I like this location of Chook very much! The one on University and Orchard had been my go-to for quite some time before my first visit to this location (in Wash Park). Now I want to make this location my go-to. Its location is convenient. On north end of the charming South Pearl Street, it's an easy access from I-25. Everything is so walkable from there to other shops on the same street or even on the other side of the highway. After entering the restaurant, I noticed that there is/was a large menu on the the left wall right at the entrance so I took the time to peruse before I turned my attention to the ordering counter. And there, a young lady with a very warm smile was already standing there staring at me with a pleasant "Hi". What an attentive service that was! I am pretty familiar with their menu although I did ask her some questions to which she replied with the needed information. One of the questions I had was about one of the sauces (that they offer complimentarily for chicken meat) and it's called piri piri. As far as I can remember, she said it's tomato based with a little spiciness (it might contain some red peppers as well.) Chimichurri was simply too ordinary as that is what I always get so I decided to go out of my way to do something not so ordinary; I got to be a little adventurous. What I ended up getting me was 1/2 of dark chicken, a side of smashed cucumber slices (salad) and a side of mac and cheese. Once my food was packed and ready, a different worker (male) handed me my food. He was also very polite and cordial. I always appreciate their top-notch customer service. I was on my way to work my side hustle downtown so this meal was what I needed to consume before that job assignment. Once I got to my car, I opened my bag and immediately started my early dinner. The dark chicken meat was perfected moist. The red sauce I got gave it a nice kick to the whole enjoyment of the main. The smashed cucumber is light and refreshing with some tanginess to it. The mac and cheese (I believe) is a vegan dish (am I right) but whatever they use to make the typical mac and cheese taste is/was still there with no sacrifice. And get this, nothing (absolutely NOTHING) was oversalted. Lately, I have been encountering more and more restaurant where they season their dishes with too much salt which truly upset me. Chook's conscientious way to cooking all the dishes is what I can appreciate the most. And the quality of ingredients they use are almost guaranteed. This place is simply not for chicken or sub or salad lovers. If you want to spend a casual after 5pm time, they do serve quality beers, wines and cocktails on top of soft drinks. As much as I appreciate this restaurant, I am not sure if it is talked about amongst my foodie friends. My sincere hope is that they utilize your business as often as I do. There are so many delicious sides that it is honestly hard to choose - from potato wedges to chicken soup to salad. I ordered the Chook for You with Chook wedges and I added an extra side of chicken noodle soup. To say I left stuffed is an understatement, and that was after I shared my chicken and potato wedges with my family! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, while the wedges were soft and warm. Dropped in here unexpectedly but so glad we did. Their rotisserie chicken was hot and fresh. I am not a white meat person but boy I might be now, at least from here. Tender, juicy, flavorful and the sauces take it up even another level of happiness. Service was amazing too. You order up front and they bring your food to the table. This place is the best Chook location I have been to since they closed the Stanley Hanger location. I had a funny experience trying to order carryout from the Orchard location. This person named Derek kept hanging up the phone on me!!!! Like 10 times in a row! I compared the current menu versus the 2022 version. Prices have increased about $ .50 for each item. There are more details regarding ingredients for every item, so easier to identify food allergies You still order at the counter, get a table sign and they deliver your food and drinks to you. The offer a few canned beers and premade batched cocktails plus Attimo wines (red, white, rose and bubbles) by the glass. I got the 1/4 chicken meal with 1 side (charred veggies) for $ 12.95 + an additional side of Mashers & Gravy for $3.75; The mashed potatoes were good. The charred veggies had broccoli, cauliflower, dukkah spice, carrots, nuts and cashews. They have a lot of fun sides we like the corn and mashed potatoes a lot. The restaurant is very modern and has a covid-19 friendly dining hall complete with hand sanitizer and social distancing. The menu is very accommodating for single dining as well as group dining. They have combos that great for sharing at an affordable price. My friend and I were hungry so we opted to share a whole chicken with two large sides (mashed potatoes and partly charred veggies). The macaroni and cheese was OK. The pasta was overdone and there wasn't a lot of cheese sauce or flavor. The brown butter squash was under done which made it impossible to eat because the rind was so tough. Just need to be cooked longer. I need to probably try it again maybe earlier in the day. We counted 8 orders ahead of us, but these guys made things look easy. Lenny and Jade both were attentive. They were checking on us throughout the process. Fantastic. Husband and I entered and ordered at the counter. It was pretty loud, so we didn't hear what the other ordered. We grabbed a bottle of water and cups and headed to the only open seats at the back counter. The back counter has 3 seats that face the charcoal pit. My husband was captivated by the spits filled with chickens, which we called "chicken TV." Turns out we ordered way too much food, but it was all delicious. We each got a quarter chicken--one dark meat, one white meat. We also ordered 4 sides and were accidentally served a 5th. Next time we'll know to order two sides total and maybe order more chicken. Chicken was excellent: tender, juicy, flavorful. Not sure where they source their birds, but they do it right. Chimichurri sauce was a nice touch, but this chicken doesn't really need any additional sauce. The sides: roasted vegetables with dukkah had a smoky flavor and were cooked perfectly--possibly my favorite side; apple slaw was vinegar-y, crisp, and delicious; roasted potatoes were good (some might say they could have been roasted a bit longer) and tossed in delicious seasoning--maybe Chook salt; potatoes and gravy were whipped to a silky smooth texture with really fresh potato flavor; macaroni and cheese was a hearty orrechiette pasta with classic bechamel cheese sauce and breadcrumbs. Love that they serve drinks in glass not plastic and offer fully compostable takeaway. Service was fast and friendly--on a busy Friday they kept things moving but never rushed us. I was impressed with the expediter and the person overseeing the chickens (chicken-isto? chicken master?).
