliflower was soggy with no crunch. The steak frites was actually really good, but it took way too long to arrive. For the price, the portions were also on the smaller side. I even considered ordering more food, but with how long everything took, I didn't want to wait even longer. What really bothered me was the slow pace of service. I ordered before another table, yet they received their food first, which was frustrating. I ended up spending more time waiting than actually eating. Overall, I'd only recommend coming here for the oysters as they were the highlight. An intimate dining experience in Coronado - it isn't a super fancy, aesthetic type restaurant. But it has heart and the food was good. We got the oysters and a glass of wine to start. The oysters were on the brinier side, so if you prefer a more creamy taste, this might be a skip. We also got the bread and the potato croquettes. Both were delicious, but the bread really got us! They had two different butters, one herb and one that was more red peppery. They paired well with the brioche. We ended with the steak frites which were good, but the steak was definitely a smaller portion than we thought. Not the most welcoming when first entering. Absolutely wonderful! From start to finish. We enjoyed every moment dining here. From the view, to the ambience to the delicious food! We sat outside and it is definitely a must visit! The service was great and we truly enjoyed our time here. The only dish we were not a fan of was the ROASTED BEET SALAD. The beets were so yummy, and all the ingredients were great, however...the bitterness of the arugula (which I eat often) overpowered the entire salad, imo. If they mixed in additional greens and or added a drizzle of honey or a balsamic reduction, it would've been perfect! So worth it! We had such a great dinner there with friends. The place used to be butcher shop and they kept the decor very minimalistic which was fine. The seats could use cushions since the ones we sat on were metal. Again, not a big deal but could elevate the experience. The inside is intimate, they can only hold 34 people in the restaurant. They could use more baffles to help with the sound. Even with this, I am giving them 5 stars. The food was amazing and the staff were great. There were only two people and they were on it. Scallops and oysters - so fresh and the sauce the scallops were in was light and refreshing. Brussel sprouts- the BEST! The sausage with it was fantastic and they were perfectly cooked. Ribeye- not on the menu. Very tender. The sauce was good but a bit salty. To be fair, we don't use a lot of salt on any of our food and our friends loved it. Coronado Island in San Diego is a wondrous community where you can feel both a part and detached from the city. Taking one of the highest highways I've ever been to reach this island, the views from all corners of Coronado can be spectacular, especially for romantic moments when the sun rises and sets. However, usually in small communities on the water the price for entertainment and food can be tremendous. Luckily, there is a restaurant who knows you're looking for delicious seafood without destroying your mood and wallet. Let me tell you why Jolie is worth checking out at a very certain time. Jolie is located just a few minutes walk away from the ferry stop in Coronado. It sits neatly next to a facade of what looks to be a historical building. At first when you walk in you think the decor would be more ornate, but inside is a very minimalist presentation. Concrete floors with gray walls, a simple counter near the kitchen, and large steel shelves against one wall to hold wines and supplies makes this space feel very much like it's more pop up than permanent restaurant. It's also such a shame Jolie is so close to the water but the only natural light coming in is from the front entrance. A space so open as Jolie's dining room floor would benefit from more of the warm natural light coming through. However, ambience might be one thing but the best part of Jolie is the happiest of all happy hours: Oyster Hour. On Wednesdays to Sundays from 4 PM to 6 PM Jolie has a menu allowing you to enjoy a great selection of seafood at discounted prices. We're talking a chef's selection of different oysters for $1.50 each or Peruvian scallops at $3.50 each. Their crab toast, packed to the brim with crab meat, can be enjoyed for $17. Even hot items like Filet o Fish sliders or their house burger is available for discount during Oyster Hour. And if you're wondering if they skimp on the portions because the price is low then look no further than my photos. You can see they are not petite bites and each are presented beautifully. They do have other items on their full menu such as steak frites or Bluefin tuna and coming during Oyster Hour might give you the resolve to try these