Very close to the Costco so we decided to stop in because chili sounded so gooood. Been around since 1946 which is really impressive! The spicy chili has a punch but it's pretty strong, not something I could have as a regular soup. The chili was more like a thick sauce and the spicyness made it more of that oily-base. The Messy Marc lives up to its name and I really liked the raw chopped onions here to cut the grease a bit. The bread is thick but nicely toasted. Glad I tried it, but may be something I try once. We ordered for takeout and the staff were still very friendly throughout the whole experience. They use compostable packaging so it's something you gotta eat right away!

When it's past 7:00pm on a Saturday night and you're at the "Burbank Moose Lodge," there aren't many options within walking distance for food. (FYI - They only have a bar here, no food unless it's a catered event) So, what do 2 foodies do? They look to "Yelp for Help!" Chili John's was open late and only a few blocks away. So, we called up, ordered our food then walked over to pick it up 15 minutes later...Snap! Claudine the owner, greeted us when we walked in. She was very friendly and made us feel welcomed. It looks like an old diner from the 1950's. Some thing you might find in films like "Back to the Future," or "American Graffiti." They have used it in several films including "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," by Quentin Tarantino. Not sure if you know this, but Chili John's has been around for over 50 years. Established in 1946 by Ernie Isaac, a family run diner famous for its "chili over spaghetti." Claudine purchased it from her uncle about 8 years ago. It has a U Shaped counter which makes it easy for the staff to take your order, chat with you and so on. Loved it! So, grab a stool at the counter and relive your childhood...It's fun! My chicken tender sandwich was very good except that it had barely any chicken on it. Only 2 very thin chicken strips. The sandwich was mostly bun, lettuce and tomato ~ I was a little disappointed. The chili fries and the chili on rice were good. Plenty of street parking (free - just read the signs) ~ and that's all I have to say about that ~ xo

Super old-school diner that looks like Biff Tannen might walk in at any moment to hit on your mom. Decor is frozen in time, along with the analog cash register that sits right in front of me with the big round buttons (just for show; they take card, of course). The seating is all bar style in the shape of a U. Parking is out back and on the street. Inside today, it's about 90 degrees and I didn't see any discernible HVAC system. Didn't want to stick around too long as I prefer not to melt while eating, so I just asked for my chili dog to go. Would've probably stayed if it were a cooler day. Beef chili dog - 7.5/10: Solid chili dog. Pretty sizeable and loaded with chili. Dog has a nice casing and accompanying snap to it. Not sure how their chili is prepared, but it's not your typical ground beef base. It's diced-up and shredded beef chunks that gives it a different texture that you would expect from a traditional chili. You can also adjust the amount of heat in the chili. I got it medium and it had loads of kick. Would probably come back if in the area, especially if it's a cooler day.

Have been here before, but seeing an LA in a Minute posted on X, I needed to drop by again. This is a great, old-school lunch counter that happens to serve great chili. Ordered the ULTIMATE CHILI DOG Bacon-wrapped dog, topped with chili, American cheese, chopped onions, mustard, spicy sweet pickles and Fritos combo which included fries and a drink. The food was great and the facility clean. We were treated right away, and service was a bit slower than normal due to training and computer hiccups. Once that was squared away, the staff was friendly and attentive. This is a place worth more visits.

