Rare Steak and Well Done Steak Noodle Soup (Ph Ti Chn)
    April P.

Love coming to Saigon star for a quick and easy dinner in my neighborhood. I've ate here many times and the food and service are both always consistent. The pho broth is well flavored, not too fatty or greasy, the noodles are always cooked perfectly and they do not hold back when it comes to the serving of meat in your bowl. The ambiance is really cute and homey as well. There's always many people eating but it's never packed/never has a wait. There servers are always so sweet. They come by to check on you and as soon as your water is empty they bc old around with a new one.

We came on a Friday around 5:30 pm and were seated promptly. Clean and super spacious inside with lots of tables and cute Valentine's Day decorations! I got the house special combo crispy egg noodles, which is one of my usuals at Viet restaurants. It was tasty, crispy, loaded with toppings and the sauce was hot and nicely savory. Service was pretty quick and attentive.

Cute homey neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant! Came on a Friday dinner around 5:30PM and it wasn't too busy but more people came in as we ate. I got the sizzling steak (Bo luc lac) and it came out sizzling hot! The steak was tender and I liked the flavor and onions, but it was a small portion for the price and I wish it included some more veggies like bell peppers. I also didn't like the sauce on the salad. It was nicely decorated for Valentine's Day and there were string lights and decorations on the walls. Service was fast and decent. I would come back to try their other dishes!

My first time here was to go just spring rolls and Thai tea. This is my first time for dine-in. There's plenty of seating and I love that There's a big parking lot. The menu is also really big. I got the number 1 pho Which was also good, however, it did seem like there was not that much meat. I did like the broth. My boyfriend got the sizzling fish fillet. He liked it, I'm not sure if it's turmeric or some other kind of spice on it. The Thai teas were good just a little bit on the sweeter side . Service was good. The man who helped us was kind of quiet, but he was polite. Overall, I would come back to try other dishes. If this is your first visit here, check in on Yelp to get 10% off.

Came here for dinner on a Monday evening and it wasn't busy, so we were seated right away. The place was clean and the service was excellent from start to finish. I ordered the Vegetable Delight with chicken, and it was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly.

Visited 5/17/2025 This is one of the best Vietnamese Restaurants I've been to. Nice setting with lots of indoor seating and Easy For San Diego lots of free parking. The owner and staff are Top Notch. Great Menu with great Recipes. Family Run great service. Food was original Family recipes. I give it Five Stars for a job well done by the Owner Haley Ngoc. Worth a visit.

I love this place. Staff are always polite and service is always quick. Every dish we've ever gotten has been delicious! Great date night or casual hang out with friends.

$6.50 coffee, Smaller than any coffee I've been served at any coffee shop or restaurant, and more expensive than.

Okay service, not okay food. First I walked in and was ignored when I waited by the "please wait to be seated" sign. After I was seated the service was very friendly. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee that was $6.50, and the size of it was ridiculous. It was so small it might as well have been a shot of coffee. I also ordered pho and it came in the smallest size of pho I have ever had in a restaurant. There was no choice of size, the broth was very bland, and it almost tasted burnt. I try a LOT of Pho restaurants in SD area and this is by far the worst, and there are plenty that charge less, are in better areas, and provide much bigger portions.

Double delight (egg rool inside and spring roll). Would've been better if the egg roll was centered instead of off to the side.

Great service. Cute atmosphere. Delicious food. My boyfriend is super picky and he loved it. Well definitely be back.

My spoiled tongue might hold vietnamese cuisine to a higher standard because I know what I should expect. The was not it. The pork spring rolls flavors were a little off. It tasted more Americanized. I also ordered bun bo hue, &I was a little sad. The broth wasn't as deep&hearty like it should be. It was more of the watery bone broth used for pho. I'm not sure if I would come back, but it was okay, nothing to rave about.

A restaurant we wanted to go to for dinner nearby was closed but Saigon Star saved the day! Everything we ordered was perfect in every way. The prices were also amazing and service was fast and friendly. My favorite thing was the salt and pepper wings! I will definitely be back.

The restaurant has so much character, with dim lighting and walls covered in signatures from past diners that make you feel a real sense of community. Eric and his wife really make the restaurant what it is. They are kind, generous, and genuinely good people who care about their customers. You can see the hard work and heart they put into the food; they are so warm and it makes you feel like you're getting to know them. It's a great spot for mixed groups of vegans and meat-eaters, and I noticed a lot of older families and couples there as well--in my opinion, it would make a great date spot. The food is incredibly thoughtful in a way that feels very personal. We started with a complimentary marinated tofu salad with a unique beet sauce, and the marinated tofu itself was excellent--honestly the best I've had in a while. I was told it's actually hand-made in-house, and you can really taste that quality. They also gave us fried tofu which was a hit with my friends. Eric was even kind enough to give us extra tofu to take home, and following his recommendation, my mother used it to make a fish soup the next day that was delicious. I ordered a modified pork tonkatsu rice noodle soup, and it had a warm, nurturing quality that made me feel right at home. It's a great fusion spot, and because there is so much soul in the food, it isn't monotonous at all. Eric was so attentive that he even brought me extra broth when he noticed my noodles had soaked it all up. They even provided complimentary ice cream and a glutinous rice dish at the end. You go here because you want to feel nurtured and eat food that is good for your body and your soul, and the cherry on top is getting to support such good people. I definitely want to come back when I'm in town.

