    Banh canh (#5)
    Kim N.

A small restaurant on the corner of the street. This placed used to be my parent's and aunt's go-to for pho, but now it's well-known for it's banh canh! My friend really wanted to try it, so we each ordered a bowl of different types of banh canh. I ordered the #5, which included shrimp balls and crab meat. It was ok! Less crab meat than I expected. The Chinese donut was also surprisingly pricey- 4 bucks for 2 pieces. Service was quick and staff was nice.

There is only indoor seatings! There is a lot of tables! 5. Parking lot is small! Note: They do accept card transactions at a minimum purchase! Photo: Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Banh Canh Dac Biet

BEST banh canh cua in orange county I've been wanting to try this place from friends recommendations and social media and I was so pleased with the fast service and delicious food!

Visited a second time because I enjoyed the food last time & was charged for water this time around? Unsure as to how i feel about that.

    Banh xeo was so good!

This is now two restaurants in one building. I don't really like banh canh (the other restaurant). The banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake) was super crispy and super good! We asked for more veggies and herbs and the nuoc mam dipping sauce was perfection. I also had the catfish cooked in a clay pot and it was delicious. I would definitely order this again. It comes with a nice light broth and pickled veggies. Perfect for lent! I will be back to order this. Yummy

Banh canh lived up to the social media hype, the broth and consistency was perfect! Banh beo was also so good! Ate here on a weekday, the restaurant was nice and quiet. Very casual. Great for a hang over day and can be shared with two people if you want to order other dishes. Will definitely be back.

I saw people on TikTok posting this place, and it didn't disappoint! The employees were extremely friendly. The food was tasty and piping hot (which is essential when it comes to soup). There's plenty of seating as well.

This place is such a hidden gem! It has that classic hole-in-the-wall vibe, but it's actually surprisingly spacious inside. We went on a Wednesday late afternoon and it wasn't busy at all, which made it really comfortable and relaxed. There's also plenty of parking, which is always a plus. I ordered the banh canh and it was absolutely loaded -- crab, shrimp, fish cake -- super hearty and filling. The broth was rich and flavorful without being too heavy. You can tell they don't skimp on the ingredients. The waitress recommended pairing the soup with a Chinese doughnut, and I'm so glad we listened. Dipping it into the broth was next level. The egg rolls were perfectly crispy and made it fun to eat -- that crunch was so satisfying. Service was warm and friendly, and we felt really taken care of. Overall, amazing comfort food, generous portions, and great service. Definitely coming back!

Couldn't decide which Vietnamese dish I wanted for lunch, so came here to dine since they had so many options on their menu. English was a bit limited, but the man who took our order was extremely kind and sweet. Service was great and we were checked on throughout our meal. Some food items may be a bit underwhelming in meat quantity. For example, the banh canh nha trang didn't seem to have an abundance of the meats/toppings, but it was still delicious and the serving size was satisfying. Great restaurant overall! Note: There is a fee for water (I think 50 cents for to-go cup of water)

I never know there are that many options for bánh canh! You can customize however you want, there are two types of broth and a variety of meat/other toppings. Will be my go to place for Bánh canh now.

Came to this restaurant for banh canh but will be returning for the banh beo. The banh beo was so fresh and bouncy, the shrimp and onions on top added the perfect texture and came with a fish sauce and chili paste. The banh canh was thick and comforting, and the shrimp it came with was HUGE. Food came out super fast and the staff were very attentive.

My daughter was telling how me good this place was and kept asking me to come here with her. So I did. We both ordered #5 Udon with thick broth (Bahn Cahn Hue). The broth was supposed to be made with crabmeat but it didn't taste like it. The udon noodles was so overcooked that it broke in pieces once you pick it up with the chopsticks. So I had to use the soup spoon to pick it up carefully. It supposed to have crab meat in it but I only sound like one long piece of crab meat and four pieces of fried fish paste. At this point, this bowl is just overcooked broken udon and thick cornstarch soup. Also. I wish they would have let customers know they charge $1.50 for iced tap water. I would have just brought my hydroflask inside. Service was not so attentive and you have to pay at the cash register when done. We drove from LA to this place just to have a bad experience. Not worth the time, money, and drive to this place. Biggest regret. There are places in LA with much better Vietnamese food and service. Not coming back nor would I recommend.

My Go-To pho place when I'm around!!! Been coming here since it was 50% off pho when dining in!!! Brought my now husband here to try pho the first time 16 years ago and he was hooked!!! The service is always good! Wish my dad taught me Vietnamese so I can order in the language!!! I try to try things my dad would have gotten if he was still alive. This place just makes me miss him and love the culture!!! My Pho Combo was so much food that I took more than half home!!!

The chicken was crispy and the dipping sauce gave it that extra yummy goodness. The dish also came with a side of broth that had chicken bits in it, was nice to help digest your dish. I also loved that they gave you pickled veggies & fresh veggies. We also ordered the Loi's Fusion Saltado, upgraded the rice to garlic egg fried rice. The beef was soft and tender, the fries were nice and crispy and the fried rice was fresh. You 100% need to get the Thai Tea. A lot of place add too much cream/half and half diluting the tea flavor, they do not skimp on the actual tea in their drink. The color speaks for itself on the dark orange hue!

I'm a bit late getting around to writing this, and unfortunately, they are already closed, but I still felt like I had to share my experience. I'm not completely surprised that they closed, especially after trying their bò né. I've had this dish many times at different places around Orange County, and unfortunately, this was probably the weakest version I've come across. The first thing that stood out was the presentation. As you can see in the picture, there was this purple-colored sauce on the meat itself, which honestly did not look very appetizing. To make things worse, the sauce was cold and did not heat in time with the skillet, which really took away from the experience. The flavor itself wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't anything memorable. It was just okay, and when you factor in the cold food and the presentation, it made the whole dish disappointing. With so many places around Orange County serving bò né at a much higher level, I would probably recommend spending your money elsewhere. If you were wondering whether you missed out on some hidden gem, don't worry, you didn't. This one felt more like a piece of coal than a diamond. That being said, every restaurant has its journey, and with more time, maybe they could have found their footing. Hopefully, they can take this experience as a lesson, refine their recipes, and bring something better in their next venture. I am rooting for you Loi!

I found the food to have a great depth of flavor, something a lot of pho places lack. I especially liked the wider noodles which offered a nice chew and texture change. Be prepared: this place is incredibly popular, especially during peak hours. Parking can definitely be challenging because of how busy it is. The last time I visited on a Monday, the lot was completely full, and I ended up parking on the street. The restaurant is also primarily cash only, so come prepared. They open early, making it a perfect breakfast spot for an early bowl of pho. The pho broth is exactly what I want when I'm craving comfort food--clean, flavorful, and incredibly soothing. However, the star of the meal for me was the chả giò. Wow. Although they arrived after our pho, they came out at the perfect temperature. I was hesitant to take a bite right away because freshly fried food usually burns my mouth, but these were just right. Crispy, airy, savory, and absolutely delicious. Paired with their fish sauce, it was perfection. I enjoyed the egg rolls so much that next time I'm definitely ordering the egg roll vermicelli bowl. Service was friendly and prompt despite how busy it was, and it's clear the staff works hard to keep things moving. One thing I love is seeing all of the awards and accolades displayed on the walls. Phở 79 received the prestigious James Beard America's Classics Award, and it's easy to understand why after one meal here. This restaurant is truly an Orange County icon. The restaurant will soon be moving to a new location, as signs throughout the restaurant announce the upcoming move.