FOOD I got the build your own chili with spicy beef over spaghetti. There was such a large pool of oil at the bottom that I couldn't finish it. It would be fine if I couldn't taste the oil, but I could in every bite. Especially since it didn't mix with the sour cream. The bowl looked small, but it's super filling. I also got the chili cheese fries and it did feel too oily at the end after the fries soaked up all the chili oil. The fries were so well fried though To note, this was the first time I've ever had chili so I don't know if this is a standard chili experience haha SERVICE One of the male servers was a bit grumpy. Chili John's didn't disappoint , its great American dive chili parlor and I love it. Flew into Burbank and needed a food fix so headed over for some chili & dog! Man this place doesn't looked to evolve since it opened. Nice horseshoe counter bar seating maybe 20 people at best. The punk rock element made me feel at home. A darling young lady greeted me and evacuated my order which was chili & rice with a side hotdog. Since I'm a huge chili & rice fan I was ecstatic to have it on a menu. My dog tasted great and yes I only have mustard only ( Dirty Harry style )! Wasn't a fan so much of bunch since it was a skinny dog but after stripping some extra breading off it tasted like a hot dog with mustard, DELICIOUS! Gotta give the counter girl some kudos. She was very attentive in my happiness and my meal. She even wanted to trade a chili John's baseball hat for my Louis Vuitton hat but that was a no deal... LOL Defiantly will stop in for another bowl and maybe a chili dog.... Ya I think I'll grab a chili dog for sure but that's another story. Make sure you tip heavy and enjoy your food & experience !

Soft opening for this new tap room and comfort food spot adjoining the world famous Chili John's! Same owners and real nice, local folks over seeing the drinks and food. Beer, wine and seltzers for now. Open Fri & Sat 4pm - midnight. The Taproom offers an elevated menu with options like charcuterie selections, burrata salad, seared salmon and desserts. Happily, I could still get a bowl of chicken chili - YUM! And Hubs went slightly fancy(for him, anyway), trying the grilled Gruyère w/bacon jam and grilled onions. To drink, we went with seltzers from nearby Brewyard Beer Company, brewed and canned in Glendale. My Calamansi was a refreshing lime and Hubs tried and enjoyed the mango. For now, the soft opening, there's intimate seating at the tap bar, 5 seats. 3 tables accommodate 4 people each. Outside are 4 tables of 4 seats. What I Ordered: -Chili Dog $12.50 -Spicy Beef Chili with Spaghetti(12 oz) $10.95 -Cheese and Sour Cream $1.50 -Dr Pepper $3.95 -The Weeny $6.59 Total $35.49 plus tax I was doing my Chili Dog tour of Burbank. This was my second stop of the day, as I had eaten at Larry's earlier in the morning. I came here a bit on the early side and was let inside early, which is always nice. I spoke with the owner, and he was very friendly and gave me the spiel about their history. He gave me some recommendations on what to order and what to drink. I opted for the Dr Pepper that they get exclusively from Texas with real cane sugar. He starts telling me about how he and his wife have a health food background and how they transformed the menu at Chili John's. That's where he lost me! I came here for unhealthy food, not healthy food. Some people want the healthy hot dogs and buns made with healthy oils and all that jazz. I guess I went in blind, not knowing about the healthy ingredients. I wouldn't have gone there had I known that. I like going to historical places that have been in business for a long time where they've been serving up dishes since they opened, but altering the original recipe with all healthy ingredients is not for me. I came here in March before the Times article came out. I hope this business can stay open and they can get more customers in through the door. I wish them all the success in the world. I wouldn't be back anytime soon. The Chili Dog was not bad, all things considered, but the one I had a Larry's was better. Perhaps it's not fair to compare one to the other when one is made with healthy ingredients. It is what it is. When in Rome, I tried the skyline type chili with the spaghetti and it was too oily. I seriously felt the heartburn coming on. I think they need to re-evaluate their menu and consider putting on some original menu items to give customers a variety of options. Something for everyone! It's also been featured in a few shows and movies such as Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood and Twin Peaks. Guy Fieri was here for Tripe D too! Honestly, I love Chili John's cool aesthetic, good stories and nice signage. I also appreciate the preservation of landmarks like this. The U-shaped counter really isn't something you see very often nowadays. But honestly, their menu selection does not include any good-tasting food. I hate to be harsh here, but this is my personal opinion.

