BF found this place online and we stopped by late Saturday morning after some early errands. HK Chicken is in HK Market, which has its own free parking lot, making me super happy before I even stepped into the building. Once here, go straight in and walk towards the back to find HK Chicken. We haven't had breakfast or lunch yet, so we ordered everything: a whole fried chicken ($20), 13 piece fried chicken wings ($17), roasted sweet potato ($7), and 3 Korean pancakes ($2 each). I forgot to carry enough cash with me, but luckily the very kind and patient Korean ajumma at the register takes venmo, so I paid for everything with venmo. Food would be ready in 15 minutes so I strolled around the supermarket in the meantime. Everything was still warm when I took it home to enjoy and man, was the food good! The fried chicken has a very delicious crisped skin and pretty lean meat. The wings were juicy and crispy. The sweet potatoes came in a tray of 5-7 pieces, depending on the size, and were sweet with some caramelization -- the best sweet potato we've had, even compared to the home source of Korea! The Korean pancake comes with red bean filing and was so crispy and not too sweet. You can see the Korean ajummas cooking the food with care and it shows with the taste of the food. My brother heard about this place from Instagram, so we decided to try it out! It's located all the way at the back of the supermarket, and it's a very quaint but cute shop! The place is also cash-only. A sweet older lady took our order which was the fried whole chicken ($20) and 2 Korean fish-shaped red bean pancakes ($2 each). Total came out to exactly $24, so prices are reasonable! She told us our order would be ready in 20 minutes, so after waiting, we promptly got it. Our order also came with pickled radish and a spicy sauce. At first glance, the chicken looked amazing: perfectly golden and crispy. However, when we ate it, my brother and I thought it was okay. Flavor-wise, it is very simple, just salt, pepper, and maybe some garlic powder. Some parts of the chicken were perfectly salted while others were bland. Chicken was tender. It wasn't juicy, but not dry either. However, we both agreed the skin was the highlight. It was perfectly crispy with a good salty flavor. Pickled radish was good, but I thought the spicy sauce was just okay. I like sweeter sauces, and the spicy sauce was more on the salty side. As for red bean pancakes, they were warm and tasty! The outer edges had a nice crisp while the inside was more chewy. I liked that the batter wasn't doughy, and the red bean filling tasted homemade and was not too sweet. This small eatery inside HK Market sells bungeoppang (Korean fish bread) with red bean filling, baked goguma (sweet potato), and chicken wings. I've only had the bungeoppang ($1.50 each) and goguma ($3 or $5 options). I've always had the bungeoppang made fresh so it's piping hot and still crunchy around the edges. It's really satisfying and delicious - reminds me of the ones we'd get in Korea during our winter visits. These are traditionally made unlike the ones that are made with tapioca flour (for ex. Somi Somi or the little taiyaki stand in little Tokyo) which make it more chewy. These are more of a bready/pancake-like texture and therefore softer. They only offer red bean as a filling and are super generous with the amounts inside. Goguma is also very tasty and good value for the price. However, I'm so shocked and dismayed at the price inflation .. they raised prices 3x within this year as is and modified the quantity options as well. Best fried chicken in Koreatown hands down. They've perfected their method and don't try to jazz it up with special sauces and techniques. Whatever they do, it works. This place is located inside the HK Market, all the way in the back. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes for them to fry the chicken, so you can either call ahead of time or you can just do some grocery shopping while you're waiting for your chicken. I always get the chicken wings, not the whole chicken. Normally, it's pretty much $1 per piece, which is a little pricey, but these pieces are pretty big! If you order in bulk, you'll get a cheaper price. What I love even more about this place is their dipping sauce. It's so good and goes perfectly well with the crispy fried chicken. They also give you pickled radish, also very good. All this is included in the price, so if you ask for more, they'll give you extra for free! They also serve boonguh bbang, which is the fish shaped bread with red bean, and baked sweet potatoes. I haven't tried either but I've heard great things about them too. PSA: it's cash only. The owner, whom busy making in front of the gas top to replicate same fishlike snacks, friendly gives me plenty of fishlike cakes as pay $5.00 because today is the special. I am eating them with breathless and my nose running instead of my eyes. The owner gave me some tissues which usually used as an individual wrapping to deal with my runny nose and giving hope everything will be ok.
