I really wanted to check out choppers one day. I always walked by this super casual burger and fries shop. It reminds me of a trendy fast food joint from the early 90s. The food was what I expected, processed goodness. Ha. I really enjoyed the fried mushrooms. The restaurant forgot to put cheese on my burger so I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I wanted, but I'm sure it would have tasted better with it. I tried to slab all that cheese from my cheese fries on there to compensate. The fries could have been a little less drenched in cheese but they were good. The food was delicious but the employee wouldn't use his face mask properly. Pros: Food was delicious. Burger had a good overall consistency that comes with fresh food. Shakes were unexpectedly good, even long after we left them sitting out. Cons: Employee was being inconsiderate of our safety by not properly wearing their face mask. In this time of delivery or get-it-and-go, brief interactions become quite important. The gentlemen preparing my order had their face mask over their chin. While I appreciate being asked if I needed anything else, I prefer for others to demonstrate consideration by properly wearing a facial covering. He kept expecting me to walk up to him for my order, I signaled to the gentlemen that they should have a covering over their mouth and nose. But they just walked away. I have to give Chopper's a little shout out. This is not white tablecloth dining obviously; this is the classic Chicago fast casual spot, with burgers, dawgs, beefs & shakes. But they certainly do the best they can with what they're serving; the fries are always hot, the bread is never stale, and the veggies are always fresh. I was particularly impressed when I went nuclear and ordered a loaded Chicago hot dog for delivery... and asked for the sauces on the side. I didn't want a soggy dog, but I also didn't want to put on pants & leave the house to pick up a hot dog. Needless to say, Chopper's had my back. They packaged EVERYTHING - the pickle, the onions, the sport peppers, the relish, even for the love of God - the celery salt, in separate containers! My roommate said I'd cost them more than what the order was worth in portion cups... and I did feel a little guilty for their labor. They went so far above and beyond and I got a delish delivery hot dog, which is like waking up with a baby unicorn in your bed! Me and Choppers, my good ol' friend, go WAAAAY BACK. How far back you ask? I attended Johnathan Burr Elementary since pre K that is right across the street from..... you guessed it CHOPPERS! I graduated from Burr in 2007 and I still come back to this day. I grew up on the free smells piping out of this joint. THAT SWEET SWEET GREASE IN THE AIR during reese time was no joke - it'd make a vegan's stomach grumble haha. The food to me is the best. That's the magic of Choppers, well that and the price is not that bad for the amount you are getting. Now, I'm not going to bore you and tell you how great it is because I'm clearly bias haha. Instead I will cap off my review with my favorite food hacks me and my buddies have developed over the years at our favorite hang out spot. Rule of thumb: Always eat your food at Choppers. If you go the to go route or delivery the food is going to be shitty. Cold Choppers fucking blows so don't do that to yourself. The food needs to be as hot as possible for it to taste as great as possible. Pro tip: Don't be a fucking jabroni - Get the CHOPAX! With a Chopax you get cole slaw and steak fries on the side. First fries, you can either dip them in the cole slaw or get sloppy and add cheese, chili, and sweet peppers. Now with the cole slaw, what I do is instead of dipping them in the fries I jam them into my burger - THAT SHIT IS FIRE!!!!!!!! Pro tip: Strawberry milkshake or GREEN RIVER "don't play yoself" Pro tip: The meatball sandwich (add sweet peppers and cheese). Stopped in for a quick cheeseburger and fries lunch. We ordered one quarter pounder and one Choppak special. "Everything" on a burger includes ketchup, mustard, thinly sliced tomato, pickles, lettuce and grilled onions. Enough mustard and grilled onions to actually taste them. Extra ketchup - and hot sauce - available at the counter. Burgers were char-grilled and juicy. Buns were not overly bready. Fries were thick and fresh. Mocha shake was more chocolate than mocha - but thick and delicious all the same. The cole slaw was disappointing to me - a creamy dressing and the cabbage was thin and limp. I only had two bites and tossed the rest. Inside seating is available in some small high top tables and then counters along the windows. Most of the floorspace that is not used for seating is taken up with those 25 cent machines offering assorted candies, temporary tattoos and my favorite - emoji sponge balls. Would I come back? Years ago I would get drunk, take a nap and go to work. I had perfected being hungover so I wouldn't hate life, but every now and then shots snuck into my life and left me swearing off drinking forever. Those days, I frequently found myself getting a Choppak either during lunch or as soon as I got off work. Yes, I knew I'd regret it later (not in a White Castle kind of regret, but the "oh I'm so full why did I eat that much?" kind of regret), but I'll be damned if this isn't great hangover food. Ok, ok, so I'll eat here not hungover.....but the Choppak is a lot of food and I actually don't crave greasy hamburgers often. I used to work down the street and every now and then my friend could convince me to make a run here during our break. One of my bosses would tell me how I'd hate life later and it'd run through me, but he never turned down the other half of my burger. That has to say something, right? I've only had a chocolate shake from here, but it's nice and thick and impossible to drink through a straw. In other words, it's my kind of shake. I tend to think the prices are a little much, which is why I rarely try anything else, but the Choppak is a solid deal and I still head here every now and then. Thirty-sumn' years. I'm damned with myself that I'm Chicago born and raised now for just under thirty years and I just dragged my ass to Choppers this past weekend. Now I've never known anyone to actually talk about Choppers but everyone knows the place as I'm guilty of this too. You know a burger will be a burger, but the Choppak is put together well for the price and portion. $5.95 gets you a huge double with all the trimmings. Choppers gets extra love for automatic grilled onions. I added bacon but it wasn't a show stealer since I would've liked it the same without the extra. Definitely liked the touch of steak fries and the cole slaw was good. I don't necessarily think I would order anything else from Choppers except for the burger and some sides cause why mess with a good thing. In one visit they have a return customer now. For fun and competition they have a quad burger. I will own one of those real soon. And c'mon Chops you might as well include at least a small drink in the price. That's just lazy and annoying. I was originally looking for a place that delivered Italian beef and that is how I found this place. There menu is plentiful with many things to choose from.
