The boba drinks are delicious, especially the taro. The pho soup is really good and fresh. Always nice to get take-out.

I'm a faithful customer to this restaurant. They have the largest selection of bobas then most other places, and the bobas aren't expensive like other places are. You can get a large boba for about $3.50, where as other places will charge up to $5 or more. I usually get the taro boba when I go, but I've gotten coffee before, which I would recommend. I've been to a couple of places in Long Beach and Artesia that serve pho, and for some reason, I REALLY like China Star's above all. I usually get the Rare Steak Pho (#4), small, of course. The big pho is WAY too big for a mortal human to eat to completion. They also give you all of the fixings: Thai basil, bean sprouts, chile slices, and lime. The best boba place I have ever had. I go specifically for the boba drink. They have tons of options. I get the small ice coffee with boba. It's a good price and is amazing!! The people are friendly also. The restaraunt is always crowded. I've gotten the food on a few occasions. It's typical for carry out Chinese food...not fine dining, but quick and reasonable. I haven't tried a lot of the tea bar, but what I have had is fine. On the good side of average. However, the food is superb for Chinese fast food. Tastes fine, and is cheap cheap CHEAP. Comparing this place to fast food places such as Yummi (city of el monte), Panda Express, and etc., this place is still disgusting. I order the orange chicken with chow mien and the orange chicken taste as if the cook put too much orange peel as an ingredient. Chow mien was tasteless. I believe the owner of this place bought the cheapest product they can find such as packets to cook their food. I had to throw away the food because I could not take another bite. We eat here about twice a month. We live within walking distance and so parking isn't a problem for us. We order out from here when we have guests. You cannot beat the price for the amount of food and I enjoy the taste. My kids love it and they tend to be rather picky. I love their chow mein. read more

I came here for the second time because I was in the neighborhood . The first time I came here was over a year ago, and I liked the food, food was not all that bad . However..... today just ruin my experience forever........... Today when I came to the place, I was greeted by them. They were ok. My sister and I ordered a Chinese food combo with 3 sides and a large bowl of pho. The total of all this was $20.00 even. I was kind of a bit thrown off when the cashier guy said it was 20 dollars flat. In my mind I was thinking how could a three side combo and a bowl of pho come out to be 20 dollars flat? Okay guys, I'm not stupid, I calculated in mind already how much I would of spend for the food. I guess when he saw me, he thinks that he can take advantage of my money? But boy! You must be kidding! Heck no!!! Anyways, I gave him my $20.00 to test him out and he didn't give me my receipt... so I went to the table (which was right in front of the cashier). I was thinking in my mind, this cannot be 20 bucks even. While thinking in my head, I overheard some whispers and laughing behind the food counter... I clearly over heard the guy chatting with the other girl talking about me (loudly) that I gave him a twenty. That's when I knew my instincts were right. I heard them two giggling, so I went up back to the counter and asked for my receipt the guy said it was actually $20.17, but he only charged me 20 dollars. I said to him I still need my receipt because this is not my money. (It actually was my money but I got fed up with their giggling and talking thinking that I'm stupid!) but even if I didn't hear these two idiots talking about me I would've still ask for my receipt because I wanted to know how much is the total because this food ain't suppose to be 20. It is not even worth 20, in my opinion!!! I can tell the guy was a bit nervous when I asked for the receipt because he know he did me wrong. So then he finally printed out the receipt and guess what people????? It was actually $16.90. After he printed out the receipt he said, "sorry I forgot to give you change" yeaaah right!?!? He didn't even want to give me change in the first place, he said it was 20 dollars even!!!! After this incident I didn't want to eat their food, i feel very disgusted. Im thinking to myself do they do this to other people as well!! I feel like I've been played by these two people !! How could they even treat their customers like that. Being an Asian person myself, I'm very humiliated and embarrassed by what they did. Who would do such a thing! I'm Cambodian myself and I know they are Chinese/Cambodian too! It makes them look so greedy and money hungry! And to even laugh about it, that is very selfish and very disrespectful to do! C'mon people it's almost the holidays why are you treating other people like this? If you want tip from your customers, you need to earn it. And when you over charging the food, thinking your customers are stupid bring out the ugliness and greediness in you! And when you joke and laughed at your customers it shows how disrespectful you are. So, guess what else happen while I was there? The young girl that works there was also helping out another customer (man) and she said the price of his total already, and then when the man brought out his money she said another price.. the man was questioning her that she said something else just now... okay? Does she know how to do math ? Does anyone that works there knows how to count change ? It seems to me like she don't and the guy don't!! It is basic math, like elementary. Conveniently located near the California State University Long Beach campus, this small Chinese fast food joint is a great place for low budgeted college students or those who want Chinese that is better than Panda Express. The menu may not be too large, but there is enough variety to satisfy anyone. In the front lines, there's the selection of food for the normal take out, most popular being Orange Chicken, and Cha Siu Pork (bar-be-qued pork). However they also serve Soups, and of course Pho (Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup). Having been there a majority of my saturdays/sundays while I was dorming at CSULB, I have experienced many of their selection. The orange chicken is not the best around (a bit too soggy for my taste) and the pho is not the top either. However, the soups, rice, curry chicken, drinks, and service is really good. They're friendly, fast and funny. Definitely go to this place if you crave Chinese food. Plus the cheese wontons are addicting. Unhealthy but really good. read more

