A friend invited me to meet her at Chophouse 13 for an early dinner. She said there was a reasonably priced bar menu if you ordered before 5:00 p.m. There are three "entree"-level choices in the bar menu--3 fish tacos, six chicken wings, and three sliders, each for $10. All three had something onion in or on them but I was able to get the sliders "onion-free" to avoid an allergic reaction to anything onion. I didn't know they'd come with fries so I ordered a goat cheese/beet salad to go with them ($16), and iced tea ($3). My friend ordered the sliders and the deviled eggs platter. I thought it looked great, even with onion powder in the egg mixture (so I couldn't have any). The food was tasty and sliders were moist (sometimes the smaller size makes them prone to be overdone). While our server offered my friend additional drinks (wine), she did not ask if I needed a refill of iced tea. At the very end she asked if I wanted a tea to go but I'd needed it ahead of that. I did accept the offer, however, for the trip home. I loved the salad and would order it every time (with a little less vinaigrette)! The one major issue arrived with our tabs--we were charged regular price for the sliders ($16). The server did get that changed but just be careful and check your bill if you arrive early for the bar menu items. I did appreciate that the server warned me about the onion content of the eggs and overall the dining experience was enjoyable. Really nice place in Mandarin. We were sitted in the back room, which is not as nice as the main room. Service was great, the waiter had help and our sparkling water was always timely refilled by her assistant. We both had trio. Great renovation of the former Tree Steakhouse. Updated and modern finishes in the same familiar setting, the Chophouse is an now an upscale steakhouse. Most menu items are ala carte and the steaks are a little pricey, but they were very well prepared. We ordered the 6 ounce filet and for sides we ordered a baked potato and the Brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were cooked with bacon and tasted great. Service was phenomenal with great attention to detail. Our server was very knowledgeable about the specials and was very friendly and accommodating. The St Johns area in Jacksonville doesn't have too many local spots, but ChopHouse is by far a hidden gem off of the busy San Jose Blvd. Formerly Tree Steakhouse, Chophouse had a makeover and a classy facelift. I was worried because Tree Steakhouse had a cozy, English pub feel, but they did a great job with the renovation--it still feels cozy, but it now has an elevated feel. I've only ever been for happy hour at the bar, but it is a great spot for ambiance at a good price. They have $4 house wines and beers during happy hour as well as some yummy discounted appetizers. We order the Blue Cheese chips that come with a balsamic reduction drizzle-so yummy! If you are looking for a nice dinner or a great spot to get drinks with friends, ChopHouse is a great choice! Wife and I are still new to Jax and wanting to try new restaurants and someone recommended CH13. It's very lovely inside with a throwback feeling. I ordered a Yellowstone 7 year on the rocks and it was smooth, taste was pure, and only thing missing was a stogy. Steaks were cooked perfectly to our request. Calamari was slightly over cooked but nonetheless it was still delicious. Our waiter was very quick and knew everything on the menu while making only a couple of suggestions over any special items. First off, John at the bar was a great bartender with a nice since of humor and gave exquisite service. I started with a Chopin slightly dirty up martini. Outstanding. With the entree, I had a Woodford Reserve Old Fashion which was awesome. This guy is really good. For an appetizer, I had the Bleu Cheese Chips. They were massive and delicious. A very nice presentation. For my entree, I had the 14 oz Ribeye rare with sautéed mushrooms. The steak was perfectly cooked. It was a wonderful cut that had been extremely well trimmed. Incredible. The sautéed mushrooms were a "boat" serving which complimented the steak nicely. I met some really cool people eating at the bar and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Came for dinner tonight around 6:45 with no reservation. I was very happy when they said they could seat us right away. It was my son's birthday and we didn't get to eat at the restaurant he had originally chosen so when he said he wanted a steak we said let's try and hope for the best. We ordered the mussels and deviled eggs to start. I'm not a fan of deviled eggs (or any eggs for that matter) but I did try one and I've got to say it was really good! The yolk part had a really nice almost spicy brown mustard flavor to it. It was different, but really good. The mussels were delicious. I could have made a meal out of a loaf of bread and the delicious white wine lemon butter sauce they were in. We ordered a filet for my son, I got the broiled shrimp and my husband got the Chophouse trio (filet, shrimp and scallops) For sides we ordered French fries, whipped potatoes and lobster Mac and cheese. Our waitress wasn't the most attentive. We had to ask 3 times for a basket of bread and we went without drinks for awhile because she just never came back to check on us: We try to be patient