Big boy pibil with rice/beans and BLT salad

Best chicken spot in Denver -- from the team behind the famed Riot BBQ (my fave BBQ spot in Denver) comes this spot focused on chicken. Adorable little spot for a quick lunch or takeout from Riot BBQ's Chef Manny Barella and Pitmaster Patrick Klaiber -- plus the rest of their lovely team. This spot is where Texas barbecue meets Northern Mexico's pollo asado traditions. This place reminded me how good chicken can really be! Just some of their mouthwatering menu: - Big Boy Pibil 1/2 Chicken (tangy, earthy, a little spice) - Señor Loco 1/2 Chicken (classic citrus pollo asado vibes) - "I'll Have a Sandwich" (chicken salad on a croissant) - Wrap It Up (a smoked chicken caesar wrap) - Mexican Protein Bar (turkey tamale with mole jojo) - Cesar and BLT salads Wed-Sun | 11am-8pm

Stopped in for lunch. Definitely a small spot but you order at the counter and find a seat. We ordered the chicken plate and a salad. Both were super yummy! Beans was one of my sides and I want a tub of them. Great spot!

Couldn't believe this place is right in our neighborhood. I mean you can't go wrong with smoked chicken this place didn't disappoint.

Asked for a recommendation and ordered the Big Boy Pibil with beans and rice. Absolutely delicious! So flavorful, tender and moist. The place was packed with other hungry customers but service was fast. Seating is limited and there is no bathroom for customers, but don't let that stop you.

2nd visit. I came on this snowy Friday to try their Mexican Protein Bar which are corn husk wrapped masa tamales. The masa is from Don Zorros and was filled with smoked turkey. The mole rojo is from Manny Barella's grandma. I got a small container of mole and got a 2nd one for free. Steamed well. The masa was slightly dry which the mole rojo sauced it just right. My order of 2 tamales for $18 includes 2 sides. I got the Mexican dirty rice and house side salad. Both good. I added Cerebral Brewing Just the Hops with guava water. The hops made it a refreshing drink. I was served by Jamie H. He was one of two employees. He said they had a brief surge when they opened today, but the snowfall has suppressed customers. He said that one day last week, they had continous demand until 7pm. I saw a Doordash person showed up to pick up an order. The dining area was clean and comfortable despite the chilly weather outside. I will be back to sample other menu items.

Now I want to make this location my go-to. Its location is convenient. On north end of the charming South Pearl Street, it's an easy access from I-25. Everything is so walkable from there to other shops on the same street or even on the other side of the highway. After entering the restaurant, I noticed that there is/was a large menu on the the left wall right at the entrance so I took the time to peruse before I turned my attention to the ordering counter. And there, a young lady with a very warm smile was already standing there staring at me with a pleasant "Hi". What an attentive service that was! I am pretty familiar with their menu although I did ask her some questions to which she replied with the needed information. One of the questions I had was about one of the sauces (that they offer complimentarily for chicken meat) and it's called piri piri. As far as I can remember, she said it's tomato based with a little spiciness (it might contain some red peppers as well.) Chimichurri was simply too ordinary as that is what I always get so I decided to go out of my way to do something not so ordinary; I got to be a little adventurous. What I ended up getting me was 1/2 of dark chicken, a side of smashed cucumber slices (salad) and a side of mac and cheese. Once my food was packed and ready, a different worker (male) handed me my food. He was also very polite and cordial. I always appreciate their top-notch customer service. I was on my way to work my side hustle downtown so this meal was what I needed to consume before that job assignment. Once I got to my car, I opened my bag and immediately started my early dinner. The dark chicken meat was perfected moist. The red sauce I got gave it a nice kick to the whole enjoyment of the main. The smashed cucumber is light and refreshing with some tanginess to it. The mac and cheese (I believe) is a vegan dish (am I right) but whatever they use to make the typical mac and cheese taste is/was still there with no sacrifice. And get this, nothing (absolutely NOTHING) was oversalted. Lately, I have been encountering more and more restaurant where they season their dishes with too much salt which truly upset me. Chook's conscientious way to cooking all the dishes is what I can appreciate the most. And the quality of ingredients they use are almost guaranteed. This place is simply not for chicken or sub or salad lovers. If you want to spend a casual after 5pm time, they do serve quality beers, wines and cocktails on top of soft drinks. As much as I appreciate this restaurant, I am not sure if it is talked about amongst my foodie friends. My sincere hope is that they utilize your business as often as I do. You deserve so much appreciation and accolades from them.

The prices on everything keep creeping up while the quality goes down. I understand food inflation, but coupled with declining quality I'm just no longer a regular customer anymore. The last 3 times I've gone, the fries were very brown on the outside but not overcooked, indicating the oil was old and needed to be changed, this gives them an off flavor that's not good. When done right, their fries are fantastic, however this is a regular issue now. Also, they changed their burger in the past year, something I used to order a bunch, but not at all anymore. It used to be a grass fed patty and now they call this a wagyu blend, but it's awful and tasteless compared to the old one. Additionally, their wings (for some reason only when getting to-go) are either way over sauced, sitting in a pool of sauce and thus get soggy or they're under-sauced. The issue with the oil is really what gets me though. I'm guessing they're dragging it out longer before changing it to save money, but they're doing it at the cost of quality and now they've lost a regular customer. I may revisit next year, but not anytime soon. Employees are relatively friendly and service is ok, ambience is typical of a wing joint.

You place your order at one of the kiosks, then just watch the pickup screen until your order is ready. The whole process is quick, simple, and efficient. I ordered the seasonal Thai Chicken Wrap with fries, and honestly, it's one of the best wraps I've had in a while. The crispy chicken tenders, Asian herb mix, crispy shallots, and green papaya dressing all had their own distinct flavors, but together they created a wrap that was incredibly balanced and satisfying. It felt like every ingredient was thoughtfully seasoned and intentionally paired. The biggest compliment I can give? I loved it so much that I went back a second time the same week. Definitely worth a visit.

First, wife is a vegetarian and they had no mains other than Mac and cheese for her. She ordered the salad without chicken which was $25. They knocked it down to $22 after I asked why it was the same price without meat, which still seemed like a lot for a salad with no protein. Kids' Mac and cheese was not the same receipe as last time; it was a different noodle and seemed to be needing some salt as it was pretty bland. Unlike our last visit they did not include an ice cream for dessert. My fried chicken and waffles was ok--the breading was a bit soggy though and I much preferred the Nashville hot chicken from my last visit.