Very old time quaint diner vibes. Kind of reminds me of the show Twin Peaks for some reason, maybe the fact that the restaurant is over 100 years old! The servers are friendly, the food is very good! Chocolate malts are bomb here and I HIGHLY recommend the chili cheeseburger!!! I don't even like burgers but this was phenomenal. Onion rings are good and house made ranch is so good and dilly. I went back and got the chili dog lunch special and it's also very good since I love a hot dog w casing. Warning the original spicy chili does have a kick and I do love spicy too, but I might shift to mild next time lol!

Best chili dog of all time award! This was the best all around chili dog. All of the ingredients just goes together so well, and everything about it was mouth watering. The bun was buttery, crispy and soft. A good bun is a must. The dog was snappy and flavor packed. The cheese was perfectly gooey. Finally, the chili was one of the best. It was beefy, thick, and delicious. This spot is so nostalgic, and has a long history. Sitting at the counter just makes me feel like a kid again. Love the owner, he was friendly and has a passion for great food.

Came here for lunch with the kiddos. We started off with handspun milkshakes and Mexican coke. So good! We love chili but we all eat it differently so it what nice we can eat it our own way. I got it over rice while the kids got it over fries and a hot dog. They don't seed oils so everything was delicious and fresh. Definitely coming back! read more

Chili John's in Burbank isn't quite Ben's Chili Bowl, but when you're craving chili spaghetti on the way to the airport, it really hits the spot. The diner ambiance is charming, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food comes out fast. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area! read more

Chili John's is like going back into the past. You feel like Marty McFly sitting at the counter. The staff is SO NiCE and friendly. They let us sample multiple chili flavors and provided excellent suggestions. I tried chili on spaghetti which sounds weird, but was actually delicious. Will try rice/beans with chili next time. You should definitely get a bottle of Dr. Pepper in the glass. Wow! It was the best Dr. Pepper I ever had. read more

Oh man I hate to negatively review an institution like Chili John's but the entire experience left a lot of be desired and ... a massive stomach ache. Firstly, there is mold on the top of the ceiling. Black mold at that. My stomach has been churning like butter since I ate here. The chili was mostly grease with some meat. The sloppy John was just grease, sincerely. If you want indigestion / a bad stomach this will do it. Such a shame cuz it's an establishment but the quality of food is not it. The service was remarkably slow as well. At this point it should be dialed in and it took 15/20 minutes to even order a drink. read more

Firstly, love Chili John's as a Burbank staple and establishment. But this is not the Chili John's you remember or know. The new owners are using the press to make us donate to their GoFundMe and are blaming people for not coming in, and now I know why. I went in to pick up an order to go, the service was truly terrible. You don't get acknowledged at all when coming in. Granted they were busy, but it was just one poor young girl trying her best out front while all the Duck Dynasty guys in the back just stay there with one guy just talking with customers instead of actually helping get food out. Took 10min for me to actually be acknowledged, I had to sit at the counter finally to get some attention. I ordered two chilis to go, that's it, she took my order, I paid, and then proceeded to wait another 15min. I was then told to stand up and wait since I was not eating in. Also the menu online on their site is outdated and incorrect. The one you see in the restaurant is missing a bunch of stuff they have listed on their site. The line for to-go orders was now piling up. Not once did anyone acknowledge the other customers, all waiting. There were 6 or 7 people behind me all huddled up by the entrance. Finally one of the women behind me belted out if anyone was going to help them. We were told to form a line, which we had. Guy behind me asked how long I've been waiting. I said it was around 20min now. He walked out. The two other women finally walked out. I would have walked out but I already paid. Reminder, it was 25min for just me. In that 25min, none of the 6 or 7 people behind me got their orders taken. FINALLY got my order, all it took was 20sec to scoop chili into a carry out container, but had to wait 25min in total. Got home, was missing some of the extra toppings I paid for like chopped onions. Chili was a pool of grease with no flavor whatsoever. Worse than dog food. I felt sick all night. Poor Chili John's. These owners don't deserve to run it and will be the ones known for ruining and crashing a true piece of Burbank history. You'll get better chili at Bob's Big Boy than here, and honestly Hormel's is better. It's the worst chili I've ever had, my wife just tossed hers out because she couldn't finish it due to how much grease there was. The place is falling apart too. I leaned on a wall and the siding just popped off. They truly ran it into the ground. If you read the articles about them struggling, just know it's their lazy attempt to guilt us into coming in when they have no desire to actually run a restaurant. There's a reason people stopped coming in. RIP, Chili John's. read more

