Well ZIGGY ZAMN! Once a few days ago, I met up with the boyfriend here to grab a quick bite to eat after a long day of work. I was a bit iffy at first, but my cheap ass saw a huge banner advertising their $4.99 for a 3-item combo, 1-side, and a soup (from the food line only). Initially, I was like... NO effin WAY. I went in and asked the friendly girl at the cashier if I was reading that right and was like... NO effin WAY. Well, believe it or not folks, YIZ WAY. I'm not sure how long this promotion will last, but yall gotta try it before it's over. The plain old banner SUPER caught my attention. I'm assuming they need all the attention they could get considering the fact that it's located in the more deserted area of Clairemont. They surprisingly had a lot in their food line during the time we went (around 3pm), despite the fact that it was dead empty. I really wanted to sample EVERYTHING, but I didn't want to seem like a fatty. So... the boyfriend and I each got that deal; don't worry, I could barely eat half... if I had finished it all, I'd probably still be in a food coma -- and I went there 3 days ago. This is what we tried: Orange Chicken (7/10) -- Doesn't look anything like it (had a reddish hue), but was just as delicious as your generic orange chicken PorkChop (6/10) -- More bone than meat and was served a small portion. Meat, however, was tender and flavorful Coconut Shrimp (8/10) -- Flavor was generic, but VERY delicious. A bit crunchy, but could be crunchier; not surprised since it was probably sitting out for who knows how long. Shrimp was small-medium sized, but they gave a generous portion and there wasn't any "up-charge" for it! Awesome! Mushroom Chicken (8/10) -- Flavor was generic, but very noms. I'm afraid the mushrooms were not fresh button mushrooms, but canned. Either way, the dish was still very good Pepper Steak (8/10) -- I LOVE pepper steak. This one was reallyyy good, but since I know of a specific Chinese restaurant that has KILLER pepper steak, I can't give it any higher than an 8. I would mos def get this one again Eggplant Tofu (7/10) -- I would've given this dish an 8/10 if their tofu wasn't so awkward. Hahahha! I just spent a good 15 seconds trying to find a word to describe the tofu... Anyways, it's like that sweet, fried, and super dense/firm tofu that you can buy at the supermarket. The dish would've tasted a whole lot fresher with just fresh firm tofu. However, I would still get this one again because my taste buddies enjoyed the flavor (: Egg drop soup (8/10) -- VERY delish. Thick and full of flavor. Wonton Soup (7/10) -- Weeee!! No up charge for the wonton soup! It came with 3 big wontons in a very flavorful light broth. It could of used some fresh scallions, but it was okay after I put a few shakes of peppa in it. The wontons were very heavy in "wrapper" and there couldve been more meat filling. Overall in the world of food, food was great and I would definitely get everything I had again. As far as the shop goes, it's a tiny hole in the wall store with minimal seating inside. The girl who helped up front was very friendly. Condiments included soy sauce, duck sauce, mustard, chinese hot sauce, SIRACHA (DING DING DING DING!!) salt, white peppa. Point is: I didn't have to bring my bottle of siracha from home! Waahooo! China Express has really nommmy food and is SUPER affordable during times when your wallet is on strike. I eat here every other day or so for lunch because I work right around the corner and I often order delivery to my home in Mission Valley. You will not find more food in San Diego for $4.99 at lunch time.. anywhere. The food is better than Panda Express and about $3/meal cheaper. The family who owns the place is very nice and delivery has ALWAYS been on time. The best things on the menu are the coconut shrimp, pork scallion, mongolian beef, and the house special chow mei fun. My only issue is that I'm not quite sure why they changed the fried rice to the yellow rice because I like the regular rice better? China Express is one of the very few chinese restaurants in San Diego that are not hybrid thai/chinese or japanese/chinese restaurants. That's like having a greek/italian restaurant. No bueno. I was trying to eat subway a couple of feet away but they were too crowded, so I walked aroind the shoping center, when I past by China express I noticed they had a 4.99 meal, so I took a chance... and lost. Rubbery, slimy, greasy and no flavor... That is how I would describe this place. A few years ago, this place had potential and the food was actually pretty good. Now, it is probably the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Our Beef and Broccoli tastes like previously chewed beef. The Chow Mein was a bunch of slimy, brown noodles with absolutely no flavor. Was hungry after work and craving some broccoli and beef and some Kung pao action. This is near my work and there is an ad on the door for 3 entrees, 1 side and I think a free soda or soup. Anyways, it looked like a place to check out to get these items. The employee behind the counter was really awesome and told me that they could make something that wasn't in the prepared lineup. I ordered the beef and broc and the steamed broc and Kung pao chicken. For two entrees, one side it was $6 I think? The beef and broc with chow mein was $6.50 I believe. A lot of fellow Military wives were raving it was the best take out place in our area. I'm used to a few places in National City, so driving there got old fast. The lunch deals didn;' look too great, but I placed my order before I came; It was just finishing cooking when I walked in, nice and fresh. This place is not that great. I'll start off by letting people know they use spaghetti noodles not Asian noodles. The first time I came it was ok but they gave me a huge plate and that I can always appreciate. However the second time around tiny portions were served and the chicken tasted way too much like bird it was not too pleasant. The "free" drink that comes with it is always hot! Their fridge does not work. They don't even offer a cup of ice. The staff seems to be on their own agenda and not there to work. When people do show up they look kinda mad that they have to work. I have yet to find a great place for Chinese food (that delivers) and I always find myself coming here. Although they do deliver I recommend going in person. I've noticed they tend to serve slightly bigger portions if you are there than if you have them deliver. Their 3 entree special is fairly priced and it comes with a side order of soup.
