This is a lovely, quaint restaurant that is a favorite of locals. I've read the negative reviews - yes parking is difficult in Coronado, yes it's a small place & it gets crowded so you may have to wait. FYI - all the good restaurants in Coronado will have a wait around the high season & even more so at any time - because they're worth it. That being said - it's a gem. We love to eat in the bar area. Wasn't in love with this place...but this is more of a 3.5-er. Got the $25 prix-fixe menu which is served all evening on Tuesday (opposed to the early bird special). It's a cute idea of a victorian house turned french restauranat but it was pretty empty and felt kind of stuffy while I was there. Maybe it's just the young-un in me talkin, but I also felt as though the other patrons were all well into their fossil years... I did like the bread and dip here. The caeser salad was a little on the over-dressed side but the onion soup was fab in my opinion. I got the salmon which was very tasty, although the rice was a little too salty. Dessert-wise, the caramel custard was pretty decent. My mom got the gingerbread cake which she loved (I had a bite of it, it was very delicious but rich...not sure if I can do that much gingerbread at once), and my dad got the chocolate and vanilla cheesecake which was very meh. Not recommended. Overall, I wouldn't pay full price for these items or go out of my way to come here. Maybe their non prix fixe menu items are more exciting and worth the money... read more

Louis Latour Pinot Noir Crèpe de Homard (Maine Lobster Crepe, mascarpone, with white truffle carrot emulsion) Escargots Façon Chez Loma (Snails with tomato, prosciutto, garlic herb butter in puff pastry) Soupe à l'Oignon (Normandy style onion soup, creamed with cider, and baked gruyère crouton) Boeuf Bourguignon (Angus sirloin beef braised in red wine with bacon, mushrooms, potatoes) Chef Special (Pan seared Sea bass, with crab cake, asparagus, and white truffle risotto) Vanilla Crème Brulee (Custard with a hint of vanilla and caramelized sugar crust) My wife and I will definitely be back for another special occasion. This was so good we ate here twice within 4 days - the first time was so excellent, we went back for more. Of course, it's never quite as good the second time and the service was off, but overall still well worth the visit. Shrimp cocktail - not your typical shimp and sauce - chucked shimp and avocado in spicy tomato sauce with chips - interesting presentation and very good. Beet salad with goat cheese - first night we had this they actually substituted a mild blue cheese that was better than the goat cheese - again, very good - large variety of beets and a lot of beets. If you are looking for a lovely meal, nice glass of wine and good conversation with a fun and friendly bartender than this is your place. This is probably the only place I would ever consider as a woman to dine alone at the bar. Cheryl the bartender is very friendly and attentive. She makes a great margarita and makes you feel like you are a guest in her own home. I've tried many things on the menu but my favorites are spinach arugula salad, scallops, and the hamburger. Well, I might be biased, b/c I got engaged at Chez Loma this past weekend, and it was my BIRTHDAY, too, and all of the waiters were part of the plan with my fiance, but this restaurant is delicious! Started with the spinach salad that had tiny pieces of chewy/crispy duck bacon (if there is such a thing) walnuts and goat cheese. The dressing was perfect. Not too tart, and not sweet! Best crispy skinned duck I've ever had! I had the leftovers at lunch today and they were still scrumptious! I was calling it my "engagement duck"! :D My fiance had the boeuf Bourguinon and it was rich, and decadent, also. The creme caramel for dessert was so great, too. Sabrina, our server, was great. Friendly, attentive, charming. The way it should be. We had the escargot, which, usually I am a huge fan of but I was not fond of the spice in this dish.... We all had the halibut with crab and asparagus, which was huge! Enough to take home for a second meal. Worth the price. Everything was cooked to perfection. I had the gingerbread for desert. Not what you would expect, but delish! Lobster bisque was great as well... For 3 people, with alcoholic beverages and three courses each plus the escargot... 189 before tip. Sounds weird at an upscale place like this but they were awesome. I had the filet and my wife had the sea bass. Both perfect. The decor was nice and somewhat formal but still relatively relaxed comparted to most French restaurants I have been to (French food meets SoCal). Food was very well prepared if not terribly inventive. The wine selection was large, but most are not offered by the glass. Price was very reasonable considering the location and quality of the food. The prix fix menu offered before 6 is an especially good value. Street parking is easy to find and Coronado is a nice walk-able community with plenty of other attractions. This is by far one of the best finds of our San Diego trip. If you never had French before , you could maybe "not know what the fuss is" However, if you like French cuisine please go and try!!! One of the best French onion soups I have had in the US (many places in the US that serve French onion soup make it VERY salty). The restaurant has a home like feel and the food is exquisite. This getaway to San Diego has been full of foodie finds. My sister recommended Chez Loma for their Creme Brûlée so we decided to give it a try for lunch. We arrived for a late lunch (around 1:30 pm) to find the restaurant on the quiet side. Our server Megan did a great job serving us and seated us in a quiet section with a big window to check out Coronado. The restaurant is located in a old house and has a lot of character. My wife chose the Steak Frites and I decided to go with the duck tacos. Both were good and portions were filling. The Creme Brûlée was on point and probably in my Top 10 for that type of dessert. Overall, a nice lunch and would not hesitate to go again when we are back in the area. read more

