We ordered take out from this place. My brother was excited because they had this deal: $20.99+tax for 2 whole chickens, bread and four sides (veggies, beets, macaroni, and potato salad). For the price, the food was decent. I thought the chicken was pretty good with the BBQ sauce but the sides were pretty dry. The young worker there was a little sassy ... kind of like she didn't wanna be there. The old lady there was really sweet tho! If you dine there, it's another $3 to your bill. Not sure what happened to this hof brau that I have been going to for over 20 years now. I'm wondering if there has been a change in ownership. The food was different. The staff were different. The thick, sweet, and rich bbq sauce they usually have was thin and watery, you could tell they were trying to cut corners by significantly diluting the sauce with water. The rice pilaf was not the familiar buttery, fluffy rice pilaf they used to make. The place also needs a desperate upgrade and cleaning. The prices went up significantly during COVID, and compared to other hof braus in the peninsula, and especially because this place still only takes cash, I think the food is now overpriced to be honest. I'll still give it 3 stars in hopes of improved changes, and because I still want to support local restaurants and businesses. read more

Hi I'm going to be brutally and completely honest about my review. This place was probably one of the worst dine-in experiences in my entire life. This is probably way worser than Thick Of It by KSI. I've walked past this place multiple times with my friends as we walk home. We used to stand by the window and stare at the, what "seemed,, like fresh, luxurious, and appetizing rotisserie chicken. Besides that, the large poster of the family meal package, with the price of 30$ stood out to us. A meal at the local Wendy's down the street is 20$ for a person, so we thought this package deal was a big win for us. On October 10th, as me and my friends finished our important duties and responsibilities, we went to the restaurant. At first, me and my cousin made it a "surprise" for the other three friends that we were bringing along the way. But oh boy, we were all in a surprise for sure. As we walked in, it was our first time being there. The employees approached us, which made us feel pressured to order right away. My friend ordered for us, we got our trays and received our "delicious,, rotisserie chicken, two breads, and four sides. As we sat down, we didn't think that it was sooo bad. At first, it was all laughs and giggles because it was our first time dining in together, I even considered this as a club bonding. Then, that's when the experience took a turn. As my friend grabbed the utensils, and I distributed the plates, we began to eat. The chicken was absolutely dry as hell. I felt as if I overestimated this place as I continued to taste the dryness of the chicken, although I did not make any complaints yet because there were other food on the table. I watched as the misery unfold when I looked at my other friends. My friend sitting to my right said,"the jello is crunchy." Excuse me? Is that normal? I tasted the jello myself, it did not compliment the chicken at all. In fact, that's when I started contemplating my decisions. My friend sitting across from me ate the Mac and cheese. A few bites in, I noticed that my friend pushed it away. The problem was, my friend thought it was Mac and cheese, but it was macaroni salad. Despite it being something else, it tasted awful according to my friend's few bites. The texture and temperature, and the expression my friend made that very day will be something I'll never forget. I looked towards my other friend who sat directly across from me. He looked extremely depressed, and it looked like he was forcing himself to eat whatever was on his plate. However, I do have something nice to say about this place. The bread. I watched as my cousin apply the butter on the bread. Since the food was awful to begin with, I snatched a piece from him before he could try it. It was soft, and it tasted better than the proportions I previously swallowed. My friends seemed like they enjoyed it too. But as they finished the bread, the sorrowful energy came back. The laughs, and the smiles were gone at this point. I started placing my hand on my forehead. I felt so much stress trying to swallow and swallow the food, but it was hard. My friends kept complaining, and all I could do was feel sorry for them. I felt responsible for making them that way, I felt responsible for making them upset. This was my idea in the first place. I blamed my optimism, my high expectations, everything at that point. My friends kept asking each other if they were okay, especially me because of my visible upset expression. I almost started tearing up. I started talking to myself too, like why did I put us through this? why did I dress up nice for this occasion, why didn't I check the reviews sooner. To make it even worse, I know that the problem here is timing, but I had to wait half an hour for someone to use the bathroom. I had to build up the courage to use the opposite gender's bathroom. Even after using the bathroom, the vibe.. the energy at our table was still depressing. We tried to finish the food. It felt like we were at war. Fighting for our humanity. Fighting for the will to live. Fighting to continue LIVING and to continue trying to make up the money that was paid. The food, the "wonderful" experience was a total of $36 dollars in total. We packed up to leave, we left silently. I never left a place so fast in my entire life. Although, two of my friends couldn't keep quiet and kept making side complaints. I think I'd rather order a diabetic meal from McDonald's instead of wasting my money at a random restaurant. Or we should save money instead of eating out all the time. Do not eat here unless you want to feel depressed. Do not eat here unless you want a miserable, unforgettable, thanksgiving. Do not eat here unless you want to feel negative energy. People of Yelp: this is not a fancy pants restaurant! I've been coming to the "Coop" with my folks since I was just a wee child. There is no arugula in the building, and you won't find a guy blending roasted pepper aioli in the back kitchen. You have to meet some foods where they are. This place for example is a Hofbrau time machine! I always get the open faced turkey sandwich on enriched white bread with a heaping scoop of whipped mashed potatoes and slather the whole thing with gravy. It's really really tasty and harkens back to a simpler time. You know a time where you could