Called the team to replace heat-only thermostats for 2 matching enclosed fireplaces that hadn't been inspected since it was installed by the previous owners of my condo in 2007. Thought the new thermostats would fix the issue of both units not kicking on the actual fireplace. I was partially correct, and Rey demonstrated that the existing thermostats would be a temporary bandaid at best. The root cause we're bad pilot systems which we're sending/receiving weak signals to thermostat. Although we ended up paying more than we had anticipated, the fireplaces are working as if they're brand new. They replaced the pilot systems and *thoroughly* cleaned them both. Workmanship was awesome and they were good honest people. Can't recommend them enough for any fireplace-related needs. read more

The full review follows. Here is the short version: Greenforest is in a completely different league from the several commission-based top-rated chimney/fireplace companies we tried to work with for a vented gas insert in the fireplace of our 1920 Hyde Park apartment. Ray (Sr.) didn't charge for the initial visit (everyone else did); he really listened to what we wanted and gave us a lot of insight from his experience with I think 5 fireplaces in his house and many years in the business. They were the only company willing to even consider installing a vented fireplace in our apartment (Everyone else tried to force us to get a slightly more dangerous vent-free model). Ok, that wasn't so short. To continue... We were facing a hard sell from Chicagoland Chimney and Fireplace for a unit we didn't even like, having been convinced we had no really good options if we wanted a gas insert. They also insisted that we had to rebuild our entire chimney for over $10k or accept a vent-free insert. We paid $149 for that. On a lark, I called Greenforest and a few other companies to see if anyone offered any better options. Even without coming out, everyone else predicted that we'd have to get a vent-free unit and named brands we'd looked at with misgivings. Thank God I looked at Google reviews and not at Yelp, or I would never have called Greenforest. Thanks to several reviews that are mostly irritable rants about the son's abrasive manners (I won't really disagree) and the store hours, Greenforest only has 3 stars. Ray Jr. assured me they could most likely vent our fireplace based on a description and some photos. His Dad, who is a really sweet man (and a veteran), came out to do the home visit. There was no charge, no pressure and we were able to recover our enthusiasm for our project. We spent maybe an hour going through the pros and cons of various models. Also, Ray showed us models from Valor, which none of the other companies we spoke with even mentioned. These had a bunch of advantages for our situation, and we went from feeling like we were settling to feeling enthusiastic. And, it turns out that Ray, Jr. is the technical and logistical genius behind the business, so that may explain why he isn't Mr. Charming. I don't know. I'd prefer competent and able to meet our needs than charming. We love the way this insert looks and functions. I could say more about why the other models we looked at don't work for us, but I've gone on long enough. read more

He even recognized that the original hearth stone didn't match the fireplace stone and graciously offered to replace it with limestone at no additional charge. Greenforest replaced my old ugly gaslogs, repainted by firebox and added a glass door. Ray provided me a variety of options at different price points, including options I didn't even know existed. It took a little coaxing to get to the absolute cheapest options, but once those were on the table I didn't feel pressured to spend more than I wanted. Installation was fairly easy. However, the first set of installers did not bring the glass door I had ordered and paid for. Apparently the door I picked can be difficult to fit properly--Greenforest knew this and sent their most experienced installer (the owner, I think) the next day to get it done right. It's great that Greenforest cares about doing the job right but I wish they would have told me their plan ahead of time. Ultimately the install was perfect and my fireplace looks brand new. read more

By 4:45pm no one had showed, and I had to call their office to confirm if they were coming or not, at which point they informed me their technician got sick and wouldn't be able to make it. No one from their office called to inform me. Glad I left work early and coordinated child care just to be stood up. The rep on the phone was completely unapologetic, and unwilling to work with me to find a comparable solution. The next available appointment wasn't until over 3 weeks later, and the best they can do to rectify the situation was take $20 off of the nearly $500 service. Please save yourself the time and headache and schedule your fireplace maintenance with literally any other company. Whoever they are, they couldn't be worse than GreenForest fireplace. read more

