Great option for interesting and unique Peruvian tapas cuisine. I think the food is more of a 3.7 star, however the service brings it to a 4 for me. Went with a big group and I was impressed how well our server handled the orders, communicated clearly and kindly, and was adequately attentive. They also have an easy way to pay via tap/scan a QR code. Each of us could select the items we ordered and pay directly with card or Apple Pay. I was really pleased with the service. The price is also not bad--$70 will give you a tasting menu and there was plenty of food. Drinks come separately, unfortunately. I ordered the Maracuya sparkling water (nonalcoholic) very fruit forward. Even though I was the only peacatarian of the group, they made small substitutions for me. First round was a quinoa salad, ceviche, and chicken salad. I don't typically like quinoa but this one was quite flavorful. The ceviche was bomb, no notes. My friends had mixed reviews on the chicken salad as it was a bit mushy with the addition of the potato on top. Since I couldn't enjoy the chicken, they offered me grilled shishito peppers--which is generally not my thing, they gave it to me without asking. It tasted all right with a umami mushroom powder that was only on some of the peppers. Next we had sanguche de pescado (crispy catfish on a lotus bun) and dancing yuca. These two were the most yummy to me as the sauces on both dishes were so flavorful. Our main included lomo Saltado and aji de gallina. Presentation was spot on and my friends raved about the tenderness of the meat and diversity of flavors. As a substitute, I was given a shrimp dish with mushrooms and spicy black bean and a veggie fried rice called aeropuerto. I liked both dishes, although I wasn't blown away. For dessert we had popsicles--coconut, passion fruit, and chichamorrada--and suspiro limeña. I wasn't taken by the latter which is like dulce de leche with passion fruit, but it was a great presentation and its deconstruction could make it interesting to eat. The popsicles were fine. Great experience as usual! Love the good here and the service is always great, ambiance I nice but a little loud. Dinner was some dumplings (superb) and lomo saltado (delicious if a bit salty but actually I like it that way), and we share some desserts. I like the caramel custard dessert the best. The others are good, but the deconstruction of the kiwicha cookie dessert makes it hard to eat all the flavors together. They aren't served as a unit so it's good but I feel like I'm not getting the full effect. Pisco sours are always the best. Definitely recommend it! read more

A friend and I came in on a weekend (forgetting that it was a weekend!) and they were packed. A reservation isn't necessary, technically. However, the restaurant fills up quite fast, and there may not be available seating when you stop by, it's best to reserve a table. I believe they use Open Table for reservations. We didn't have any reservations when we came by; we were just really hungry after a long day. They made it work for us because we just wanted quick, small bites. We were sat in the corner at the ceviche bar. They were really good about accommodating us, even though they were quite busy. We ordered the following dishes to share: sanguche de chancho, shishito peppers, papas a la huancaina and a suspiro a limena (for dessert). Everything was so delectable! Portions are what you would expect for a higher end city restaurant (prices reflect that too). My favorite has got to the be the dessert and the pork belly small bite. The decor was quite unique with a few fabulous concepts. I lean more towards a divey-type of vibe in my choice of restaurants. China Chilcano is a Chef Jose Andres restaurant that delivers a fusion of Peruvian, Chinese and Japanese infused dishes. So glad my friend decided to give this place a try. We visited during "Pisco Hour" and tried a few of their bar bites and cocktails. For food we tried the Sui Mai Pollo, Ji Song Chifero, Sánguche de Pescado and for drinks we both tried the Pisco Sour and Chilcano. While I enjoyed the Chilcano my friend enjoyed the Pisco Sour. All of the food was flavorful and presented beautifully but that didn't surprise me knowing 1. It's a Chef Andres restaurant and 2. it's a fusion of 3 cultures who's food is known for their rich flavors. I will definitely be back to indulge in some of their other menu items. read more

