It is so fun to have a dinner there! Their Hamburg is so simple and classic and so good! My son enjoys his food there too!

There's no reason to move a family of 3 from the booth to the bar with 2 toddlers. The restaurant was empty and my family was scolded to move to the bar at 3:30pm, simply because only one item was ordered. The server let them know that if you only order one thing you have to move. Well, they left without ordering more due to the rudeness of the staff. Since the management has changed, the service has gone down the tubes. Tried to address this issue and was told you have to call back because there's no manager and we're not allowed to take your info or give out their number. I'm sure if it was needed to accommodate another group they would have moved... but again the only other occupied booth was the servers daughter. Hypocrisy at its best. DO NOT RECOMMEND! read more

The rudest costumer service I have ever experienced. I was in shock after leaving in how (im guessing was the owner) could treat costumers like that. He was an older man. My kids weren't even done eating and told us to move chairs because costumers were coming in. They handed us our check when we were STILL eating. The service was TERRIBLE. I'm assuming it was the owner, but he was passive aggressive the entire time. We ordered our food and ordered cupcakes for the kids at the end of our meal and he basically kicked us out. He said "there's other people coming just stand and eat the cupcakes here". I had visited this restaurant many times when my kids were young but today I took my friend and her 5-year old. The new owner is wonderful. He interacted with us, especially my friend's son. We appreciated that the train continuously went around the tracks instead of only when it was bringing food to the tables. The wait staff was attentive. Food and drinks were good. Who can't love this place? It's a classic. Take your kids here and enjoy great food delivered in a train. The lines back up but they move people through pretty quick. There are gimmicky deserts and they certainly make their money from you. But it's the original place. read more

I have been coming here for over 20 years. I was heartbroken when it was shut down and left without an owner to run it. From the bottom of my heart thank you for getting it up and running again. The inside is the same yet looks newer somehow...maybe it's the layout. The food was delicious as always. Cute spot, not much seating for the amount of customers they have during their busier times. The food was good, my complaint would be our waitress. Originally we were on the awkward end of the bar table she offered us a booth we were a party of 2 I didn't wanna take up a booth if they were going to be busy but she offered it since the traffic slowed down. After migrating to the booth the food didn't take long at all, we ate once again we didn't take long to eat she took one of the empty burger trays immediately after finishing the burger she offered desert we didn't want dessert she brought us the check and in the matter of 1 minute she physically came to us 4 times to see if we left the card down. I wasn't done eating, I felt uncomfortable and pressured to leave, If we were going to be rushed to eat so someone else can sit I would have just preferred to sit at the bar table and enjoyed the food, myself and the restaurant. It's obvious the goal of the place is just to churn through customers as fast as possible. I took my daughter for her birthday, along with my mom, son, and baby. I ordered food for everyone but myself (ordered just a coke) and was told there is a $10 minimum per person and that if I didn't order an entree, I'd be charged a $10 fee. Food isn't very good but obvi that isn't why people go; however we way overspent and the kids were still hungry. There is no changing table and the bathroom is the size of a porta potty so I had to change my baby on my lap while sitting on the open toilet (there was no lid). No space to nurse. No strollers allowed inside. Staff shirts say something like "choo choo and depart." While we were there, they seated a family, then, while taking their orders, told them to move in favor of another group that walked in later. I was also told my baby in the carseat could not be placed in a high chair and would need to stay in the carrier on the inside of the booth as "the owner won't allow anything else." This blocked the view of the train for the toddlers and didn't seem safe. Just a very very frustrating and unenjoyable experience all around. The place is just too small and run to make money rather than good experiences. I'd hate to imagine if we came when it was busy! read more

Had a great time with my grandson and daughter today at Choo Choo restaurant. Cheeseburger and chocolate malt was spot on with 50's drive inn music playing in the back ground. The train that delivered the food was a hit with all of us . Thanks to the woman who run the place you do a great job !!!! To sum it up Great burger place along with friendly service and ambiance of the train world and 1950 's drive inn . Your kids will love it ! read more

