I understand the hype around it. The galbijjim is incredible and reminiscent of a comfort meal, the bibimbap is pretty standard, and the bossam was swell. Took my non-Korean friends and they were in awe! Cheers!

The best tofu stew I've ever had!! The first time I came here, I came back the same day for dinner! Delicious! I really like the flavoring of their tofu, especially in the small dish. It tastes sweet and the texture is just right. The tofu in the stew is so soft and fluffy. The soup flavor is also simply delicious! They have a lunch special, where you get a small protein (e.g. bulgogi) and a small stew for $20. Overall, I think it's pretty good price! Cant wait to come back aga

Waited for dinner here on a weekday evening, was quoted 45min to an hour but ended up waiting nearly 1.5 hours instead. It was overall good, but I was expecting a bit more given all the hype and the wait time. Favorites dishes were the banchan and the shrimp pancakes. The CDG spicy chicken was a bit disappointing, mostly just gochujang in flavor. Would come back, but not for a wait. There are definitely other places that serve just as good Korean in the area.

Our friend highly recommended this place. It is Michelin recommended. Walk in only, no reservation, but you can put your name in the Yelp waitlist inside the restaurant. We probably waited for a good 60-90min around 1pm on Sunday Luckily, there's 6 of us, so we can share many different dishes. The server and ppl are so nice. We ordered: Cold Roe omelet Mini Bossam Kalbi Jim Spicy seafood tofu stew Perilla seed tofu stew Eggplant rice Handmade Mandu Spicy seafood rice cake Korean buckwheat pancake Comes with complimentary of banchan and plain soon tofu dish The place was packed. Non stop waiting in line. We truly like this place from the food to the service.

The line was out the door on a Sunday before opening time, which I learned was due to Cho Dang Gol's recent listing on the NYT 100 best restaurants. But I had come here because they are the only restaurant in the city serving a unique dish, 메밀전 (buckwheat pancakes). Despite the cultural importance of 메밀 (buckwheat) to Korea as a whole, ironically it is hard to find the famous dishes that employ it. In Korea, there are specific outlets that focus on it - in addition to pancakes, you'll also often find 메밀국수, a thick noodle that ends up tasting like a cross between udon and soba. The rendition of the pancake done here is phenomenal, with a beautiful layering of chives and eggplant inside the pancake, served with a vinegar-based sauce on the side. And while I came here solely in search of this dish, I had to try some of the tofu stews they're famous for. The 들깨순두부 (perilla seed soondubu) had a delicious grainy texture with silky tofu and small chunks of tteok inside for good measure. Most of the NYT 100 best list is b.s., but this spot is worth the hype and line!

I'm still thinking about my DELISH meal!! I came for lunch (12-2:30pm), since their lunch sets are ONLY $20!! You can't find deals like that in nyc, esp for a Michelin Bib Gourmand spot! I joined the waitlist upon my 12:40pm arrival and waited ~30 min for my table to be ready. I ordered the Combo Set D, which is their mini seafood & scallion pancake with a mini stew - I chose their Spicy Kimchi & Beef Tofu Stew. Everything was SOO good! Firstly, their banchans/small plate starters were lovely. I especially enjoyed their homemade tofu, which is made in-house - SOO delectable! My Korean pancakes were perfectly fresh, crisp, and paired well with their sweet soy sauce! The Tofu Stew was the STAR, UGH YUM!! Staff were very attentive and refilled my banchans right away. They even offered me a plastic bib bc they saw I was wearing white! I can't wait to come back to try other items on their menu. Highly recommend!!

I'm one month post-Korea and I needed my bibimbap fix. I've been told this place is authentic and I believe it! We judge Korean restaurants by their banchan first, right? I thought it was excellent-- the tofu, broccoli, and fish cakes were my favorite. As for the bibimbap and the soy sauce it comes with, it was delicious and stayed hot the entire meal as it's in a hot pot. I will say though that I wish the rice wasn't so mushy. I would only come back for their lunch special on the weekdays since it gets pretty packed right when it opens on the weekends

My wife and I wanted to try out Cho Dang Goi, and it is worth all the hype it gets. We went around 4:30 to get in line so we could get in when they opened at 5:00. They were very fast with the complimentary side dishes. The tofu dish was warm and very comforting. The other sides were very good as well. We ordered the Cod Roe omelette, which I highly recommend. The Cod Roe was delicious! The green mayonnaise drizzled on top complimented it well. We also got the Spicy Galbi Jjim, which was amazing. The beef was so tender and the soup base gave the beef and veggies a very savory flavor. We also ordered Makgeolli rice wine which was very refreshing and went well with the entire dinner. Definitely go out of your way to eat here, their dishes are amazing and the wait staff is exceptional.

