My friends and I would always come here for our Chinese food fix, and we were NEVER disappointed. I always get some kind of Chow Mein (usually House Special with all kinds of meats) as it is by far the best I have ever tried. It's got amazing flavor, and the portions are big! Always leave full on one order, and It's only like $7-8, I think. I never really tried the other dishes they ordered, by I've heard they're delicious as well. I guess it's one of very few places in the area with good General Tso's chicken from what my friend says. Pleasantly surprised by this place! We came here since it was just around the corner of our hotel (Casa Munras). The moment we sat down, we already had a steaming pot of tea in front of us and greeted with a warm smile from our waitress. We came here around 8pm and it was pretty busy for being a Saturday night. We ordered hot and sour soup, potstickers, and the Kung Pow Chicken. Everything was out in 5 minutes. Pipping hot and tasty, this meal really hit the spot. The hot and sour soup though... SOOOOOO GOOOODDDD!!! I'm craving it right now! The staff here are very friendly and quick to help you with anything. Looked at past reviews and there is a clear misunderstanding. The rule is to review according to prices. China Garden is not pretending to be elite Cuisine. They are a family-friendly place with a a host of great service folks. We arrived with 5 and added 3 more to our party. We were crazy with our order but they got it PERFECT!!! Everything was fresh made (you can see the cooking staff - bonus) and served within 15-20 min. This place was packed so this was no small achievement... We had 4 small kiddos to boot. Lots of places shudder when we show up. But they offered nothing but personalized service and loved our kids... You can tell the difference between "tolerating" kids versus enjoying them... They loved them... That goes a long way for me. They even apologized for being out of silver wrapped chicken... They sold out because people loved it... And they apologized an hour after we ordered... These people are down to earth and a pleasure to dine with. read more

Has great window seats. We got the crab rangoons and were surprised by getting nine of them. We also tried the beef and broccoli which was standard, but also go the General Tso's chicken which was very good. It was white meat and a lighter sauce than typical. Why did it take me 21 years to try China Garden, one of the few high profile Chinese Restaurants in the area? Only because a friend told me it was rat crap on a plate and to avoid it like the plague. So I did. Until today when two other Asian places nearby were closed and we were hangry. China Garden is a solid, respectable, traditional Chinese restaurant with a decent lunch menu, a clean dining room, and great service. I had an above average Sechhuan Beef and my son had a Chow Fun Beef. Both good and plentiful. The reasons for 4 stars rather than 5 is (1) no included soup or salad with the lunch menu, (2) wet booth seat that I had to wipe down myself, and (3) requested chopstix were handed to me wet. Our meals did not give us any MSG reactions later and there was zero sign of any historic ratcrapocity as my friend had suggested. The hot tea was a standard uninteresting teabag in warm water - a decent loose jasmine tea in hot water would go a long way. But overall, finally impressed! read more

This is my go to Chinese spot in the area. Good low key spot, with very reasonable prices and solid Chinese fare. I would probably give it 4 stars, but the owner is incredibly sweet and attentive to her customers, earning the extra rating. I will come in with a group of folks every now and then, and she has all of our orders memorized. If you want Chinese that is closest to "NYC" Chinese food go to Tommy's Wok in Carmel. They are the BEST Chinese food in the are I really wanted to go there last night but my husband didn't want to leave the house. First, the good part--- The decor was kitschy Chinese. At lunch time, this translated to cute and fun with tons of windows for people watching. The parking lot is huge. The food came out lightening fast and was priced appropriately for this area! Now, the not-so-good part--- I had Wor Won Ton Soup. The broth was the same broth used for Egg Drop Soup. There were two small overcooked shrimps, no beef, and no barbecued pork. There was lots of nice lean, tender chicken breast slices and the veges were attractive and not overcooked. The won tons were NOT house-made. This I know for a fact as I make regular pilgrimages to 99 Ranch Market in Milpitas for frozen soup won tons. The won tons I buy at 99 Ranch Market are full of discrete pieces of meat, ginger, green onion, Chinese leeks, and shrimp. The won tons I ate here were filled with a meat paste. Yuck! We got the chicken chow mein, broccoli beef and white rice, and everything was so good! Vegans! That is a place to go. Ask them for a large order of sautéed bean sprouts with garlic. Tell the waiter the chef always makes it provided he has sprouts. Ask if they have bok joy and ask for sautéed bok joy with garlic. Another one is Ma Po tofu without meat and very little fat. These three items with steamed rice make a delicious and healthy meal for two of us. Their sister restaurant China House can usually provide the same. The service is decent most of the time unless they are overwhelmed with a sudden influx of tourists or military in one or the other location. China Garden also has excellent cha chang mien upon request (except on one day when the chef making it is off). That dish is not listed on the menu. 2018: we are back in the area and stopped in tonight. This place never disappoints! The honey walnut shrimp was excellent, the beef Szechwan was excellent, the fried rice, chow menu & egg rolls were excellent. Owners are always pleasant and the place is perfect for a casual dinner. This was our third try to find a decent Chinese restaurant in Monterey while vacationing. The location seemed more suited for lunch business, but as it was within walking distance of our motel, we gave it a try. The main dish portions were smaller than average, and my wife commented that it seemed like the orange chicken was just battered and fried, then placed in an orange sauce. So all the chicken dishes are probably cooked the same, just the sauce switched out. This made for a quick delivery of our food, but not an overly flavorful dish. Might be worth it for a lunch trip, it looked like the menu had some lunch specials, but we definitely won't be back for dinner. read more

I try not to write bad reviews because I work in concessions and am very understanding but man, this place is terrible. First off, customer service was absolutely horrible. They were rushing me and whenever I'd ask a question, the lady would get super frustrated then start talking to everyone around her in Chinese. Secondly, it's too expensive. I bought sweet and shower shrimp for $11.95 and it doesn't even come with rice! You have to buy that separately. I ended up paying $15.00 for barely any food. Last but not least, the food tasted terrible! I had to add so much salt and pepper for it to even remotely have any flavor! I ended up eating cold left-overs that tasted better than the food... Long story short, don't waste your money. You're better off at Panda Express or that Chinese Gourmet restaurant at the Del Monte Center. read more

We got the veggie chow mein , house fried rice, sesame chicken and Mongolian beef. Everything was delicious! And tons of leftovers. It is hard to find good Ma Po Tofu in the US. What I had here was pretty good. They even use the Sichuan peppers that are a bit numbing, like what you find in the Sichuan province. The eggs rolls were pretty good as well. I enjoyed the meal. read more

This is my local Chinese restaurant near me and im glad. Not only is the food delicious, but amazing service. I had food delivered to my house today and i apparently was mistaken on what i had order. I assume wontons always came with cream cheese, they don't. When i called the restaurant and the delivery man had left to "complain" the woman had let me know i had ordered the wrong app and offered to give me the dish i originally thought i was getting at no cost. 15 minutes later i received the food.
