To start, we got there about 6 pm, and wanted to enjoy the roof top... mistake number one! Had to wait about 10 mins to go up, no biggie! I appreciated the wait in their lobby where their staff that was so nice. Got to the roof top and grabbed a table, while the place seemed busy, there were at least 4 people working the area. Sat down and legit waited about 15 mins before calling someone's attention, because no one came to great us or offer menus, I will venture to say staff saw us and pretend it they did not. One lady finally came over, and while waiting on us she was very nice and apologetic, however that does not negate the fact that our drink order took another 10 mins and a reminder to arrive. We actually ordered and asked for everything to be delivered at the same time to avoid further waiting. Well, that didn't work, we awaited at least another 40 mins for food and actually had to ask our server to check on it and give us our check before the food arrived. Although we were told we could wait on the second floor where there was seating, there still wasn't an option to have a drink before dinner. I had assumed that having a reservation might allow for a bit more flexibility, but that wasn't the case. The food was good, and while service was organized, it felt somewhat impersonal. A few requests were missed, and although our meals were delivered efficiently and at the same time with the help of multiple staff members, the interaction overall didn't feel particularly comfortable or attentive. Also worth mentioning is there 3rd floor rooftop, amazing for a happy hour. As for the food the steak is cooked as asked, which should never be beyond a medium rare lol. We have been loyal customers of Cowford Chophouse for years. It has always been the go-to restaurant for our long-standing social group of friends to gather for dinners and celebrations, which is why this experience was so disappointing. Unfortunately, it will also be our last. We had a party of 12. Since we couldn't reach anyone to make a reservation for our full group, we made two online reservations for six. Earlier that week, I emailed the restaurant explaining that the reservations were for one party and asking if we could be seated together. I never received a response. On the day of our reservation, I called again and was told they couldn't seat us together because of other reservations. When we arrived, I asked once more and was told we would at least be on the same floor. Instead, our party was split between two different floors of the restaurant. What made this even more frustrating was what happened next. Our table of six was seated next to two empty four-top tables. At that point, only four more people from our group were still arriving. We asked if those four could simply be seated at one of the empty tables directly beside us. We were told it was against their policy to seat "split groups" together. I asked to speak with the manager, who repeated that it was against policy because the restaurant was at capacity. Yet the restaurant was clearly not full. When I pointed that out, he explained they intentionally don't seat every table so everyone "gets their steak on time." That explanation simply didn't make sense. If the restaurant wasn't actually full and there were empty tables immediately next to us, why couldn't four members of our party sit there? Instead, they were seated on an entirely different floor, making it impossible for our group to enjoy the evening together. What I still can't understand is the purpose of this policy. Why would a restaurant intentionally separate a group that is dining together? We weren't asking anyone else to move or requesting special treatment. We were simply asking to use tables that were already empty so our friends could celebrate together. The entire purpose of dining out as a group is to spend time with one another. Separating us onto different floors completely defeated that purpose. The most disappointing part wasn't being told "no." It was the complete lack of customer service. I emailed in advance and received no response. I called the day of. I asked politely when we arrived. At every step, we were met with rigid policies instead of common sense and any effort to accommodate loyal customers. This wasn't just a random party of 12. We were a long-standing social group that has chosen Cowford Chophouse for our dinners many times over the years. Twelve guests represent a substantial evening of business, and we expected our loyalty to be met with at least a reasonable effort to keep us together. Instead, we were treated like an inconvenience and left feeling that our business simply didn't matter. Jacksonville has no shortage of excellent steakhouses. Hospitality is about more than serving a good steak--it's about making guests feel welcome, valued, and wanting to return. The second floor has a nice view of downtown and is also very romantic. We love all of their signature cocktails but if you're dining here during the fall, you have to try the cider one which is a gin based drink with chai and apple flavors- TO DIE FOR! (I got 3, but I could have drank 30 had it not been for the gin!) I am in love with their ribeye here which pairs perfectly with their chimichurri. We also enjoy the risotto and the scalloped potatoes with prosciutto. Additionally, the king crab is succulent and the wood fired notes are great.
