Although the inside of this place looks like the dining room at a nursing home, don't let that deter you, Chick N Coop serves up some tasty hofbrau house style food in the slums of DC. The dinners will run you about $10 and consist of the meat of your choice with gravy/sauce/au jus, 2 sides of your choosing, and a dinner roll. The sides are kind of hit and miss. The mac and cheese is excellent, however the macaroni salad is horrible(bland and without flavor), the mashed potatoes are okay, and the potato salad is pretty good. They also make fat sandwiches for about $6 where they slice the meat right in front of you. The sandwiches are pretty large, so for the price it's a great deal. The pastrami here is pretty tasty, and they also will hook up combo sandwiches, such as a pastrami and roast beef combo(also tasty). The sandwich accoutrements are fairly limited, all they have is mustard, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. However they occassionally will get creative, the other day the dude threw au jus on my pastrami sandwich, so it made it kind of a hybrid between a french dip and a traditional pastrami, this concoction was both different and delicious. read more

Came here a few days before a holiday so it wasn't too hectic inside and decided to order the chicken with a few sides. The chicken was way too dry for me so I had to drench it in sauce to make it half way bearable. The hot potatoes were just regular potatoes that were baked. I had to put quite a bit if salt on it for me to partake in those potatoes. The inside looks as if you stepped into a time machine and went back to the 70s with the leather seating and plastic table. I got lost looking for a sushi place and came across this place by accident. It looked interesting from the outside so I thought I'd give it a try. The chicken appeared a little dry, so I opted for the corned beef sandwich. It was probably the most ill-prepared corned beef sandwich I've ever seen. It consisted of wheat bread, lettuce, tomato and several slices of corned beef. I've had corned beef sandwiches in Chicago so I know what they should look like. Not the best Hofbrau place I've been to, but of course I got there 90 min before closing so they were out of turkey. They had liver and onions sitting out all day that looked really dried up. When you step into this place, you feel that late 80s feeling. It's almost like you are walking into your school cafeteria when you were very young (1987 babies represent). A very nostalgic place for me, this 'coop' definitely still tastes and looks the same from when I was a little boy. When I was only 4-5 years old, I remember my dad would take me here after we dropped my big sister to school (i wasn't in school yet). He had just worked a night shift at SFGH, and always brought me somewhere to eat. Most of the time, we would be at good ol' Chick N Coop. Bedazzled with light bulbs lit around it's name, you couldn't miss it on a busy intersection in Daly City. It is right by a Goodwill, and also a mechanic's shop. The place looks almost exactly the same as a couple decades ago. The food here was/is always quality. The meat was fresh out the oven, your bread buttered by hand, and the prices were definitely worth it for the amount of food you were given. If I am correct, it's the same family running it. Also, they have plenty of space to sit, and a TV also playing Days of Our Lives or The Price is Right. :) You can get a quarter chicken (option to be covered in BBQ sauce :drool:), baked potato, greens, and buttered bread all for $5. I was just driving by top of the hill and was trying to get some ideas on what to get for lunch. By some good fortune, there was a car leaving the parking spot right in front of this place. I grabbed that opportunity and went in. I initially thought to just get the chicken, but I saw one of my favorite meats on the counter, which is the corned beef. It was the best decision i made so far. I also got hslf a chicken to go. M nieces loved the chicjen. it was moist, tasty and better than Boston market. The corned beef could have been cooked down sime more but it was good enough. I actually planned to make some corned beef fried rice but the while lb. that i got was immediately consumed. Last September, my family had this place cater my grandmother's funeral reception. I was the last to approach the caterers and when I got to the serving counter, the male caterer directly in front of me did not acknowledge my presence or make any eye-contact. Instead, he was wrapping a serving tray full of meat with aluminum foil. A woman server - who was also disassembling the food serving area - finally, actually asked me if I needed anything. She was several feet away and I felt extremely awkward. I then asked her where the plates were and the male caterer - who was still directly in front of me - immediately said: "HE ALREADY ATE!" At first I thought he was joking because he had a silly looking grin on his face. Also, because the nature of our ceremony was for my grandmother's passing, he might have been trying to cheer me up somehow. Apparently, this ASSHOLE was serious! I was/am very very upset with the situation and especially with this man. However, at the time, I did not want to escalate anything in front of my grieving family. I simply told him and her that they must have had me mistaken for my brother, who I possibly look like, because we have the same fuckin' DNA. Aaaaaaa, I will miss the ole Coop. I made myself a pledge the other day; I would stop going to a place that will make me vomit into my own mouth whilst leaving the premise. Chicken Coop, hence the name, the chicken should be good, my 40 year old wing tip shoes have more moisture. Dry, over cooked and nasty. All the beard is flavorless, shelter rolls, mashed potatoes are dry and sometimes taste like they are powdered. Salads are dry with no flavor because they sit for hours. I love the picture of lettuce and a tomato on a plate as an enticement, that simply is the holy grail for me, I must have that culinary treat. And yes, there's the ambiance. Dated, smelly leather booths that if you get the wrong one will move on it's on or you will sink right into it. But please, my fellow readers try and get a seat near the back of this joint, the delicious smell of urine permeates the air like a spring perfume, obviously from the spotless restrooms. This old and tired spot can be totally empty (usually is) and they top notch employees wont bus the tables full of dirty plates. Sad, for it was good once, now old, tired, dry food with no passion to make this simple basic comfort food. The place smells bad and it feels that none of the employees want to be there. Felt like I was going back to the dining hall at the dorm: grab a tray, get in line, put some slop on your plate, get a glass of water, and seat yourself at a table. Well, I guess that business model isn't so different from Fresh Choice either. But, the depressing decor here really makes it feel like you're slumming it. The roast chicken was juicy but bland, and the BBQ sauce, though on the weak side, was the only thing that saved it from Tastelessville. Mashed potatoes and corn were passable. The best part of the meal was probably the dinner roll and butter. I was in and out in about 10 minutes. We used to stop in the chicken coop for thanksgiving, But last year wasn't good, Everything was un-organized. They were more interested in fulfilling orders for baked turkeys than the patrons who would visit the chicken coop each year for thanksgiving. The turkey was dry, very little dressing which was not good. I like dressing with onion or celery in it. It was croutons slightly a little wet. That's not dressing. They didn't even have pumpkin pie. They had cheese cake. Well folks at chicken coop, we'll be cooking our own dinner this year or something. It's only two of us, but you wait a whole year and coop's dinner didn't come close to a thanksgiving dinner. One plus thing I will say is the folks that work for chicken coop are always nice. This is an old-school Hofbrau that I love for its nostalgic touch and good simple food. Not meant for going on dates, foodies, hipsters, etc, as I have already mentioned... kinda old school. I now regular their chicken dinner and even for lunch, my favorite sandwich spot. all the different chick n coop locations i've been to tend to be pretty consistent... at least whenever i've been there. i like the chicken dinners because the chicken is flavorful and tender. i'll usually chose sides based on how fresh they look when i'm there... so it's good you go up and order the food on the spot and can see what's available in front of you. like the outer mission location, the interior has probably never been changed or renovated since they first opened. there's usually plenty of tables and booths available if you don't want to take the food to go. read more