Went here for restaurant week in 2024 and had one of the best meals I've ever had! Everything was amazing and we've been dreaming of those desserts ever since! Both the desserts were not too sweet and had a variety of textures and flavours which all came together perfectly in each bite. Our server was super helpful and walked us through the menu with recommendations. We tried the ceviche which was fresh and tasty as well as the baos to start. For the mains the server recommended the Ají de Gallina. Unfortunately it had nuts which I am allergic to, but my boyfriend loved it. They were kinda enough to get us a third main since they missed the nuts, and knew we were sharing. It was a great value meal for restaurant week and allowed us to try a lot of the menu. The restaurant also had a nice vibe to match the theme of fusions of cultures. Definitely will be going back and would recommend! It was also my first introduction to Jose Andres. I had the tallarin zhen fe--- very poor concept honestly. Super expensive for little value. Inside the restaurant was suffocating and overstimulated. The buns were good but extremely stingy for the value. The other reviews where people say its a mix of cuisines where the concept is confusing--- is completely correct. I didn't know anything about Peruvian Criollo, Chinese Chifa or Japanese Nikkei cooking before stepping into this restaurant. I'm not sure that I could begin to explain what any of these cuisines are, even after dining here. But what I can say is: I like them a lot. The "Lunch in Lima" option is a good value. It's 3 courses and all 3 cuisines are represented in some way. Yucca fries, a 1st course possibility, has a simple name however is anything but. The mash-up of yucca, kabayaki sauce, aji amarillo sauce, and bonito flakes is out of this world. I could eat those every day of my life. Donburi ji song, my choice for 2nd course, is a concoction of sir-fry chicken, pickled daikon radish, rice, onion, avocado, and kung pao sauce that's sprinkled with finely chopped peanuts. It's subtle and yet hearty. For dessert, 3rd course, I went with the "suspiro limeña". It's a crazy, tubular-looking sweetened condensed milk custard topped with a crunchy meringue and passion fruit. It arrives flat on a plate and seems to a piece of geometric art. At first, I wasn't sure if it was to be eaten! It's sugary and tart all at once but grows on you slowly. Also tried the "Lucky 12". This is a presentation of dainty shumai which features 4 pieces of 3 types: chicken (pollo sui); pork & shrimp (tradicional); and a combo creation (dorado). The dorado comes topped with quail eggs and gold flakes--decadent. My favorite is the tradicional shumai because of the jicama and shiitake mushroom mixed in. The black vinegar dipping sauce that accompanies rocks big time. The various dishes are carefully plated and presented. I imagine there was much experimentation to arrive at a menu that is balanced and respectful to the 3 nations (Peru, China and Japan) that are honored here. Additionally, the artwork, furniture, and layout of the space is lovely. It all adds up and becomes the space that is China Chilcano. Went to China Chilcano for a show and ordered four different dishes. Service is attentive but not overbearing. The dancing yucca was my favorite dish and had a decent portion of food. We left satisfied but not completely full. Portions are tapas style not at tapas prices. The food comes out very quickly which made everything like warm rather than hot/freshly prepared. We were given the wrong dish and had to wait about ten minutes for someone to come by and bring us the correct one. However, waters were filled quickly. My wife and I decided to play "tourists" for the day, even though we live in the suburbs outside of Washington, DC by taking the Metro into the city to stop at the US Botanical Gardens which has a seasonal model train set on display for Christmas and decided as long as we were downtown to go have lunch at China Chilcano, a restaurant run by world renowned Chef Jose Andres. The restaurant has lots of open seating with tables for two, four and larger groups and interesting light fixtures throughout. Before taking us to our seats, the greeter took the time to inquire if we had any food allergies, and upon hearing that I have a Shellfish allergy, a special menu was provided that takes allergies into consideration. My wife had eaten there once before, but this was my first time, so she recommended we start off with a cocktail she had there before and we both ordered Pisco Sours, a Peruvian drink that is very popular. For appetizers, we shared the Shishito peppers, which came out nicely spiced with enough for two which we ate using chopsticks that were provided for the meal. For entrees, my wife ordered the Donburi Ji Song and I ordered the Aeropuerto with a side of pork-belly. Both dishes were very appealing and mine came in a deep white bowl with a generous amount of rice. For dessert, we shared a very artistic Suspiro a Limena which included marshmallow "sticks" that melted in your mouth. We left well fed and satisfied. This place was absolutely excellent. The decor is very unique - a true mix of Peruvian and Chinese elements. We sat next to the window and it was prime people-watching