Ok so I've lived within two blocks of this place since 2005 and it looks like I wrote my original review of this place over 15 years ago. I've always done pick up here and I've come to appreciate the food over the years, its pretty good and prices have not gone insane even during covid lockdowns like some other places. They sort of have given up on inside dining, though you can if you need to, this place is really pretty good for chinese take out. Its fairly quick and the packaging is good. I can vouch for the General's chicken (its not overly saucy and its not that bright orange color, its distinct from sweet and sour chicken) especially. read more

Their prices are hella cheap. Eggrolls were $1, Small sizes of their various dishes are $4.95, an order of crab Rangoon is $3.95. That's all crazy cheap! But...nothing is what I would call delicious. Their Crab Rangoon was actually quite tasty. Full of creamy goodness in each piece. This was the only item I would get again if I had to. Everything else was very meh and just kind of blended together. We had a number of leftovers but I'm honestly not too sure I'm going to touch them. They more likely than not will be going straight into the basura. Lo siento. I tried the orange chicken, the sesame chicken and the pepper beef - none of which had much flavor and the tastes I did get from each dish simply was not good. I wouldn't get any of those main dishes again. The eggroll didn't taste great either and there was a lot of dough to it, not much on the inside. I'm pretty shocked. Staff refused to let me in the door to order takeout with my service animal. He's a real, trained service dog. As a person with a severe disability, I have rights under the Americans with Disability Act which this store refused to honor -- and rather rudely. There was one young man who offered to take my order down outside as a compromise, which is still an illegal denial of service and entry but better than nothing -- but the owner categorically refused to even let him do that. I picked up a shrimp and broccoli lunch special, which came with an egg roll (you can ask for a vegetable one) and fried rice. I also ordered crab rangoon. I got all of this for $11 which means they probably haven't raised their prices in a while. I was surprised by how large the portion was. The shrimp were big and more than I expected, when you take into consideration the price. Overall, it was easy and quick to call for a pick up. Just don't forget cash and tips. We just moved back to the neighborhood after being away for 17 years, and Chinese food is one of our "fast food" meals we like to get. We went back to ordering from China Express, but the last time we ordered, I waited in my car for an hour and half. They do not take phone orders. So I scour for Chinese restaurants on Yelp, and decided to try Choi's since it was very close to where we live, and the reviews were relatively good. Many years I've been wanting to stop and order from this place when I used to go watch a movie at the Logan. Well, today I thought I stop and order take-out for a later meal. My main reason was to order pan fried noodles. Upon entering this place, the owner (I Guess) was yelling something at me and I didn't understand a word he was saying. I kept telling him to speak slower and more clearly. Finally, I understood what he was saying saying. Only take-out, no dine in. I yelled back that was fine. had not intention in eating there anyway. I could tell it was only take-out because chairs were stacked ontop ot the tables. Right away he asked what I wanted, I told him I needed to see a menu first. I ordered some vegetarian egg rolls. and an afternoon special. I also wanted a side of pan-fried noodles. He angrily replied that they don't sell them. I found it strange since many of the other Chinese places I've ordered carried it. Anyway, I said, forget about the order since pan fried noodles is what I really wanted. I turned and left. There was a roach in our food. Our friends live within blocks in Logan Square and eat there often. I called and all I wanted was a replacement dish. With patience and saying the words bug, insect, and roach on the phone I was laughed at and ignored. To resolve the situation we drove to the restaurant, brought the food in and the younger gentleman there who seemed to do most of the work and communication replaced our meal. No refund though. But, having an extreme craving for Chinese food and feeling a certain glut for punishment, I ventured inside and ordered the Tofu & Vegetables (to go, as in, run away). I got a thunderous amount of food for $7 or so. The tofu was cooked PERFECTLY. No rubber here. The vegetables were nice and bright and the sauce they gave me (on the side, thank you) was happily much different from the usual brown goop you get at other places of this ilk; rather light and subtle. Very tasty. I would most definitely order again. Needing improvement (besides, of course, the interior decor smacking of long-term heroin addiction)? The fortune inside the fortune cookies. I don't remember what mine said but I remember it was disappointingly dull. I think it was an ad for Boost mobile. read more