because we know places are understaffed, but it was annoying. And the restaurant was more than half empty. But she was very polite and professional. My son's filet was cooked to perfection and he ate the entire thing! My shrimp were a little blah, but I added some cocktail sauce and they were fine. My husband said his shrimp and scallops were to die for. He said they were the best scallops he'd ever had. He didn't care for his filet. Said it just didn't taste right. It wasn't bad, it just tasted weird. The whipped potatoes were delicious and the lobster Mac and cheese was so good, although they really shouldn't call it "lobster Mac and cheese" because we only had 1small piece of lobster in the middle. This place is one of the best steakhouses in Jax, if you want a perfectly cooked steak then you're reading the right review. My wife and I both loved our experience at ChopHouse Thirteen and we will definitely be eating here again. The staff were all very friendly and the service was fast, not what I expected at a steakhouse to be honest. We been here a few times for special occasions. They are very expensive but the food is definitely delicious. This time we tried the deviled eggs and man were they good especially the ones with the pimento cheese. We sampled other appetizers that our party received. The calamari is good though not as tender as I would like but the sauce is great with a little kick and its a nice portion. Same for the chop chop shrimp...good portion, spicy delicious sauce. The bread is now an appetizer and comes with butter with olive caponata. The bread just blew me away...so soft and great flavor. I ordered the new york strip with truffle butter in top and a side of loaded whipped potatoes (they were out of baked potato sad face). I ordered it medium and yes it was perfectly pink in the middle but not as tender as I would have liked it and it had a little too much fat on the ends and some gristle I couldn't eat. The quality that used to be here when it was The Tree is long gone. Broiling a steak is almost a science. If you know the oven temp, the cut, and thickness, then it's broiled at so many minutes per side to get the finish you want. So when I order a medium well steak, I don't expect it to come out on the plate bloody and red inside. I also expect it to be a HOT steak, not just warm. When I send it back to be properly cooked, I don't expect it to be returned still red inside, char-broiled outside, and remaining bloody. That's simply inept chefs and poor training and management. And that's why I refuse to pay for food that is not what I ordered, especially at an expensive restaurant. You can apologize all you want, but you ruined a dining experience with others and time and the experience is irreplaceable...just like this restaurant's reputation. read more

I have had Chophouse Thirteen bookmarked for awhile. I decided to take my husband for his 35th birthday. Our server was friendly but took a long time to take our order. He had a small section so I couldn't understand why it took so long to take our order. After finally receiving our food, the food was extremely mediocre for the price. I am well traveled and have been to steak houses all over. I didn't complain about the food because I figured I would take it home and fix it up. The server brought the check and lost my card. The server was apologetic but the manager continuously advised that the server couldn't have gone far. Our check was over $200 which was fine, but losing my card is unacceptable. The manager never apologized and to make matters worse, we got food poisoning. We will never visit again. read more

Our experience was absolutely horrific; Started out with service being very slow, not very much attentiveness, and the bartender was frustrated because we wanted to slow walk our order. Came to the table, asked us to leave, and will not be serving our party tonight (of 6 people), we continued to ask why we would not be served, and she wanted to be very assertive and explain to us it is none of our concern to why they were kicking us out, other than "past experiences". This was my first experience, in over 2 years. We wanted to ask her why we had been asked to leave and she couldn't provide us a reason to why we should leave. She also threatened to call the police on us if we did not get up and leave right now, we all cordially had attempted to rectify the situation, she didn't want to have it. We believe that we were profiled, and discriminated against, and mistaken for different people, unsure of what was going on in the pow wow of the kitchen. Ribeye with green peppercorn au-poivre. They killed it with too much of the peppercorn. My wife ordered the 6oz filet and it was not cooked to her perfection...too rare. My son's 14oz ribeye was perfect. No bread was offered or served. And a bottle of wine was consumed. Overall, we won't be going back. We came here for our anniversary dinner. 