Very overpriced, poor service, limited menu. We were regular Chez Loma customers (for 10 years) pre-pandemic and pre-new ownership and are sorely disappointed in our first (and last) visit since. The bartender was forced to wait tables not only in the bar, but on the sidewalk outside and in the main part of the house. The filet portion, accompanied with 4 or 5 slices of potato and 4 green beans, was tiny and not prepared to order. The tomato salad was so vinegar-y as to be nearly inedible. One of the things we loved most about the "old" Chez Loma was the excellent seafood choices--great scallops, halibut, and sea bass. This menu has only salmon. I can't imagine that ANY of the loyal local "regulars" of the "old Chez Loma" will give this place more than one visit. Very disappointing--tourists beware !!! read more

Went here on Christmas Eve with my mother that is in a wheelchair, needless to say they helped out the very second we arrived with no issues. We were shown to our lovely table with no wait (we did have reservations). It was decorated cozy and beautiful for Christmas which was so nice! The staff was extremely friendly and ambience was wonderful and comfortable. We all enjoyed our pre-fixe menu that night and they even accommodated my 10 yr old picky eater. Last night in Coronado after living there six years, we FINALLY went to Chez Loma. I have to say, glad we did not go before or we would be broke. It was wonderful! The Joseph Carr Cabernet recommended by our server was absolutely fabulous. And a.though my Diver Scallops were great, my husbands beef bourguinon was absolutely to die for! Been going to Chez Loma since I was a child in the 80's. It has changed owners a few times but has always been good. I went recently and had the escargot, foie gras, and beef bourgeon. 1st time having the snails, wow they were great! Don't be scared to try them if u like garlic, butter, shallot and wine sauce. The foie gras was excellent, paired with delicious additions to cut the duck fat flavor. Very well thought out plate. Although a bit pricey, the food is of quality and the service is great. Chez Loma is a contributing factor to the Coronado Island atmosphere. Looking forward in trying their happy hour special, Duck Tacos. read more

We have been to Chez Loma about ten times--usually for special occasions. It has always been excellent and never disappointed. I lived in France for a year with two different families and my French mothers taught me how to cook French food, and I also took French cooking classes there. Chez Loma always met our expectations in every way: ambiance, service and food. We were celebrating our two birthdays and made a reservation about 2 weeks in advance. We arrived early and were seated at a table that was practically in the hallway as you walked up the stairs into the restaurant on the left. It was chilly that night and the breeze from outside was uncomfortable. The waiter suggested we move the table a bit closer toward the interior, which he did. The people next to us started laughing and said "Do you want to sit with us at our table?" That was a bit awkward. The waiter suggested I move so my back would be to the people next to us. The hostess said she could close the door to the outside, but then came back and said she could not. My husband said there were one or two additional rooms that were not being utilized. We pondered the situation for a while and I told my husband we should leave. I honestly don't think anyone in their right mind would have found such a table acceptable. This is not the Chez Loma ambiance I loved and adored. C'est dommage! read more