items since you saved so much. After eating what could only be described as a fisherman's catch worth of seafood it was satisfying to see my wallet only slimmed down instead of exhausted to zero. The service was kind and felt similar to what you might experience during lunch time at a bistro near the water in New York. I know, very specific, but what I'm trying to say is service was perfectly fitting for this joint. If you do decide to come to Coronado and looking for a delicious meal to capture the essence of this community I recommend coming to Jolie during Oyster Hour and eat to your heart's content. Jolie is a must try! We started with the crab toast and the bread & butter. Wow! The bread was perfectly toasted, soft and flavorful. It was paired with the most delicious pesto and chili whipped butter. The crab toast was creamy and tasty. For the main dish I ordered the Steak Frites which was the most amazing wagyu I've ever had! Decided to book this spot since we visited the Hotel Del for the Oz Light show. Had a reservation for a party of 4 on Friday and made it for happy hour. We ordered quite a few dishes to share: to start - 6 oysters, crudo, parker rolls, potato croquet, crab toast, wagyu with bone marrow and fried cauliflower. The server said she would space the dishes out for us then we ordered. Also ordered steak frites, prawns, sea bass and brussel sprouts. They were out of the tomahawk for 2, wasn't expecting that! Unfortunately all the food came out warm, crispy cauliflower was not crispy, crudo slices so tiny, the best dish was the wagyu/bone marrow and prawns. The dinner took about 2.5 hours which was way too long. The interior was very simple, we felt we were in their storage room and not a restaurant. The servers were nice and attentive. My husband and I celebrated our 11th anniversary here, and it was such a great experience--surprising in the best way. We started with the melon shrimp salad, which we found out recently won an award--and it definitely deserved it. For our mains, my husband had the steak frites and I had the tuna steak. Both were excellent--cooked perfectly and really flavorful. Wine list was also well thought out and I was excited to see many different regions represented. The service stood out just as much as the food. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and seemed to genuinely care about making sure we had a good time. this establishment is a joke. you walk in to a huge cement room with zero decor other than some sound buffering pads slapped to the wall.. that aren't even hung straight, they are just slapped up there in random splotches. there are no candles, no tablecloths other than a dish towel runner draped over the two-tops. there is no art on the walls, they have no flowers, they have cold and stiff metal chairs, and metal racks along one wall that should be in a storage room. i've had better racks for storage in the warehouse at Pier 1 Imports than that whack setup. this is was an epic level of visual atrocity. the food in california and coronado is usually amazing. not here. alleged wagyu sirloin chopped into mealy little chunks paired with a heap of crinkle-cut fries that were obviously bought frozen. who cuts WAGYU into CHUNKS?! and they're too lazy to cut their own frites? and they serve it with a little metal cup of heinz ketchup.. literally zero effort. the appetizers are mediocre and hardly match their description. the wines are overpriced. the bread is delivered ONCE A WEEK. they can't even make their own bread?? and it's a week old??? the server didn't even ask how the meal was at the end. i'm not mad, as the server obviously knew the food was horrid. the owners obviously do not care about their ingredients, their setting, or their clients. they're raking in money by overcharging for food that is probably rivaled by mcdonald's. i don't eat there so i don't actually know but i do know the fries are way better than what they serve here. these people are obviously taking advantage of the community. i'd be surprised if anyone ever ate here twice. and, by the way, it's pretty messed up to only have one server and one manager for the entire dining room. calling it a room is pretty generous. it's more like a hovel. the menu looked great. the execution was trash. stay away if you care about your taste buds and your wallet. read more