space. Our server was excellent - she had extensive knowledge of the menu and we felt comfortable taking recommendations from her. Everything we ordered was flavorful and fresh. The salmon tiradito was mind-blowing: the textures and flavors blended beautifully and when we finished the dish I was legitimately sad that I was too full to order another! The restaurante is really nicely decorated. The staff is friendly and we're really helpful when we had questions about the menu. We went for lunch, a little before 3 and it wasn't too full, our table was ready in no time! We got the Tam Tam noodles, which were just too spicy for me. If you're not used to spice get something else. They sounded so good, but I could barely taste anything else because it was so spicy... and I do eat spicy things. We also got the Tallarín Zhen Fe, which was really good. We added some pork belly to it and it went really well with the tomato stew from the dish. The ají de gallina was everyone's favorite. Flavorful and a really good portion size. We also ordered a Dancing Yuca for the table, which was really good. For drinks, If you're there I recommend the pisco sour. It was good. Ultimately, the experience was good. The food was yummy, but I personally don't think it's anything to write home about. absolutely amazing!!!! the decor is so cute, and we were seated at a cozy table right by the window, which was a great spot. we started off with drinks. i ordered a lychee chuhai, which was absolutely delicious - i'm a sucker for anything with lychee in it. we then ordered the yucca fries and szechuan brussels sprouts. our server was super accommodating when i told him i was a vegetarian, and he took the bonito flakes off the fries. later, when i ordered the aeropuerto, he told me it had oyster sauce and said he would have it removed. the fries were great, as were the cilantro/squash dumplings we ordered later, but the brussels sprouts were genuinely out of this world. the peanuts on them sent them over the top. my main meal, the aeropuerto, was also incredible, and i can't wait to have the rest for leftovers later (the portion size was bigger than i expected!) we ended with the chocolate cake, which was really different and delicious. the sauce it came with was nicely tart and fruity, and the ice cream was very refreshing. the crumble had almost an espresso taste and it all came together amazingly. i am really glad i checked this place out - what a great place for a nice meal with friends :) read more

Restaurant week provided the perfect opportunity to sample some of José Andrés' must have flavor combinations at China Chilcano, for an incredibly generous price point. While the restaurant was crowded we were met at the door, checked in, and then offered complimentary glasses of wine while we waited. Despite the plethora of people it never seemed too loud, and when we were seated it was comfortable and easy to hold conversations. The meal itself was magnificent, giving my taste buds something new to relish in every couple of bites. I was told ahead of time that the Aji de Gallina was a must try and I in turn pass that recommendation on to whoever else comes here for the first time. A hearty stew packed with bursts of flavor and perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken I can't imagine having come here without having it. The Dancing Yucca was similarly a masterpiece with my only complaint being there wasn't more to share once we had a chance to dig into everything. Dessert was so creative and beautiful. On the way out of the Museum of Natural History this morning, we decided to have a quick lunch. Passing China Chilcano, we noticed the Restaurant Week menu in the window and decided that would be a reasonable deal, so we stopped in and we're given a table for two by the window. But when we were ready to order, our waiter said the Restaurant Week price was not available yet. I felt cheated, but figured maybe I had missed a future date, do we went ahead and ordered. The beer list was weak, so I just had water. My wife was ok with the draft beer that she got. I chose the prix fixed brunch and found both the ceviche and the ahi de gallina to be good. Nancy had the Jalea Mixta which was OK although she hadn't focused on the fact that it was fried. The dessert was the only special dish. My wife noticed that the table at which we were sitting had seen better days...some of the varnish was flaking off and it was down to the bare wood in places. From the tasting menu of $79 per person, the only 2 decent dishes were: the sirloin and potatoes (French fries) bowl and the banana ice cream and mousse dessert. My friends and I recently had dinner at China Chilcano and we had no problem being seated right away without a reservation on a Sunday evening. Here's the rundown of what we ate: CEVICHE We initially