My new favorite restaurant in NYC! It's a Michelin Gourmand spot, which is very well-deserved. I came on a weekend for lunch and there was already a long line out the door by 11:45am (they open at 12pm and don't take reservations). We tried their famous cod roe omlette, the buckwheat pancake, and kimchi tofu stew. I'm usually not the biggest fan of fish egg dishes, but the cod roe omlette was the most delicious thing I've had in a long while! Super creamy and with the perfect slightly spicy green sauce on top. The meal comes with unlimited banchan which was also delicious! The kimchi tofu stew was also a highlight! It's one of my favorite Korean dishes, and every restaurant does it slightly differently. I felt that the quality of both the kimchi and tofu were exceptional here, and I couldn't put it down! Would highly recommend trying this spot at least once when you're in Koreatown!

comforting Korean food! My friends and I ordered food for takeout, so we avoided the lines... the beef and mushroom japchae was delicious and the best I've had! The meat was so well marinated. the spicy tofu stew was very good too. we got a few containers of rice in our order, super hot, so we knew it was fresh. we got a seafood pancake. that one did not travel well, and was soggy and had no crisp unfortunately. the beef bibimbap was good; not a standout to me.

Per my partner, Cho Dang Gol is his Korean best friend's all-time favorite Korean restaurant in the states. After having dinner here last night, I can see why. This was some of the best Korean food I've had, and there are plenty of options on the menu - perfect for sharing with a larger party. As a forewarning, waits for a table can take betwen 60-120 minutes. But that makes for a great opportunity to get light bites or drinks elsewhere. Standouts from CDG were the spicy galbi jim (not too spicy, for those like me who have low tolerance for heat) and mussel rice. The banchan here was also delicious. While waitstaff were scrambling to serve all the patrons, it was relaticely easy to flag them down for water and banchan refills. All to say, this place is popping and should be on your NYC hit list.

I came in fully preparing myself to be let down after hearing so much high praise for CDG, but they really do live up to the hype! Even from the beginning, the tofu appetizer and banchan were already so good. The tofu tastes really clean, super soy bean-y and pure. But if you don't like tofu, you probably won't like this dish. My top three of the night were the cod roe omelet, mini bossam, and spicy kimchi tofu stew. The cod roe omelet was so fluffy, and the cod roe wasn't bitter at all which I kind of expected. It was super creamy and the sauce on top made it even better. I saw the mini bossam used to come with the salted shrimp, so I was kind of sad to see we didn't get any. But it was still really good! I'm usually not a big jalapeño fan, but it gave it the perfect kick paired alongside everything else. And the spicy kimchi tofu stew was so good. It was the perfect amount of spice for me, and so so flavorful. It was kind of salty, and I'm sure if I had a whole bowl to myself I'd be really thirsty. But for sharing amongst several people, it wasn't too bad. The only things I was neutral about were the bulgogi and the soybean curd stew. They were good, but just didn't stand out to me the way everything else did. The rice is an additional charge, but it's pretty essential to the meal. I like the bowl it comes in, because it makes the bottom crispy. But the texture reminded me a lot of Korean microwaveable instant rice, which I'm not as big a fan of. The service was really quick too. I was kind of impressed by how fast they brought out food, cleared any empty dishes, and rotated customers in and out.

    Spicy Kimchi Soybean Curd Biji
    sophie y.

The tofu has a rich soybean taste. The kimchi biji has a balanced flavor with kimchi that brings a slight sourness but not too much, but enough to give flavor to the tofu stew. The oyster stew tastes really fresh too, if you want something simple but comforting this will be the pick. I like the way they make their steamed rice, it gives fluffy texture. Shrimp pancakes are solid, i can taste chunks of shrimp meat. I loooove their banchan. They refilled for us too. I can definitely eat a whole bowl of rice only with the banchan. The service was pretty good, they kept checking in with us and making sure everything was good.

Yes! It might be a wait but we had 7 seated and had another seat available.

    Unfortunately not

    Is there purple rice?

No purple rice, always white rice and a seasonal rice such as the eggplant chive rice (my favorite) or the mixed vegetable rice.

Do they have brown rice or mixed rice?

When we went they served white rice, but I believe you can order other types of rice (brown, e.g.).

Possible to split as long as you snag another dish although I have had the galbi jjim to myself and managed to finish it