We really want to like this restaurant. It has a cozy neighborhood I've. Very elegant, good service and I love the music. I just wish the young hostess was more gracious. We arrived on Sunday morning and I was reading what I thought was the set brunch menu outside. I asked the hostess if we could order off the menu and she responded as though I were stupid to ask. "Well of course" she said in amazement at the question. Also, she seemed unwilling to seat us. She didn't seem to want to leave her station to show us seating. Also very disappointing Caesar salad. The romaine was limp and drenched in an oily dressing, Parmesan looked and tasted like sprinkle cheese and a stingy portion of flavorless anchovies. My dining companion told me I should have sent it back. Also my meal arrived a good 10 minutes before my companion's I would expect more from such a venerable classic such as Chez Loma. read more

THE WORST TOURIST TRAP ON CORONADO Chez Loma looks SO cute and appealing from the outside, and thousands of tourists have fallen into the trap of thinking they've found a local treasure. Well, they haven't. Chez Loma has been lightening the wallets of out-of-town suckers for years, and no local would be caught dead in the place. The menu (unbound on plain paper to try and seem homey and artisanal) features grossly overpriced French stalwarts on a menu that hasn't changed for decades. The real problem, however, is the service. The staff simply does not care, because they don't have to. Every day, another horde of free-spending tourists hits the island, and every day another fool will think "It's a restaurant in a house!!! It must be run by a French chef as a labor of love!!!" and three hours and three hundred dollars later, they leave, poorer but wiser. After a decade of avoiding the place, last night I decided I wanted some French Onion Soup. Well, easier said than done, because the hostess was not at her station, and as I stood there, and stood there, and stood there, I was ignored by waitress and manager alike. After between five and ten minutes of being ignored, I tracked down the manager and told her of the problem. Her response of "I'm sorry you feel that way" had me out the door ten seconds later. If you eat here, you've been warned. Expect to pay a fortune, be packed in like cattle in a feed lot, and expect horrible service from a staff that doesn't have to care, because there's a dozen tourists suckers right behind you. read more

