My crazy sister in law decided to door dash some lunch over to my place yesterday hence me writing this review. I otherwise wouldn't find myself here because 1. I've been here before years ago and I didn't enjoy it and 2. Reading some of the reviews for this place makes me uncomfortable. My sister in law went overboard in ordering and here's what I think about the dishes she chose. Some of the ingredients seemed fresh ie veggies/noodles. The authentic taste for every dish was missing. Everything was quite bland. For example, the nuoc Cham/nuoc mam tasted super watered down and defeated the purpose for flavoring the vermicelli, summer rolls, spring rolls etc. I've never been a fan of Vietnamese papaya and this salad literally just tasted like the banh mi pickled vegetables but with papaya and peanuts. The popcorn chicken had an old taste and was already soggy by the time it arrived. The bun bo hui along with everything else lacked depth. I didn't even touch the vermicelli because to be honest, it was all the same ingredients as the summer rolls. The summer rolls were okay but as I've already mentioned. Disgusting! After receiving my order of pho, I was ready to enjoy. Luckily my girlfriend stopped me as she noticed something floating on top of the broth. IT WAS A BUG!! I called the server over and told him the problem. He didn't seem to be phased fazed at all (this isn't their first rodeo). After that I didn't even receive any compensation, I had to pay for that bowl. It quite disgusting since they make the broth in bulk and that little cockroach was stewing and contaminated the whole broth. Totally my last straw with this place. In addition to their cockroach infested food, I always encountered rude servers, they employ a bunch you young entitled kids to run this joint. read more

This is a hidden gem in the food seen in Monterey bay. The food is fresh and inexpensive. Great place to enjoy fresh spring rolls during hoy summer and a bowl of steaming pho in the winter. Surely it will not disappoint you. They also offer a decent selection of beers . My wife and I sometimes just go Smith appetizers and drink for a light lunch. You can also enjoy outdoor seating when the weather is nice. They now have three locations: Monterey, Carmel by the sea and Seaside. read more

First time here and it's totally disappointed. So we didn't have cleft the food will be as good as the Bay Area so for food wise I think it's decent just for a noodle soup with quit amount of msg. Our table is filthy and sticky. What gets us disappointed is the service. We were here quit early, only 2 tables inside with 3 servers. The girls rather chat at the corner than paying attention to customer who tries to flag them down multiple times. Well, chatting is not all about the disappointment but the attitude with the long grey blond hair girl. She sounds like I don't gaf about your table. I ordered a large coco-taro snow with boba ($5.25), Vietnamese egg rolls ($6.50) and large stir fried egg noodles with shrimp ($11.50). But then I noticed some strange blue specs floating in the soup and tried to figure out what they were. Definitely mold! To top it all off, I found a thick and short hair. Service was pretty fast. Food was so amazing. Temperature of food was spot on. Food presentation was very nice. Vegetables were so vibrant and crunchy. I had a bowl with chow mein noodles stir fry with chicken. It is such a tasty dish. I have been there 3 times in a few months and will go again. I have had the Chinese chicken salad and it is also amazing. There were quite a few customers eating when I was there and all of the different dishes coming out of the kitchen were so delicious looking. The restaurant seating is mostly booth and has very pleasing music. Every one should try this place at least once and you will keep going back for more! read more

