Visiting Charlotte on holidays and trying to make up your mind where to eat can be mind boggling, but this Saturday night we chose Chima Steak House in downtown Charlotte and what a great choice it happen to be. We made reservation for 7:00 pm and arrived at restaurant while it was raining, but they happen to have curbside vallet so unloading guest was quick and no one got wet. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated almost immediately. Our waitress Natalia arrived shortly after after being seated and explained menu and helped pick out an excelent wine for dinner and explained our options. We opted for the full salad bar and parade of meat that followed. Place was very clean and decor was modern and sophisticated. Hats off for Natalia for great service and staff that was constantly making sure we were having a great experience. Half way into our meal even the manager called Rick (Ricardo) approached table to say hello and make sure all was well and also helping retrieve cellular phone car when checking at vallet making it possible to take pictures and write this review. I dined at this restaurant last night with some co workers while visiting for a work trip. Overall the experience was good. The food was good but it seemed that all the steaks tasted relatively similar. If you like the Brazilian style steakhouse then you are usually looking for a variety. The rib meat was over cooked unfortunately and some things didn't quite live up to the pricing. I ordered an old fashioned but received a Manhattan. Unfortunately it wasn't amazing. Yesterday my brother's girlfriend and her mom, who was visiting from out of town (both are Black, African American), wanted to treat all my siblings and I to a nice steak dinner. I was so excited to try Chima in Uptown Charlotte because I have heard the food is so good; however, our night was turned around by the awful wait staff, specifically the white male manager, Doug. Here's what happened... My brothers gf made a reservation for 7:15pm. There were 7 of us. There were 2 parties, about the same size, that walked in after us and were seated before us. So, Her mom went to the hostess stand to check on our table. It was about 7:30 at this point. Well, (I'll give you the spark notes of this) Doug (in a nasty tone) said that the people at our table could stay as long as they wanted to before we were seated. So what's the point in making a reservation?? He also added that he's doing Them "a favor" by serving us and clearing our table AT 7:40 FOR OUR 7:15 RESERVATION! A FAVOR?!?! Then Her mom stood up for herself, and Doug responded "we don't have to seat you at all, you can leave and go somewhere else" Which of course is infuriating, so My brothers bf suggested a walk with her mom to cool down--under his breath Doug said "that's probably a good idea". If I could give this zero stars... i would. This was the WORST restaurant my fiancé and I have EVER been to. Starting out, once you get here you feel immediately judged. The ladies at the front were extremely rude. We ended up having to wait for 30 minutes although we already had a reservation. Once we finally got seated, our server, Cenya came over. She was super friendly and had great suggestions for the drinks. She gave us our tokens that are used to signal the employees on whether we want food or not right away. What I was really upset about, is the fact that she never told us anything about the food options that they had. Apparently, you have the option of having a one meat meal with access to the salad bar or the unlimited meat with access to the salad bar which is the most popular aswell as the most expensive. As someone who doesn't eat an excessive amount, I found it very upsetting that I was never told about any option just because one option is more "popular" than the other. Considering I was paying $70 for a few pieces of steak and some salad was crazy to me. The food, like every other review has said, is okay. The appetizers were also okay. There was cheesy bread, fried plantain, fried yuca, and some other small appetizers that aren't worth mentioning. We came for a birthday, and we received a mini cheesecake which was good. Wasn't charged, but they took the extra one back. To give to someone else? Kept batting away gnats/fruit flies. Got complimentary little breads with "turkey spread." I'm sorry, what? Ordered charcuterie. They don't have crackers. Didn't get extra bread. A platter of a ton of hunks and slices of cheese and meats... just a weird board. Enough cheese for six people. Which is ok I guess but hard to eat without crackers or bread. We didn't/couldn't eat half of it. It was a weird experience. Disappointing because we got a $100 gift card we were excited to use for date night. Poor bartender. Only a few of us there when we got there, but slammed with probably 30 people when we left and she was alone. At least Pop Tarts Bowl was on. We have always loved coming here. But this time was I was a big disappointment. The prices have increased tremendously , No more Valet service and parking sucks. Our server was non existent, Horacio (spelling ??). Meat server Was the best as he has always been. So attentive by in making sure we had items while our sever ignored us. Made sure we were having a wonderful time celebrating our birthdays and Also remembered us from previous visits. I do not know our servers name ....he never said. He did wear rubber gloves the whole time. I had been wanting to try this place since I moved to Charlotte with my girlfriend over the summer. Thankfully, restaurant week gave us an affordable opportunity to try the place out. I loved every single things I had! The amazing