They had great Lent options (including lobster) and seem to have daily specials that usually includes something for the non-taco person (chicken salad on croissant comes to mind). I really enjoyed the Caesar Salad I had on my last visit. My friend had the (too-pricey-for-my-budget) lobster roll and it looked so delicious with drawn butter. Mmm. I'm still a fan of this place in its new location, though since they're now M-F til 2:30 only, due to their office park location, I have to make an effort to remember to stop by. It's a pleasant little location, with high table seating near the counter and another room with more tables. There's no building signage but the logo is on the window and there are on-course signs planted in the landscaping. There is plenty of parking, with dedicated parking spots just by the door. The menu's not as large as it was before the move, but it's still extensive, with some non-Mexican lunch specials if that's your thing. Vegetarian and gluten-free items are clearly marked and their famous fish tacos, fruit smoothies and the "El Cheapo" burrito still feature. Gone are the salsa bar and the horchata, though they'll give you little cups of mild, green medium or hot salsa. I got two veggie tacos for five bucks and change plus tip; there are plenty of items under $8, so lunch with a drink for under $10 is still possible if you're careful. Service is friendly and they'll bring the food to your table. The tacos were tasty if mild, and the cheese fairly minimal (when I asked for vegetarian options, she asked if I wanted cheese - vegans take note). The chips were warm, which is a nice touch. So my friend was told to try out the Lobster Tacos here, "They're " to be exact. So she grabbed an order of 3 and posted on Snapchat. I love trying new things and I have not had lobster tacos, I immediately asked her where she got them and I hurried to make an order of my own. The lady cashing out was friendly, it was about a 20 min cook time which was no rush for me. I also ordered their garlic mashed potatoes, I don't know why but I wanted to try them. After eating my tacos and potatoes, I send a message to my friend to make sure we thought the same thing. You can taste that the food is very fresh and healthy but lacks actual taste. My mom and I stopped by here for lunch! We are so glad they re-opened and we found the new location! We got the fish burrito, chicken tacos and a side of beans and rice. Everything was really good and fresh! Chicken was well seasoned and not dry! The fish burrito well balanced with all the toppings and the black beans were yummy! My only complaint is the refried beans had no flavor at all! The texture and consistency was fine but it needed butter or some salt as it was very bland. We will be back though! read more

Boyfriend and I were in the area for a craft show (unique Christmas gifts) and we decided to YELP nearby places for food. We love Mexican food and this place caught our eye for great reviews and "the best fish tacos" which they are known for. Service: 5 stars- excellent! The girls were so sweet and helpful! They knew the menu and gave great recommendations. I think they need to add a tip jar because they were great! Food: The food decent. We loved the steak tostada and the burrito. It didn't really have a traditional Mexican taste, but it was yummy. The portions were huge and filling. I would recommend the Horchata (which was fantastic). I loved the sour cream packets as well as the wrapped silverware. The only thing that I do not recommend is the nacho cheese. We ordered the "medium" and it was like a soup bowl- which isn't a bad thing but it wasn't the best cheese I've had. The place was clean with plenty of parking and just a fun place to be! Holy "guacamole" where do I begin... it definitely didn't look like your typical Mexican restaurant when we walked in, but after looking at the menu online, we decided we wanted to give it a go. The 3 employees working seemed as though they had no interest in being there whatsoever. The older lady who took our order was quite unfriendly and generally acted like we were a bother. I ordered a chipotle steak and potato burrito (no bell peppers, add cheese), a battered fish taco on a corn tortilla (no cucumber), and a chicken quesadilla for us to share. My boyfriend ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and the 2 chicken tamales for $3.99. It all came with complimentary chips and salsa. I was intrigued by the chips as there were some regular white ones, and some blue corn ones too! I like blue corn chips. Honestly, they were nothing special and kinda just tasted like a bag of Tostito's. The salsas were SO BLAND. NO FLAVOR. The green one was mediocre at best. The steak and potato burrito... the garlic mash inside was great! But that's all... the steak was extremely dry and flavorless. The chipotle mayo really lacked chipotle. The