I've lived in Inwood for 6 months and happened upon ChocNYC this morning, as I'm convinced we're going to get nicer restaurants and food establishments on Broadway north of 207. WOW! A beautiful space, the most friendly bakers and staff, and BEAUTIFUL pastries/cakes. We were there around 10.30a on a Sunday morning, had just eaten breakfast, but had to buy something - a delicious chocolate brownie w/ nuts. I've lived in Manhattan for numerous years and just moved to Inwood from W. 78th St, which is littered with expensive bakeries but none are as quaint as Chocnyc. So while their prices may seem pricey to some, they are average for main-stream Manhattan and I will continue to support this place. read more

Came in for the first time today. Really impressed with this place. The owners are locals (Inwood and Wash. Heights), the prices are reasonable, and the pastries and cakes are superb. Cookies are excellent too. The neighborhood really needed something like this. The Carrot Top is fine, but Chocnyc is waaaay better. Their baked goods actually have flavor. First and foremost, Choc is one of the best bakeries in NYC. They consistently put out different items that shift with the seasons that are delicious! Secondly, I would go toe-to-toe with anyone who has tried the red velvet cake and brushes it off as average. It's not. I have been stopping by Choc once a month for the past few months and always get the Focaccia roll and lemon bars, Which are very good. What's better is the welcoming environment from the owner and staff. They are friendly and knowledgeable. Covid-19 hit and everything has been limited everywhere. I ordered a cheesecake for a birthday party. It is the best cheesecake I've had. Light, not overly sweet, with a hint of sea salt. So happy made the order and there'll be more in the future. Anyhoo, I heard a new spot opened up and decided to cross my fingers that there would be cake available and oh please can your write HBD and such?! We hit gold in so many ways; the prices were quite reasonable, first hand look at the kitchen and chefs, don't forget the coffee and lastly the kids devoured the chocolate cake! Can I also give them mad props for having no plastic spoons, no sugar packs , no special liquids. I asked for sugar and they said with pride, "we do not hand out sugar packs!" Either way, ChocNYC is a total WIN for the neighborhood. I've shopped regularly and can say everything I've bought here is superbly crafted with quality ingredients and generous portions. I've grown to love some favorites, such as the chocolate croissant and their excellent tarts. But I also try something new every time. Their savory scones are almost like a small meal, chock full with olives or caramelized onions and other tasty morsels. I don't often buy baked items because most places swap butter out with cheap oil, which always leaves an unpleasant heaviness on the palate. Not here. Everything tastes super fresh and natural. Honestly, you would have to go down to the Flatiron or the Village to find this quality. I've often stopped by and bought several items, which their very friendly staff will happily box for you, for a host gift. "So where is this place?" people ask. I was VERY disappointed with a special-order $65 birthday cake from ChocNYC 2 weeks ago. I asked for a spice cake with cream cheese icing. The chef's business partner recommended getting a 3-layer so I went with that. It looked beautiful. However, the layers of icing were thicker than the cake. Plus, the cake had no discernible spice cake - it tasted more like a squash/pumpkin cake with fruit juice flavor.None of my guests ate more than a bite or 2. It was overwhelmingly icing and sweet. We threw away the 1/4 of the cake that had been cut and not wanting to throw it away gave the rest away. I've worked long hours everyday since that Sunday 2 weeks ago and I have no time to make calls. But, today, I had about 30 minutes free so I stopped in and spoke with the chef. He listened; he remembered the cake; he made the cake. He took a pause and spoke with his business partner and came back to me saying he was surprised and apologized that I was dissatisfied. Then he said they had nothing in place in this type of circumstance. I said "service recovery?" And he said yes, they had nothing in place, and "besides there's the matter of time". And I said "you mean because it's been 2 weeks and he said "yes". I explained that I worked long hours every day since the day I picked up the cake and he said he works every day too. And then silence. I left. I will never go back. A neighborhood business who doesn't seem to give a crap if a neighbor comes back. read more

I admit it: I'm addicted to CHOCnyc. The coffees are great, for starters. But the real stars are the pastries... I recommend the caramelized croissant (sweet, crunchy and flaky outside, buttery soft inside) and the sticky buns (like my grandmother made). Those are my faves! The best part is that the pastry kitchen is in full view, so you can watch the experts making gorgeous cakes and other goodies while you sip your coffee. There's nothing more mesmerizing than watching someone decorate a fancy dessert... it's really like seeing an artist at work, but more delicious.