I'm gonna go three stars just so they keep their stellar rating. I visited about a week ago and just got the fluids back in me to get enough energy to leave a review. I too had seen the reports of closure and not being able to survive, and the go fund me, so my friend and I decided we needed to visit before their immediate departure. I just came to echo what a previous reviewer said about a week ago. If this is the world famous chili that everyone raves about, we have a problem here! As I sat pending my demise and watching the staff run into each other, I once again said this can't be the place people say has the best chili! After a couple bites I figured out that it only has three ingredients. The first being allspice, the second being grease and the third I have no idea. You do realize we have refrigeration now and you can use other than spices to preserve your food for the cross country journey. If this is the world famous chili John's that we are trying to save here, it just might be time for you to hang up your chaps, take your go fund me, ride back on the chuck wagon and call it a day. As another said stock in Bob's chili spaghetti has gone through the roof! read more

Waited 20 min for the simplest to go order- 16 oz beef chili with beans, 16 oz chicken chili w beans... added 2 sodas bc of the wait time standing there. Was $45 and this is what we got, two sad tiny greasy paper cups with a sad amount of food. One is lacking filling and One doesn't even have the beans added. This place has gone down hill. Also they have a go fund me with 14K in it, you can tell not a dollar has been spent keeping up this place. If you like sitting on a stool with raw foam exposed, this place is for you! read more

The chili is pretty good. The ambience is cool and they very friendly. The lunch special leaves me hungry still. Quite small for $14 but the chips and drink they offer are good. Had Shirley temple soda drink which was 10/10. Overall a bit pricey for chili but solid food. Finally I give it 5 stars mainly because of one thing .... LEMON PIE. Astounding and worth every cent . Not gonna tell you it's better than the chili but it is amazing. Thanks! read more

Chili John's is about as special as it gets in Burbank. Always been owned by families over the years, who put their own mark on a brand that's over a century old. CJ's is the oldest restaurant in Burbank, and as the Irish say, it has that good craic, that good fun feeling in its bones. Not only that, but they're loyal in continuing the traditional Cincinnati Skyline style chili, while also expanding the menu in really fun & tasty ways. Plus they have beer now, and that is a big win for a local yokel like me, who can walk home. Seriously, take a break from where you normally go, and stop by for a bowl, you're definitely going to be coming back. They simply don't make em like this anymore, these places are rare, special, human, and the antidote to the mindless Chipotles, Tocayas, or some other huge chain owned by an investment firm. This place has CHARM that you only get when it's a mom & pop spot. read more

It's taken over 2 years, but the Taproom has finally opened. The food will be new menu items from a chef they're working with to rebrand as a speakeasy. Service should be ok since it opens after the restaurant closes. From the old reels on IG, ambiance looks like a typical beer bar rather than a speakeasy. Good luck, hope they make it to their 80th year and beyond! read more

Got there at opening 11am. Quickly seats filled up. Unfortunately Only one server, she was a sweetheart. Be patient. Take your time/relax and everything will be alright. I got the spicy beef chili & spaghetti ( it's spicy!) Next time I'll order the medium. My son got the kids mild chili spaghetti & beans with a Dr pepper (cane sugar glass bottle) The pineapple pie was killer as well as our icebox lemon pie to go. Lil Robert has been farting all day totally worth it! read more