She even drove to the store to get tonic for my drink..Covid has definitely had an impact on this place. They didn't have greygoose, no tonic ,soda gun at bar not working,,..I settled on 7-up.. Wine list is very limited with average selection. Didnt have 2 of my first choices So we settled again..We sat for quite some time before even being greeted by our server. Then she waited on a couple that came in after us first.... Mistakes happen. I feelt he food was ok... but not what is seen in pictures on line....Beet salad very plain not like posted. No puree.I feel like my beef bourgingion was the end of the pot serving. It was only 4 pieces of meat.Served in a small dish, usually reserved for sides, and half of it was mashed potatoes.... At the hefty price of 38.00... My wife ordered Scallops... They were the smallest I have ever seen... The six were not even worthy to be called an appetizer...... This place has a lot of character and charm. The ambience is very unique and offers a very quaint setting. I believe there are only around 6-7 tables total (minus the bar area) on the first floor. We saw this place earlier in the day while exploring the neighborhood near Star Park. We made reservations on-line for 7:30 but showed up a little early as the walk from Glorietta Bay Inn didn't take nearly as long as we thought. Nevertheless, we were seated after only a short wait. As it happens, on Tuesdays, the Early Dinner menu was available for the entire evening, meaning that for about $25, you get a 3 course meal. I had the Caesar salad (avoiding the anchovies). It was unpretentious and quite good. For the entrée, I ordered the boeuf bourguignon with whipped potatoes, your basic meat and potatoes dish. One word: delicious. And the French vanilla custard rounded out a near perfect meal. Both the dessert and the entrée were my favorites of the three courses. My only complaint was that we were seated in photon-challenged location, and it took us a while to read what was on the menu. :~) The wait staff was prompt and courteous and ambiance of this converted residence was quite charming. The perfect place for a special family dinner! My family (a group of 14) visited Coronado to celebrate four decade birthdays, including my grandpa's 90th birthday! I scheduled the private room in the upstairs of Chez Loma, assuming it would be quiet enough for my grandparents to hear. It was perfect - the windows were open and there was a really nice breeze sweeping through the quaint house - and it was just a short walk from the Hotel Del Coronado. The service was phenomenal. Our waiter, Dan, was incredibly friendly, attentive and made us feel right at home. My only complaint is that it took a little while, which I think would've been easier if he had a little more support. Not sure how that all works, but I would suggest that they have two waiters for a group this large so that the food can be brought out quicker. The slowness is the only reason I have 4 stars, but know that is no reflection of Dan's performance; he did great. Speaking of food: the food was delicious! We set the menu in advance, which included the following. Appetizer: soup (which was apparently delicious) or a caesar salad (I had it, it was crisp and refreshing). Entree: salmon (incredible, great portion and sides) or short rib (apparently delicious, though most of us ordered the fish) and finally a choice of dessert: gingerbread cake (smelled delectable) or a personal creme brulee (which I had - it was cooked perfectly and I highly recommend). All in all, our food was a huge hit, and I would recommend anything on that list. The whole experience was one for the books. We were able to laugh and tell old stories like we were sitting in our own dining room table. Everyone could hear each other (which never happens at restaurants) and the vibe was perfect for our family. I highly recommend the upstairs of Chez Loma for a private event! To the owners & management, Just finished brunch at my sons favorite restaurant in coronado. He and his wife go there probably 2 times per month and always set in the bar area because they just love it. First, the food was great but it is the service i want to speak about. Our server was the bartender. Dont know his name, just a middle aged guy who seemed more occupied with setting up his bar than taking care of your customers (and we were the only customers in the bar the entire time). At first we thought he was a mute because he never talked. When responding to a request, he either smiled sarcastically or just did it without any comment. He did however use sign language, by pointing at a saucer which he expected my wife to move so he could sat down her lunch,or withholding a plate which held a replacement bun for a burnt one until my son took the bum from the plate, but never a word! And this was behavior to a group who never complains. I could go on about a bunch of little things but really dont want to waste my time or yours. Suffice to say he was the worst, rudest, mute waiter i have ever seen. I was born and raised in coronado and my only recourse is to tell my friends of this experience. Three stars is very generous for our experience tonight. We went for happy hour, which was locally recommended to us. There is no happy hour menu at all and we weren't sure there even was a happy hour except for the signage. We ordered wine and hamburgers. We ordered the hamburgers medium they were extremely slow in coming. We waited and waited. Then when they came, they were way overcooked. In fact, my hamburger bun was burnt. Service was extremely slow and the server never even checked back to see whether everything was OK or not. We have eaten dinner here before it was very good so we are extremely disappointed in their happy hour. We will not return for that. read more

I had such high hopes for this restaurant, as I had noticed the quaint exterior on a previous visit to Coronado, but it did not live up to my expectations. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary, so we wanted something special. We were seated upstairs, but the atmosphere was a bit sterile and awkward, and I felt like the couple next to us was on our date too. I asked for a cocktail menu, but I was told that they didn't have one, but there was an extensive wine list. That would be great if I wanted wine, but I didn't. We started with the crab cake, which was delicious - the best thing all meal. Next, I had the heirloom tomato salad, which was in dire need of some salt and pepper, but I had to ask, as that is not provided on the table. Ok, let me be clear. The only thing I don't like about this romantic/quaint little restaurant is the fact that it is 20 miles from my house. The ambulance is wonderful, the food is great and the service perfect. Specifically, if you are lucky enough to get Sabrina as your waitress/entertainment for the evening you will certainly have an night to remember. We visit Chez Loma at least 5 times a year immediately after attending one of the many great plays at Lambs. Talk about a perfect day on Coronado! read more