ordered the jaladito norteño; however, we had to send it back since we didn't care for the creamy base. We replaced it with the ceviche clasico, which had the classic acidic citrus flavor we were looking for. PIQUEOS My friend ordered the dancing yucca, which was doused in sauce and overly cooked. I skipped this dish since I remembered not liking it during a previous visit. VEGETABLES The Szechuan Brussels sprouts were delicious and filling! DIM SUM The pollo siu mai were delicous shumai dumplings with chicken, scallion, mushroom and other complimentary ingredients. RICE AND NOODLES The concolón was a scene stealer. It was mixed tableside by our server and it did not disappoint! It was also large enough to be shared with three people. DESSERT We shared the torta de chocolate, a yummy chocolate cake complimented by passion fruit-huacatay sorbet and macambo crumble. We devoured this! We each ordered a cup of coffee to pair with our dessert; however, the coffee arrived lukewarm. We asked for hotter coffee and the replacement cups of coffee were only slightly warmer. I asked for almond or oatmilk and they brought us what they had left in the restaurant, which was a measly 2 ounces. Fortunately, the black coffee tasted great, so it wasn't a huge issue. SERVICE Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and was patient while we made up our minds about what to order. So, my son recently watched a Chef's Table about Jose Andres and really wanted to try his restaurants. When we got to China Chilcano, we couldn't decide what to eat so we said whatever, let's try the Tatami tasting menu. Best decision we've made in a while. Some of the dishes were simply marvelous such as the Jaladito Norteño. I would order that again in a heartbeat. My little foodie son was a huge fan of the Pulpo al Olivo Rosita and even though he's very sensitive to spicy things, he absolutely loved the Szechuan Chili Wontons. Our only complaint was that by the time we got to the main dishes of the fourth course, we were too stuffed to eat as much as we really wanted. Shoutout to the staff... we decided to make this a quick stop before we headed out to the Smithsonian for an evening event and gave them the insane request of can we do a 5 course tasting menu in about an hour and 15 minutes, which they accommodated .We also asked for nothing prepared with alcohol, and they made a last minute change to one of the dishes to boot! Nearly a Michelin experience without the excessive cost and tiny portions. There were five of us and we (over) ordered over 20 Food and drink items. The winning drink was their Pisco Sour, with the flavorful Pisco Punch coming second. As for the food items, the Lomo Saltado, a bellwether dish for Purevan restaurants, was particularly delicious. Other standouts were the Hamachi Sashimi. It was bursting with flavor, and I'm a yellowtail fan in any event. Also, the Dancing Yucca was very tasty, delightfully crisp on the outside, nicely seasoned, and you get a lot of it. On the other end of the spectrum were the Shishito Peppers. I think they left out an ingredient I call seasoning. The staff was charming, the dining room was clean, and the tables were spaced out nicely. For the record, while I don't like José Andrés personally, I think he's a great chef, an outstanding humanitarian, and kind of funny given the chance. We got the lucky twelve which is a combo of their steamed dumplings and siu mai dishes, but the flavor just was not there. The meat was lacking in spice and just wasn't up to my standards for other Chinese restaurants I've been to. We also got the rice noodle dish and the portion was extremely small it was laughable. I ate family style with 3 other people and genuinely we each only got maybe the tiniest bite from this plate and it was gone. Def not worth the $. The dishes I did enjoy though were the clay pot rice and the chili wontons, and that's simply because they were better than the other dishes we had in comparison, but not something I would reorder and come back for. The restaurant wasn't too busy so the restaurant was pretty quiet inside which I didn't mind. We had the Aeropuerto with ground chicken, which was delicious and super flavorful with great textures and colors. I really enjoy a dish that is visually pleasing to the eye even before I taste it. But the Lomo Saltado was the absolute highlight! This beefy dish with tomatoes, peppers, onions, and potatoes had amazing flavor, with the added saltiness in the soy sauce. This was our favorite entrée, hands down. I have to be a fan of large pieces of onion. The flavors were on point. Surprisingly delicious food! The concolon was amazing and my favorite dish. The stone pot fried rice was flavored perfectly. I highly recommend it for those who like Asian profiles and fried rice. After six years and countless visits, China