Your protein.. and your toppings. I got beans, beef, cheese and onions. My friend got beef, onions, peppers, cheese. Mmmmmm. Medium heat. The grease is real! And we loved every bite of it. Not a fan of the upcharge for the small portions of cheese and sour cream, but you must have one or the other! So plan on the small charge to make it right. Bottle sodas only. I have been considering this place for years. But as a non red meat eater I wasn't sure that they would have a chili for me. Today a friend posted a picture of a hot dog that looked great and we were close by so we decided to stop by. Well when I walked in and looked at the place...I instantly changed my mind about ordering anything. First of all none of the staff had masks on. Meh. I'm not worried about getting Covid from food. But it was weird that they require guests to be masked, and I'm pretty sure they're still required indoors in LA County right? Beyond that, the place just looks pretty old and rundown. I can imagine that has a charm for some people but it turned me off. My husband is a stay the course kind of guy. So I still got his regular chili over rice. The portion was pretty small for the price. It's 12 oz of chili but they don't fill the container and half of it is rice. But it costs $10 for that. We went here because we were always curious about this place driving by and would see Chili John's as a suggested place to eat in Burbank. Food reviewers Anthony Bourdain and Guy Fieri has stopped by and they were fans supposedly. First impression was: "Wow. This place needs Air Conditioning. There seemed to be no windows. We came on a HOT day and soon as you walk in, the place was really stuffy. There was loud rock music which was cool but we were almost about to leave because the temperature in there was way too hot and the music also made us irritated. The place did look a bit run down which is the atmosphere but the Diner chairs were ripped at the cushions, most of them were. And I guess there were other workers because you hear chatter behind the flapping doors to enter the back kitchen which we can't see who is there or how they are preparing the foods by the way. We were helped out and the lady assisting me offered a sample of their quinoa vegetarian chili option and I appreciated that. It was okay but thought to better opt for chili as it seems they are famous for their chili right? We decided to both order Chili Cheese Fries because we like Chili Fries. Be aware that we like Spicy food and the "Medium spice " was definitely not Medium in our opinion. It was also really big and greasy. We regretted ordering and we only ate some forkfuls and just left it alone. If you are a BIG chili fan and are used to eating BIG HEAVY GREASY PORTIONS then you may have no issues with this place. The facade is charming if you like vintage hamburger/hot dog joints. I have passed Chili John's on Burbank Blvd. more times than I can count and always said to myself, One day, I'm going to try it. I finally did. I enjoyed the tunes playing, but they were loud (a notch or two) for the square footage. It was hot inside. No a/c. Loved the horseshoe shaped counter. Customer service wasn't overly friendly, but the woman who gave me my to-go order and checked me out was pleasant enough. The chili cheese fries were super greasy. The amount of grease in the container was unsettling, but whatever, it was an order of chili cheese fries, not a salad. The cheese was obliterated during the melting process on the fries. That was disappointing. The chili was a dry style chili. Not wet at all. The ground beef had a lot of chili powder on it. It was spicy, but I like spicy, so it wasn't an issue. These wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but I didn't dislike them. The classic American burger was good. Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard and onions. I asked for the ketchup to be left off. I wish the burger had had pickles on it. Personal preference though. The burger patty was cooked fine. The bun was fresh and held up to the size of the patty and the toppings. The lemon icebox pie was my favorite over the pineapple cream pie. I wish the lemon icebox pie had had a slightly, thicker layer of lemon. The pineapple cream pie was more grainy. The whipped cream was separated possibly from pineapple juice. The pineapple layer was mainly a can of crushed pineapple. Both vintage desserts had graham cracker crusts. They have crushed iced for sodas. I got 2 bottles of root beer out of the cooler and asked for ice cups. I was excited when I saw they had crushed ice. I hate to leave this review because the service in the past has been great. My brother recommended this place to me and I loved it. When I saw they might go out of business I wanted to support them. I called for a to go order and found out their business line is no longer in use. I came in still wishing to support the business and saw a full house seated eating. Awesome! What wasn't so awesome was that 2 other people were in front of me in line waiting to get served, and we waited quite a while. One of the staff comes up and says, "Thanks for your patience. Just to let you know, we are running out of supplies and to-go containers and will be with you shortly." We waited another few minutes. I left and one of the other customers left shortly after me. Poor management: After checking the hours ahead of time, I drove 30 minutes to Chili John's. The owner came out and told me that he decided to close 3 hours early. I went back the next day and walked into an empty restaurant. An exasperated employee told me that she was unable to run things. She said that she expected others to help her but she was alone for the day. A family then came in and the employee told them the same thing. They promptly left. I offered to help the employee. On the verge of tears, she said that she will just close early. She elaborated that