Wow. What a mixed bag. I like that this is a truly local joint. I LOVE that the owner and its staff embrace the Bend concept of organic, local food with attention to detail. When I arrived, I was pleased with the pleasant outside garden, which I understand is used to harvest many of the herbs used in the various dishes. My waiter, though, seemed to be a little...mmm...."self-medicated." He attempted to serve me before the people next to me, who were seated first. I suggest he get their order first, but then didn't see him for another ten minutes or so. When he did arrive, I ordered the chicken fried steak (created from beef from a local rancher), and requested a side of buttermilk biscuit instead of the potatoes. He was very accommodating, in his lax kind of way. When my food arrived, I had a small portion of chicken fried steak,a biscuit that was more...mm....corn-bread like than buttermilk, and eggs over-easy. Yolks so soft it flooded my plate with yellow. I didn't specify, but he didn't ask how I wanted my eggs. Way over-easy seems an odd default choice, but okay.... The steak was incredibly good though. Very well seasoned, nicely breaded, and very flavourful. The biscuit wasn't what I expected, or even...really wanted, but was quite good nonetheless. My waiter stopped by and made his pleasantries, but then a (I believe) manager stopped to ask how things were. I said, "Pretty good. I mean, good." She queried, "Only pretty good?" I mentioned that the eggs were not how I preferred them, but since I never specified, I wasn't really complaining. She asked how I liked them, then said, "I'm sure you were never really asked how you wanted them." Ten minutes later, I had a couple of fried eggs in front of me. My waiter came by, checked on me, and apologized as well. My refills were kind of slow in coming...and the food was exquisite, but there wasn't very much of it. It's hard to tell what I Think of CHOW....I enjoyed the food, but I was kind of eager to leave. I kind of what to go back again and see how everything is. I wish them success...I just wish I wasn't, like, supposed to be honoured by their attention to me. read more

Fresh, creative, and oh so good. They have fantastic breakfast available all day. You can always find something decadently sweet, but I always go for the meatier options. I had been waiting about 15 years to finally visit Bend and it was just as beautiful as I imagined. Chow was the perfect introduction to what life in Bend would be like, if I decided to move there. This little restaurant is nestled between tall trees in a cabin-like building filled with art, antiques and stained glass inside. We went there for breakfast one lovely Sunday morning in September. There was a small wait before we could be seated but there is a self-service coffee bar and a spacious front yard filled with chairs for soaking in the warm morning sun. We were seated after about 20 minutes and we got a table inside facing a beautiful stained-glass window. You can also choose to sit outside on their deck. There was a fireplace near our table and the whole place was decorated with funky art and antiques. It felt very bohemian and cozy. The food was amazing. They are very flexible with their breakfast menu and actually encourage you to suggest substitutions and make special requests. They accommodate those who are gluten-free, vegan, raw-only, vegetarian, etc. I had the 'Eggs ala Med' dish and it was scrumptious. It was two poached eggs over crispy herb polenta with spinach and roasted pepper hollandaise. Service was polite and attentive. They are very family-friendly. Food came out quickly. If I am lucky enough to get to go back to Bend for a visit, I'll definitely go to Chow again. read more