The chili is excellent. Gotta admire an owner who can claim that the chili takes ~30 hours to perfect, using spices from a specialized supplier who has been in the chili game for over a hundred years. They make their own tallow, which emulsified the spices perfectly. Try the fries! This bowl is made from love and passion and it shows. Nothing fancy, but truly classic, timeless, and authentic. No preservatives and additives, just whole clean ingredients. It's worth the drive to Burbank. read more

I tried the 'sloppy john', billed as their version of a sloppy joe. My wife went for the Chili. Neither were very good. Mine had cheese, though I had specifically asked for no cheese when I noticed the cook preparing that dish for another customer. It had cheese, I had cheese, so I basically did not eat it. My wife had to request the condiments that come with the chilly as did several other customers. While the waitress appeared to be doing her best to handle the eight or ten people seated, she did not do very well at it. They do have a great selection of Root Beer, it certainly has that old classic vibe to it, indeed it even smells old in there. They have all the original equipment, like the clock from when the place was built. I won't be back here again. read more

I'm going to miss the original owner. I went back recently since he's passed and I don't know what kind of meat they're making the chili with but it's not ground beef and I found it stringy and dry, far too much chili powder is being used to have spice cover for it but you can tell the difference. That was my last visit. A pound of it just isn't worth $20 anymore. read more

Never ever seen food with so much grease all over my food and no flavor at all. Didn't taste like chili, I not even sure what kind of meat was in it but it didn't look normal. The wife was scared to eat hers. Before I was served that nasty stuff we ordered some chili spaghetti to take home for dinner. Should have waited after eating. That was 67 dollars total for everything. The next day we threw everything in the trash and both or stomach ached for 2 days. Health inspectors need to pay them a visit. Their delicious dogs are nitrate free, bread is spot on, which is a plus for me, they have really good chicken and beef chili, the best bread and butter pickles, fries, rings and bottled sodas. You think you know chili, that is until you come to Chili John's. My best suggestion is to let them know it's your first time there and see where things go. I don't think anything is a bad choice, just depends. Come for the chili, stay for the friendly atmosphere at the counter. I don't think this place has changed one bit since it opened. read more

Drove by this spot today and decided to give it a try. The ambiance made me feel at home. I LOVED the layout of the place, kinda like old school diner vibes. The customer service was great and they were very nice. Food came out fast and tasted delicious. I ended up getting 2 hotdogs but a few customers and staff told me they are known for their chilis hence the name (silly me ) I definitely plan on going back to try the chili bowls. A Burbank institution. But the chili quality is variable. One day it was pretty good. Another day, it was the dregs at the bottom of the barrel, had so much oil and the meat was of dubious quality. I would love to support them if the quality was a bit better and more consistent. read more

As always with my reviews I call them like I see them. Maybe it's Burbank, or what, the dogs are good but as little pricey in my eyes. Don't get me wrong, dogs are tasty. When It comes to their chili.. the milder one has a bit more flavor. The spicy chili is not spicy... it might be a little bit more capsaicin forward, but not spicy flavorful. I could probably come up with at least a half dozen ways to make it better, but this is a classic establishment. The service was good for an early Saturday, one young lady and another guy were running the place, very friendly. They were quick with their service. As for the ambiance, casual and low key... a basic greasy spoon location. It's cool to visit once for the novelty and experience. I have been coming to Chili John's about once every few years for most of my 50+ years, but only because my travels don't always bring me to this side of Burbank. I would visit more often if I lived closer. The vibe is original, with the aged mural a dominator in the cozy room with the horseshoe shaped counter. Super friendly staff, and you may run into the owners serving up their 100+ year old chili recipe. A nice choice of burgers, hot dogs or spaghetti topped with the chili that has kept this place known around the region. You can also just get a bowl of straight chili, just pick your heat. Overall it's always a great experience from the chunky chili to the owners stories, this is a fun lunch spot! read more