she was overwhelmed and could not manage this place on her own. We decided to try this place because I saw an article about historic eateries around LA. They also have a 4 on Yelp. First impression was it has a cute retro feel... as I looked around the place is filthy and super hot inside. It was hard to find a spot to sit because the dishes from previous customers had not been cleared yet. We found a clean spot and ordered a milkshake...I was told it would take about 8 min to make our 2 shakes. The shake mixer has something ( crumbs???) around the base of it. Their chili recipe is supposedly a 100 year old recipe... I decided to try the Chili spaghetti bowl lunch special. My husband got the open faced chili burger. The chili was the worst, unflavorful chili I have ever had. I took a couple bites and saw 1/8th of my bowl was pure grease. I couldn't eat anymore after that. My husband did finish his ( I was surprised). There was self serve peppers on the counter and olive oil... I looked closely at the olive oil and there was something growing inside it ( made me want to ). The gentleman waiting on us was very nice, but really needed to take time cleaning his work space. I've wanted to come here for a long time. I love going to the restaurants around LA (Burbank in this case) that have been around a long time. This place is dripping with nostalgia even though I haven't been. I've seen it featured in posts, lists, and food shows. So this past weekend, I just made it a point to drive out and finally try it. The parking lot in the back is tiny but you could easily find nearby street parking. For reference, I came here on a Saturday a little around 6pm. When you walk in , it feels like an old timey place in a very good way. I just walked over and sat down at a u-shaped counter and grabbed a menu. A very friendly woman came by to take my order. I ordered the regular sized (12 oz bowl) original beef chili and got the spaghetti and beans as my base in a frivolous attempt to cut back on some carbs, haha. But I think I've grown to like the bean more as of late. Anyhow, I also ordered onions and cheese for toppings. I told the young lady I was going to order the lemon pie but prob save on bringing it out til a bit later. The chili was tasty and was not spicy although there were things available if you wanted to kick it up a bit. The lemon pies was amazing. Almost like a fluffier key lime pie. Between the bowl and the pie I was pretty filled up and including tax/ tip, this meal was really reasonable. A huge plus in my book! Would love to come back and try the chili fries or a chili dog but definitely left satisfied with the meal and that I got to finally check that box of having come here. read more

Every couple of years or so, social media is bombarded by the announcement that Chili John's is at risk of closing. Locals and foodies everywhere flock to show their support and keep this local staple in their community. I happen to be one of those yuppies and decided to stop by this past week. This wasn't my first time here and I do love it for its old charm and decent chili. This time it was quite different because everyone seemed to show up on the same weekday and time. To top it all off someone had rented the space for a company lunch and a lot of people were turned away even after sitting down and ordering. Instead they were given the option to take it to go. Before the announcement that Chili John's was rented out for lunch, It took nearly 20+ minutes to order and 30+ minutes to actually receive your order. Don't ask me how long it took to ask for the bill. The food itself is decent, but not the best. After they took my chili fries basket away the counter was covered with grease, which no one had the time to clean up. I'm not usually picky when it comes to this but it was an excessive amount of orange grease that got on my arms and phone Despite this ordeal, I wouldn't mind coming here again and ordering The Hollywood (a hot dog with sweet pickles) and their extra greasy chili fries. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they couldn't handle the excessive demand, but some things could have been handled more professionally. Also to the company who rented the space out for your corporate lunch or whatever, take it to go next time. I didn't want to do this, but Yelp kept giving me notifications that won't go away. (I'm sure you can understand since you're on your phones every time every time a customer comes in.) Here's my review: I came in expecting a heaping cafeteria plate full of spaghetti (with optional beans) spread with a hearty yet gently spiced suet-drenched chili that covers everything.. generously topped with fresh shredded cheese, chopped onions, and plenty of oyster crackers to temper the grease. Just like they did it in the good old days, right? Riiight? Nope. Fuck you. You're getting a standard 12oz cardboard yogurt container with a plastic lid. (We are being environmentally conscious as you know) Oh, did you want cheese or sour cream? That's available in 2oz plastic cups for only $1.25 extra per serving! Ok, here's that simple bowl of chili you were looking for, that will be $13.50. It's failing on the food, it's failing on the nostalgia, it's failing on the service and it's failing on the atmosphere. You know this place was founded in the depression era, right? It's supposed to be a greasy spoon where anyone could get a hearty meal for a reasonable price. I can't knock the chili though, it's still delicious. Chili John's is pure gold. When people think of classic Americana eateries (often imitated badly by chains and the like) they think of a place like this. Managing to be simple (that's not derogatory - and please don't ever change!) and yet still having everything you could need in a Chili spot, this is somewhere I absolutely love to take people to eat whether it's a casual lunch meeting (like my most recent