Neat intimate dining experience in the heart of Coronado featuring small bites from an experienced chef but prices were just a bit too high for the portions offered. Tried a number of dishes including potato croquettes (nicely crisp on the outside and with a nice marinara sauce but priced at $18 for 4 balls), bread ($10, would be nice if it was included given but was very tasty), and gnocchi ($30, felt this was fairly priced given the portion was decent), pistachio ice cream ($15 or $18 if I remember correctly, 3 scoops of regular vanilla ice cream with some pistachio on top) The restaurant is quite small and has a nice ambiance. The waitstaff are superb. However overall just felt it wasn't spectacular given the price point, dishes were good but not outstanding and very expensive for small portions. I went to Jolie for a 4pm Sunday dinner, expecting a chic date-night spot based on the online photos. Instead, I walked into a dining room that looked more like "Costco meets backyard catering", wine bottles perched on wire shelving, mismatched tables and chairs, and an open kitchen with a very casual vibe. Not exactly candlelit romance. But then came Catherine, our server, and she completely flipped the script. What Jolie lacked in ambiance, she more than made up for with warmth, thoughtfulness, and spot-on recommendations. She was attentive without hovering and genuinely elevated the whole experience. Wanted to start off by commending Jack for his one-man service from seating guests, clearing tables, keeping glasses full, and delivering plates to the table. He was friendly, attentive, and was overall a good vibe. In addition, the kitchen's ability to produce the food they do with such a minimalist setup is pretty impressive. Decor is also very minimalistic. Not much artwork on the walls giving it a soft opening vibe. We didn't see any liquor but we did take advantage of the Osyter Hour Rose and Bordeaux. We essentially tried everything on their Oyster Hour menu that runs Wednesday to Sunday from 3p-6pm. Notable dishes were: *peruvian scallops- loved the coconut vinaigrette *potato croquettes- hot and crispy on the outside, warm on the inside, good pesto and vodka sauce *crab toast- lots of jumbo lump crab, loved the hot sauce it was served with *filet-o-fish sandwiches- V reminiscent of McDonalds *kumamoto oysters- small, sweet with typical accoutrements A couple minor issues we encountered was that some of the portion sizing was inconsistent and items were missing from the dishes. Croquettes- Order was supposed to come with 4 but our two orders only came with 7 (we were a party of 7) and later came to find out they ran out of them but we were never told (we were the first party there). Caviar was missing from the crab toasts and we weren't told until we asked. We later found out they ran out as well. Crispy cauliflower portion seemed scant and it appeared the couscous was missing. Jack did attempt to make it right by offering a free bottle of Rose, which we appreciated. Would say a solid 3.5 overall. We made a reservation for this restaurant without looking at photos of the interior, so when we walked in, I was initially surprised. The interior is not decorated like restaurants normally are. However, we were warmly greeted by Jack who was our host and waiter. Upon chatting with Jack, we learned that this location used to be a butcher shop and that they plan on making renovations soon. Despite the interior aesthetics, the food tasted like it belongs in a fine dining restaurant. Jack gave his recommendations for his favorites from each category. We ordered: -Bluefin Tuna Tartare ($23): I highly recommend this dish. Every bite of tuna, which was plated on top of a buttermilk vinaigrette, paired perfectly with the grilled sourdough. -Crab Toast ($26): The jumbo lump crab, caviar, masago, and tarragon were already plated on the toast. This was delicious, and I would get it again. -Two oysters ($3.50 each): This was tasty but a bit small. -Two Peruvian Scallops ($5 each): These came with coconut vinaigrette, masago, and pickled Thai chili. I really enjoyed this starter. -Pork Chop ($42): I usually get pork chop that arrives all in one large piece. Instead, this came in slices, and the texture was so tender like pork belly. It came with cheesy semolina and arugula salad. -Ice Cream: We were given a vanilla ice cream dish with pistachios and olive oil since we were celebrating a special occasion. This was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Jack remained attentive and friendly throughout our whole meal. He checked in to see how we were doing throughout the meal, and perfectly timed when to bring out the next round of dishes. This place is a hidden gem. As others have said, the decor is very minimalist, but the attention to detail on the food is really nice. The kitchen is out in the open, which I actually found interesting because I like to watch people cook. The entrées were a little overpriced for what you got And seemed like the afterthought to what were absolutely amazing appetizers. The Peruvian scallops were so good, we ordered four more for the table. I still dream about the liquid/sauce that was in those scallop shells. We also ordered the bread, and much to the chagrin of my attempts at low-carb diets, we ordered a second round of the bread. The potato