We have been eating at China City through 3 location changes (Kasteels, Pioneer way, and the current one) and have always loved it! We recently ordered a takeout meal during the covid changes, and I have to say it was all absolutely fabulous and seamless. Ordered and paid via phone, and once parked at the restaurant for pickup it was out quickly. We had Mongolian Beef (which we always get), chicken chow mein, steamed rice, and egg flower soup. The beef was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and a perfect amount of spice for all of us, even our children. So if you like things super hot, you might ask for extra spice. The chicken and chow mein noodles were delicious and generous chunks of chicken made it a meal. Of course, the soup was divine, flavorful and silky texture ...and we had the leftovers for lunch the next day very happily. I had actually forgotten to order the soup, and called the restaurant before driving away. Mason, our to-go server handled it immediately and had it out and we were on our way. So glad we chose to go here. We have been trying to support local restaurants by getting takeout at least once per week during the shutdown. See you soon China City. read more

The food was very bland and to expensive for what little you get, the service was terrible our waitress was not doing a good job even though we gave her the consideration that she might be having a bad day and all she was still rude she only took half our tables drink orders and kept spilling our food on the table, the lighting was good and the room was very well put together didn't look dirty at all. I am doing 1 star, because of the manager, Dale. I called after not receiving my food after an hour and a half. She said, " both drivers are out delivering. I am not a mind reader , so I don't know where they are." WTF! What kind of manager talks to customers like that????? We decided to try this restaurant even though we read some bad reviews and low rating. We ordered orange chicken, general ng's and chicken chow mein. The egg drop was good. However the orange chicken and general ng's were exactly the same with nothing but fried chicken with Americanized sauce added on top. The chicken chow mein was far from desirable and seemed like what was heated and served rather than freshly prepared. The Great Wall of China cocktail drink is highly sugared drink and didn't like it either. This is not authentic Chinese but Americanized Chinese. read more

Super unfortunate because the food here is fantastic but the customer service for their pickup line was horrendous. Placing an order using their website as a reference, we were rudely accepted by the person on the other end. Asking for a side of rice was like gritting teeth, with a response of "We can add any side to an order but nothing comes with a side" ... like they weren't expecting us to be open to paying the $1-2 for a side of rice? They went on to repeat this message for the next entree we ordered. I expressed how the website words 'sides' for the entrees and they responded "That's really awkward and unfortunate." I couldn't even finish ordering, cancelled the whole thing and Called China Harbor instead. They're always kind and don't have someone snarky taking phone orders. I feel horrible for their delivery drivers because she's killing a tip before the food even leaves the premises. Maybe we caught the phone taker at a bad time, but if you're not prepared to take orders and answer the phone, don't... and take a breath. This is far too small of a town to be rude to your customers and use condescending expressions. We will not be calling back. (I never leave bad reviews, but it's the day after thanksgiving and this one was pretty frustrating.) read more

Really not one to post reviews regarding a negative experience however, I felt it was worthwhile doing so this time. I understand the dollar continues to get you less and less but this time I was legitimately shocked. I paid $19 for a 3/4 filled container of Mongolian beef. I placed an order over the internet on Saturday at 8:30, called them at 8:50 to verify that the order was received and no one answered the phone or I should say it rang multiple times and the line went dead. When trying to place another call it would not go thru, on the next attempt the call went to a full voice mailbox??? At 8:54 I got an email message from the service saying the order was not placed because china city would not answer the phone. This is shit service at its finest. These people suck & it will be a cold day in hell before I set foot at any of their locations, let alone place an order. Owner/Manager be prepared, I'll be in to speak directly to you tomorrow. This was the worst Chinese food experience I have EVER had. I would not even give it a star but that is not an option. They don't have General Tso's chicken. Nothing comes with rice. The "egg rolls" are really spring rolls and three cost $6. And everything was WAY over priced. When our food finally got here it was EXTREMELY disappointing. The breaded/fried chicken was like crumby ends/remains and there was barely any chicken inside the greasy and disgusting fried breading. The chicken was super dry and each box of them was TEN dollars. Super disappointing. NEVER ordering from here again and strongly advise anyone else from doing so either. Sometimes when you are travelling you just are not in the mood to drive around looking for the best place to eat. We were at the Best Western and were kind of hungry for Chinese and the China City place is actually in the Best Western's parking lot so that was pretty easy to do. We found the dining room to be very nice. We had been eating much too much so kept it light. We are always saying we should get an appetizer and soup but never do. This time we did; hot and sour soup and chicken lettuce wraps did the trick. I added a small cup of fried rice to bulk up the soup. The food was all OK, just typical family Chinese. The hot and sour soup was a little sour and a little hot. Neither was over whelming. The rice was pretty mundane. I wanted some sesame oil for the soup and rice, but it was all fine. At the risk of damning with faint praise, it was not bad, not great. We enjoyed the chicken lettuce wraps. The serving was appetizer size, we had enough for five wraps and it came with a little hoisin. It was a nice change from a lot of fried food we had been having. While we did not plumb the depths of the menu, I would say that if you find yourself in our situation of being in the mood for Chinese and not wanting to spend a lot of time looking and are close by, China City is OK. read more