visit) or to wow a visitor, Chili John's never fails. It's an institution. However you like it, they probably do it - with a choice of beef (spicy or mild), chicken, or vegetarian. The taste is superb and the little shiny oil pool caressing the chili is *chef's kiss*. Authentic through and through. The staff are always great and the service is relaxed and friendly but efficient - never slow and never rushed. You are made to feel welcome. I have never had the pie before but on my most recent visit I was persuaded to try a slice of the Pineapple as the server had made it herself - apparently the first time she'd been given the chance. She nailed it. I love Chili John's and after driving by it many times over the years, I'm so glad it's now on my list of LA favorites. Friends at the studios swear by it - some grew up in the area and have been eating there since they were in school. Burbank's oldest continuously operating restaurant calls itself "iconic" and it genuinely is. Also, it's worth saying that even though this place looks "rough around the edges," "well loved" or "lived in," Chili John's is CLEAN! If the staff aren't serving, they're cleaning something. Everyone there takes great pride in what they are doing. Give me half a reason to and I'll gladly take a 30-45 minute drive from my neighborhood for a bowl of their chili any day of the week. read more

Chili John's is like Johnny's Pastrami, Tito's, Phillippe's, Tommy's and Cantors Deli - places you should go if for no other reason than you should say you've been. We read online that they were in danger of closing to lack of business so we thought we'd make a run up there and give them some support. We arrived at 12noon on Tuesday and they were packed. Standing room only. We waited about 5 minutes and one seat opened at the counter and the woman in front of us sat down saying that she'd be quick to place a To-Go order. 6 minutes later two seats opened at the end of the counter so we sat down. 5 minutes later we'd not been addressed or even given a menu and we noticed the lady who was there before us was just given a menu. They were slammed and were, as the term goes "in the weeds." When they got to us we ordered two bowls of Chili with Sour Cream, Cheese and onions. They put our order into their portable machines and then left. Long story short, 11 minutes later the waiter came back, extracted our orders from the hot tureens that are literally right there in the center isle and served us. The chili was OK - but it was warm, not not. Right out of the tureen and just warm. We were almost done when they came from the kitchen with the cheese, sour cream and onions in little cups. I will not say that the people in charge don't know how to run a restaurant, because that would be unfair. HOWEVER it could not be more clear that the three people working the front do not know how to work a lunch counter. You take a soup order, you turn around and serve it right then When you are only open from 11-3 you have 75 cups each of onions, cheese and sour cream prepped and in the cooler before you open. You use the nozzle brush to clean the beer tap before opening, too. And you NEVER walk from the counter back to the kitchen without taking something with you. A dirty something an empty of something ... you never make an empty trip. In their defense, if they have been serving 8 people an hour since Covid they may have lost experienced staff and were trying to rebuild, but it just didn't look like the people running understood the proper work flow. We'll try one more time in a month. And when we left - the lady before us was still waiting for her order. read more

Chili tasted dry, is that even a term that describes chili? Was my top spot I wanted to try in Burbank and sadly was my least favorite. I have been curious about this place for a long time. It seems to have been here forever and I have passed it a million times. Every time I drove by, I would think to myself "next time". Yesterday, a friend of mine posted it on his Instagram and it looked great so I figured why not. We entered the wrong door to start with. The bar had a really retro vibe, but no A/C. Then we went into the Taproom (correct door) which is very bare bones. No frills, spartan, but I am not too into decor. There are mixed reviews from both my wife and I. I have to say that we were both confused because we were told that they didn't have the ingredients for the Broadway or John the Ripper street dog. There was never clarification on what ingredients they didn't have or why my wife couldn't substitute a bacon wrapped dog, moving on. My wife ended up ordering "The Weeny", which is a plain hot dog with ketchup and mustard. She got it without mustard. But she really wanted a bacon-wrapped dog and they would not allow her to substitute the dog. She also ordered the Chili Cheese Fries with beef chili (not spicy). She felt there was not enough cheese on her fries, and she felt like the chili was a bit too dry for her taste. As for me, I had the build-your-own bowl with spicy beef chili, beans, spaghetti, sour cream and cheese. I also went with an order of spicy beef chili and cheese fries. I really enjoyed the heat from both of my dishes. It was good to be able to order something spicy and actually have it be spicy. I will be back to try the Ultimate Chili dog or John the Ripper. If you're in a rush do not come here. Didn't get my order taken for at least 10 mins. She didn't bring me my water until after my food, which I waited 30 mins. I ordered a chicken sandwich and chili fries. Chicken sandwich was okay, but then chili fries, I was certain I'd die afterwards so I stopped eating them. There is a "now hiring" sign outside so I understand the lack of service but at this point the cook needs to step in and help out the waitress. There was no team work what so ever I could have left without paying and she wouldn't have noticed I was