experience started with the host, who made sure to let us know that we would get texted when our table was ready. We went upstairs to get an amazing drink while we waited, which wasn't that long at all. Our server was amazing as were the managers who kept checking on us and letting us know what was going on. I took advantage of my husband getting up to go to the bathroom, to ask the waiter to bring a dessert because we were celebrating a birthday. I've eaten here on 2 separate occasions. The first time was a company dinner. We sat upstairs in the private room and had the salad bar to ourselves. This past time was date night and we sat downstairs. We were treated the same on both occasions. Based on the reviews, I was expecting it to be different but it wasn't. We dressed up but there were several people dressed very casually despite the dress code. We made a reservation and was seated right away upon arrival. We had the waitress, Stephany, who was very attentive, friendly, and professional - and had a great smile. She kept our drinks filled and checked on us often. The food was amazing both visits. The cuts of meat weren't better when we were in the private room or when we were downstairs. It was very good both visits and the salad bar had more than enough options. I was judging the mash potatoes because they were runny but they were actually really good. I didn't really like the other appetizers. Overall, the food was great during both visits - just don't ask for well-done. It came out burnt (crispy burnt and uneatable) more than once so I stuck to medium well which was fine with me. Once she came and introduced herself she started by asking if we wanted anything to drink we kept telling her no to any alcoholic beverages but she was so persistent it was annoying. We originally saw this restaurant when we moved to Charlotte this summer. We finally decided to visit after we got moved in and settled. Last night, we visited after making reservations. Ghulam was our waiter. I cannot tell you how fantastic and attentive he was! He explained everything to us and the service was amazing! I cannot tell you enough how friendly EVERYONE was. The food was great and we cannot wait to be back. There was one thing in particular that I thought was very interesting and refreshing. When we walked in, the manager was at the front and actually checked us in. During our visit, I heard the manager check with his employees on several occasions to see if they needed anything. On top of that, he helped clear the tables, and still had the time to ask us how our food was! I have been in management positions in the food and beverage industry, as well as other industries. I guess the lounge is used for another waiting area. The bar is easy to access if you are waiting for a table and would like to get a drink while you wait. I was not a fan of the cold bar. FOOD- Well we want during restaurant week but got the upgrade. Which came with everything. I only eat seafood so I only had salmon, shrimp, veggies and pineapples. They salmon was VERY GOOD I had it with the passionfruit sauce. The SHRIMP WAS VERY GOOD TOO!! And the pineapple was SO SO GOOD, they roast it with brown sugar and cinnamon, wish they could roast me a whole pineapple to go. My husband ate all the meat and he was NOT a fan. It was only one meat that he really liked (I can't remember the name). He said the meat are just OK but was expecting it to taste better (Due to us going to Brazz before). SERVICE- The hostess was really nice and greeted us with a smile. We waiting like 10 mins, because we got there 15 mins early. The guys that was bring the meat to the table was nice as well. My friend purchased a substantial amount of gift cards and saved the receipt. He made a reservation at the restaurant with friends and family and attempted to use the gift card but the server and restaurant manager refused to honor it. He showed the gift card receipt as well but they still wouldn't let him leave the restaurant till he paid his bill. My friend is a highly placed in the community and is a respected businessman. He chose to exit the restaurant quietly but did and is continuing to reach out about the fraudulent gift cards at Chima. He has attempted to resolve this issue with several phone calls to the restaurant but they refused to talk to him or give him the results of the "research" they say they're gonna have to do to determine the validity of his card. Wow! I was blown away by Chima. This had been a place that we had wanted to try since moving to Charlotte last summer. When we saw restaurant week was coming (Queen's Feast), we knew we had to take advantage of it at Chima. The inside is gorgeous. It's very open. Downstairs, there are chairs and a fireplace to enjoy while you're waiting. There is a curved staircase leading upstairs. Upstairs, there is a bar, along with a couple of smaller table to wait at as well. We did the valet parking, and then after checking in, we went upstairs to grab a Brazilian drink. The strawberry Caipirinha was delicious! Very well done. We waited about 10 minutes, and then our table was ready. We were sat next to the downstairs gourmet salad bar. Our servers, Logan and Cameron, were very nice. They explained everything to us, including the different options for restaurant week, and how the dinner courses would work. We were provided with these small dough puffs that were heavenly. Then we could grab a plate and go around the salad bar. This is not your average salad bar. There are many types of salads and fruit, and even soup, but there is also an assortment of meats and vegetables and so many items I can't even name them all. I loved what I