Chilcano remains our favorite restaurant in Penn Quarter, and probably our favorite among the Jose Andres restaurant empire. There are so many reasons, but chief among them is that Peruvian food offers such a wonderful and accessible variety of flavors and textures, from ceviches to dumplings to chaufas, causas, cocktails, and great seafood, meat, or vegetarian options. I've spent time in Peru and China Chilcano is the real deal -- on par with the great restaurants of Miraflores. When you factor in that it's reasonably priced (for the area), it's five stars for me. The food is very interesting and very well presented. On our 20th anniversary of meeting (married 3 years later) my wife and I popped in before a movie. It was early and service was a bit slow in a section just opening up for dinner rush. Decor is open and SA style friendly. Perfectly fried on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. I loved the ahi amarillo mayo with the bonito flakes with gave it so much flavor. Unfortunately, the pork sui mai was just okay. It was really small and the dough was thick. The pork didn't really stand out and was really dense. My main dish was Lomo Saltado which came with beef filet, tomato, soy sauce, aji amarillo pepper, tomato and onions. The sauce was simple but really really flavorful and the meat was cooked pretty well at medium rare. My knife cut through it pretty well and there was a good chew to the meat. The peppers and onions were crunchy and flavorful which provided some good texture to the dish. Overall pretty solid! read more

I have to start by saying I sat in an area where the yellow lighting was just awful... It was hard to see clearly and it was messing with my head. Other than that, the food was nice. Kind of overpriced for the quantity in my opinion - definitely for the occasional outing (plus it's DC). Service was okay. I got the classic ceviche and lomo saltado as my main plates. The ceviche is a cold dish but the fish was literally frozen. The meat in the lomo wasn't any better. It was tough and had a lot of ligaments. The appetizers were OK. Most of the dishes are very sweet traditional. Both of the appetizers were very sweet and so was the Loma Salado, which usually has a savory taste in case you're not into sweeter dishes. Def go somewhere else. Interesting spot! The food was generally very good - dancing yucca and lomo saltado were standouts. The hamachi ceviche was just meh, fish quality and flavors weren't quite there. Drink menu is a strange mix of Peruvian and Japanese. Most of the cocktails are made with pisco or sake, so you're limited on cocktail options if you aren't a fan of either. This is one of my favorite spots in DC and despite the great decor and food, it never seems to be as busy the other Jose Andres restaurants around town. This food is "Chifa" style -- a cuisine I was obsessed with in Peru, which is Peruvian-Chinese fusion cuisine that includes dishes like lomo saltado, arroz chaufa, and tallarín saltado. Chifa dishes are often served in large portions for sharing. I've gone on special date nights here as well as more recently with my kids. We got a spot right by the window so we could watch all the excitement pass by on 7th street. For drinks, they have a great wine menu with various wines from South America. But my go-to drink here is definitely the Pisco Sour. The frothy drink made with pisco from Peru always is spot on. For food, I've pretty much been pretty consistent on my visits getting the lomo saltado (cubbed steak, dark sauce, vegetables, and french fries mixed in a stew). I also have ordered the ají de gallina (which is a rich creamy chicken stew topped with egg and rice). I love both these dishes so would recommend either. For a lighter dish the lomo saltado might be your better choice. The "dancing yucca" fries are also a must-order -- fried crispy and stacked on plate topped with various sauces, including a white cream sauce, and bonito flakes (basically dried tuna that is sheared into thin strips). The kids devoured them. Finally, we ordered the shrimp and calamari special. This was probably my least favorite since it was all fried. But guess what? It was a hit with the kids big time. I'm not sure I would have ordered it if I knew it was fried but guess I didn't ask either? It was tasty, but I can only eat so much fried food. WOW. Let's all get transported to Cusco, Peru! As a fellow traveler, this place blends all sorts of cuisine, Chinese, Peruvian, for starters. We went with a group of 10 and did family style for dishes and sat on small chairs around a table together. The vibe was fantastic! Service was attentive and caring. We tried almost the entire menu as a group and the pastas were fantastic. The dim sum was also wonderful. Some stand outs: the lamb (salto something), the aeropuerto noodle, tan tam noodle.
