As far as fried chicken goes this place is the top of the heap here in Washington. A co-worker and I scoured the internet looking for a place to satisfy our need for southern food. Both us having lived a portion of our lives in the Carolinas we know the fare that comes from that region fairly well. First the bad. The greens weren't seasoned with anything as far as I could taste. The good: The chicken was amazing and I can't wait to try all the other stuff on their menu that sounded great. Don't take this wrong, but everything was better than it looked. We split a fried chicken dinner and two sides. It looked like typical grocery store chicken, but three was some spice in the breading that made it it very good. One side was jojo's which are small potato wedges. We had pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and potato salad. The beans and potato salad were top-notch. The meat was great, but the BBQ sauce was spicy (which is fine, unless you're me... sigh) and quite vinegar-y. Delicioussss Had to come up to Gonzaga for a week and this was about a mile away. I ordered the 3 piece chicken with red beans and rice and macaroni salad. The chicken had great flavor, it wasn't too salty and the breading provided a great crunch. I loved the red beans and rice, they add some hot sauce to it which provides a kick when eating. I really like the hole-in-the-wall, intimate atmosphere. The employees seemed very nice, though they didn't have much knowledge of the menu or at least projected a forced indifference. Prices were on the high side, but if that's what it takes to keep a nice local eatery in business, I have no problem paying more than some gnarly KFC. One of the other reviewers said that they don't serve hush puppies, but they definitely do. I found them to be small and dry, so they weren't a highlight. The fried chicken was above average and worth trying again. I asked for butter and they gave me a piece out of the freezer that was rock hard. Great southern food restaurant. Went today with a ton of people from work, and although it is a small space, all 12 of us could sit comfortably. The owner was present and very sweet. He made sure we had everything we needed and thanked us for coming in. They said the food would take awhile, but for all of us, it was MAYBE 10 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the catfish, which they make fresh so that took the longest. I got the 6oz catfish, a roll, jojos, and hush puppies for $13! It was a ton of food too. The catfish was extremely fresh and seasoned well. The hush puppies were excellent and the jojos had a great seasoning as well. My meal came with target (it was perfect) but they also have various homemade sauces to choose from. You can also by large things of the sauces to take home. Between the five of us, I got to sample a good portion of the menu. Fried Chicken? Moist and flavorful. Brisket? A little on the tough side but the sauce was pure heaven, sweet with just the right amount of tang. The Greens? Matt, who is from Georgia summed it up by saying they were almost as good as his moms.
