Never stop here for anything. Stopped for a cup of chowder and crab cakes after a day at the coast. Chowder was horrible- had a flavor consistent with a powdered base. Combine that with stale packaged oyster crackers, the measly cup of soup couldn't even be finished due to the horrible flavor. No fresh celery or onions were in the chowder. Garlic bread was warm and heavily seasoned- decent for an accompaniment to a meal, but shouldn't have been the best thing about it. As for the crab cakes, I've had better, and I've had worse. Not a ton of flavor without the cocktail sauce, which by the way is ketchup based (not chili sauce based). If considering this place, drive on. There has to be something better out there than what was served at the Chowder Bowl in Depoe Bay. And by the way- they are not affiliated with the delightful Chowder Bowl in Newport, OR. This restaurant surprised us. We were really tired and hungry from hiking all morning and wanted some great food. Most of the restaurants did not open until noon so we decided to stop in. The place looks basic, almost like a pub - but clean and orderly. The menu looked great, so we decided to try it. So glad we did. My husband had grilled oysters - very fresh, they had just arrived at the restaurant - outstanding - best he has ever had. I had "The Neptune" - OMG - I was in heaven - it is a mix of scallops, dungeness crab, halibut, prawns, clams in a wine mushroom sauce. Outstanding and a very large portion for the price. We were late into town due to a new and apparently cruddy gps. Decided to grab dinner here as the place attached to our hotel would be closed by the time we got there. We almost missed this one too, arriving ten minutes before close. We were told no seating inside, tho there was a couple seated at a table eating. That was fine, we wanted to-go. They had a bunch of hand sanitizer bottles on a table by the door and at the counter. The waitress was clearly ready to go home, which we totally got :) She was wearing a mask, but had it pulled under her nose so.... They were out of chowder and several other things, again closing time so no biggie. I got the Ruben and fries and it was deeeelish. My friend got fish n chips- but cod and onion rings. The o rings were great but the cod was soggy and oily. The salad was fine, she liked the variety of greens. At around $20 we did expect the fish to be better. When they do 'open' the dining room, there is a train that circles a track up by the ceiling and lots of beachy things on the walls. Kids will enjoy, but I too enjoyed the train :) We waited 27 circles for the food. Don't know if that is good or bad but it kept me distracted. read more

Nothing fancy, but you will be beyond happy that you chose "The Chowder Bowl" in Depoe Bay. The food (had the Captains Platter) was perfectly prepared and all is made fresh and by hand. No frozen seafood at this place. The chef here knows exactly what they are doing. Perfectly breaded Oysters, Scallops, Shrimp, etc. Delicious with a capital "D"!!!! And very generous portions. Stopped in for a quick dinner as other places had a long wait. With impatient kids it was convenient. Kids had Mac & cheese which looked like the cheap Kraft brand. If you're vacationing around Depot Bay, stop in here. The food here is excellent! I had the tuna melt, it was perfect. No extra stuff in the tuna salad. Sandwich was crispy and hot. The fries are awesome too. I also ordered the mozzarella sticks, which were great. Not very many places serve mozzarella battered, they serve breaded. I live battered and was excited when I saw them. The server was very personal. After being ID'd for beverages, he called us by our first names. The Reuben looked really good. I was a little worried when they gave a spoon that wasn't so clean. Waitress quickly got me a clean one though when I asked for a new one. After my first bite of the clam chowder, I forgot about the awkward beginning. This was the best clam chowder I have had. I also got a shrimp melt sandwich, and that too was disappointing. I opened the sandwich and noticed it had 1 melted slice of Kraft singles that did not cover the width of the bread. Also, they scooped the shrimp on to the bread without spreading it on the bread. This poorly constructed sandwich looked unappealing. The service was also poor. Wife's Cobb Salad was minus many of the ingrrdients including eggs, they substituted Avacado. They were running out of ingredients (probably why they gave me Cod instead of the Halibut). I mentioned the cold Crab Cakes to thr server. She offered 1/2 off, I just agreed to pay for it, what I really wanted is for her to put the Crab Cakes in the microwave and heat them up. This weekend we revisited the Chowder Bowl in Depot Bay. Long ago we had some wonderful simple meals there. I'm afraid to say those days appear to be no more. The last few times we've been there, over the course of the last year or two, things have gone downhill. It was never a fancy place, but it's gone from simple to beyond shabby. We were concerned going into Chowder Bowl to begin with because it's pretty gross on the inside. The waitress - who clearly was having the worst day of her life - tossed menus on our table and wandered off. No hello, no I'll be right with you....and it appear this is a recurring theme at this place. We all played it safe and got chili and BLT sandwiches. The BLT sandwiches weren't bad - you can't mess those up. The fries tasted like the fish which isn't unusual considering they probably deep fry them in the oil. The fries were good, but would have been better if they weren't fishy. Chilli was clearly Nalley's from a can. I can honestly say that the waitress did not smile ONCE during our entire time there. Not one. single. time. Despite our attempts to ask how her day was going...just wasn't happening. Just spare yourself a poor experience and drive to Lincoln City. Always wondered about this Chowder! On the Depoe Bay Waterfront is such a swell location. Staff was nice. We only got Chowder... but it wasn't very flavorful, we thought. It should at least taste more like seafood and have clams that aren't chewy like out of a can. I had to spit a bunch out. This is what I figure - IF Chowder is in your name of the venue - it's should be pretty dang good!!!! Right? Not only that - but shouldn't you serve more than one kind? Had a great meal here on Sunday. We came in right before closing, but the very friendly staff encouraged us to take our time and enjoy our meal. They turned the TV to soccer for us which we really appreciated. The beer was cold and the food was cooked to perfection. Good chowder and delicious fried fish and shrimp! As a native Oregonian, we've always eaten at the other notable chowder restaurant. However, a co-worker swears by the chowder at the Chowder Bowl, so we decided to stop in for a late lunch in the afternoon. We didn't have a problem getting a table since it was in between meals. The waitress was very friendly, and answered any questions we had about the menu options. The chowder was extremely delicious - much more creamy than most clam chowders I have had. The garlic bread was also tasty and really big. We enjoyed the meal - two bowls of chowder and bread. Went Jan/31/2016 - Around 1PM-ish Have heard so much good about this place and finally decided to go with my parents. We've been wanting to for awhile but haven't had a chance. We all got the Cannon Bowls of Chowder (clam chowder in bread bowls). It was so good. There were big pieces of clams and big chunks of potatoes. It wasn't as thick as I like; but I added some crackers and was fine (my parents thought the thickness of it was perfect). The servers were amazing! As is tradition our family stops here each summer at the end of our beach vacation - today we had lunch here and I was really disappointed. I love the chowder and it was good as always, but the service was poor. Every server is entitled to a bad day, but in the competitive summer restaurant season you would hope to feel like you were wanted in the establishment. We have been here 4 times in 3 years. The first time was on my Honeymoon, every time since including today is because of the wonderful people who work there and the awesome food! Their chowder is amazing, its not too thick and not watery/runny. Their tuna melts are perfectly toasted everytime and the fries are battered very lightly and always golden brown and crispy. The kids menu includes the usual hot dogs, burgers and corndogs as well as kids size portions of fish, shrimp and seafood! Delicious food. Hands down the worst clam chowder I have ever tasted in my life. My canned claimed chowder taste better than this did. I should have listened to the reviews but I figured how bad can it be if that is literally their name. We have had Dory Cove and Mo's claimed chowder so really wanted to try another big spot. The Chowder Bowl is usually very good for a quick lunch while shopping in Depoe Bay. However, today it was disappointing. They have a new item on the menu - scallops and chips! I was so excited! So of course, I ordered them. I DO NOT recommend getting them fried! They were swimming in oil, and the batter was so soggy that it fell off in a gross mess, and I refused to eat more than just a few. Granted, I know that when things are fried, they're naturally oily. But this was disgusting. If you do order the scallops and chips, get them sautéed. At least the fries and chowder were great as usual. Don't let this review stop you from coming here, though. There are several items on the menu that are very good. Just try to avoid the fried scallops and chips. Unless you want to ingest a bunch of grease and oil. read more

Stopped here on a trip with my kids and it wasn't that great. The clam chowder needed some help - chewy clams and more seasoning or flavor. My daughter had the fish and chips and it wasn't that great but she liked the garlic bread. Her fiance had the fried scallops and said they were okay. I had the clams which were in thick garlic butter (could have used some wine with it) and the garlic bread was soaked in so much butter it was soggy. My son's was probably the best...the seafood pasta -- had lots of large halibut chunks, prawns, bay scallops and bay shrimp, loads of cheese and cream sauce. It was so rich, they could easily serve half a portion and knock down the $24 price. The waitress was obviously stressed because I think she was the only one there (they had a sign in the window for cooks, servers and table bussers), she brought out two chowders instead of salads and the bus boy was slamming and breaking dishes when he cleaned up. For what we got, it was expensive....ate at Rogue Public House along the dock in Newport the day before and for the same total bill cost, the food was far better than Chowder Bowl.