tortilla was stale and hard in some places. I honestly feel like I was eating a child's concoction of garlic mash, mayo and dry leftover meat. It really reminded me of a sleepover where children dare each other to eat strange combinations of foods. The fish taco... the item that is most boasted... wasn't bad! Definitely could tell it was a beer batter. The fish part was good. The chipotle mayo, again, no flavor. It generally comes with cabbage, chipotle mayo, cilantro and cucumber. I ordered it without cucumber. I'm pretty sure they just used a bag salad and not cabbage, considering I had strips of carrot on my taco? The tortilla was cold, hard and stale. All in all, I've had far better breaded fish tacos at a fraction of the cost here. The breakfast burrito was so obviously made with powdered eggs, which was a real disappointment given the cost! My boyfriend said that he could have just as easily gotten the same thing, only better, from McDonald's. The tamales.. oh the tamales.. after my first bite, the words that came out of my mouth were "oh no, honey... what are you doing?!" Dry. Bland. Itty bitty. Tasteless, texture NIGHTMARE. I was very disappointed with these. I love tamales, and I order them frequently. The quesadilla.. that chicken quesadilla. I am so disappointed. I was excited because of the way they describe their chicken, being cooked over a fire in secret seasonings and juices... got my mouth WATERING. What did I get? I got what could only be described as bad quality, bland STEAMED chicken, and some oily, melted cheddar cheese on a flour tortilla. It kind of reminded me of all those "don't get paid until next week so I gotta throw together what's in the fridge" meals. Suffice to say that we won't be returning. Went here for takeout breakfast with my girlfriend. Prices are reasonable. Lots of egg on breakfast burritos and was easy to customize exactly how we wanted. When I walked in I was greeted by the owner who was very friendly. They also have a special for free coffee or tea if you buy breakfast which makes it an even better value. The location is in an office park which makes it harder to spot from the road, but definitely worth a visit for good cheap breakfast. read more

She moved from Glen Ellen to Lombard . located just west of Main Street and a quarter mile east of Finley on 22nd street in a business park . A little tricky to find . She had to leave Glen Ellen due to a Landlord that couldn't give grace to a small business trying to survive during a unprecedented pandemic. Hours of operation have changed 7:30 am- 2:30 pm . We picked up dinner from Chicks n' Salsa on a weeknight and basically enjoyed our meal. Overall, I'm a fan of this place. The food is what I describe as "clean" Mexican food (it isn't dripping with grease) and nearly all of the items have been tasty. My go-to is a burrito of any kind, they make a really solid burrito. Additionally, their quesadilla is enjoyable as are their tacos. However, I'd suggest steering clear of the nachos. We ordered a large size with cheese and meat and it just was poorly executed. The cheese was quasi-melted and the meat was spread on top causing it to roll/fall off when you tried to pry a chip out from the batch. The portion sizes are solid, the prices are good, and they make the orders pretty quickly. I Just went to the new location inside of an office building. I know the location seems odd, but the food was even better than before. I wish the owner nothing but the best of luck. It sounded like she had some issues with the landlord at the old location. It's really unfortunate because she was at the old location for nearly 20 years. With that being said, I'm sure she's doing well based on the amount of people coming in for take out. Overall, really enjoyed my food and I can't recommend this place enough. I am giving two stars because this place has potential. I loved the menu. And, I wanted to love this place as it would be so convenient for me. But, they need to address some serious fundamental issues. I tried two of their supposedly best dishes, the baja fish tacos and the grilled 1/2 chicken platter with two sides. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy them at all because of other problems. Most important, I tried all three sauces (the verde, red and hot red). They were so unbalanced. Honestly, some of the worst salsas I've had anywhere. The green has the consistency of a vinegrette salad dressing. I could not taste onion, cilantro, jalapeno or serrano in any of the food or salsas, let alone tomatillos or tomatoes. The red salsa taste like someone couldn't figure out how to roast a pepper and just went with canned chipotles in adobo sauce. And, the smoke taste literally overpowered rather than freshened up everything I put it on. The rice tastes like a bad version of dirty rice. It's not Mexican rice with the onions, peas and carrot