This place is a joke. Rey might be one of the creepiest people I have ever met and that doesn't go a long way when you are in sales. Absolutely no customer service skills at all. Delivery was delayed by a few weeks and I could hardly get an apology or even the tracking number from the mantel. I had to reach out to the manufacture directly. I ended up canceling the order because the installation date had to be changed because they can't figure out who does what on certain days. I ended up buying the mantel since it had been delivered but had it installed by a contractor I found a few days prior for half of what Greenforest was charging and it was done in less than an hour. I wouldn't recommend this place if it was the only place to get a mantel surround. read more

I was originally very happy with Greenforest Fireplace and Patio as we chose them to convert our wood burning fireplace to gas in 2012. Over the last year (2016) we have had numerous issues with Carbon Monoxide readings in our house. We had the fire dept. here 2 times, the gas company here 3 times, purchased many new carbon monoxide detectors and even a new stove to try to figure it out and even Greenforest came out once to check the pilot in the fireplace as the gas company said that was the issue. Greenforest told us no way it could be the pilot to the fireplace but in August, 2016 we turned the pilot off per Greenforest's instructions. Guess what, no more carbon monoxide readings. We agreed to keep it off for 2 months to see what would happen and if no carbon monoxide readings then we would all agree it was the pilot and to convert it to a manual set up. Well, the 2 month time came up and Greenforest came over to replace the pilot with a manual match light versus a pilot that is always burning and to do a tune up (new sand, clean the logs, etc.). Greenforest still charged me (gave me $40 off or something like that) and said I must have done something different in the house--new windows or something, but it was clear nothing changed in the house, same windows, same house. If Greenforest would have honored their product and said they were not sure and not charged me, or even split it rather than still charge me so much, I would say at least they tried, but instead they wanted to pin it on me and my house even after we agreed to a process. Very disappointing and an uncomfortable position to be in. read more

Reynaldo was able to drop by within the hour the same day he called. He was able to show us first time homeowners the mechanics of a gas starter wood burning fireplace in less than 10 mins. Amazing!! We had called the other guys...Youtubed...and asked neighbors...no one knew what he did. Thanks Reynaldo!!! Also he didn't charge us an arm and a leg! Love it. Just bought an updated modern looking vent free fireplace to update the older one that a. wasn't working and b. probably was spewing out more carbon monoxide that I'd care to breath in. Shopped around at a few places to get a quote and Greenforest had the lowest quote by far, and was able to install on reasonably short notice. The installation guy was fairly quick, clean, and helpful in giving me the nuts and bolts of how to work it. They also included a fall cleaning in the purchase of the burner. Clearly by the reviews, there are some customer service issues, and when I first went in to browse, the sales associate there wasn't quite as helpful as I would've liked. Other than that, the sales associate I've been working with since has been friendly, responsive, and again, the price was the lowest I found. read more

Two weeks ago I had the owner come out and fix our fireplace which he sold us six years ago. After a new part and 1,200 dollars it worked for two days. Called to reschedule , the person answering the phone, I believe it is his son, was rude but I managed to get a new a new appointment. Not the first time he has been extremely rude. The day before they were to come out, I called to suggest that they bring out new parts and to offer to send a photo. The same person who answers the phone was again extremely rude. He Would not let me talk and insisted on describing the problem in an incorrect manner claiming he had taken notes. He then hung up the phone. This person should not be in-charge of customers. He seems extremely anxious and clearly cannot handle this job. I would strongly recommend going to another dealer. read more

This is the second time I've used these guys, swapping out an insert that I wanted updated. Once again -- stellar performance. The sales guy was really easy; made a small mistake on the order and called me about it right away (and ate the difference, now there's customer service). The installer was right on time. Had all of the needed materials, reviewed what he was doing before he started work to make sure we were on the same page. Was very clean and neat, brought his own vacuum and cleaned out the fireplace before installing the new log set, put down a sheet so he wouldn't scratch my hard wood floors, took off his shoes all without asking. Work was done quickly, neatly and with a very beautiful result. Explained the controls to me and thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. Even insisted on taking the empty card board boxes. I had them quote a from scratch new fireplace install that I've been saving up for and they were able to fit me in pretty quickly. I should note I went by their shop on Monday and on Friday they were installing this insert. Really really recommend these guys! Will add my review of the custom new fireplace when it's done in a couple of weeks. read more

