The food was fresh, portions were larger than I anticipated, prices were fair, and people enjoyed especially the pineapple shrimp. The food was hot and fresh. They had many choices. Almost too many! I think they had something for everyone. Okay loooooook y'all. It's a Chinese food buffet. But let me tell you something. It's pretty dang good!! My husband's side of the family has been coming here for years. Somebody graduates, Chinatown, funeral, Chinatown. It is what it is. The service here is impeccable!! Our drinks stayed full, plates were picked up quickly, napkins were plentiful, I was quite impressed!! The restaurant itself is pretty old but they keep it sparkly clean!! You could see your reflection in the floors, plus plenty of wall TVs around if you need to catch up on the news. So many different choices including: sesame chicken, broccoli beef, salt n pepper shrimp, pizza, salad, all the noooooodles, fried rice, soup(s), and a stir fry area. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because of the sushi area. Sushi is all rice and the rolls fall apart when you try to eat it. But the buffet itself was delicious!! I also appreciate that they have specials deals during different hours. We went as a big group so got one person in free! That was cool. And if you haven't heard of the app TOO GOOD TO GO, download it right meow. Love restaurants that participate and help out with food waste. This was my first time here but I will go back next time I'm in Denton. They offer a buffet and a menu option. I ordered from the menu option and got my food to go. I ordered the combination lo mein combination, the mushrooms in garlic butter sauce, a side of sauteed green beans and onions, and I attempted to order General Tso chicken. The person taking my order was very nice and she showed me the to go menu but I had already looked up what I wanted online. There was no one else in line so I was able to immediately order my to go items. They were able to get my order together quickly, it took about 15 minutes. I was taking food to my friend who is in the hospital. When I opened the bag, my mushrooms were correct. My lo mein was correct. My green beans were correct. But unfortunately they gave me a different type of chicken than what I ordered and it was for the person who was in the hospital. That is the reason that I gave them a 4, since one of my orders was wrong. Thankfully, my friend still really enjoyed the meal, considering. I do have to say, they have a really generous portion sizes, reasonable prices, and the food was really good. read more

I and my family have eaten at Chinatown Cafe in Denton for over 20 years. There have been changes, but overall, we've found consistently good Chinese food. BUT when I went last night, it was obvious that it had changed management. Not a Chinese person in sight, and the food was mostly inedible. The Sesame Chicken was actually pork, the shrimp were overcooked, mushy and filthy - gross. Some were actually black. Some of the fruit had spoiled, the eggrolls were not sufficiently cooked and doughy inside. The sushi was an embarrassment - not made by a sushi chef - falling apart, nasty looking and tasteless. The beef and broccoli had very little beef in it and the broccoli had died a week previously. Many of the hot, stir-fry dishes had a dried coating on them. There were many "standard" dishes that simply were either not made properly or were unrecognizable. Such a shame. I also noticed quite a lot of health code violations, and though probably not a violation, the handwritten signs over the buffet trays often had nothing to do with what was presented. I expect that they are trying to cut corners and expenses, but it's a shame. I expected that on New Years Eve, around 7 pm it would be busy but there were very few customers. I won't go back. I am very thankful that I have not experienced any bad effects, other than wasting $$. It reminded me of gas-station food. I and my family agreed that the wait staff was top-notch. read more

Daughter wanted to check out a Chinese buffet in the area so we wound up at Chinatown Cafe. The service was friendly, tables clean, plates cleared regularly. The different offerings were refreshed regularly as well. The steamed dumplings seemed to dry out and harden on the edges though I'm not sure how that can be overcome in a buffet setting. The steamed rice looked like it had been in the cooker for a while but it was ok after I piled the green beans and mushroom chicken on top. The sesame balls were delicious. They had a nice crunch and chewiness to it and the filling was slightly sweet. The mussels and clams had good flavor, maybe a tad overcooked but that's not surprising for a buffet. The macaroni salad was a bit bland but the pasta salad was ok. They had regular fried rice and chicken fried rice but I didn't sample either, although they looked good. We went on the weekend an hour after open and all of the meats were colder than room temperature. It didn't help the food that it was freezing inside. I just want my hot food hot at a buffet. I don't mind if it's that cold if I can reheat it myself but I don't feel comfortable asking my server to microwave it every time I grab a new plate. My friend had nothing but good things to say about this place when she initially suggested it. We arrive around an hour before closing, not knowing it was closing so soon. The buffet was not well kept, and was mediocre tasting at best. But; that's probably because it was so close to closing. That's not really the issue we ran into because a man, who I assume was the manager, offered to put some new food on the buffet before they closed. It was very nice of him. My issue came with the waitress we had. First off, we had ordered drinks and my friend ordered a soda and water. She didn't receive the soda. So when a lady, who we assumed was our waitress, came up asking for our condiments bottles she(my friend) politely asked if the waitress could get her the soda. This lady looked at her like she had two heads! My friend felt so bad cause she was like 'I thought she was our waitress!' She came back and placed down the soda and was like 'You were ordering two sodas.' Which we confirmed. I really thought that was a strange question to ask since it was stated by my friend that she had also ordered a soda along with a water. Later, about 30 minutes before close, literally right after the male manager(?) came up to offer us to make more food before they shut the kitchen down, the lady came up and asked the same thing. Then, in a very short manner, said that they were closing soon. It made both my friend and I uncomfortable. She kept checking on us every couple minutes (like suddenly she cared that we were her table) till I asked for a bill, paid, and left. I have to tell you that it was SUCH an unpleasant experience to feel like we needed to rush out of there so quickly. Leaving, my friend apologized to me and was like 'I swear it's never been THIS bad before.' I'm not sure I'll return, if only to avoid getting that same waitress. read more

Went with two of my best friends the food looked like it stayed out way too long. We couldn't eat even of the food!I had to spit out into a napkins 2 times. The chow mein noodles were old and the cabbage was so rubbery and some reason had a very fishy taste to it. The meats are practically gelatin like from all of the MSG. The buffet items swim in sauce that glistens from their gooey consistency. . Notes: Food ordered was requested to be without flour or soy sauce due to celiac. Later in the evening we suffered severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. It is unknown if it was due to gluten poisoning or food poisoning but since this was our only meal of the day either one had to be from this restaurant. read more