pieces. I ordered a diet coke. But, I paid almost $4 for a large diet pepsi from a machine like they have at a gas station. I did not mind the dispenser. But, $4 for a soda on take out??? Lastly, they had at least three full, giant baking trays of cooked and partially cooked chicken pieces laying out uncovered on a long counter in full view of me and other customers the whole time I waited there. So, that would explain the dry chicken. I really wanted to try some other items as they have an exciting menu. I can't find a good shrimp burrito near me. But, I would not recommend this place until they fix some of these issues. They need to find someone who can make great salsas. I suggest the owner stop by the Taco Salsa Bar on Ogden in Westmont. Those two brothers and their wives are putting out over a dozen great salsas everyday. Their chile de arbol salsa is amazing. Also, Los Burritos Tapatios has the best salsa verde con aguacate. There's at least three of them in there area. Two of them are right up the street from Chicks N Salsa. read more

The classic 3.5 star review. I walked in and I thought I was in a Baja Fresh, between the salsa bar, and black and white decor. I ordered the double leg (2 thighs and 2 legs) with two sides and an extra side. For $9.00, that's really good value. The fact that they have Tazo bottled iced tea is another huge plus in my book, as I am hooked on their Giant Peach tea. They gave me a basket of chips and I tried a couple of the salsas. They were all pretty mild, except for the habanero, which had a good amount of kick. I like green salsas in general, but the chipotle was probably my favorite here. I waited 6 or 7 minutes for my food. The four pieces of chicken I got looked like the runt of the chicken litter; the pieces were so small I thought I was being served pigeon. That said, the seasoning was really good, the skin was crisp, and the meat was juicy. Not a ton of meat granted, but what I had was cooked very well. For sides, I had the grilled veggies. Bell peppers, red onions, and carrots were well seasoned with salt and pepper and tasted great. The garlic mashed potatoes were quite good, but maybe the could have used a little more butter. For the final side, I could have gone with tortillas or corn muffins. I chose the latter and got two pale white muffins. I took a bite of one and there were just a ton of corn kernels inside. To repeat, it was just a plain muffin with corn kernels. It was terrible and I didn't touch it again. I had a good experience. The service was decent, not great, but not bad. I would probably return since most of the food is made very well and is offered at a fair price. But no corn muffins ever again! read more

This restaurant is probably one of the best Mexican restaurants in Lombard. In terms of authenticity, there may be more "authentic" restaurants elsewhere since it seems more of a franchise However, the tacos are straight up bomb! I've only tried the fish and shrimp tacos. Both are very good! You can get the fish tacos either grilled or fried. The fried fish tacos are super crispy and the sauce that comes with it compliments the tacos very well. As you wait for your meal, they will give you chips and salsa. The chips are fresh and warm. The salsa can be picked up at the salsa bar and there are 4 or 5 varieties you can choose from. The staff are really nice and friendly even though it can get really busy during lunch. FYI- you may need to clean your own tables during rush hour since the staff are busy making and preparing the food. Overall, I give this place 4 stars for their service and food. read more

A friend of mines wife fancies herself as a fish taco afficiantado, and she recommended I try this joint out as we share the same desire for this fine delicacy. I did my research, checked the Yelp reviews and read the menu cover to cover prior to even getting in the car to make the trip. Upon arrival I didn't need to think twice about my order...three fish taco meal, two baja (fried) and one grilled. And while I waited for my order to be completed, Guacamole. A quick stop at the salsa bar... (seriously than a bar bar... Salsa bars are my second favorite type of bar) and I sat down to begin my journey into Chicks N Salsa.. The Guac was pretty good and very affordable considering the portion (almost double what you would get at the likes of Chipotle) chips were standard. Salsas were all very good. On to the tacos..Not disappointed. Nice meaty cuts of fish. Good crunch on the fry. Fresh veggies of cucumber and cabbage were a nice compliment. My only minor complaint is I wanted more of the spicy mayo.. I'm sure I could have asked for some, but I was busy eating. The grill taco was just as good. Nice flavor and a nice piece of fish. Such a pleasure to enjoy tacos when I don't have to dump salt on them for flavor. OH! And they have horchata... as most Mexican