Mexicali vegan salad. "Bread" is tortilla.
    Megan S.

So I came in for lunch.. And after putting in my order and watching them make my food.. I was so angry with the place, I was ready to come back to computer and give this place a horrible review.. Got back to work, sat down at desk and the food was actually really good, so I am going with a four star. What happen was, I went in about 1pm. The place was packed and loud. The staff pulled us through very quickly which was okay, but it was so streamlined and it was so loud, they didn't really take the explain the menu or listen to what I ordered. I got a mexicali vegan salad. I wanted to order side of tempeh too, but the second I said the salad the staff person took off making the salad, never looked at me and started taking next persons order when she passed the bowl off to next person. I asked for it not chop't which I don't think they heard. So they mixed it together, which again isn't a big deal, but it starts to oxidize the food and lowers nutritional value. I asked for dressing on the side. Red Wine Vinegar. The guy fills this silo cup of vinaigrette. And I have to re ask for vinegar. I ask for only half the size container because the vinaigrette container was too much.. but they still filled it up all the way. Again really not an issue, but I don't like waste. The guy had also chop't into his hand.. and well he had a glove on and blood usually doesn't bother me, he probably should have had a bandaid on it so customers didn't have to see red. Then I asked for the Tempeh. And it comes in the tiny silo container, same one as salad dressing. For the price of the add on, I was expecting it to be a bigger portion. They ask if I want bread and gave me this paper thin piece of aluminum foil, to which my initial response was that is the tiniest, unbread like portion of bread I have ever seen. So I got back to my desk, the thin bread piece was actual a wheat tortilla. Pretty good. My salad tasted fine. The small portion of tempeh was actually fairly filling. So I think I was quick to judge. But I'm not going back at lunch time again when it is so loud. If staff wasn't so rushed and could actually hear me, i would have had a much better experience.

Having been a big fan of chop't throughout my years in college in DC- I was ecstatic to find out that there was one just a few block from my office! One thing to note is that even though the address is 100 Park Ave- the entrance is actually not on Park as it's an office building. You have to walk around park to 40th street and the entrance is halfway down the block. That being said- this location is great- very mean and modern and there is a HUGE space for waiting. (big plus in comparison to the Just salad a few blocks away) At least while you're waiting in line- you don't feel like you're always in someone's way. The line also moved incredibly fast as they have so many chopping/prep stations. Food tastes the same as what I remember from my college days!

Yummy ingredients that I paid for.... Where are you hiding :(

Chop't!!! Come on!!! I paid enough for a good salad and all I got was... a bowl of lettuce? I ordered an NYC Streetcart salad which was supposed to have: FreeBird chicken shawarma, cauliflower radish tabbouleh, roasted tomatoes, English cucumbers, pita chips, romaine & purple cabbage. I admit, that sounds like a DELICIOUS salad so props to Chop't for a creative menu. However... the execution wasn't very good. They skimped out on all those yummy ingredients I was promised. A bowl comprised of 90% romaine :( Speed of delivery was quick but I'd rather get a real salad!

    Bug inside my salad...

The bowls are pretty substantive and they have lighter starters/sides too for those who just want to dabble. You can choose one of their signature bowls (the Tibetan Mama, with its satisfying curry base, comes highly recommended), or build your own from a lineup of bases, sauces, toppings, dressings and garnishes. The food tastes fresh and clean, and I include this place in my rotation of healthy quick salad/bowl/vegetarian meal options in the neighborhood. I love that they have raw vegan treats, an increasingly rare find since several of my favorite raw vegan spots in the city closed down over the years. I'll admit I was first lured in by the antiquey aesthetic and the colorful vintage florals, but the food and environment are both very pleasurable.

It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. I would return to Friedman's when I'm in the Herald Square area, or check out one of their other locations in the city.

Beyond Sushi was in Midtown near where I was staying, so I ended up coming here---on Valentine's Day, which happened to be a mistake! Since I didn't have a reservation, the lady who checked me in told me I had to find a seat at the bar. Her attitude was not the best, as when I looked over the menu and made a decision on what I wanted to get, she dismissed me when I waved her over, saying she is not the person taking orders. Um, okay? Then who is? One guy at the bar was nicer, and was able to take my order. I started off with a hot tea since NYC was cold in February, and then decided to have as much as I could of two dishes---the "chicken" yakitori skewers and the Korean BBQ skillet. The skewers came in a set of two, with a white mayo-like sauce drizzle and pickled cucumber on the side. Super delectable, though very filling because of the protein! The skillet was made with classic Chunk Foods protein, the go-to plant-based option for all the meat dishes at City Roots restaurants as far as I know. This was incredibly filling, but the sauce and the texture were all around delicious as well. I could NOT bother to finish the brussels sprouts the skillet came with---way too much to stomach, and I was going to focus on the "meats" since I can always have brussels any other time! The bill by the end of it was PRICEY. That's why I only go to one of these restaurants as a special treat when I visit NYC. Watch out if you order hot tea...$13!!