This place is as good as it gets for Pac NW food. We eat here every time we are in Bend (which is every year) and we are never disappointed. Great place for breakfast in Bend! We came here based off of a list of the Top Ten Restaurants in Bend that I found on Pinterest. The staff was very friendly! There was a 30 min wait on a Friday morning but it wasn't bad because they had a musician outside to entertain everyone. We were asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. We said whichever one would be faster. It was a beautiful day in Bend so why wouldn't we want to sit outside right? Well, when they sat us outside we were sat under this beautiful tree that rained these little bugs all over us and our table. We had bugs that fell into my coffee, in my hair and I was still finding them on me when we left the restaurant. Now, I know that this is not their fault so I will not punish them in their star rating for that. My tip for Yelpers would be to sit inside or at least not under the trees. Unless you don't mind little ladybug babies in your coffee! Despite the bugs, the food was amazing and they had plenty of options. Amazing food, but first a note to other brunch goers. Go, eat, drink, then bloody leave! I watched two tables who took up a 6 top and a 4 top be done with brunch during prime brunch hour sit there and talk for 1 hour (not an exaggeration). Doing this not only is mean to other guests who are hungry and waiting, but really mean to the staff and workers and businesses who rely on the boom times for their business and living. The staff did everything they could to make the customers leave without just kicking them out, and if this was prior to online reviews I'm sure they would have. /rant over onto the food. I had the Ala ceaser and it was so good. My wife had the corned beef hash, and at first I was unimpressed by just the beef, then I got a bite with the amazing potatoes and the drizzle and other flavors and was floored. We have eaten at CHOW's twice now. I love the quality of the food ingredients and flavors are really very good (creative menu too). Today we had to wait 1.5 hrs. for a table, but they don't serve outside this time of year and are very limited in seating inside, but we live 4 hrs away and enjoyed our meal so much last time we just had to tough it out. I love that they have free coffee to keep us hydrated and there is a sweet little watering hole (bar) before you enter the front door- a tiny room w/ even a couple seats. Our waitress was very nice, got us our drinks right away and we ordered from the brunch menu. I got side items: a crab cake, cheesy polenta and wanted to share a side of taters w/ my partner who ordered the 14 hr. marinated corned beef in a hash dish. My polenta was OH SOOO YUMMY! Super fluffy and creamy polenta. Just perfect! My crab cake was pretty disappointing. It was more like a bread cake w/ flecks of minced carrots and the crab was pretty shredded to the point of not being able to tell how much was in the cake. It tasted like crab, but I'm pretty picky about wanting a good amt. of crab in my crab cake. I won't order that again. The taters were ok. Nice caramelized onions in cubes of roasted potatoes. My partner got the corned beef hash w/ two eggs over the top of the hash. Super dish!! Nice chunks of flavorful corned beef, the eggs were very tasty (nice orange yolks). He loved his dish. I was contemplating giving this place 5 stars because I really love it so much and I go here as much as I can, but each time there is something that goes wrong. Time before last I had to wait 20 minutes after sitting to get my drink order in. The busboy kept coming up and realizing my girlfriend and I hadn't been helped yet and kept asking a server but the place was really busy. Then the server came up and sincerely apologized. They really did care, which was nice. Then we ordered some more drinks and it took forever to get them, but they were delicious. Short review: On the weekends, you can expect to wait to get a table and for your server to respond, that being said, the drinks and food are amazing!!!!! it is pretty expensive though. I had the Special Benedict which was incredible but it was $18 and there wasn't a price anywhere until I saw the check. I'll still come here each time I come to Bend though. read more

My boyfriend and I were in Oregon for a road trip and happened to come across this cute little restaurant for brunch. We weren't expecting much, but we got a really great treat! The restaurant was pretty packed and it was pretty loud and a little warm inside, but that wasn't really a problem for us. We noticed that there was also an outdoor section for people with dogs! Went for breakfast while looking for real estate properties in June and was very satisfied with some locals telling us to go. Everything was so tasty! It was nice to sit on their outdoor patio and listen to live music. Everyone was so pleasant and sociable, not only did it make for an excellent breakfast but overall outing. This is an awesome dining experience! The host and waitstaff are invested in your meal and care that it lives up to the stellar reputation of Chow! It's a smaller establishment with an hour long wait at 10:30 in the morning on a Tuesday - but the host set our expectations and allowed for call-in reservations. They had a fire going outside with chairs for those of us that had to wait. When the customers sitting in our soon-to-be table were paying, our host searched us out to tell us it wouldn't be much longer. The food was amazing; portions were just right, temperature and preparations were perfect. They create their own sauces and they complemented our food so well. Very fresh and very awesome! It was 15min before we were greeted and another 5 or so before we were seated but I noticed it is tiny tiny inside so I bet there capacity is not great. I got my free yelp coffee but it had some grounds in it and it was just regular drip coffee-I guess what do you want it's free after all. I ordered the homemade biscuits and gravy (sausage) and let me tell you that this was when I was won over. The gravy was thick and so tasty. The biscuit was clearly homemade and was baked perfectly-no salt or pepper needed and I had to make myself stop. Visited here while in town to see family. We arrived around 9:30am on a Sunday and only waited a few minutes. We chose to sit on the patio and it was lovely. Inside was warmer and crowded but still nice. Jennifer, our waitress was amazing. We also got to meet the owner, Sean. Both were helpful, kind and engaging. Jennifer was honest about the menu, and answered all of our questions about the food and drink appropriately. I have eaten many eggs Benedict in my lifetime and by far these are some of the most creative and light ones that I've ever experienced. The sauce is not heavy but compliments the food. Their house potatoes are to die for and they offer three different kinds of specialty sauce is made in house that accentuate the flavors. Sorry, perhaps this was an off day but the food I had was truly HORRIBLE today. First off, the other 2 people in my party got their food but I did not, for about 20 min after they were served. I ordered a warm grain salad with quinoa, farro, and bulgar and when I eventually got it after this long delay there was zero farro and zero bulgar in it but had what looked like an ENTIRE CAN of black beans in it. WTF? I mentioned it to the waiter and he sort of sheepishly said yeah, we're low on warm grains today. No offer to let me order something else, no mention that they were essentially out of the item I ordered, no offer to take it off my bill, nothing! It was insane. I usually speak up in situations like this but did not today. I will never go back here -- it seemed to me to really be a poor quality place. read more