i grew up down the street from this place so it's saved my life and my family's during those "emergency meals" where no one cooked, everyone is tired and we're all starved but don't want to suffer drive-thru. the food is average 'americanized' chinese food and their specials are priced right. lunch combos are $4.99 and include one item (favorite is spicy tofu eggplant), chowmein and rice combo, an egg roll, and a drink. dinners are a little more but you get an extra item. they also serve pho! when i wasn't a veg, i used to get this soup when i didn't want to drive to cerritos or westminster - esp. on rainy days! from what i can remember it's average, but it's the closest pho to where i am in LB. oh and above all, this place serves BROWN RICE! but you have to ask for it cuz they don't advertise it in the food trays.they also have boba ... it's not the highest of quality, but some of tastes good. oh, and they FINALLY take credit card. always a life saver. read more

While the BBQ pork was just average or slightly below average the tofu and eggplant was horrible. i've had it at multiple places, including Panda Express, and all of them were better. I'm missing a good neighborhood Chinese place in east/los altos Long Beach. This evening we tried this place. They seemed to have a good number of customers coming and in out mostly for take out. To me it was mediocre and bland. The noodles and fried rice had little flavor. The orange chicken didn't have anything to recommend it. The mushroom chicken was the best of the dish, but still so so. DH thought the orange chicken tasted as though it was reheated even though they had just refilled the dish. First and last time for us. I'm still missing a good Chinese take-out. This "food" contains calories, maybe some protein, and lots of salt. Eat here if you are truly incapable of spending $8 on something a little more established. This is a place for those who really just need to eat to keep from dying. The pho is from God knows where. The broth was not home made, and if it was it was very old. Anything "cooked to order" is basically raw onions stir fried with some salt sauce concoction, with dry ass noodles and something that resembles beef boiled down to chewy mush. I swing by China Star Express at least once a week. I'm always in a hurry, either to school or to/back to work, so this place is really convenient since the food is already in a tray, and all I have to do is point and choose what you want. Convenient? Yes. Good? Not necessarily. The taste of a lot of their dishes are off a bit, such as their tofu or their curry. The curry tastes more like Vietnamese/Thai curry with a bit of coconut milk. And since they have pho as well, it can be assumed that the owner or chef has more of a background in Vietnamese food instead of Chinese food. So "CHINA" star express is kind of misleading. It should be alled "Vietnamese Star Express". Their meat quality is pretty bad. The chicken in most of their dishes are fatty, and there's quite a bit of cartilage. I can't stand cartilage. I just imagine chewing on ears or nose...eck. Don't expect Panda Express fast food here. As for the pho, that's one of the main dish I order here. But like what others have posted, there's not a lot of taste. I like to pour sriracha sause on mine, but they water down their sriracha so it tastes kind of funny. A couple of times the noodles were not completely cooked so they were just clumped into a bundle and I had to break it apart with my chopsticks. Their boba is okay. Best time to go is at least an hour after opening so they have a new batch of boba, otherwise you get yesterday's leftovers which are already stiff and not chewy. If their new batch isn't ready yet, they usually ask you if you would still like yesterday's boba. That's considerate of them. The thing I dislike most about this place is the attitude of the employees. There's like 3 women who work in the front. Many times they don't even acknowledge that you're there, even if you're standing right in front of them. There's no, "I'll be right w/ you", or "one moment please." They just continue to do what they're doing until they want to help you. They also look like they are PMSing 24/7, like they have a problem with you. Maybe they just hate being there, but they should never take it out on the customers. Several times I just want to tell them to cancel my order because their attitude just irritates me. Today I got the kung pao chicken. I don't eat peanuts so I asked if she could avoid scooping up the peanuts. She just gave me the stank eye. Today will be my last visit to China Star. I have been going there for over 18 years and the service has never been the greatest (the workers never smile and are never friendly), but it's convenient and the food is decent. This evening, 6pm I had to wait 10 minutes for some orange chicken (ok, no problem), the problem is that I waited along with a man who was ahead of me and we were both helped by a young male server. When the orange chicken came out, the young male server assisted the man ahead of me first (to be expected), but did not acknowledge me to be helped by any of the other female servers (since i waited, i should have been helped). By this time other people came in and finally, after three people later, I was served by a young lady and it was time to pay. The male server was cashiering at the checkout and I told him (very calmly) that I waited for the orange chicken and that he should have had one of the young ladies help me next, and that it was bad customer service (I did not want to make a scene, I am not that type of person and I am not a complainer). All he said was "oh" with a dorky look on his face and asked for my payment; I almost left the food sitting on the counter and walk out but I am not that type of person even though I was very upset. I will never go back, the food is not THAT great, and this is the third strike, the last straw. The first strike was when my daughter had ants in her Pho noodles a couple of years ago, it took us a long time to go back; the second time was when i ordered Pho and it was sour and smelled bad. The boba is not good at all, I get my boba from "Cha for Tea" in Bixby Village off of 7th street, where the food is much better and so is the service. Two thumbs down for China Star. read more
