I haven't been to Chi'Lantro's in a while for a reason, however since downtown Austin's food truck is right outside the post office doors, it lured me into giving it another try. Sadly, I'm still not convinced for future returns. The meat marinades are sweet, the tofu is extremely dry and it would be nice to have the option of "soft" vs. cooked/fried tofu. Dropped by towards the end of a long weekend of "traditional" BBQ, in search of some good fusion tacos like I remembered on my previous visit. This time, I chose two tacos, chicken and tofu, and they were delicious. The Korean salad was very fresh, and the the tacos were fairly substantial in size and in filing ratio. The sauce was spicy and delicious as well. However, the star of the night was the pork kimchi fries that one of my fellow diners had. Wow, I have to admit, I had some doubts going in, but damn, these things were good. They were, at once, gooey and sinful, yet fresh and almost, dare I say it, "light" tasting. A very interesting, and very good, fusion dish. This place is worth looking up. It's been a while since I last updated this, but this place has become a frequent favorite of mine near campus when I crave mexican OR asian. I don't know why but the fusion craze finally hit me. Currently I'm all about the spicy pork quesadilla. It is packed with flavor and surprisingly filling. It is actually extra awesome on the days where they make it a bit on the greasier side. Sure, its heavy but man that extra grease goes a long way to making it taste that much more awesome. Normally I find myself getting that and splitting an order of kimchi fries (also spicy pork), which reminds me of carne asada fries I had in San Diego but better. That magic sauce really is magic. The only annoying thing nowadays is the guys lame card reader; the guy must have swiped my card 20 times before he got it to work. Sure its neat to see the little thing on the ipad or iphone, but a bit of haste/efficiency would be nice when your trailer lines are spilling close to the curb. read more

I dream of the Tofu Quesadilla. I first tried out Chilantro during sxsw, and was blown away. I was sceptical of coming back because I knew that this had to be a fluke, but I was so freaking happy when my buddy told me that these guys were now parked outside of our building. I couldn't resist and within minutes I was up at the window ording. The food comes out quick. No so quick that you believe it was just sitting there being pecked at by flies waiting for some sucker to eat it. But fast enough. The first bite is amazing. The tofu is marinated in some tasty sauce and cooked crispy. In every bite you get tofu covered in cheese. I had to pace myself and not devour it within seconds. This is one of those things that you have to savour. (even if for just 5 minutes) I would be happy enough with just the quesadilla, but the sauces you get for it are just as good! This is my favorite food truck. I don't know what they do to make this so good, but man is it. I am so lucky that I can walk to this place for dinner. This is a STRONG THREE. I have alot of mixed feeling for their kimchi fries.At one point, I thought the magic sauce, sriracha, kimchi, and beef blended well together. At one point, I thought they were just regular fries with some kimchi and sauces on top. It was worth trying out, but I wonder if Im just being too picky. I used "lunch drop" so I ordered my meal and it was delivered so that may be a factor. The price was a little high for quality & quantity you receive. I ordered a rice bowl paid for double portion of meat $3 upcharge. The bowl was small land really only a few pieces of meat. The rest of the bowl didn't have much flavor. I have been wanting to try Chi'lantro for quite some time. Fortunately they arranged to come to my place of work yesterday at lunchtime, and notice was sent out the day before. They were scheduled to come to our buildings in Austin from 11:15 to 1PM. GF and I arrived at 11:45 and there was a line of about 15, at no point between when we arrived on campus and left at 12:30 did the line shrink. It continued to grow and grow as time went on. We only waited about 15 minutes. They were operating like a well oiled machine. We ordered the Kim Chi fries (with no protein) to share. I had the Soy Glazed (gf) chicken burrito with extra sauce and cheese. It was delicious, but as expected with Korean BBQ, a tad on the sweet side for my taste. GF ordered the same protein in a bowl, but accidentally got the Short Rib instead (which made me happy because I wanted to try it). It too was delicious. I kind of wish I'd ordered the