restaurants should.. Very Cinnamony. Boy, things are getting rough for the taco places... there are so many places to get a great taco for just a few bucks that the standards are quite a bit higher now than they were a few years ago. The place is called Chicks 'n' Salsa, so I brought Lisa and my favorite hot sauce with me... I'm glad I brought my chick, but they had a reasonably good hot sauce (el yucateco) there, so I could have left mine at home. OK, in all fairness, it took me a little bit to figure out the concept. I ordered a three taco combo, Steak, Chicken and Carnitas.. and because I felt the need to be thorough (not gluttonous..... thorough) I also got a fish taco (beer battered) and a platter of rice and beans. Lisa got a fish taco and a carnitas taco.. she is not nearly as thorough as I am. We also got a 4oz thingy (ramekin) of Guacamole and some chips. OK, so maybe I was a little hungry. We both tried the fish taco's first.. and realized that they were sorely lacking in flavor... I'm not of the mind to dump salsa on a fish taco.. but we found that they offer fresh chopped cilantro at the salsa bar (four salsa's to pick from.. I like the Habanero one) and there was a slice of lime in my food basket.. cilantro and lime and suddenly my fish taco is pretty good. Not epic, but pretty good. I used salsa's and hot sauce to add flavor to the rest of the tacos, tried them plain first and then added stuff. The steak and chicken were decent, I really liked the carnitas. They served the "rice and beans platter" in kind of a strange way, using a three portion divided plastic plate with one of the sections empty. It was fine, just kind of odd. I liked the restaurant, it's definitely got a fast food feel... but there seems to be a focus on good ingredients. Since my trip to San Diego last fall, I have been craving fish tacos like mad. And while several restaurants have attempted them, none came close to anything I had on my trip. After reading the good reviews of the fish tacos on yelp, and being in the neighborhood (thanks to the much improved iphone app!) I decided that I must try them. And they did not disappoint. I ordered the baja tacos and my husband ordered the chicken enchiladas. Because we didn't really realize the size of our meal, we also ordered nachos. (Photos posted of all three.) Nachos were large and toppings were fresh (guac that came with it was great and the cheese actually tasted like real cheese, not some cheese-like substitute.) Baja tacos were excellent - almost exactly like what I had in San Diego. My husband thought the enchiladas were "pretty good," but I wasn't too impressed with the bite I had, although the sides that came with it were good. One negative was that the seating area was a little dirty (staff just need to sweep up the floors and clean the tables a bit more often), although the kitchen area was immaculate, so don't think that I'm critiquing the whole operation. Also, everything is served in disposable containers - even with disposable flatware. Considering that the flatware was wrapped in plastic, I doubt that it was biodegradable, although I could be wrong. All of the extra garbage seemed a bit unnecessary and made me feel like I should bring my own plate and fork with me next time. What made it even more ironic was the fact that right next to where you picked up the food, they have a copy of a news article with the headline mentioning how "eco-friendly" the food is. The food may be eco-friendly, but what they serve it on sure isn't. I will definitely be back for the fish tacos though and think that if you're a fan of them, you can't go wrong here. If only they served margaritas, it would be upgraded to regular hang-out status! read more

Tucked away in the corner of the shopping mall this place is a winner. We had the fish tacos, tamales and the tres leches. The food was hot, fresh and outstanding. There were generous amount of chicken in the tamales and the Tilapia in the fish tacos was light and flakey. You can customize the spice level with the salsa bar. The tres leches was moist and rich. First things first. Is THIS a former Baja Fresh location? Because I'm from the west and we have loads of those out there. The rounded salsa bar, the checkered floor... even the tables look like a Baja Fresh just up and left and this place replaced it the next day. Anyway, it was pretty good. I'd still say Chipotle is better, but it was fresh and I especially loved all 4 salsa options in their serve-yourself salsa bar. Free chips as well and I'm a happy lady. I ordered an avocado tostada and an el cheapo burrito for a total of about $7 and enjoyed them both. They were both good and the avocado was a decent amount on the tostada. The husband had a chicken burrito and a fish taco (but wasn't as impressed as the Chicago Tribune). All for around $17. Moral of the story is that we'd go back... but since we live about 10 miles away, I doubt it will be on a regular basis. Enjoyed it though! read more