Here's what we ordered: ~ Tako Wasabi - 5/5 stars A fiery delight. This appetizer feartures chopped raw octopus marinated in wasabi. It has a lively zest from the wasabi and is topped with tobiko, which adds a pleasant contrast in texture. ~ Honey Makgeolli - 4/5 stars A traditional fermented Korean beverage that is light and pairs brilliantly with your meal. It is a cloudy alcholoic drink served in a metal teapot, and surprisingly, there is much more in that teapot than you would expect. It easily provides six to eight generous pours. The flavor is subtly sweet with a pleasant tang. ~ Temaki Set - 4/5 stars You can order a set of three by choosing from selections 1-17, or you can order a la carte at the listed prices. Some of the temaki stood out more than others. Our two sets included marinated salmon, bluefin tuna, spicy yellowtail, spicy bluefin, and two dynamite temaki. ~ Spicky Pork Ssam Set - 5/5 stars Truly another standout entree that even surpassed my beloved grilled BBQ bossam. You received a generous basket of assorte greens, including romaine, kale, perilla leaves, dandelion leaves, nappa cabbage, and more. It is well worth the price and makes for a fun, interactive dining experience with your family and friends. We walked into a stylish but relaxed space that feels suited for both casual dinners and a night out with friends, with an atmosphere that balances energy and comfort well. The room gets lively when it fills up, but the noise level adds to the experience rather than detracting from it, making it feel like a place built for sharing and conversation. The food is where Hojokban stands out. The complimentary banchan sets the tone for the meal with flavorful sides that add variety before the main dishes arrive, each one thoughtfully prepared and offering a different texture or flavor profile. The gomtang soup is one of the more comforting options, bringing together tender meat, a rich broth, and classic Korean flavors in a way that feels hearty without being overly heavy. The galbi dishes are also a highlight, with the meat cooked well and carrying the sweet and savory balance that makes Korean-style grilled beef so enjoyable. The portions are generous, and the quality of the ingredients is noticeable across the board. The menu has several unique dishes worth exploring. The truffle potato pancake is one of the more memorable items, combining a familiar Korean staple with a richer, modern twist that adds depth without losing the essence of the original. The perilla oil noodles are another standout, offering a lighter but still flavorful option with a distinct nutty aroma that lingers on the palate. The beef tartare adds a more refined element to the meal, fresh and well seasoned, while dishes like the ramyun fried rice bring a fun comfort food element with bold, savory flavors. Together, the menu covers enough ground that you can build a meal around both familiar favorites and more creative choices. Service is friendly and the overall experience feels welcoming rather than overly formal. The staff are attentive without hovering, and they handle the busy flow of the restaurant with a pace that keeps the meal moving without feeling rushed. The menu is designed for sharing, and the portions make it easy to order several dishes across the table, allowing you to try more of what the kitchen has to offer. The lively atmosphere adds to the meal, making it a good fit for group dinners where the energy of the room matches the pace of the food. Hojokban does a good job blending traditional Korean flavors with a more modern dining experience. It is a place where you can come for familiar comfort food while still finding dishes that feel creative and different. If you enjoy Korean cuisine and want a restaurant with a little more personality, this is a spot worth checking out. Overall a solid option in the area if you don't want to wait for a long queue outside of the other popular spots.

Seafood Pancake: Great pick. Crispy on the outside and packed with seafood inside. Beef Belly & Mala Cream Noodle Soup: Loved this one. Udon with tender beef and baby octopus... so good!!! Spicy Braised Pork Rib Stew: Rich, comforting, and full of flavor. The highlight for me was the raw marinated crab. I spotted it on the wall menu and immediately had to order it. It's rare to find in the city! And honestly, this was way better than BCD's. So flavorful. Only complaint... the banchan portions are small and not a lot of variety. Other than that, I really enjoyed my meal and I'd definitely recommend this spot.

The food tastes good, the lunch prices are reasonable and honestly they have better ban chan than a lot of other places. (And where else are you going to get a full fish as a complimentary ban chan?) The servers kept things moving but with very minimal interference and no extra visits; we would have liked a little more attention when we finished some of the banchan and kind of expected they would be replenished, but we certainly were fine without it. And the entrees were delicious and even with other tables almost on top of each other it never felt crowded due to partitions that I saw them remove for some larger groups needing tables "together", and I never felt part of someone else's dinner convo. Presentation was amazing and food was delicious - Soon Tofu Soup with seafood for me, which arrived bubbling like a cauldron. It came with a raw egg that you crack into the soup and let it cook to your level of doneness. Hubs got hot stone bibimbap and as we all know the crispy rice is the best part of it... it's just tough to separate it from the actual stone dish so you can eat it, especially if you wait until it cools and fuses. If I was there with more stomach space I wanted to try the galbi, and in fact there's a weekday lunch combo that could facilitate that.

They advertised themselves as having the best katsu in NYC and they may just be right. With our order it came with a bunch of side dishes. Kimchi, Marconi salad, and mashed potatoes, and others. The Ssambap Set was incredibly satisfying. The beef was tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the fresh lettuce wraps, rice, banchan, and soup. It came with generous portions and made for a comforting, filling meal. The restaurant has a modern and welcoming atmosphere, the staff was friendly and attentive, and everything arrived fresh and beautifully presented. If you're looking for a delicious Korean lunch in NYC's Koreatown, Jeong Yuk Jeom is definitely worth a visit. I'll be coming back to try more of their menu!

The galbi-jjim was perfectly tender like I could literally pull it apart with my chopstick. The addition of the rice cake, pumpkin, and pyogo mushroom were a nice touch. The soy sauce base was a little sweet and if you take a bit and pour it over the mushroom sotbap, it is soooooooo good!!!!!!! The mushroom sotbap is so umami. There is foie gras in it which maybe be in a little overpowering for some people but I really enjoyed it I could easily eat a whole bowl of their freshly made kimchi. It was perfect. Not too salty or spicy or fermented. Literally perfect!!! I actually asked for seconds. The cold cucumber broth was really refreshing Highly, highly recommend making a resy!! Cocktails are also great here. Amazing dining experience, food, ambiance, service, and I highly recommend.