I hate to leave this review because the service in the past has been great. My brother recommended this place to me and I loved it. When I saw they might go out of business I wanted to support them. I called for a to go order and found out their business line is no longer in use. I came in still wishing to support the business and saw a full house seated eating. Awesome! What wasn't so awesome was that 2 other people were in front of me in line waiting to get served, and we waited quite a while. One of the staff comes up and says, "Thanks for your patience. Just to let you know, we are running out of supplies and to-go containers and will be with you shortly." We waited another few minutes. I left and one of the other customers left shortly after me. This business needs all the help they can get, but sadly it seems they're too overwhelmed to make it happen. Best of luck guys. read more

Poor management: After checking the hours ahead of time, I drove 30 minutes to Chili John's. The owner came out and told me that he decided to close 3 hours early. I went back the next day and walked into an empty restaurant. An exasperated employee told me that she was unable to run things. She said that she expected others to help her but she was alone for the day. A family then came in and the employee told them the same thing. They promptly left. I offered to help the employee. On the verge of tears, she said that she will just close early. She elaborated that she was overwhelmed and could not manage this place on her own. We decided to try this place because I saw an article about historic eateries around LA. They also have a 4 on Yelp. First impression was it has a cute retro feel... as I looked around the place is filthy and super hot inside. It was hard to find a spot to sit because the dishes from previous customers had not been cleared yet. We found a clean spot and ordered a milkshake...I was told it would take about 8 min to make our 2 shakes. The shake mixer has something ( crumbs???) around the base of it. Their chili recipe is supposedly a 100 year old recipe... I decided to try the Chili spaghetti bowl lunch special. My husband got the open faced chili burger. The chili was the worst, unflavorful chili I have ever had. I took a couple bites and saw 1/8th of my bowl was pure grease. I couldn't eat anymore after that. My husband did finish his ( I was surprised). There was self serve peppers on the counter and olive oil... I looked closely at the olive oil and there was something growing inside it ( made me want to ). The gentleman waiting on us was very nice, but really needed to take time cleaning his work space. Every couple of years or so, social media is bombarded by the announcement that Chili John's is at risk of closing. Locals and foodies everywhere flock to show their support and keep this local staple in their community. I happen to be one of those yuppies and decided to stop by this past week. This wasn't my first time here and I do love it for its old charm and decent chili. This time it was quite different because everyone seemed to show up on the same weekday and time. To top it all off someone had rented the space for a company lunch and a lot of people were turned away even after sitting down and ordering. Instead they were given the option to take it to go. Before the announcement that Chili John's was rented out for lunch, It took nearly 20+ minutes to order and 30+ minutes to actually receive your order. Don't ask me how long it took to ask for the bill. The food itself is decent, but not the best. After they took my chili fries basket away the counter was covered with grease, which no one had the time to clean up. I'm not usually picky when it comes to this but it was an excessive amount of orange grease that got on my arms and phone Despite this ordeal, I wouldn't mind coming here again and ordering The Hollywood (a hot dog with sweet pickles) and their extra greasy chili fries. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they couldn't handle the excessive demand, but some things could have been handled more professionally. Also to the company who rented the space out for your corporate lunch or whatever, take it to go next time. A lot of people were turned away because of you guys and it put the owners and employees in a visually uncomfortable position. read more

Los Angeles is a chili town. It seems weird but it's true. Chili John's is a true throwback. But it's not a fake 50s diner that some interior designer slapped together. It's the real deal: a tiny diner about 70 years old with maybe 30 counter stools and no tables. It's like stepping back in time...but for real. So, yes, they've got a bunch of different hot dogs and burgers for sale and the burgers are outrageously good. But chili is in the name so it better be good. In fact, it better be great. And it is. Get yourself a giant bowl of chili with cheese, onions, sour cream and crackers. They've got spicy chili, if you want it, and it's not nuclear hot but it'll put some serious sweat on your brow. If your stomach can hack it, get yourself some chili cheese fries. They are very generous with the chili. Or get your hot dog or burger with chili. Of course, you need to finish it all off with a slice of lemon pie which they gently push here. Why are you getting pie? Because when you walked in, you stepped back in time so, yes, for sure, you'll have that big bowl of chili followed by some very good and not too sweet, lemon pie. No one heard of cholesterol in 1946. Friendly, fast service. They are popular and can get very busy. Remember, they are very small. Plenty of free street parking all around. read more

There are a couple of tables outside, and sometimes they'll also open up their indoor seats. Service can be busy when they're busy but I've never waited more than 10 minutes to get my food.

