I went here for dinner while on a business trip based on a Yelp search. I have always liked good southern fried chicken. Upon arriving I found it a little difficult to park due to all of the other cars but then that can also be a good sign. This is a very casual restaurant that does have some indoor seating but most people get it to go here. Prices are low and you get a lot of food for your $. I ordered a 3 piece chicken meal with dirty rice and shack balls as sides. I managed to snag a table while waiting for the food that arrived about 10 minutes. The chicken was very hot temp wise. It was more heavily breaded and greasy than I like but still good. I gave it a 3. The dirty rice was ok too. (3). The shack balls (which is a local specialty) are breaded and fried boudoin balls that were good and filling. The counter service was very friendly. Overall I am going to give this meal a 3 but a low 3. To my tastes this is what I call cheap chicken that is filling and inexpensive but basic in flavor. One of my favorite places to get chicken! I've eaten from here 3 times in the past 20 days. Atmosphere: this place is always busy when I go! Lunch, it's packed but they get the orders out quickly. Dinner, it's still packed but they still give great service. Taste: they don't skimp on freshness. It's fresh at noon and fresh at 9:30. I always get a mixed meals (either 2 or 3 pieces) and I get it to go. It's piping hot from the time I get until the time I get in my car and drive home. I always save the biggest piece for my leftovers the next day. It reheats extremely well. Their sides are delicious too. They're spaghetti and cheese is flavorful and the red beans and rice is filling and yummy! Service: quick, friendly, down home service. They know they have a job to do but still make their customers happy and laugh and joke along with them. Parking: is in a lot and while it's always packed, there's always available parking. There is no drive through. Convenience: You can call ahead to order and pick up and also order through Waitr and have it delivered. This place is a great experience and is inexpensive! You know all that hoopla over the Chicken sandwich from Popeye's? Why bother with any of that when we've got Chicken Shack, the best god-damned Chicken sandwich in town already, just didn't franchise like the other guys. We're better for it. My understanding is that this is sort of like tempura style fried chicken. It's a different flavor and texture than what you'd get at Church's (right next door) or from Popeye's. Took my lunch back to work, sat down and as I started to chow down, my coworkers looked up at me from their meager fast food or home made PBJs with shock and awe like as they smelled the goodness from the chicken, saying things like you've been here for a few weeks and you found that? where? I've been back so many times I lost count, I guess I was so hungry I forgot to hit my Yelp check-in button. A few years ago they started serving a chicken sandwich, I got his for my then 7 yo son who fell in love with it. Now he's 11 and he still hankers for one of these every few months. Getting into the parking lot is a bit of a maneuver, but once you're in, walking in you're greeted with smiles from the staff who are working like crazy to get orders out. There's a small dining room for mostly 2 people at a time. Most of the traffic is carry out. All orders are made to order so you have to wait a few minutes to get your food. Chicken was soooo oily and barely had flavor. For some reason the chicken was super chewy idk how they made that possible. Oil tasted very old like they reused it 100 times. Fries were flavorless and tasted like frozen fries. Beans were OK they just tasted like they threw in a bunch of ham flavor in there. Probably the best fried chicken I've ever had...and I've been all over the states! This place is way better than Churches, Popeyes, KFC, and some other mom and pop's places that I've been to. Did you know that their fried chicken stayed crispy for at least 12hrs? Yes, I bought fried chicken from them and drove home to Kentucky and my fried chicken was still crispy and tasty! I love this place. Every time I come to Baton Rouge I have to have a Shrimp Poboy. They are delicious and filling. Since they are closed on Sunday I had to make a Saturday run in order to bring some back for the rest of the family. Even after two days in the fridge a quick heat up in the oven is just as hood as the day of purchase.