A little pricy but for the novelty it's worth it ! My son had a great time riding the horse while we waited for the food. 2 adult meals and a kids meal came out to $44 and some change ( just a heads up for those who are interested in going ) the mini food train stopped working for about 5 mins but they were very quick to fix it ! ( mini heart attack moment ) definitely would recommend someone who has train loving kids who to visit here ! Very conveniently located next to a metra train station so it's definitely great for train loving kids. If memory serves me correctly, I haven't been to the choo choo since 1966... I was only just a little over 4 years-old when my father brought me here. Today they're still building fantastic memories for young ones (and this old fart too). I had a cup of turkey chili, grilled cheese w/ fries, and a HUGE vanilla shake. I have been going there for many years at the insistence of my Grandkids who have made it a family tradition. The place is definitely fun and popular for birthdays. When I last took my Grandson, I was told if I didn't eat anything (I was having a colonoscopy the next day and was fasting), that I had to pay $5. Keep in mind that I ordered him an adult burger, fries and a milkshake. On top of it, was sitting at a barstool that was thrown on the end of the bar just to create and additional seat and was way too tall even if I wanted to eat. I was not taking up any additional seating by sitting on it. Ridiculous policy that will cause me to not go back. I could see if I was coming in there and taking a table and ordering no food, but this was not the case. read more

The place is a slightly expensive IMOH. We ordered: 1- kids meal hamburger 1- burger 1-cheeseburger 1-hot chocolate 1-coke 1-root beer float Total-$42.90 Wtf!!! One expensive meal let me tell ya! And it's cash only. Thankfully we had cash on hand. The food was okay. It wasn't out of this world. I was a little annoyed at the fact that the kids burger legit had nothing on it. Not even a pickle. Not only did I willingly go to a restaurant filled with little kids, it was actually my idea & I actually enjoyed myself! I've never seen children squeal with such delight as at the Choo Choo Restaurant...everyone was cracking up over how happy all the kids were. We surprised Busia & took her there for lunch. Her & Grandpa used to take the Hubs there when he was just a wee tot & she was so excited when we pulled up. It was 11 a.m. on a Sunday so there wasn't a wait and we actually snagged the last booth along the counter - SCORE! If you sit along the counter your food is delivered on the little train. Now, you don't have to be a little kid to understand that is totally AWESOME! Their burgers are similar in style to Steak & Shake but far superior, in my opinion. They were bigger & more flavorful, with that perfect crispy crunchy edge to the patty. Their onion rings are the beer battered style & oh-so-good. And the malt...oh the chocolate malt! At least one person in your party should get one and share if they are feeling generous. They don't have a huge menu, but you can check out their offerings on their website. There's certainly enough to please the kids & the kid-at-heart. Also, they are CASH ONLY & they will ring up your bill on their ancient cash register. And speaking of ancient...they have a gigantic old air conditioner that still works! I just had to take a pic of it; it's floor to ceiling & bigger around than a refrigerator. It's a tiny place & there is probably one or two people cooking in the back & there were two sweet girls working the front. It might not be the fastest service as far as taking your order or bringing over your check but the food was ready pretty quick & being delivered on a train certainly speeds things up. ;-) Oh, one last thing...it was one child's birthday while we were there and they had the train deliver her a cupcake with a candle on it and they played the Happy Birthday song over the speakers, complete with the server tooting their train whistle along with the tune. We have been coming here for years. The prior owner took great pride in the quality of the food and the fun experience for the kids. My grandsons knew when the postcards came in the mail they were going for a yummy and fun birthday lunch at the choo choo. We went to celebrate my grandson's first birthday and were so disappointed. My daughter and I had a bowl of tasteless chili that cost nearly 9 bucks per bowl a couple kids hot dogs and a kids cheese burger a blt and drinks the bill was nearly 85 dollars. The once homemade cupcakes with butter cream frosting were clearly store bought and the chocolate shake hardly had any chocolate in it. I squeezed out some ketchup for the kids and a few tablespoons of water came out first and now in the basket getting the fries all wet. Just an awful experience. Never again! read more