The clam chowder bowl was flavorful and had the perfect amount of creaminess. Service was excellent! The server came to check in on us and made sure our tables were clear of any finished plates. There is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors at the restaurant!

Dear any1 who's looking for good chili, My name is Alec Loguercio and my father has owned chili john's for a little over 17 years of it's 61 years of business. During that time we've comes to find the finer points and tricks of chili. Things that are good to know when ordering a bowl. They can change a bowl from the best meal you've ever had to a culinary disaster that never got a chance to fill your soul with it's greasy inspiration. Here are some of the finer points that you might want to consider when ordering. Always ask to try the chili if you've never had any. We'll be more then happy to let you try all the types of chili we have (beef, chicken, vegetarian, hot dog chili). the chili will be the hottest the chili will get(unless you put some hot sauce on it which we provide, bringing your own is another good idea if you'd like), so by sampling the chili you've also found out if you can handle a hot bowl of chili or if you'd prefer a medium or mild bowl. a lot of people who have written reviews for the restaurant say that the chili is very greasy which is an understatement, but if you ask us to make the chili "dry"---(very important) we'll make sure to cut back on the grease. If you would like your chili in the more stereotypical form, we can add more bean juice to it. It will give the bowl a more soupy starchy flavor more associated with chili, it also helps cut the grease a little. Also asking for bean juice added to your bowl of chili and spaghetti can make it tasted better. A lot of regular customers ask for it like that. sounds weird but tastes great. Currently my favorite bowl of chili is a 50/50 mix of chicken and beef chili on spaghetti and beans (extra bean juice) with sour cream and cheese with a bit of apple cider vinegar and tons of onions. after I discovered that combination it's all I eat now. We're mainly a lunch restaurant and we have a large lunch rush from 12:00 to 2:30. If you'd rather eat in a quiter enviroment any time before or after that time is a good bet. Mon-fri 11:00-7:00 sat 11:00-4:00 sun closed I hope these tips help you find the best bowl of chili for your tastes! Don't forget it never hurts to ask us for anything. I'm in Burbank for 2 days/nights business. Usually when I visit an unfamiliar city on business (not so much with the fam), I like to see if there are any DDD-reviewed locales nearby. As fate would have it, this was the closest, and since I wasn't terribly hungry, some Texas-style chili sounded right up my alley!I drove 6 mins (from the Burbank Marriott) over to Chili John's and was disappointed to see that it closed at 7p (it was around 7:20p when I pulled up--who closes at 7p?).I parked and walked up to take a pic (for all my Facebook friends, lol) and noticed the front door was left ajar. I saw a dude behind the counter wave me in, so I went through the door and asked "who closes a restaurant at 7p?". The guy asked if I wanted some to go and I said, "Sure!". In any event, he dishes me up a regular bowl of the spicy Texas style, along with some oyster crackers, chopped onions, and banana peppers to go. I over-tipped him and headed back to the hotel to chow down.I consider myself a bit of a chili afficionado. Back in DC, it was always Hard Times Chili (preferred location--Old Towne, of course, even though I lived out in Lowes Island and for many years, there was one in Reston), and this place absolutely rocks it!This was the best chili I've ever had, and of course, the way the dude did me right, it's aces for service as well. I may go back there again for din-din tomorrow night, but will be sure to get there before 7p. read more

