I forgot why I stopped coming here 10+ years ago-- well, they reminded me why! First of all, they acted as if we (me, my wife & eldest) were inconveniencing them while we were trying to pick our items. When I asked for a sample of the shrimp, she toothpicks a piece cabbage from the tray for me(!) Then she has the audacity to flip the credit card screen to indirectly ask for a tip. I oblige and pick 15%, no problem it's a couple of dollars for encouragement/good faith. Here's the kicker: I asked for a refill on my HEAVILY-ICED soda (I told her light ice). She had the nerve to charge me $0.50.-- I'm surprised they are still in business. The food is mediocre but most importantly the business etiquette and service is very poor. Whenever my parents and I carving some quick Chinese food, this is our go to spot! I would usually get the three item combo with chow mien, BBQ chicken and/or BBQ pork or orange chicken. The BBQ chicken and pork is tender but not charred beyond recognition. The chow mien is tasty. The noodles are soft and chewy. The portion servings are bountiful, even for their take out orders. The service here is quick and right to the point. I never dined in the restaurant. I would always do take out. This place may not be as popular as the bigger Chinese fast food place, but suffices if your in the area and craving for some quick Chinese food. read more

I was so glad when this was going to open up a few years ago because I can walk here from my house but was disappointed after my first meal. Everything almost tastes like everything else on their steam table. I have never ordered a freshly cooked meal there but they don't offer much. What they lack in flavor, they make up for in quantity, like most fast Americanized Chinese food places What I don't get is the line out the door every weekday lunch hour, mostly Kaiser employees. Don't they know this stuff is unhealthy? I DO give them 2.5 stars for their new Thai Salad. They make it fresh and is very good but then again I'm partial to Thai food anyway. It probably really depends on what time of day you happen to go. We just so happened to end up here between lunch and dinner, around 3:00. Probably not the best time to go to a place like this, but what can you do. They had a special for $5.99 for fried rice or chow mein plus two items. I chose that. I asked for 50/50 of the fried rice and chow mein. Fried rice was bland and not that far off from being white rice in flavor.It needed something. Not sure what, but something. The chow mein was probably the best thing here.It was pretty good. Orange chicken were big, huge chunks of chicken that were anywhere from the size of a computer mouse to half of that. They were not tender, but hard and crunchy. They would have more than likely been great had they been fresh, but I think these were sitting awhile just by their texture. And lastly, the kung pao chicken was good.It was just lacking...chicken. There were carrots,celery and all kinds of other non identifiables in it, but least of all chicken. Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars This isn't my favorite Chinese restaurant, but it deserves some more love. My wife and I were in the area yesterday, and so I made sure that we ate here for lunch (years ago, I was somewhat of a regular). Great hours: Daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. The doors are heavy. Before entering, I almost whacked this lady who was in the way (I was holding the door open for my wife, and you can't exactly open the door just a crack for a pregnant woman). The steam table features about 18 items (ex: Kung Pao Chicken; Royal Shrimp; Sesame Chicken; Beijing Beef), and there are also over 20 more on the menu (ex: Almond Chicken; Mongolian Beef; Pepper Steak; Cashew Shrimp; Chicken w/Black Bean Sauce; Egg Flour Soup; Fried Wonton). If you're interested, this place caters. The employees aren't overly friendly overall (our cashier was fairly cheerful), but they're quick and competent. The woman who served me would have rushed me a little, but I knew what I wanted by the time it was my turn. There's a large TV in the left corner. Sit near the front if you want to watch what's on. The ambiance is simple, but cool. The large art piece in the middle of the restaurant especially stands out (it looks like it's made out of brass and features some faces). The atmosphere was festive. "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" was even playing (I still have the Elmo & Patsy song on cassette). This isn't a big place, but there are about 8 tables, and the seating capacity is over 30. The booths are nice, but they could be bigger (you might feel cramped if you're eating with 2 or 3 others). The plastic containers are sturdy and heavy. You're not given many napkins, and pepper isn't available here. The soy sauce at the counter was at a bad spot (I didn't really know if I could help myself to it). Only Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce is on the tables (I know that one of my friends will cheer when she reads this). Some Notes: All prices include tax. I wasn't given a receipt, and I could be a little off in terms of what I remember. The take home menus are nice and colorful, but prices for Combos, Bowls, and Bottled Water are not included. Bottled Water: 1.08. Arrowhead is sold here. Combo B (Steamed Rice, Fried Rice, or Chow Mein with your choice of 2 entrées): $6.19. My wife gives her combo a 7/10. She had Chow Mein, Orange Chicken, and Broccoli Beef. She liked her food, and really just found it to be "different." I give my food an 8.25/10. My Fried Rice looked and tasted fresh, and I received a good portion. I've had better in terms of taste, and more peas, carrots, and eggs should be added. My BBQ Pork was tasty, but some pieces were a bit fatty or hard (burnt). My BBQ Chicken was very good, and I received some big pieces (I also received a healthy portion). I'm not surprised (we usually take Chinese food to go), but our food was a little lukewarm. The parking lot is often quite busy. Still, finding a spot shouldn't be too difficult. We ate pretty well for only $13.45. Big eaters like me need to order a lot, though, in order to get full. read more