get a dinner for under $10 bucks, and if something was under salted you simply used that shaker on your table? The foodie crowd is a spoiled bunch here in the Bay Area. Maybe I just like this place so damn much because it reminds me of my childhood. But, you also wouldn't drive a 1989 Toyota pickup and complain it doesn't handle like a Ferrari, would you? The side dishes were ok. The potato salad was good but needed more seasoning and the side salad was slighty soggy. Overall, I misjudged this place. They serve up some delicious rotisserie chickens. I can't wait to get some more. Service was good as well. From the previous reviews I was a little nervous but they were actually nice. Ive been going jere since I was very young with my family. The atmosphere gives off a homie vibe and the food is delicious and comforting. you get two sides and any cut of meat you want. It's one of the restaurants my husband and I go to A LOT. They always give you a lot of food. This one is a dollar cheaper than the Excelsior one so my husband thinks we should go here more often. Also, there is a new guy that is carving the meats (now and then), and he doesn't know portion control yet. If we're not at this Chick and Coop at the Top of the Hill , then, we're at the one in the Excelsior. We make the rounds. Considering that it costs $10.99 to get an Extreme Grand Slam at Denny's on Post Street, the Chick and Coops serves a lot more for their $8.99 ($9.99?) meals. It's like eating Thanksgiving portions with them. Lately, I'm going for their roast chicken dinners--either 1/4 a chicken or 1/2 a chicken--although they offer lots o meat, sliced by hand (turkey, roast beef, ham, pastrami, corn beef) and other meats (fish, hamburger steak, ribs, turkey legs and wings). The meat comes with a starch (baked potato, mashed potato, rice, or macaroni and cheese), bread with butter, and a vegetable (corn or green beans) or salad (tossed green, potato, macaroni, three-bean, or three bean salad or...the rice pudding [which isn't really a salad but you could have that instead of a salad]). My husband always goes for the pastrami (maybe fish if they have it) and their rice pudding. (The "moustache man" will slice you a lot of meat.) The rice pudding is better at this one than the one at Excelsior according to my husband. It's a real rice pudding as opposed to an egg jello/flan-ish thing with a cinnamon dusting. The tossed salad is better at the Excelsior one, but here, the Greek cashier will ask you if you like tomatoes. If you do, she'll heap it on your plate. Also, this is the place where you can request for a side of sour cream with your baked potato for no extra charge. In terms of sandwiches here, you can't get cheese. I also don't recommend the turkey leg or wing. Although they are soaking in juice, they still tend to be dry. My husband 's frugal depression-era 85+ year old parents also love this place when they're visiting from Joplin, Missouri. They know a great deal or should I say exceptional deal. My father-in-law gets the rib dinner and my mother-in-law gets their ham. They always asks to go here everytime... never fails. They get the senior discount, but it is still a lot for them to pay since in Missouri an expensive meal is $5 (lasagne), and they're used to getting all-you-can-eat bargains. They're always happy, and once, my father-in-law managed to eat all the ribs in his rib dinner. I was impressed. He really enjoyed it. Because of all this, I give it every star I can. read more

I instantly noticed the trays were slightly dirty...so I put them on the top glass shelf where you slide them to see if they were paying attention and wanted to see if the cooks and servers would see they were not properly clean and ask us to hold on so, they can get us some clean ones. But that didn't happen. The glass shelves were you slide your tray are broken, nasty and ran down uneven and not fit for a dog feeding. I was so embarrassed after I had bragged to my son about this place as a childhood dinning spot. So, our little bit of mashed potatoes with gravy and corn and half of chicken was over priced for this poor quality food. So, my son picked a booth for us to sit at by the door hallway to the restroom. The walls were dusty and nasty and the pictures on the wall were dusty and dirty. The seats were uncomfortable sunken in and not comfortable. The food was horrible a disgrace and the chicken was over cooked dried out, not one speck of flavor and the canned corn tasted like can corn, it was the nastiest food I HAVE ever eatten in 25 years. I have not had food this bland with no taste SINCE I was a 3 month old baby. And it made us sick. We were throwing up and had stomach aches and running to the bathroom. I was nauseated and light headed. We may have been poisoned by the food. The corn tasted like a tin can. The gravy to potatoe ratio was like you drowned the mashed potatoes and it was nasty no salt in the food. I would not serve that crap to my dogs. I really want to call the health department. I'm old-school myself and I even wore slip on loafers that matched the carpet! :) The Food is very Tasty! I switch it up from the chick dinner plate and the corned beef or roast beef. The Mashed Potatoes are to die for! & if you're lucky to taste their Mac & Cheese you've struck GOLD! I heard that's it's only available starting Thur for dinner through the Weekend. I discovered this place by accident since I was in the area but was pleasantly surprised. They have great tasting comfort food. I tried the rotisserie chicken and it came with BBQ sauce and sides. The chicken was nicely roasted and the BBQ sauce added a good touch to the flavor. The potato salad was good and slightly creamy. We had Chicken Coop cater my grandmother's funeral reception, what a horrible experience. The male caterer, who looked like Mario, Luigi's brother, sarcastically said 'You ate already,' and was reluctant to serve me a second serving of the roast beef--which by the way was dry and overcooked, tasteless and boring. I stood in front of him with an empty plate, for a good 20 seconds, baffled as to why he made that comment. Our gazes were locked, I held firm, and he eventually served me. But more disappointingly so, by placing the burnt ends and slivers of beef scraps on my plate while my expectation was for him to carve me a slice from the carcass. He didn't even pour me jus. Peculiarly thereafter, he covered the remaining beef hunk with foil and handed it to a female caterer, who then loaded the carcass to their van. Whenever I go I order one of two things - the chicken or roast beef. Both are delicious.