burger, and a quesadilla...ok, seriously, I just wanted to order everything on the menu and try it all. I was excited to try Chi'lantro because I've heard great things about the place, but to be honest I was a little disappointed. The place has a cool hip vibe (as you would think of Austin) with some awesome looking, but hard and uncomfortable chairs. I liked the ambiance and the feel of the place: everything was clean and the atmosphere felt fun. For food, I got the beef bulgogi bowl for $6.99 and also sampled some of my friends fries and kimchi fried rice balls. The bowl tasted like a lesser version of chipotle. I had to add two cases of the spicy sauce, and it still was not spicy or flavorful enough for me. The meat wasn't juicy, almost a beef jerky type texture. There was also barely any rice in the bowl. The fries were good, but nothing special with everyone else now a days making the same thing. The only thing that felt unique to me was the rice balls, they had a nice crunch with a subtle non overpowering flavor of kimchi. They balanced it well. After all that, I still left the restaurant not completely full. If I could give this place a 2.5 I would have. But I probably won't visit again. I'm craving chipotle now. So I ate a TON of Chi'lantro during SXSW... I swear they were everywhere, and I definitely was not complaining about it. What I tried: * Beef tacos - my favorite thing of theirs. Their beef has an amazing, Asian flare marinade and was extremely juicy. * Kimchi Fries - second fave. Not sure how much they usually are but I got them at Fader Fort for $9 which I thought was a little steep considering the portion size. It is filling though! Just wish I had not shared it. But my gosh they were so good! They have added more items to their menu since expanding from a food trunk to a brick and motor. They added rice bowls! The only thing I get is their kimchi fries. Everything else I have had such as their burgers, fried chicken, and bowls were bland to me. The decorations and design of the restaurant is trendy! If you can accept that finding these guys can be as elusive as finding true love, you just might enjoy reaching that pot of kimchi at journey's end. I got a Facebook tip that ChiLantro would be at the Domain Westin during lunch, and by golly, there they were, with a dozen people eagerly waiting in line. I will tell you I'm just not the biggest fan of trailer food, probably due to the flashbacks I have about my childhood with carnies, but that's another story. Since my favorite Yelpers rave about ChiLantro, I was looking forward to it, and when it was my turn to order, I kept remembering Yelp reviews saying the tacos were small -- so I ordered three of them with some pork kimchi fries. $11 flat. Well, hold your horses there, Nellie-Kim, because there's some mighty fine stuff hanging out in the petite section these days. I seriously had to stop eating after two tacos and half the fries, not just because I was full, but I'd pretty much lost my sense of taste -- a lot of spice and heat in the food here. That's not exactly a bad thing but sometimes, it can be a little too much for me. I'm not sure how the pork taco and remaining fries will hold up in the fridge, but I am sure the beef taco was a lot tastier than the chicken one. And if you love chili-cheese fries smothered in hot sauce, you may be tempted to elope with the kimchi fries here -- then again, you may not. Okay, let's end this: Three stars for the food. Another star for the cool people working the truck and their pricing structure with no coins. One more star for being one of the top five food trailers in Austin. But minus one star from me, because I hate standing outside waiting in line at a food trailer, and then having to figure out where I'm going to eat the stuff. Doesn't that come out to four stars? The marinated spicy sweet pork was topped with their special chi'lantro salsa, julienne lettuce in korean chili soy vinaigrette, cilantro, onions, roasted sesame seeds, and a lime. Chi'Lantro is hands down the best Korean taco joint. There have been many that have tried to follow, but all have fallen short. Just like how I need to drop by the Czech Stop in West, Texas, a trip to Austin wouldn't be complete without pigging out to some Chi'Lantro grub. They don't half ass it here by giving you a lot of fillers. The tacos are full of meat so much that you'll find it tough to keep everything from falling out. Their burgers are amazing as well as they add some awesome sauce that's probably fatty as hell, but what do you care when you just consumed a little too much alcohol? Top your meal off with