LOL. This place exists solely for the amusement of the owner, I swear. If this isn't the set for a restaurant-themed PUNKED show, it should be. Don't eat inside, it's like a school cafeteria where they hassle and shuffle you to get people in and out faster, except that no one was waiting and it was 7pm. The waitress hates you, doesn't speak English and has a sneer that lights up the place. The owner will laugh in your face if you ask for recommendations, then talk smack about you to his wife in Chinese. They are bizarrely stingy about giving you cutlery and plates. Maybe they hate doing dishes or don't want the extra hassle? My party of 4 had to ask repeatedly for things like forks and plates. We even got argued with about whether we actually needed these things, because "the food comes on plates, you can eat there." Yeah, just eat it from the serving dish. With one spoon between the four of us. We each ordered an entree, but seeing as we're all independent people, we mistakenly thought it'd be nice to have our own plates and cutlery to eat off of. Don't ask for water, you get handed a bottle of water and charged an upservice fee even if you hand it right back and say you wanted a glass of tap, because the owner "doesn't know what you did to it and can't sell it now." They don't have hot tea, because screw you, customer, boiling water would take effort. Here's the weird part. The food is excellent and inexpensive. The location is great. There's a huge wellspring of anger about a certain coffee shop with a non-competitiveness clause just down Milwaukee from Choi's. The rule they put in place was that their next door neighbor can't sell individual croissants. Well, I'm starting to get a sneaking suspicion that the Logan Theater has a similar clause with its neighbors. See, I haven't heard anything to substantiate this (blatantly made up) rumor but, I swear, there must be an agreement that says none of the restaurants within half a block of the theater can sell decent food! Choi's, being a longstanding neighbor to the theater, takes this very (unwritten and probably untrue) clause very seriously apparently. They're a Logan Square institution that, whenever mentioned as a possibly Chinese destination, gets a look of disgust. And yet, somehow, they stay in business through a stream of customers that come through one at a time (including myself) for relatively long wait times and dry, usually flavorless, Chinese food. The reason is that it's cheap and the portions are large and filling. Also, that it's even there. In this part of Logan Square, there's not exactly a Chinese restaurant on every block. Also, pretty much everything on the menu is under $5.00 (for a small and usually even for a large). And, when you're about to catch a $4.00 movie next door, chances are your pre-movie meal isn't out to impress anyone. And, honestly, eating here prepares you for the experience at the Logan. The sound on the cheap television here cuts in and out to the point where it becomes tough to drown it out. Just like the sound might be iffy on your movie at the Logan. The seating isn't comfortable (some of the tables are a bit short) just like next door some of the seats in the theater have seen much better days. And the food here is as salty as the popcorn next door. Seriously, they might as well be a lobby restaurant for the Logan. The feeling is the same. It's like they're not even trying to compete with them at all. And, hence, my suspicions. read more

If I were to write the review on only that, I would have given this place two or three stars. I have ordered from Choi's one or two times before, HOWEVER, the last time i ordered, I called and placed my delivery with the rude man who barely spoke English. Usual. And then on second thought, I realized my total was about $7 more than it should have been. I called back to pose the question, to which he told me that the delivery was already on it's way, so I would accept this third meal that I didn't order, and "you eat it, you like it!!". I politely told him that I would not be accepting the delivery at all if he did not fix the charge on the credit card, to which he responded, "no, no change now! you eat it, you like it!" and then HUNG UP ON ME. Now. I work in retail. I deal with a lot of rude people. But this was a HUGE slap in the face. That is not at all how I expected to be treated by ANYONE, but especially not when the mistake was entirely not my own. Obviously I did not accept the delivery, so the delivery man proceeded to call my cell THIRTEEN TIMES after I'd already told him I wouldn't be accepting it unless he changed the charge on my credit card. TLDR; I can accept shitty Chinese food for a good price, but you should NOT order from the place solely based on the GOD-AWFUL customer service and outright rudeness of the workers. read more

This is our go-to spot for Chinese take away and not just because it's across the street from us. I used to think this place was pretty standard for regular, mediocre Chinese but after ordering from a different Chinese restaurant that had gotten good reviews and being extremely disappointed, I think Choi's is pretty damn good. But, to be fair, we don't stray past a few regulars so I can't speak for the entire menu, but our orders generally revolve around a mix of the crab rangoon, egg rolls, pot stickers (not my fave, they're a little too gummy for me), hunan beef, chicken fried rice, and general tso's chicken. Friends have gotten the shrimp fried rice, some of the veggie entrees, the sesame chicken, and beef lo mein, all which have been met with decent/good reviews. The following statement is more of a compliment than it sounds, but Choi's is not bad. That's important, because it is surprising how many Chinese places within Choi's price range manage to mess up simple Chinese-American dishes. Choi's dishes are never too greasy, and the ingredients are always fresh. I live around the corner so I eat there often. My favorite dish is the Sichuan chicken, which I always order mild, because I don't like very spicy food. The garlic chicken and Mongolian chicken are also very good. It's simple, but good: meat, vegetables and rice. I almost never order fried rice, but I do sometimes from Choi's. The lunch special at Choi's is generous. It comes with an egg roll and a soda. Choi's advertises that it serves sushi and smoothies, but I have yet to order either. But I have seen other customers consuming both and they looked pretty good. What else is there to say? The service is good. Your food is prepared quickly. The prices are very reasonable. The guy (Choi?) who works the front desk most of the time has a great personality and is always joking around, although I can't always understand what he's saying. Choi's is simply a good neighborhood Chinese joint. When I moved into the neighborhood I walked around and tried two other Chinese places, and I won't name names, but another spot two blocks away was terrible. The other was better, but not as good as Choi's. I'm giving Choi's four stars, but this is in the context of its peer group. I'm not comparing Choi's to some fancy west Randolph St. gastro-joint. I have lived in the Logan Square neighborhood for over 30 years. Choi's serves standard run of the mill Americanized Chinese food. The food isn't bad. Portions are huge. At times it can be very good like their potstickers, pepper beef, or kung pao chicken. Not too bad. Then you have two obstacles that we, as consumers, should never face. Horrible customer service. A legitimate asshole of an owner and the lady who serves you if you choose to dine in will treat you badly. Not a welcoming environment, very abrasive and arrogant for no reason at all. If youre seriously hurting for Americanized Chinese food, you're better off with Lee's Chop Suey on Diversey. You can go elsewhere like Friendship on Milwaukee close to Diversey. The new look is significantly cleaner than what it used to be. So dont be fooled by the new cleaner look. The staff there is not very nice and I wish I can give zero stars but it deserves a star due to the ok food. The service though is horrible at Choi's. Avoid them like the plague. read more