I have loved taking my kids here for years until today. I brought my boys for their birthdays as I do every year and the man who runs it, was so rude he made my son cry. We were waiting in line just after they opened with only a couple people in front of us. He asked us to move up but there was a floor vent that we would have been stepping on so we stayed right behind it. He then told us to move up again so my son moved up and part of his foot was then on the vent. The man walked back over and said do you like the air? Then very loudly , in a stern voice said, "GET OFF MY VENT". My son's eyes filled with tears and I said that wasn't nice to speak to a child like that he was simply there because you kept moving him up and you could have said that nicely. His response was "what did I say? And oh I had a smile on my face" which he absolutely did not. This was the second time this man was rude but I overlooked it as before covid the people there were some of the best people and made it such a great experience. I don't want to loop anyone else into this poor experience but if this is the owner, he should be ashamed of not only embarrassing a kid, but ruining his bday tradition. He is not a nice person, and a better role model should the face of that restaurant. read more

Awful experience! Our two year old loves trains so we decided to take him here as treat while we were in town visiting family. Unfortunately, since I am nursing our newest addition and can't eat dairy or gluten. Knowing that they probably wouldn't have anything I could eat, we picked up something on the way that I'd be able to eat so that I could eat with my hubby and two year old. Once we ordered, an older white-haired woman who seemed like the owner approached our table and told me I wouldn't be able to eat my food that was sitting on the table in a box. I felt I welcomed by her, but I said ok, I won't eat it here. She walked away. A few minutes later she came back with a bag and said I could put my food in there so other customers wouldn't see it. What?! It's in a box, completely closed and not visible. What's the big deal? As a former owner of several businesses, I would NEVER approach a customer in that way as it's way more important to me to relate to others in ways that have them feel welcomed and respected even if it means bending any policies. The manger/owner at the Choo Choo Could have just left it alone when I told her I wouldn't eat my food there. OR better yet, she could have expressed some care and curiosity by asking me why I brought my food- and based on my feedback she could have gotten some golden nuggets of information that may have resulted in her adding some gluten free, dairy free or overall healthier options to the menu which may actually have led to an increase in her business and not the potential decrease I imagine she was focused on by me bringing my own food. And to top it all off... When we got back to our car (which was parked in their lot) I ate my food. Afterwards my hubby went to throw out a cup and my to go box in their dumpster and the same lady ran outside their back door screaming at us saying the dumpster was locked and not to use it. I find so much wrong with this. First off, she was clearly watching us even after we left the restaurant which felt creepy and disrespectful. Second, you're going to yell at us for throwing out a cup and an empty to go box in your dumpster AFTER we just patroned your restaurant?! So wrong and so offensive. As for the food- low quality, mediocre food at best. The concept is great, but the menu could definitely use a revamp! Including adding (at least a few) gluten free options, antibiotic free meats as well as some healthier overall options. Heck, even some sweet potato fries would have been great! Suffice it to say, we will NOT be going back to the Choo Choo ever again. Next time we'll go to the train restaurant in forest park instead which is much more highly rated. read more

The owner and daughter are sweet. I went there during the late afternoon & it was filled with Christmas decor and spirit. Also there was a menorah. The veggie burger was alright. Good fries & onion rings. Strawberry malt was pretty good. The train was entertaining. It's a cute place to bring kids... Or a Sheldon Cooper. read more

I was prepared to find the Choo Choo Restaurant mediocre. When they send your food our on a boat, conveyor belt or a toy train, I get skeptical about the food. But wrong I was! I ordered a burger with onion rings and a strawberry milk shake. Because if you are in a restaurant that has a choo choo train, it is appropriate that your dinner beverage is a milk shake. Which from what I could see was made with ample strawberry ice-cream and served in a tall metal cup. Beverage and dessert in one! The burger was old fashion and buttery goodness. The beef patty was pressed flat and thin on the grill giving it a beautiful sear to the patty. The bun was buttery, fluffy, and toasted to perfection. I ordered mine with raw onions but grilled onions is an option as well (both are free options)! Lettuce, tomato, and pickles included. I upgraded the crinkle fries for the onion rings with no regrets. As I'm eating I see the window sign "Hot Coffee served with Heavy Whipping Cream". And there you go! Food done right but enjoy in moderation.