A couple weeks ago I went here with a friend. I ordered the fish taco (grilled) since my friend highly recomended it. I'm glad I listened because it was the first fish taco I ever had and definitley not the last. It was so tasty and a very refreshing meal with the cabbage, cucumbers and tomatoes in the taco. After recently having awesome soft tacos at Bien Trucha in Geneva, the young man and I craved more, so we tried Chicks 'n' Salsa this week-end. I guess i have to say...meh. Not terrible, but I was hoping for better. The steak taco was definitely lackluster; in fact, I'll tell you right now, don't even bother. The chorizo had much more going for it flavor-wise; would be nice hangover food. The highly-touted Baja fish taco was okay, but I guess I don't get what's so earth-shattering about it. Still, the fish and chorizo were the way to go among the tacos I tried. The "salsa bar" was weak. They gave us a couple of little cups of standard salsa when we placed our order; then we went to check out the salsa bar to the right of the counter. There's a big sign talking about tomato shortages due to bad weather in Florida (that was ages ago...). So we're down to one salsa (tomatillo), plus cilantro, lemons and limes. At least make some roasted jalapenos à la Taco Fresco or something. It really looked pathetic. We got there just in time, before a big rush of people came in for dinner. So clearly people like this place. It wasn't that it was bad, I just didn't think it was off the charts. I am a fan! The menu is not extensive, but everything they serve is delicious, and there are some healthy food options such as sweet potato, and grilled veggies. I love getting a 1/4 chicken with 2 sides - the aforementioned grilled veggies and sweet potato - all for about $7 with tax. The salsa bar is the best feature. Ask for chips as a side and make as many trips to the salsa bar as you want. Updated 2/5/18: Still a fan, although I have now found at least one thing on the menu that I can not recommend. The Tortilla Soup is not really tortilla soup at all. It is a water thin tomato water (not even juice) that has a couple of carrots and a few pieces of corn. What an imposter! So, I paid $2.99 for a 12 ounce bowl of what I believe is the run off juice from their pico de gallo which is always on the salsa bar. I can understand using the juice of the tomatoes for the soup - but really? Is tortilla soup as described? Water thin juice with a few pieces of carrots and corn? I am a soup person - can't get enough of soup, but I will never again order this imitation tortilla soup. What a shame! . read more

I finally tried Chicks 'n' Salsa after reading about it here for sometime. It's not that close to where I live or work, but I'm glad I went! I hadn't been here since it was a Baja Fresh, which I'd thought was a good concept but was kind of blah. Good variety of options on the menu and I had a really good lunch and will go back for sure. The place is clean and the service was good, especially for a counter service place. Fish taco was very good-fried tilapia I believe-and was so overstuffed, it became 2 tacos. Good mix of cabbage, pico, sauce and fish. I also had the cheese enchiladas, which were decent, rice and beans were good and they dressed it up well with a little cup of guac. Seeing photos of their nachos, they didn't do them justice. I saw several orders pass me by and they looked really good and larger than the photos depicted. While it doesn't have the homey feel of an neighborhood taqueria, CnS does produce a nice product. I'd put it a step above Chipotle and about on par with Baja Fresh. They use quality ingredients, prepare fresh salsas and offer a decent value. I ordered two baja fish tacos (one grilled, the other fried) and a shrimp taco. They are prepared to order, so there's little chance that your food will be room temp. when you dive in. Of the three tacos, I enjoyed the fried fish taco the most, though I might remove the cucumber next time. The shrimp taco was also good, though don't expect large shrimp here (these were between a nickel and quarter in size). The grilled fish taco was OK, but I think the crispiness in the batter makes the deep fried fish a better bet. The salsas were good, but a little toned down for the American palate, I'd say. Thankfully, I spied a bottle of El Yucateco green a few feed down (they also have cholula and tapatio if I remember correctly) so I could fire it up a little bit. I agree with the other reviewers who suggest somewhat larger plastic containers for the salsas. I suspect portion control is trumping eco-friendliness here. The chopped cilantro on the salsa bar is a nice touch that I don't often see. Overall - I was really pleased with my lunch and wish they had a location closer to my home. read more