I really try not to give bad ratings and am usually pretty generous but let me tell you a quick story about this venue from a couple months back. Given: This place is a cheap, take out place which I haven't tried before and I figure "hey , I'll give it a shot" Facts: Right before closing and I'm one of the last if not the last customer in the venue. The place is not packed nor are there any people left sitting in the venue. scene: All the food is gone save for a little bit of some dishes I typically don't try, so I know I'm going to have to try something "new" but hey that's alright. So I walk into this venue and there is hardly any food left but I'm open to try whatever they have left. Having been to many Chinese fast food venues I thought since they had barely any food left over and were closing they would give me an average to above average helping. After all, that is what I would do if I was working here. Almost ALL the food was cleared and I was the last customer of the evening I ordered a Shrimp dish and some other dish. The lady behind the counter seperated the shrimp from the rest of the veggies (?) and set them aside. I thought "this is weird", but was hopeful she would give me a good serving. After setting aside like 8 shrimp she gave me TWO!!!! , and I just started laughing to myself. The amount of veggies left were at most enough for one person. I just thought it was hilarious that she sorted out of the shrimp and "hooked me up" with such a small portion when they closing. I laughed about it and went home to eat hoping that the food would make up for what was lacking in service. The food was very bland and not memorable , not to mention the prices were higher than the venue a block away which has food that is much better and much more plentiful servings for chinese fast food. read more

This is one of the decent Chinese fast food spots in the Hayward area since the 90's. This place is a bit outdated so it definitely needs a remodel. When I need a quick bite to eat I usually order the white rice and the bbq chicken which this place is known for their bbq chicken. I've been coming here for a long time as lunchtime favorite. Though old, this is your typical Chinese take out. They have a bigger than average selection of food thought they only have 1 Noodle and 1 Fried Rice Option. Some of my favorites are the popular BBQ chicken, the sesame chicken, the curry chicken, and the empress chicken. I also do enjoy their hot and sour soup on those cold days and sometimes pick up their eggrolls (average). China Cook does get very busy as many of the Doctors and Nurses who work at Kaiser often come across the street to pick up food. Over the years they went from reasonably priced to on the high side. I guess they figured since a good portion of their customers are doctors from the Kaiser that they can charge lot more than other places. Their 1 item plate starts at about $4.50 and goes up a lot from there. If you get the 2 item plate you're looking around $6.50 when most other places are around $5.00. So for me, they basically have priced their way out of my budget range for what I consider above average Take-Out Chinese Food. There are a couple of spots within a 5 minute drive of China Cook that offer take out at a more reasonable price and I only stop here now if I feel like I either want the soup or maybe the Curry Chicken. read more