Didnt like the way the bartenders were when they were open, and a waitress that was always there either bartending or serving but now that its delivery and take out, I forgot about her. But the food is amazing. The appetizer shrimpo walnut wraps are the bombdigity. that sizzling rice soup is good too if you rlike soup. Has a little bit of reminensce of the ramen or pho soup but no noddles. just the flavorful broth i love. the Lupia are also to die for. read more

I haven't eaten at the restaurant since they moved to their current location so I can't speak for the location. This is my favorite Chinese Restaurant on the island. People say it's overpriced but if you get the lunch to go options they run between $8-12 a meal. The meals include a cup of soup (try the wonton soup - it's my favorite). I have yet to order anything from them that I did not enjoy. They do offer delivery which is nice and every delivery driver I have interacted with are polite and very costumer oriented. I highly recommend the food from this restaurant. It has become part of my Saturday routine to get lunch from them. ***update*** Went there for lunch, finally made it to the physical restaurant. I loved the interior. They have a bar separate from the dining area (I didn't know they had one) that I plan to go to for some drinks. This was a great find right next to our best Western Hotel in Oak Harbor, Wa. The restaurant was beautifully decorated. We sat down had some great hot tea and split basil noodles on my request! Love everything about china city. We've now been for dinner a few times and twice in the bar for lunch and each time has been exceptional service and great food. My teapot has never been empty for long and our food hasn't ever taken very long to come out. My picky child loves coming for dinner, it's hard finding places he will eat and this is one that makes something enjoyable to him. The wonton soup is fantastic. Love that they are not stingy with kale here. Take advantage of the half price apps in the bar for lunch. That is lunch itself with some friends! Fast and cheap and pretty good service! read more

So it's been over 16 years since I've eaten at China City, when they were originally in downtown Oak Harbor. I have to say the new location is quite convenient being off of Hwy 20. The settings, atmosphere, decor, and everything about the restaurant makes me feel like I'm eating at a fancy restaurant. Service was quick, food came out fast and on very nice plates and dishes. Prices were very reasonable considering I felt like I was at a higher end Chinese restaurant. But best of all, the food was fantastic! Love their hot & sour soup. Wife had sweet & sour pork. Perfectly deep fried pork and a wonderful sauce. I had the Mongolian beef which was spiced up to my liking. The food was very reasonably priced. That's why I stick with my 5 star rating which is what I would have given this place 16 years ago! read more

I've gotten Chinese food from China city at least twice (out of 3 times I've been to Whidbey island). It's not the greatest Chinese or asian food I've eaten, but works fine for staples like Kung Pao or Mongolian chicken, especially if you're craving asian food after all the burgers and pies which are more prevalent in restaurants on the island. During CoVid-19, they have a convenient phone-ordering system and had my food ready in 12 minutes, delivered to my car out in the parking lot. All in all - it's fine. It works. read more

We are staying in Whidbey Island for the weekend. On the way to our lodgings east of Oak Harbor, we drove by China City on the lower part of the island. The building was nice and the parking lot was full so we decided to try the Oak Harbor location. We had a reservation so there was no wait. The hostess and waitstaff were friendly and pleasant. I realize everything has gone up in price lately especially restaurants but a Chinese restaurant isn't a fine steak house. Chinese is mainly comprised of vegetables, rice and noodles with chicken, pork and inexpensive beef. So when a meal comprised of the first three ingredients winds up costing just under $100 and the vegetables are obviously frozen peas and carrots, it's time to go elsewhere. I'm from Hawaii where Chinese food is a staple and I didn't realize how good I had it until I had to move away. Whidbey island really doesn't have the best selection of Asian food restaurants so I was excited to try here since we've heard such amazing things about the food. Tip: Don't try to call ahead, no one answers the phone. The inside of the restaurant is very pretty, maybe a little higher scale that other restaurants you'll find in town. It took a few minutes for the staff to realize we were waiting to be seated (we were the only ones in the waiting area) but they were nice and after ordering, our food came out to us quickly. The food was okay, not the best or most authentic tasting. I ordered the wonton soup and added noodles. I was expecting a big bowl of hot soup with loads of wonton and lots of noodles. I got a medium bowl with some warm broth and veggies. Overall it was okay, just not what I was expecting. Nor do I think it was worth $14. My daughter loved their egg rolls and my mother in law said she really enjoyed their shrimp fried rice. Overall: nice staff, quick service, beautiful interior, and probably the best Chinese food you'll find in town. Cons: pricey considering not the most authentic and smaller portion sizes. read more

As someone who grew up eating authentic Chinese food, I really couldn't get it into my mouth. I'm really sorry, this is totally American fake Chinese food. The main problem is that the ingredients are only cooked, and then a very single-flavored American-style sweet sauce is added, which lacks delicate texture, and then the vegetables are not delicious, and the cuts are very casual. I ordered fish and couldn't finish eating. It also made me a little nauseous. read more
