I live right in the line of Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights neighborhoods and have tried a handful of carry outs in both 'hoods. As a Chinese food snob, I can vouch for China Town Carryout being one of the best places in DC to get egg food young. My partner prefers general tso's chicken which I'm not a huge fan of. Places like China Town Carry Out are institutions in DC. I have seen entire families literally survive off of eating nowhere except places like this. To me nothing says, the real DC like a dirty, little Chinese/American carry out where more than likely you'll be ordering through a bulletproof glass. China Town Carry Out doesn't have the bulletproof glass but you do have to order through an opening in a glass wall above a counter. What's not to like about this place, the location is ideal for me, the prices are definitely on the cheap side and they even have this nice old Asian woman who actually speaks Spanish, I mean her Spanish is pretty good and I appreciate the fact that she can speak Spanish in an area with a pretty big Spanish speaking customer base. How the Chinese food here is I have no idea, just like many other similar carry outs, I would never actually go there for Chinese food, if I want good Chinese food there is a long list of restaurants that are guaranteed to have better authentic Chinese food. No to me these places are all about one thing, Chicken Wings and French fries and most importantly Mumbo Sauce. China Town Carry Out has some of the best Mumbo Sauce in this area of DC, is it the best in DC? No but it is the best in the area closes to my house. Don't know what Mumbo Sauce is, well don't ask me because neither do I, in fact I'm not sure anybody on earth could tell you exactly what it is or what genius had the brilliant idea to invent it and make it a staple in the DC community. But go into China Town Carry Out and ask for four chicken wing and French fries. Ask them to put salt, pepper, ketchup and Mumbo sauce on the fries and mumbo sauce on the chicken and enjoy yourself a delicious meal. I'm so confident you'll like it I'll give you a money back guarantee, if you order that and don't like it and can track me down I'll give you the amount you paid for it back. About the only negative thing I can say about China Town Carry Out, is that their prices are always changing. They have a menu in the store with all the foods they serve and the price of each item but good luck getting them to agree to that price, China Town like many other carry outs have prices that are always subject to change. China Town will always be my go to spot, when I just need some quick food and don't want to be bothered with making my own meal, going to a real restaurant or settling for some other form of fast food. This food picture I have The Sweet & Sour Shrimp and the sauce wasn't separate like at McDonald's. My Chinese joint - they're so old school they don't deliver nor do they have a web presence. What's cool about them is that you can get a solid chicken dinner for about 4 bucks (it used to be 3 but oh well.) portions are generous and the service is fast, also they speak Spanish more fluently than most people who've actually taken Spanish in school. Now my qualms- they don't have crab Rangoon and they'd not like old school Cantonese good. I know I'm being picky but I grew up in the industry and want a little wok hei in my noodles. Too much sauce, too much sugar, not enough fire. Not that most people will notice. But hey, I can't complain. I've been trying to find a nearby good Chinese take out spot - and this place FAR EXCEEDS a simple good. The staff were so so so friendly, the portions were large, and the flavors...impeccable. Yup. I definitely recommend the place. Especially for their fried chicken. 2 pieces with fried rice is $3.25. (For dinner!!!) It's also really really really good, and you get 2 big pieces. I think I eat their friend chicken at least 1x a week. Please don't hold me accountable if you find that any of their other offerings are exactly what you think you would get from any one of the many carryouts in the city. But as for those wings, they were totally NOT what I expected to find from a carryout, let alone one named China Town Carryout. But after a nice afternoon of sucking it up on the softball field, several friends and I thought about rewarding ourselves with some good, cheap eats. Now I never would have thought about getting fried chicken wings from a Chinese place, but I'm glad my friend suggested it, even going so far as to call and pre-order our wings for us. Unlike other fast food chains, this chicken is not oily at all. In fact, the skin is extremely crispy and the meat surprisingly juicy and flavorful. Which in my book is the perfect combination of solid fried chicken (anything). And after only dropping about $20 on a dozen wings (decent sized too) and an order of Singapore noodles, I have forever changed my tune on carryouts. Maybe not adding them to my must eat list, but definitely not brushing past them without even a thought. read more

To judge a Chinese carry-out place, one needs to look at 1) price, 2) food quality, and 3) speed. China Town meets all three with some caveats. This is not a high-end Chinese restaurant, nor is it authentic. However the lunch specials and many of the combos are priced very reasonable. It has some underrated dishes such as string bean with chicken and coconut shrimp. And best of all, you'll always see people crawling in and out of that place because it stays busy throughout the day. A few tips: - order the lunch specials and combos for the best value - place an order before you go pick up, otherwise you might have to wait a while - don't eat there unless you're in a hurry, there's only 2-3 small tables - if you get entrees or egg foo young, you get a good portion size of rice - friendly staff members there who can speak English, Spanish and Cantonese/Mandarin - if you want something breaded/fried, skip the general tso, sesame and sweet and sour, and just go for the chicken wings. My husband and I started getting carry out here recently, after generally getting last minute dinner from Mayflower. The other reviewers are right; the owners are very nice, the food is generally quite good, and everything is affordable. We generally get General tso's tofu, shrimp lo mein, and kung pao shrimp. A single dish could last an average eater 2-3 meals. The shrimp dishes are *packed* with shrimp, and the tofu is always nicely prepared. Can't speak to other items on the menu other than the string beans, which weren't that great. Would not encourage you to dine in; definitely a carry-out kind of place. That aside, really happy to have a reliable, fast, convenient, and tasty carry-out option in the neighborhood. PS. They always give us a can of soda, but not sure why. :) read more

Great, affordable place to pick up a quick lunch in Mt. Pleasant. The staff is very friendly. This is definitely a mom and pop type restaurant. This place is a weekly lunchtime staple. The portions are large enough that an order will get you two lunches for about $5 a piece. The orange tofu is very solid, and the broccoli stays nice and crispy even as leftovers. The vegetarian spring rolls are different than most places - there are mushrooms in them. Try them with the mustard. A word on the ingredients: I've been there when they received a delivery. Good ole Chinese takeout joint. No frills, just good food. I personally got the Chicken&Rice Soup, the Wonton Soup, and the Beef with Snowpeas with added veggies.