Mom's colonial style house on the Southside was rejuvenated with the addition of the gas logs and equipment. The installer was just as friendly and attentive in the house as he was in the store. The remote control is very handy for a senior citizen. look forward to buying an insert for my house soon. BUYER BEWARE!! Do not purchase ANYTHING FROM THIS PLACE that needs to be installed. We paid for an electric fireplace and during the installation had MISSING PARTS! When we called to get assistance from the owner we were told to grab the instruction manual and describe to him what was missing??? Meanwhile his FATHER, who is the installer, had to run to Home Depot to buy a power cord that did NOT come w/the fireplace. While my husband was describing to the owner what was missing (from the manual that came w/the unit) the owner told my husband he did not understand anything that he was describing b/c he had never done an install before. ISN'T THIS YOUR PRODUCT??!!! The owner says he is going to have to talk to his dad, the man at Home Depot, and get back to us. He then says he has other customers in his store and had to hang up the phone. HE ACTUALLY HUNG UP! I called back b/c how dare you hang up on a customer who has already purchased your product to chase after new customers. We paid for a product and a service. IN FULL. Obviously you're important to this place when they want your money but after that good luck. We were supposed to be on our way to see Hamilton and had to cancel b/c we were NEVER TOLD HOW LONG THE INSTALLATION WOULD TAKE. Not only that but when they showed up w/missing parts and no sense of urgency our entire afternoon was blown. Oh and his Dad never apologized when I highlighted that this entire delay was not our doing or fault. He was nonchalant and didn't care. I've been in contact with Greenforest four times now regarding a part for my older-model fireplace. The two men I've dealt with offer the absolute the worst customer service experience I've ever encountered. I wish I could give them 0 stars. 1. The first time, my husband called and talked to Reynaldo. He told him we needed a replacement glass panel and frame, and the model of our fireplace. "Sure," Reynaldo said. "Just come on down to the store, and we'll get you one custom-made for around $250." 2. A few days later, a Saturday, we went on down to the store. Reynaldo was out, but Mike listened to our situation with dismay. After pacing in the back room for a minute, he delivered the verdict: The fireplace company (Temco) is out of business, and ordering the metal to make a custom frame could be upwards of $1,000. He couldn't help us. I spent the next couple weeks researching the company and the part online. What I found out: Temco was bought out by another fireplace company, Vermont Castings, whose website contained documentation on my fireplace, and listed the exact part number for the replacement part I needed. There was hope. 3. I contacted several dealers with no luck, and ended up calling Greenforest again. I got Reynaldo. As I tried to explain my situation, he kept butting in and telling me that Temco and Vermont Castings were two different companies. He would not listen. But he did want to be my friend. "I need to make money," he told me. "But I'm going to give you a tip -- you can go to any glass company and get it custom cut. Then call me when you want it installed and your fireplace inspected." If he would've listened, he would've understood that I didn't need JUST the glass. I needed the frame, too. After making contact with Vermont Castings, I found out that the part number I had was old. They were making a new, comparable glass panel, with a different part number. For some reason, we decided to give Greenforest one more chance. Husband called and got Mike. He asked directly if Mike could call Vermont Castings and order this exact part number. 4. Mike does some detective work, asking for the make, model and brand of our fireplace. *** Conversation *** Mike: "TEMCO'S OUT OF BUSINESS" Husband: "I know. they were bought by Vermont Castings." Mike: "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?" Husband: "I looked it up on Internet, emailed their customer service, they said to order this part, but we need to go through a dealer." Mike: "THOSE ARE 2 DIFFERENT COMPANIES." Husband: "Not according to them. I emailed their customer service department, and they said this was a direct factory replacement." Mike: "WHAT PHONE NUMBER DID YOU CALL? GIVE IT TO ME." Husband: "I e-mailed them. They don't list a number on their site." Mike: "SO YOU DONT HAVE A PHONE NUMBER?" Husband: "No. i used the Internet." Mike: "WELL, I HAVE TO CHECK INTO THIS." Husband: "OK. do you want their email address?" Mike: "NO. I'LL CALL THEM. BUT YOU DONT HAVE THEIR NUMBER?" Husband: "No. I emailed them. They said we HAD to go through a dealer. Please just call them and let me know what they say." Mike: "OK. I'LL CALL THEM AND LOOK INTO THIS. I'M NOT SURE IT'S RIGHT. TEMCO'S OUT OF BUSINESS. IF WHAT YOURE TELLING ME IS TRUE, THEN WE DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT. I'LL CALL THEM AND LET YOU KNOW." *** 2 minutes later Mike calls husband back *** Mike: "Just as I suspected, that part is no longer available." Click. I'm guessing he didn't even bother to call. The TRUTH about the part, that I found out from contacting a competent fireplace dealer in the suburbs: That part is no longer on regular production by Vermont Castings, who have declared bankruptcy. But it CAN be special ordered, with up to a 45-day wait period, for $150. So, if I weren't a diligent, desperate, Internet-trolling person; if I had listened to Mike and Reynaldo, I would either be installing a brand-new fireplace or paying $1,000 for a custom-made glass panel. These guys are a piece of work. Bought a floor model for a "discount". Found out later it wasn't a discount, just a sleezy sales pitch by Ray. It was mounted on the wall and I went back a few weeks later to see if it had been removed from the wall and the new face I ordered had come in. Neither had been done. It wasn't off the wall and he forgot to order the new face. A few months went by and I wasn't in a hurry as I was still under construction. Finally he called and said it was in. He told me he was only working on certain days and those days didn't fit my schedule. Months went by and he charged the balance of the fireplace to my card without telling me. I went in to pick it up months later and he told me it was at the warehouse. Told me to come in the next day. I came in the next day and he wasn't there, called in sick. He finally brought it in a few days later and it was beat up. Paint all scratched and looking like crap. He blamed me for the condition because I didn't pick it up when he finally had it ready. His father, the owner finally stepped in to resolve the situation because I was done and wanted a refund. Ray told the story to his father in front of me and proceeded to tell lie upon lie which I called him out on. His father assured me he would get the unit looking new. I decided to see if he could deliver. This took weeks more. They were in the middle of moving their store and I was low priority. I went to the store several times to pick it up and it wasn't ready. Pops told me it would be ready and he left town. Another week later after flaking without notice dad finally showed up to install the unit. He did it and broke a piece of an electrical connection and didn't bother to tell me, instead he made it work till he could get out. I found the fault later. Ray will give you douche chills with his salesman behavior. I once walked in and found him asleep on a couch. Anyplace else will be better read more