Ordered take out from here during my vacation in Monterey and was really pleased with the food. I ordered bbq chicken and gyoza and my husband ordered pho. Slightly different taste than the Vietnamese food out in Southern CA where I live but still really good! Now I understand why it was so busy for a Tuesday evening. We ordered the green papaya salad, grilled 5-spiced chicken vermicelli, and bun bo hue chay (veggie pho). Food came out fast and were all so delicious!!! We customized their green papaya salad to be spicy and they made it so fiery... BOMB!! Would recommend. On the other hand, the menu indicated the the grilled 5-spiced chicken would be spicy, it wasn't. I still enjoyed it though. We went here on Easter Sunday for lunch and even though it was busy, they were able to seat us quickly. We also had the option to sit inside or outside and chose the latter. The server was very attentive and being extra hungry, we ordered the spring rolls, pork chop platter, and large dried noodles with shrimp. The rolls were on the smaller side but yummy and fresh. I should have ordered a large pork chop because the sauce was delicious. The large noodles were not only tasty but also easy to share and the portion was very large. We also ordered two bubble teas and veggie glass noodles. The hot honeydew drink was sweet and delicious; the cold taro was another refreshing pleasant surprise. Some solid Vietnamese food. But I have had multiple instances where their hours are not at all accurate of when they are willing to serve food. They have denied taking new orders in person or sitting new customers an hour before their quoted closing time. Twice I have had them cancel DoorDash orders with 30 minutes left before they close on DoorDash, which is 30 minutes before they actually close anyway. I totally understand being short staffed or wanting to close earlier, but if you don't make your times accurate to when you are actually available for service it makes a customer unwilling to even try and order. read more

They missed my order not once but 3 times - burnt fried chicken dumpling (yes it's supposed to be fried but should it be burned, too! See picture...) Wanted pho in the Monterey area and there aren't many options so we went here. Had the pho dac biet and it was not good at all. The broth tasted like it came from a pho packet as opposed to being made the traditional way. The meat tasted like it had been in the freezer too long. Ugh . . . Vegans beware! They served my "vegan" wonton noodle soup with the regular pork wontons! Luckily I spit it out in time but I had sipped the broth already. They had guaranteed me that it was the vegetable broth and not the pork broth, but considering the new soup they brought out tasted different, I seriously doubt that to be true. Why would you have a whole page of vegan food if you're not even going to be careful about it? That should have been my first tip that this place was not authentic. It absolutely is not. What Vietnamese restaurant serves broccoli in their soup? The Pho Tai broth was thin, according to my husband. It came out with red onions in it! The kids enjoyed the spring rolls though. Everything was edible, but not very good. I also ordered a banh me sandwich to go. Which they brought out not ready for to go. I asked the kid if it had a liver pâté in it. Never in my life have I waited 20 minutes (half way into the meal) for a pinche boba (how are there 7 people behind the counter and only 1 boba person. 4. The wait staff didn't know what they were out of... after waiting 20 minutes for his lemonade... we find out there is no lemonade.. so no other options were provided.. just a "sorry to bad so sad" 5. Where was the water? 25 minutes into our meal, we get water.. really? 6. We were never voluntarily checked on.. we always had to flag down a wait staff/ our "server" 7. We finally went up to the register and grabbed the check... This is the first time all year where we didn't leave a tip... There is no excuse for crappy service considering the ratio of servers to customers they had... Ill give this place a few months and then come back... then again.. if they have been open since July and their service still isn't hashed out.. that is a little scary. read more

Wanted to check this place out since the family wanted soup to warm our bodies in this cold Monterey weather. Glad we came here cause what we ordered was yummy so we ordered it to go to take back to our hotel ( due to Covid ) Husband and I ordered the wonton soup and man did they pack the to go bowl with some amazing fresh vegetables and other ingredients, underneath it all was rice noodles, the broth and wonton came in a separate container. Daughter ordered the chicken udon and we also ordered a side of fried tofu. We were very pleased with our dinner and will def consider coming back to warm our bellies upon our next visit back. Chopstix is one of our go-to spots for lunch after scuba diving, and we love it! The service is great and the food hits the spot. I've had the beef brisket pho, spring rolls, smoothies, Thai iced tea, and Vietnamese iced coffee. It's all DELICIOUS! We usually sit outside on the covered patio, which is great for air flow with COVID. They have 1 restroom that is out the front door and with a separate door code. Came in her after a hike and ate everything before I could take a photo. Tofu, hella good, crunchy outside soft inside that melts in your mouth. Feels like lava is you are impatient, don't burn your mouth. Pork rolls are good and so are the popcorn fish. If you are looking for an appetizer, go with tofu, and the pork rolls, fish for last. All of them were good, but the tofu is so damn good it reminded my of what my family makes. For the entreé I got the chostix special pho combo. Good stuff for the general pho craving. 5/5. read more