a order of Kimchi Fries and you'll think you died and went to heaven. This is definitely the best hangover food you can get. The lines can get long since they are only open for a couple of hours at a time. During lunch you can usually spot one of the around the Domain area. They almost always have one around downtown for everyone else. Make sure to follow them on Twitter and/or Facebook so you know when and where they are going to be serving food. Their schedules can change unexpectedly (I learned the hard way) so this is an absolute must! I just hope and pray they find their way to the Dallas area. Austin has KBBQ?! Who knew? I thought this was still a west-coast trend, but it looks like Austin is just hip enough to have this Korexican fusion cuisine. This little roving cart was posted up at 2nd and Congress the other day, and had circled-up wagons with Kebabalicious and a coffee cart and posted up a nice little shade area with a table for "dining in." Our group of 4 cruised on over to satisfy our Ktaco fix, and satisfy it did. For $20, we got 4 tacos, 2 burritos, 2 woefully small sides of kimchi, and some assorted beverages. My meal was the spicy pork burrito which came with egg(?), marinated pork, a green cilantro rice and salsa wrapped in a flour tortilla. I had them add a side of gochujang and a side of kimchi. I was expecting to pay for an actual side of kimchi (at least banchan-sized portion) but instead got a small bit of kimchi that would have been adequate for adding to the burrito. The burrito was surprisingly good. I was trepidatious about the egg in there, but didn't ask them to hold it. I figured, when in Austin... so yeah, with the added gochujang, the burrito had that great Korexican blend of flavors, and the meat was much more marinated than most Korean taco carts I'm used to. Overall, a solid 4 star burrito. For a beverage, I scored a cooked rice drink that was sweet and tasty. They had a lot of great Asian drink options, so it was quite hard to choose. The only real disappointing thing about the meal was that the tacos were served in a Styrofoam box. Hailing from the coast, I'm not used to seeing these any more. In fact, Styrofoam is hard to find in Portland, Seattle, SF, etc... I guess I'm just not used to seeing it;. That shit destroys the earth, people.Why worry about an oil spill... that will go away, the Styrofoam will be here long after your children's children are dead. I work somewhere new now and they have food trucks almost daily. Chi'lantro was here today so I thought I would give them another chance. Still not impressed. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with garlic fries. The piece of chicken was huge! It stuck out at least an inch on each side of the bun. Unfortunately it was also flavorless. Panko breaded chicken with just no flavor. It had a schmear of magic sauce and some Korean pickles which boosted the flavor just a little bit. I will say the garlic fries were good, hence the 3 stars. They came with the magic sauce which added a nice kick. All in all, not a truck I will seek out. read more

Anytime we steal something from California, it ends up sucking hard (except you, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf!) by the time it gets to Austin like frozen yogurt, chicken and waffles, and Jesse James. Korean taco trucks have been popular in LA for some time, so I was suspect when they started popping up in Austin. One hazy, desperate night downtown I discovered myself at the front of the line at Chilantro, so I ordered and ate what ended up being ten really good tacos. Like any drunken one night (taco) stand, I didn't trust my judgment from the night before. I always noticed my coworkers going to the one Chilantro truck for lunch that conveniently parks itself near my workplace throughout the week. I thought to give it a try in the light of day. Meat? Check! Veggies? Check! Carbs? Check! Cheese? Check, if you're into putting cheese in your Mexican-Korean food (they also serve burgers, quesadillas, and burritos). I ate my words once again because the tacos were better than I remembered. When you get two tacos for $5, I think the prices are pretty good. Get the beef taco if you like your bulgogi a little sweeter, and get the pork taco if you like your bulgogi spicier. The tacos are greasy in all the right ways, but I didn't feel bogged down after finishing my meal. Their fries are a little soggier than I like, but the tacos are good enough to make me forget about them. I really love that Cilantro makes themselves available in different parts of town during the week (they have two peripatetic trucks).