I feel very misled by a sale and follow-up. I purchased a very pricey Lion grill from Greenforest three years ago. I purchased locally because they offered grill cleaning included with the sale. The business moved and I assumed they had closed. Recently, I rediscovered the store, now on Ashland. They tell me they will charge me (first offer $125 and second offer $95) to clean the grill. They claim the free offer was for one year only. Of course, nothing in writing. But it's a great way to get out of cleaning a grill. Went into the store on Sunday, 10/20 to try to ask a question about excessive smoke in the house from our wood burning fireplace - and possibly converting to a wood burning stove or insert, or installing a fan on the chimney. The guy that was there (and no other customers were in the store) was one of the most off-putting people I've ever encountered. He sat in the back room until I walked back there and looked at him and said "excuse me... sorry to bother you, but I have a question". Next, he said that installing a fan was $2300 (interesting since he had no idea of our specific situation - I find it interesting that they have a fixed price for all installations). I asked about installing a wood stove in the place of the wood burning fireplace, and he said my insurance wouldn't allow it. He said most insurance companies don't allow wood burning stoves anymore, and all insurance applications have that on it. I know for a fact that is not the case, but he was 100% sure of himself. He oddly added that "if the stove were not installed properly that it would be an issue. I said I'm not looking to install the stove myself, hence the reason I came in. I had to specifically (at that point) ask if they do any type of wood burning stove installations, and his response was, "well, not really". Seriously? If I asked up front if they did wood burning stove installations, why does he go into this rant about improperly installed issues with insurance?
