Admittedly, this store has an "efficient" menu; and the only item I have ever ordered is the Hainan Chicken & Rice. I tried the chicken fried rice for the first time. As you might imagine, the rice and chicken used is the same as served with the Hainan Chicken & Rice. As a result, the fried rice has a higher moisture content than a lot of fried rice served elsewhere. But the taste is good, and the serving is appropriate for the price. read more

My boyfriend and I were wandering around Rodeo 39 for lunch and snacking. As we made our loop around to see all of the businesses, Chic Now was one of the spots that caught our eyes. There were a lot of customers waiting and there was a good combo deal. We got the GGG Combo ($18.98) which comes with their best selling Hainan Chicken Rice, a side of the Chicken Broth, and a Sugarcane drink. My boyfriend opted for the lychee sugarcane. It did take a while to prepare, so if you are ordering from multiple spots, I recommend putting this order in first. It's probably because they're busy but at least you know the food is fresh. The Hainan chicken rice here comes with the traditional rice cooked with chicken broth and the 3 dipping sauces. The soy sauce was good, chili sauce didn't have ginger unlike other similar spots, and the ginger sauce was a little salty. The sauces really have a big effect on meals like this, but it was overall decent. The chicken broth was very pure but bland. It could use more seasoning but it might just be their take on how chicken broth should be. Overall we felt like their Hainan chicken is not as good as Savoy, but better than Cluck2Go. As for the sugarcane drink with lychee. It was too too sweet. Even as the ice melted down it was too sweet. My boyfriend said I made a grossed out face when he ordered it... haha... oops. I normally like both of those flavors individually but together I can see them being 2 overly sweet ingredients. Better pairings for the sugarcane drink is definitely the kumquat, but they were out of it, and I also see the calamansi. An acidic or sour flavor would better cut through the natural sweetness of sugarcane. Overall a good value pic among the many options at Rodeo 39. This is a strictly take out place in the Rodeo 39 food court but it was a beautiful day and the outdoor seating was very nice (indoor seating was also available). Our food was ready within a few minutes. We ordered Hainan chicken with rice and Stir fried bok choy. We were a little nervous because we cannot specify dark meat vs white meat, maybe we should have asked. We had the choice of with skin and without skin. What came out was a mixture of deboned white and dark and it was all delicious. The rice was also very good. It came with chicken broth, a few slices of cucumber and three sauces. I liked the chili and scallion sauces. If you like a lot of vegetables I recommend the bok choy side order. All in all a nice experience. I have never been to Singapore but my guess is Chic Now is quite authentic to the hawker style of that island. read more

I like to try the chicken on its own before dipping in the sauce and found that Chic Now is very mild in flavor. The chicken was perfectly tender, both with and without skin. However, the rice and chicken really needed to be paired with the sauces and broth for the best flavor. The green onion and ginger sauce was really good. I think the soy sauce had a bit of sweetness to it. I didn't try the spicy sweet sauce because it usually tends to be too sweet for me. I opted for the regular sugarcane but sized up for $1 more. No wait, but you can order ahead of time with the QR code by the cash register if someone isn't there to immediately help you! Food came out in about 15 minutes. They had minimalistic decor with cute mural artwork of a Hainan chicken meal on the wall by their tables & chairs! What we got: -Hainan Chicken Rice (Signature & Skinless): I love the chicken skin! Comes with the chicken, rice, cucumbers, soup, and three different sauces. My favorite sauce was the ginger scallion sauce (green), followed by the sweet soy sauce. The chili sauce was used for my leftovers! The ginger scallion sauce complemented the chicken and rice very well. However, I will say that my friend and I thought that the rice was less flavorful than we expected given the price point (~$16 including tax). Thankfully the sauce gave the umami that we wanted. This has been one of my favorite places at Rodeo 39. Staff are friendly and quality of food is consistently good. I usually order the Hainan Chicken w/ the skin on. It comes with the poached chicken, flavored rice, a side of chicken broth, 3 sauces & slices of cucumber . The scallion sauce is what makes this dish flavorful and is my favorite sauce of the three. We saved it with sauces but the salt they used in the broth shoulda been used on the chicken. The Bok Choy was super clean and the sugarcane was very refreshing. So far this is the best Hainan chicken I've tried in OC. The chicken is tender and juicy. The skin was tender, intact, and not overcooked, but could have had slightly more bite. The rice is flavorful and cooked with great texture. You get sliced cucumbers and 3 sauces. The ginger scallion oil was great as expected, but the other two sauces (sweetened soy sauce, sambal oelek chili paste) were just okay - I've had better at other places. I wasn't a fan of the broth. It was flavorful, but I suspect MSG. Solid hainanese chicken that was juicy and not oily. Rice was good but could be more herby. The soup was really good to add and did not taste bland. I got a combo of Hainan Chicken Rice with the skin on and a sugar cane drink with added lychee for a total of about $20. It's just a small stall here, not much unique decoration, but you can watch as they make the sugar cane juice which was pretty cool. It wasn't too long of a wait and I got my food to go. The chicken was super juicy and the rice was flavorful. I loved the sauces especially the soy sauce based one. I also really liked that they had pickled radish on the side. My sugar cane drink was tasty and not too sweet. When ordering the sugar cane drink they ask what flavor you want and I said lychee. I assumed since they said flavor it was just going to be lychee flavoring that they put in there, but they literally put chopped pieces of lychee in my drink. That was a pleasant surprise! My current go to hainan chicken spot is the location in Irvine. It's the most consistent and one of the better ones I've tried in the area. I had no idea they were opening at Rodeo 39 until recently, so I had to try it out since it's much closer. Ordered online to pickup for lunch and was ready when I got there. They offer a couple different things on the menu compared to the other location such as egg tarts and sugar cane juice. The hainan chicken rice is a great value and just as good as ever. Sauces are on point and which is essential when this dish relies on it. I also tried the lychee sugarcane and was not bad as it was an add on. Lychee bits on the bottom and you can still taste the sugarcane flavor as well as lychee. I'm glad there's a closer location and will be here more often. Don't underestimate this healthy chicken hole in the wall restaurant! If you're looking for a healthy dish this is the place to go! I'm a fan of Hainanese chicken since I always make this at home. I've gone to places where the chicken is extremely dry from over boiling but this restaurant always does an amazing job keeping the chicken moist and tender! The chicken was obviously delicious and it comes with 3 sauces! You must put on the green ginger chive sauce on top with the sweet soy sauce for extra flavor!