we have been coming to CJ's for 20 years. The Aunties were like family, they greeted everyone, newbie or regular, chatted u folks, served fine bowls, and sent us home full and happy. something awful happened when the business was sold. First, the recipe was changed ("seed oils!" the new owner cried), so instead of just, it's a layer of oil. about 3/4 inch thick. we heard business was down. Twice we have gone in. the first time, 30 minutes - timed - and no one came to take an order. even though the owner was there. last time was last week. one of us stepped in to get to go. the owner was busy howling a woman about his wrestling prowess with pros. quite an entertaining story. he never once asked if I needed anything. he never once acknowledged a new customer in his place. finally, a young lady from the kitchen took my order. I waited 18 minutes for 2 bowls of chili to go. I paid nearly $40.00 the owner never lifted a finger nor acknowledged that someone was investing in his dying business. I got home - 1/3 of the chili was grease. not jus. grease. maybe it's time for you to go, if you refuse to even acknowledge your customers after crying all over social media about no one comes anymore. Absolutely the best Chili around. Its a counter style restaurant, that's it...from the 1950's. The recipe has never changed and its as simple as that. I have been going there for 25 years and everything is the same. Be ready for a very informal ordering procedure that's a little slow and takes some getting used to. Its family owned and run and always has been. The pies by the slice are fab...only 2 kinds: lemon to pineapple ; both are great. Chili with beans, or over a hot dog, or over spaghetti. For non-mean eaters they have vegetarian and chicken chili, too and it tastes great...you won't be disappointed. Chili w/ pie and a drink will run about $15. You'll get addicted! read more

ive been going here with my family for about 4 years off and on. the place itself is a throwback but in a good way--the counter, the wall mural, the seats, the kettles. the owners are real chatty and like to get to know their customers. i love the spaghetti with chili (spicy). the lemon pie is a sweet way to brighten your mood after having a spicy chili. they have little crackers and jalopenos if you are so inclined. it is a bit pricey but still ok. they do close early on week evenings something like 7 pm. the place has been around for decades..can be traced to be over 100 years old, i think. read more

It's been a while since I had my last chili fix here. It's still the same... spicy hot and tasty. And, that's what's kept the place in business for more than five decades. Other restaurants claim to know chili. But, Chili John's means it. Sure, there's a little greasy film with your serving. So what...you don't come here to protect your arteries. Nothing fancy here...just a u-shaped counter. And friendly, fast service. My foodie friend and I both sampled the vegetarian chili...forget it. It ain't chili without the beef. read more

Beef chili is the best in Los Angeles. I have tried it at least in 4 places. Also tried chicken, which is good, but not as the beef. The place itself making you think that you are in 1930-40s, and every time the door opens you expect someone to come in from that historical period). Service is ok- it differs from server to server. I'm from the south, and I loves me a good hot bowl of chili! My drummer brought me in here right after rehearsal one afternoon, and I got the hot beef chili atop of spaghetti. It was the best thing I'd had in a long time. The wait staff are busy, so you have to give them a minute. But their refreshing, non kiss-ass attitude, reminded me of home. I had fun. Not only are the hot dogs extremely cheap, they are really delicious too. It is of course just a simple hot dog, but with different spreadings that all matches so lovely. You pick, buy and get it in one minute, and then you can choose to eat it, standing in the window, with a view of broadway. What makes this place one of my favorite and a sure bet to recommend to my friends is the classic 1950's theme that has survived all the generations that have passed it. It's what a diner should be and thanks to the classic foods and beverages, it takes you back in time. Their top seller during my visit was the Texas Style Chili which actually gives you options of beef, chicken or 100% veggie. read more

My cousin introduced me to this place a couple of months ago and I have been back several times since then. Of course I really like chili, and I thought I liked it as spicy as possible, but learned a lesson in humility at Chili John's (I now prefer it mediumly spicy!). This place has been around forever and has the best classic chili around. Love it as hot as possible. Found out tonight the owner is no longer with us -- it is being run by his wife and kids.