croquettes were good and I would recommend them. Like many of the other reviews, we had the executive chef actually as one of our servers, and he was very friendly and amazing to talk to as we were enjoying our food. Originally came to Jolie for small bites and ended up doing their "Trust the Chef" tasting menu of seven courses ($75 per person), in which we really had to trust the process! We were assured before changing our minds that most of the course was what we were already ordering and just went with it. They also sell a variety of wines here that you can grab and go as I witnessed an order pick up. Our courses in order were: Kumamoto Oysters & Peruvian Scallops (5/5): Came with two each and the oysters came with caviar. They were nice starters and were bright flavors. King Salmon Crudo (5/5): The king salmon is like butter! The softest salmon I've ever tried. This one was my favorite. Steak Tartare (5/5): My second favorite item. The tartare was served on a thick sourdough toast and sat on top of fresh tomatoes. Cacio e Pepe Arancini (5/5): Had hints of truffle flavor and very rich in flavor! Sea Bass (4/5) - This was their substitute for the lump crab cakes. It was pretty fresh and I enjoyed the capers on top with the lemon. The fish skin was fried evenly and remained hot and crispy. Duck Confit (4.5/5) - This was served on a bed of fig jam and lentils. It was already flavorful on its own but the fig jam went well with the duck. Panna Cotta (4/5) - Topped with grapes and peanuts. This combination went pretty well together as well as the layer of caramel I believe provided a lot of sweetness. We were quite full towards the end but extremely satisfied. Since we tried a little bit of everything I'm not sure when my next visit will be, however, the tasting course proves that Jolie produces amazing dishes. The ambience could use a little more as there is no natural lighting or any windows, but the food is spectacular coming from such a a limited kitchen space. My favorites lean more towards their starters so I would recommend any of the ones I got in the course. Have never been told upon arrival at a restaurant's opening at 4 PM that dining was not possible for the rest of the evening. Even popular restaurants in NYC will accommodate no reservations for those willing to wait. No waitlist was offered at Jolie. Fortunately the bar next door accommodated us. This is such a hidden gem!! When you walk in, the space isn't overly decorated or done up so you're not sure what to expect but the food really speaks for itself. Each dish we had was really fresh from the oysters to the bluefin crudo and the flavor profiles were great!! The staff was excellent as our server was super attentive the whole night plus gave us a run down of each dish after serving it to us. Overall, it was such a great experience and we'll definitely be coming back again soon! read more

What an interesting little place ......... As you can see from others' inside pics, this is a very unpretentious restaurant. Your food is prepared at the very end of the dining area and their wine is stored along the north side of dining area. Literally what you see, is what you get. The staff was pleasant and attentive. This evening we were eating progressively along 3 restaurants, so were ordering small plates. We started with the Garnet Yam. As you can see in my pic, you'll receive half a yam. The black garlic bbq sauce worked quite well with the depth of the yam. The sauce, while savory, wasn't that garlicky or tangy/sweetness of a meat bbq sauce. So it complimented the yam well. Ordinarily we like the chew of yam skins, but in this case it was tough - see it was pulling away from the yam. The garnishing with the sesame and peanuts added a great crunch held up to the yam and depth of the bbq sauce. We also shared the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. As you can see in my pic, there are fresh lumps of crab. The sear was great. The Louie sauce was a nice light compliment to the lightly seasoned cake. The cake was lightly packed and fell apart, allowing it to absorb the Louie sauce. read more

My husband and I absolutely love Jolie. We've been here a number times for special occasions and celebrations over the past 8 months and it is a really lovely vibe in there. The service at Jolie is impeccable and we love catching up with Jack when we visit. The food is also amazing and consistently delicious. We have loved every single dish we have gotten here over that time. Our favorite appetizers we get are the oysters, Peruvian scallops, Cacio e Pepe arancini, crispy cauliflower, and bread and butter. We've had the loup de mer, halibut, scallops, gnocchi and short rib before and all were cooked to perfection. We would 100% recommend Jolie to anyone looking for amazing food, great service, and good vibes. read more