It's in a plaza with a ton of other restaurants, so just know parking can be a little chaotic. I went on a Wednesday around 5:30PM and still found parking pretty easily, but I can see it getting rough later. The place itself is on the smaller side, but they fit a good amount of seating. Every time I pass by it never looks super packed and even this time it wasn't that busy. I ordered ahead through their website, which was smooth, but when I walked in the cashier didn't see my order at first. I showed her my confirmation text, she checked with the kitchen and let me know it was still being prepared. She was super kind about it, so no issue there. I sat and waited and it ended up being around 20 minutes, which felt a little long for just two items, but not terrible. There was also a moment where a group came in and no one was at the front, so they asked me how ordering worked. We both just assumed you scan the QR code at the table and order from there, which probably explains why there isn't always someone upfront. A little confusing at first, but it is what it is. Once my food was ready, it was packaged really nicely. I had about a 25 minute drive home and everything stayed warm, which is honestly the best part about good takeout. Popcorn Chicken ($9.50) This might be the best popcorn chicken I've had in San Diego, especially for the price. You get big pieces, like actual chicken, not just fried coating. The seasoning is kind of addicting, a little sweet, a little salty, savory, with a slight kick. Super fragrant too with green onions mixed in. The sauce tasted like a cilantro jalapeño crema, almost taco vibes, which sounds random but it worked really well. And the shredded cabbage at the bottom soaking up all that extra seasoning... so good. Only thing is I wish some pieces were a little crispier and more golden, but still really really solid. Spicy Shrimp Wontons (8 pcs, $10.80) These come in a soy, vinegar, chili oil sauce that's super balanced. The wontons themselves are a bit smaller and don't have a ton of filling, so price-wise it's a little eh. But the sauce carries. After sitting in it during my drive home, I thought it would be too salty, but it actually soaked in perfectly. The color got darker and richer and the flavor still stayed balanced. Overall, this place is honestly solid. The menu isn't huge, more focused on noodles, dumplings, and apps, but based on what I had, they do it well. I'll definitely be back to try more, but that popcorn chicken alone is already enough reason to come back.

Our stand outs were the honey walnut shrimp and the green beans. Both were crisp and cooked so fresh! We had plenty to go after because they did provide some nice sized portions! The restaurant itself is very vibey and over the top, as to be expected, but way smaller than I expected. Definitely make a reservation. I was surprised by the tall ceilings; this place is not large in square footage but it doesn't feel cramped in any way. We opted for the online menu as it included pictures, though not on every item. Very reasonable prices for generous portions. Every dish was a winner, though some better than others in the minute details. The Hainanese Chicken Rice was tender and rich that the ginger sauce cut through, but the color was strikingly yellow. The Rotisserie Chicken Salad offered a welcome sight of veggies, though the chicken itself tasted like that straight from Costco. The Scallion Pancake was crispy on the edges, doughy in the center, and you only get one per order. The Shitake Mushroom Minced Pork had no drawbacks, and would come back just for this. Combining familiar flavors and spices, adding roasted vegetables and rice made this a complete meal! We were unbothered by the service staff the entire time until asking for the check, strange as we were the only two in the restaurant. We weren't given any paper menus and were told to place our orders directly from the QR code. While the system was efficient, it wasn't as convenient for everyone at the table. Payment was done only at the front cashier. The dumplings were definitely made to order, and they took quite some time to come out. However, the one fried dish we ordered came out almost immediately. Each table had soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil. We had ordered soup dumplings and I wish we were also given spoons. *Honey Walnut Shrimp: came on a bed of steamed broccoli. The shrimp were humongous, and the batter was just as large. The shrimp had good bounciness, but the batter was so thick it was difficult to taste the sauce. The sauce also wasn't evenly distributed, so some bites were just fried shrimp. I wouldn't get this again as the shrimp was overwhelmed by the batter and the walnuts were sparse. *Pork And Cabbage Dumplings: we got them fried for $1 more. These had juicy filling and each dumpling had a stellar crust. The wrapper could have been a tad thinner, but these were still filling and flavorful. *Xiao Long Bao: we ordered two kinds, regular pork and crab. The pork was superior in both flavor and soup. The crab dumplings were unfortunately drier, and there wasn't much seafood flavor. However, I was satisfied with the thickness of the dumpling skin. *Szcheuan Spicy Wontons: these had a more subtle numbing spice than other renditions, with more oil. The skin was the thinnest of all the dishes, and my entire party complimented it. The pork filling was dense and chewy. Overall, the dumplings were decent and affordable. The cost of the dumplings easily fed my entire party, and especially in comparison to the rising costs of Chinese dishes, it was refreshing to see hefty portions and solid flavors. I would opt for takeout next time, as the dine-in experience is minimalistic.