My daughter likes the orange chicken & my son likes broccoli beef, they were both nasty. The broccoli was soggy AF too. I have gone there quite a few times. Greasy Chinese food cooked with a lot of oil. Nothing people for people who are vegetarians or people who just eat fish and seafood. Ok, the sometimes have Royal shrimp or like two other dishes, but they always seem to be out. And when i see that they actually DO have royal shrimp there will be one tiny shrimp and and tiny bit left, like a teaspoon left and they will serve it to you like it is a full item. This place is cheap. They even charge you for tea. Drown your food with that red hot sauce that all the Thai places have and you might enjoy iy. Ask for soy sauce after 5 orders to go and they give you one packet of soy sauce. Fucking cheap. they have "special bowl." What is special about it how they trick you with this special bowl. The price on the sign says rice plus one itme. So first thing they ask you is what kind of rice you want. So if you vegetable fried rice then when you go to pay for it they jack up the price. And I asked why doesn't she charge me the price on the sign? Because I upgraded to fried rice they tell me, the price is only for steamed rice. Well I didn't know that, I really don't care if I have steamed rice or fried rice so at least they could have warned me. But nobody speaks English here. Only a tiny amount, they just know their numbers. Go to L&L Hawaiian next door instead and get something better with a much friendlier staff. China Cook is fast...because everything is already heated up and sitting there. I guess it is better than McDonalds...but perhaps tied with Taco Bell quality-wise. This place is okay. It could be better. I like the selection they have. I really love the Curry Chicken!!! That is my favorite there. Everything else is okay. Their pot stickers and soup taste good as well. If you're looking for a place to get quick chineses fast food, this is the go to place. When you order, make sure you watch them carefully. One time, I ordered barbecue chicken and the lady dropped some on the counter and still put it on my plate and I complained loudly about it because the counter is dirty. Lots to choose from, typical hot bar.. Last night I had the 3 item meal. Got chow mein. Orange-ish colored noodles with some veg. Ok tasting, needed soy sauce. Curry chicken- good flavor, would order again. Yellow, not spicy even tho it had red pepper flakes in it. It was creamy, very slightly sweet. Quite good. I got the last portion, so I was skimped a little. Lady did not offer to bring me more when new batch was ready. What-ev. Grilled/BBQ chicken thigh, no sauce. Quite good. Some hidden fat in between the thigh layers.. it was weird. But overall very tasty, and I'm not sick today. (knock on wood) Eggplant with tofu- This, my friends, was really good. Not overly sweet, eggplant cooked very well, tofu was fried but not greasy. I'll be back for this anytime! Also got one patty of egg foo young. Had a tiny bit of chicken, veggie/cabbage and the batter was on the thick side. Tasted like Thanksgiving Asian Biscuit and Turkey gravy... It was QUITE good. I'll have that as my carb next time since it was thickened with some sort of flour/starch.. but it was tasty. Very much a comfort food. Don't go here for a "scene" or great service. The first time I tried this place was when I was pregnant with my son, who is now 9, and have been coming ever since. I looove this place, and now they take cards which is what motivated me to write this review lol.. Customer service isn't always great but I'm well aware I'm not at a 5 star restaurant. Actually theres only one lady that annoys me, everyone else is ok, but again I'm only there for the food lol.. My kids love this place as well. It's the kind of place where even being on Lewelling with a few chinese places near by (I hate panda express with their skimpy servings) we'd still drive to Tennyson for their yummy food, at least for us it is. :) OK I will get back to eating my food now :D read more

food is very plain... fried rice is basically white rice with bits of veggies. i really hate to say this but i'd rather go to panda express.

Be careful what you order, they try to overcharge you when you're not looking. I ordered a "Combo A" which is fried rice or chow mein and 1 item. I even told the woman behind the counter I wanted "Combo A with chow mein and bbq chicken". So she then put the chow mein in the box, then the bbq chicken and then started loading up the chicken in the box and I stood there thinking to myself "well maybe cuz its the tail end of the night and she was just trying to get rid of it". Yea right, what the hell was I thinking! Then she wrote "B" on the top of the box and the cashier rang me up for a "Combo B" when I specifically told the lady I wanted "Combo A". So the cashier opened the box and then said it was because I got a double order of the bbq chicken it was considered a "Combo B". Oh c'mon now you guys just tried to play me for a sucker and tried to overcharge me and hoped I wasn't paying attention. Just wonder how many times they pull this off on unsuspecting customers. The chow mein is dry and the bbq chicken seemed like it was from the day (or week) before. And try to help everyone out for the love of God use less salt on the sauce too. read more

Rice was dry. The server did not understand English well. Had to point to the item I wanted. I would recommend skipping it. read more

Big Mistake! I wish there was a rating below 1 star! I wanted to try because it was close to my apartment. I was there an hour before they closed and the food was dry and they acted like it was a very serious inconvenience that I wanted to dine in. After I finished eating I went to the front to ask for a fortune cookie because I thought they had forgotten to include it with the meal. The cashier wouldn't even look at me and said there was a charge. I thought they were joking...but they were not and apparently the joke was on me. I will never come here again. Not bad, not necessarily healthy....I ordered a bowl of the Beef Broccoli for myself, my mom ordered some eggplant, and we also ordered fried rice and a very small Egg Flower Soup for my little one. This placed was changed another owner apparently, it was not no longer tasty and fresh. The kungpao chicken taste nasty and rice was hard, feel like left over still selling on the counter. Price is on the higher side for a steam table joint. Best time to come by is during lunch or around dinner time, why? Because alot of ppl come thru and that means the turnover on the food is fast. At least that's what I like to believe. Buy bottled or can soda because the fountain drinks always come out flat. One bad experience consists of hair in the chow mein. Why is it always hair in the chow mein? BTW I always order the fried fish because they more than likely will cook to order. Yes even for a few pieces. Confirmed again the other day because when I bit into the piece I had I burnt my tongue, what a fool! Good eats though.....