gone. They seriously need help here. It has been nearly 10 years since I have been here, but if you haven't been you should go, if nothing more than for the fact that it is a 79 year old institution in Burbank. The server was fantastic, the atmosphere still retro and the chili still good. A 12 oz bowl is $10.95 and comes with multiple protein options--original beef (spicy), mild beef, chicken, turkey and veggie. I was expecting hamburger beef chili which this is not (the beef is shredded). It is thick also (made with beef tallow) and served in a ceramic bowl. While not the absolute favorite chili I have had in my life (I prefer the hamburger beef texture and a little less thick/dense), it was still very good. I also love that they offer other old school bottled drinks like Grape Crush and 7-Up, Fanta and Coke in a bottle. The only thing I would tweak about the place, that would not significantly affect the retro diner atmosphere is to repaint the interior walls. The age is beginning to show to the point that it doesn't feel as clean as perhaps it should in a post-pandemic world. Again, if you like chili, you should run, not walk to Chili John's! read more

Was in my original home, the valley, so thought I'd try Chili Johns, given historical importance. Was there at 4:30 pm (opens at 4). It was a 100 deg day. The front doors were wide open, mo on in the place. I asked if they were open, and a woman poked her head out from the back, said yeah, and disappeared back there. I sat for about 3 mins inside where I'm sure it was in the 90's inside, and left. Can't eat chili in a nonairconditioned place zero stars...the reviews lowest it takes is 1 star. read more

I drove by with the family on a Friday night and the place look empty as we looked in the window. I told my kids this is a Burbank staple and we should support small business and try it. I have been here many years ago and it was really good. Upon walking in there was no staff at all or customers. After a few minutes we heard a dog bark near the kitchen area, a guy walks out and his vibe was not welcoming at all. He was a "rocker" type of guy and he did not say hi or how can I help you. He could have asked us if we had any questions on the menu. The guy looked annoyed that we were there I immediately lost my appetite based on his vibe. With nobody else in the restaurant, it felt very uncomfortable. I wanted to walk out, but my wife really wanted to order something so we got it to go. The chili was not bad but the level of unwelcoming behavior made me have a bad taste in my mouth. My daughters were not impressed with his vibe. He should have been happy that he had 4 customers. Maybe the guy (maybe he was the owner) was having a bad day and wasn't in the mood to deal with people and I can forgive him for that. The reality is this was a Friday night. This place should have been packed! This is a Burbank staple. Are they Marketing this place? Maybe run a special where kids can get a free bowl of chili and get people into the place. Im so sorry but this used to be my favorite chili....back in around 1995 to about 2007. The recipe no matter what anybody representing this restaurant is saying....has changed. I don't know if it's to save costs or what. It's way too oily or greasy. It's now inedible. I came home using the toilet twice already. The so called lemon pie is great except for one thing.... the layer of lemon in about 1/4 of an inch, while whipped cream is 4 inches on top of that. I guess the lemons are real expensive? I don't get it. All the seats have holes and are ripped in the seats, and the only improvement seems to be a new modification on the owners truck. Not a fucking dime seems to be improvement of the restaurant. But this has been a long inexorable decline since that original family ran things. To their credit, they do finally sell beer. Last note: they love to give away bottled drinks to vendors, which takes what little money away that this hell hole makes in an hour. It's just ridiculous! read more

Historic experience. It was cool to be a part of it- Legend has it Walt Disney used to eat here! Nostalgic decor and well decorated. I got the Chili dog with the spicy chili. My son got some amazing chicken tenders too. The assortment of retro sodas was incredible! All the food was so nicely prepared and well seasoned. the waiter (i think his name was Matthew) was also wonderful, welcoming, and personable. This place is really a jewel. I sit down, and Tom Waits starts playing on the sound system. There's a ragged old LAPD vehicle painted gray that some Batman fan has adorned with Batman logos and a Wayne Enterprises license plate frame like it's a poor man's Batmobile. The place became packed moments after I'd ordered. I'm not a chili fanatic, but this chili was something new to me, and I loved it. With cheese and onions, it was hard for me to eat and moan in pleasure at the same time without bothering people. I really enjoyed my experience here. It totally gives off the nostalgia vibe of an old luncheonette....that was before my time and I only know as a history lover. The food is basic, gooey, and oh so good. There was only one counter person, and she was quite friendly. Ot may take awhile to order as she is quite sociable (not really a bad thing) , but to receive a chili bowl is instantaneous. I ordered the lunch special of chili spaghetti, chips, and a bottle of soda for $12. Overall, a really good deal. The bowl of chili spaghetti is deceptively filling. I walked away quite satisfied, and would highly recommend for a quick and hearty lunch. A strong 3. Very disappointed. Chili had no taste. Not sure if new owner tasting his food. Thought since ai ordered mild that was shy, but my boyfriend ordered spicy and was same no taste. Needed salt. Wanted cheese & onions, didn't come with dish, came in mini dipping sauce dish, very small amount. Service very slow and new staff.