got. I even tried the grilled artichoke, which I'd never had before (not bad). Then the meat started coming. These servers in white shirts, black pants, and big brown boots walked around and brought big skewers of food to your table. They would slice it if you wanted some, and then you would use your little tongs to grab the piece. We tried so many meats! Of all of them, the most memorable one was the lamb chops. The lamb chops were so tender. They had a chimmichuri sauce on it, but it wasn't over-powering. Plus, one of our servers brought us a mint jelly sauce that paired perfectly with the lamb, as it helped cut through the fatty-ness of the lamb. Other note-worthy meats included the flank steak, leg of lamb, filet wrapped in bacon, and the garlic chicken. Honestly one of the best items was the grilled pineapple! I was very pleasantly surprised. We had him come by a few times- it was that good! We had our servers, managers, and others checking on us, making sure we got everything that we wanted (and paid for). About half way through our meal, we were informed that the downstairs grills had stopped working right as they were opening. On a Friday night. The first night of restaurant week! I can't imagine! They apologized and said it had taken a while to get food coming out, because the upstairs and downstairs had been shared one grill for about 2 hours. Luckily, the downstairs grill started working again. I know this must have put a damper on people's evenings, but everyone was very accommodating to us. We got dessert to finish the night. I got the chocolate cake, and he got the cheesecake. The chocolate cake was dry, and I only ate about half of it. The cheesecake had a really good sauce drizzled over it, and the cake itself was very moist. My boyfriend didn't like all the fruit sauce, but I did. We had a wonderful time at Chima. I've been to Chima before the pandemic and it's clear things have changed. Understandably everything pretty much has. Lets start with the sides/salad bar. The selections were very vague and if i might add the taste was mediocre for the price. Being a Chef I expected the unexpected and that's just what I received an unexpected level of disappointments. The muffins that were served were the size of a donut hole. We received four at a table of six. The mash potatoes were served as if it was for a toddler serving. Not mention it's consistency was like water. Again I was in a party of six. The waitress was nice but only visited my table twice, once to take my order and then again to deliver the check. We ask a runner for a water refill. I dropped my silver and asked a meat server if he knew where I could retrieve another. I was greeted by the sweetest person, Esmeralda, who was the manager on duty. She made me feel like the most important customer in the place, I was the only customer:) but non the less she opened the bar after welcoming to stay. She sat me precisely at 530 after I had two the best Manhattans made by two different bartenders and was greeted by Harrison the server. So I was like ok, I can go they have two meats I can eat. When I get there they start walking around and I am waiting on the only two meats I like. I told the server about it. His name was Trey. He didn't not believe us that she was 11. We even have her birthday tattooed on our arms. But made me feel like I was lying about it. Which thank god by then we had finished eating. But that was gross. And lastly, Trey walks over and says since we had a party of 5 they automatically charge the tip on the bill. Wow! I mean, there's great food up there. I think you could do just fine with that and skip the meatfest. Whoa! What am I thinking! Twenty different kinds of meats on skewers make the rounds of the dining room. Prime rib, sirloin, pork loin, bacon wrapped filet mignon, lamb chops, even platters of fresh baked salmon and swordfish. I felt bad for the kid with the Brazilian sausages and the chicken. I mean, sure we'll give it a try, but that's not why we're here. Tip on the lamb chops. They're ten times better with some of the mint jelly. Yes, mint jelly. Trust me on this. Fantastic service. The food was delicious the server explained to us the process to us on how they will bring out the 18 varieties of meats and how we can go up to the buffet and get our sides. This was my first experience at a Brazilian steak house and I really enjoyed it. My favorite would have to be the sausage and the Lamb chops. My only complaint would be how long you have to wait for certain meats to come around. I'm sure this is common but with it being my first experience, I was surprised by how long it takes. The extras that you get were so good. It was my 1st time trying fried bananas and fried polenta. I liked them both. The mashed potatoes were pretty bland. If you're going to splurge then this is the place to do it! Every bit of the experience is worth it. I came here for my birthday dinner and I will never forget the experience. If you've never been to a Brazilian steakhouse then you're in for a feast! Ok now there is a huge buffet and everything on the buffet is amazing. I love love love the seafood salad yes it's All you can eat. As you're sitting there feasting away there are Gauchos walking around with all sorts of cuts of Beef (Bacon Wrapped Filet Migon, Flank, and a few others I can't remember), Lamb Chops, and Chicken. Now don't forget the Pineapple with the Cinnamon and Brown Sugar I probably ate a whole Pineapple to myself. Everything at Chima was amazing and so delicious. They have Valet parking, good drinks, and an experience you'll never forget. Try not to over eat here because it's really easy to do. read more