2 adults, 2 kids. The atmosphere is quiet and had great lighting. Just enough to see the food and menu, but just dark enough to lend to a calm atmosphere. We made reservations on OpenTable earlier in the week. chophouse called 3 hours before to confirm our reservation, which I appreciated. We started off with appetizers, Escargot (delicious! Just the perfect amount of garlic & butter! I do wish it came with more crostini, but we had bread at the table. We also ordered the calamari for the kids. good, the marinara sauce was also good. I ordered CH13 Trio (filet, scallops & shrimp). The filet was cooked PERFECTLY. I haven't had a perfect filet in years. I had to savor every bite! The scallops were also cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of butter! We also ordered the Ribeye, the Salmon, and kids' chicken fingers. For dessert, I had the Bread Pudding. It put me over the edge. I usually don't order dessert, but we were celebrating, so I did. It was delicious. I ate it all! Haha We also ordered a Chocolate Torte, I was told it was also good. The breading was a bit heavy for my taste. My wife ordered the grouper and it was fine but this is a steakhouse so that's were they shine! For larger parties they have an auto gratuity which alot of restaurants have. The concerning practice is they add tax to the gratuity! This is technically legal under Fl law but not consumer friendly in my view. So after adding a 20%+ auto gratuity they apply a 7.5% tax on that gratuity. We were a party of 6 sitting in the bar, separate checks. After complaining about this practice they removed the tax. read more

The dining experience could have been affected by the busy holiday season. The appetizer and soups took a long time to arrive and that was disappointing. Our server (Sandy) tried to keep things going. The food is prepared on the grill and they should advertise that as it is a different taste. If you like food from the grill you may enjoy your meal more. I think the lamb chops could have been seasoned more. Nick (the manager) came over and listened to our concerns. He explained the restaurant concept and addressed our issues with great customer service skills and tools. This isn't where you'll want to come to see new, innovative takes on dining, but it's a solid spot for a classic steakhouse experience of decades gone by, and a good option for satisfying traditionalists looking for a special night out. We started out a round of impressive and surprisingly creative cocktails, strong but balanced in flavor - major kudos to the bar here. For an appetizer, we went with the meat and cheese board. The board was generous and delicious, but unfortunately it was dropped at our table without and explanation of what the board featured. Next came salads - a simple but fresh house salad, and the one true disappointment of the night: the chophouse salad. This came out a bland mix of wilty iceberg lettuce, almost no hearts of Palm or sunflower seeds promised on the menu, and an oddly sour dressing. It baffles me, honestly, that such a clear miss is even on the menu. Sending it back, thankfully, was handled well. Our entrées featured ribeye and NY strip -- excellent cuts cooked to the ordered temperature. The mushroom au poivre was well balanced. For sides, the risotto, au gratin, and Brussels sprouts all impressed, with the latter being perfectly crispy. Unfortunately, we had a whole extra order of sprouts that didn't make it into our boxed-up leftovers -- a real disappointment to uncover the next day. Our server was lovely, and overall, the service staff was very friendly but more informal (and at times, a bit out of sync) than folks who frequent fine dining will expect. That's not a dealbreaker for me, but I suspect it would be a bit jarring for others. ChopHouse Thirteen is the perfect place for a Valentines date night! The moment you walk in it feels like a step up from the usual dinner locals (or at least a step up from my norm). Right when you walk and you were greeted with a smile from the host stand and immediately we were asked how her day was so far instead of the normal what's your name do you have a reservation. The restaurant didn't seem to have any Valentine's Day specific decorations but the ambience was still great for Valentine's Day date. Almost as soon as we sat down we had our water glasses filled and bread on our table then our waitress, Faith, came over and took our drink order. Faith was very Nice and patient as I was not 100% sure what I wanted right away. After some deliberation and some suggestions I decided on the pomegranate drink because it would be the perfect color for the evening! For my entrée I ordered the trio which was an amazing bang for your buck. My fillet was cooked perfectly and there was plenty of shrimp and scallops for me to also give my husband a few. I am not sure what seasoning they used on the outside of the fillet but it was fantastic it gave the meat such great flavor that there was really no need for it to be topped with anything and I was trying to avoid any additional calories. When I had my first scallop I will admit I did think it was cooked a little too long but then my second and third scallop were cooked perfectly. My shrimp were perfectly flavored and really added a nice touch to my meal. My husband and I also split, I'm using the term split loosely as he ate the bulk of it, the lobster mac & cheese. There weren't as many lobster chunks as there have been in the past however the flavor is amazing and I still wouldn't get anything else as this is easily my favorite side. All in all Chophouse Thirteen gave us a great Valentine's Day experience and we will be heading back for our next special occasion! read more
