I heard about the place and gave it a shot. Since it is a curry place that is what I ordered. They have you place the order via an iPad. I went with the wagyu curry (smaller one). The rice and curry come in separate bowls. The curry flavor was good. The beef was cut a little too big for me but quality was good. Thre is also potatoes and carrots in the curry. They sort of pack the rice into the bowl so some of it got clumpy. I did not like the grilled broccoli. That did not seem to work for me. read more

A good amount of food selection including sushi, curry, udon, katsu, drinks, and more. Our server Jason Was attentive and friendly! The parking was a bit hard to navigate and get a spot. The inside of the restaurant is clean and calm. Would visit this location again! I also prefer this location more than the BH one cause there are more menu items. read more

This place is AMAZING! First of all, the vibes in here are immaculate. It's a small restaurant space with a good amount of large and super comfortable booths as well as a bar area. Think - modern contemporary Japan! I loved the interior design. The food was outstanding, all of it! Well worth the price in my opinion. We got the wagyu dumplings (keep in mind these do take a moment to cook so you might get your entree before getting them), as well as our own curry plates. I got the tonkotsu and my boyfriend got the chicken curry - both mild. If you like spicy, this will be a very comfortable spice for you, but if you want a grand kick, get the level 3 spice. UPDATE: I have my credit card statement that shows that I placed a duplicate order through pick up. I came and paid with my card and I only received the phone order. I was not even aware of the grub hub one, the guy at the desk said nothing. I made this very clear to the Chubby Curry and they did not want to make it right. I was physically there to get my food and they didn't mention the duplicate grubhub order, only the one I placed through the phone. The order was $39, and Chubby Curry has lost my business and any friends and family I would ever recommend going here because they just wouldn't make it right. -/- Grubhub placed a duplicate order here and I never received my order. The restaurant knew this and confirmed my order was never picked up but yet they never called me that day. So when I called , they confirmed that yes, no one ever came to pickup the order and they offered me a 20% off coupon even thought they knew damn well they ate my food!! Pretty dishonest. Also, they use American Wagyu. The unicorn roll is pretty disappointing, you could get better elsewhere for the same price. read more

First time here! Ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry at a medium spice level. Can never go wrong with it! Chicken was super crispy and the curry paired so well with it. They also had chili oil which made it even better! Our attendant was super helpful as well! Always checking in, making sure we were comfortable and had a nice experience. The food and service was amazing. We were immediately seated and taught how to use the iPad to order. I liked the photos of the food on the menu. We got the eel, tamago, and cheese rice bowl and the tonkatsu curry. The eel bowl was so flavorful and yummy. The egg was nicely cooked. And the curry was super yummy. The katsu was so crispy and fresh and I loved the sauce on the cabbage! Also they refilled the water so fast and are really attentive to customers. I came here for lunch with my family for the first time and the food was delicious. Service was friendly too. We'll def be back. Each of us enjoyed our different meals. I ordered the gyudon and was so glad I did. The meat was marinated well, loved the crunch from the fried onions, and I appreciated the added flavors from the slow cooked soft egg, ginger, and green onion. I would definitely order this again. Ah, another Chubby store that focus on wagyu beef. This one is very different since the concept is not all you can eat hot pot or kbbq, and it's a bit farther than the other usual locations like in Rowland Heights or Temple City that are more central location of SGV. Nonetheless, we were excited to find Chubby Curry near where we live and decided to give it a try. Nestled in the heart of downtown Covina, there are street parking available a short walk away, depending on the time of the week you visit. Chubby Curry is on the main street, and have 2 stories with a sushi bar on the first floor. It was quite interesting that they were serving sushi along with curry options. My husband got the chicken katsu and wagyu beef curry, whereas I just wanted to get the Gyu-don. They have so many other options we wanted to try, such as their hand rolls and their wagyu burger. Since I'm avoiding raw food, I'll just have to return next time to see how their sashimi is. I really liked their gyu-don, but of course it was on the fatty side. My husband liked the wagyu curry, but would probably have opted out of the chicken katsu next time. Overall positive experience. While we do definitely prefer the other chubby locations for its premium experience, we're glad to have Chubby Curry as a low-cost option for us to get our wagyu-beef fixins! read more

Of what seems to be a smaller restaurant than expected, Chubby Curry had a good selection of foods to try. We had the fries, wagyu steak plate, and a side order of the katsu. The batter used for the katsu was great and fluffy! Aside from the wagyu itself, I thought the curry was nothing too special. Ambiance was casual, however service was slow and inattentive at the time of visit during a Saturday lunch. Not entirely sure if that was due to only having iPads or lack of staffing but we struggled to get attention to pay for the bill as well. Overall, I'd recommend to try the food at least once for experience, but be prepared to be patient! read more

The only 2 complains are with the drink, that glass is way too small for the price tag and it tasted weak for a cocktail. And the egg in the eel rice bowl was a bit too sweet and dense. What I had: - Waffle fries w/aonori ($9) - Wagyu dumplings w/ponza ($9) - Wagyu curry ($23) - Chicken katsu kare ($21) - Yuzu cocktail (can't recall the price) How it tasted: - I genuinely enjoyed everything I received with the exception of the dumplings. For some reason they were off-putting, but the fries and spicy curry were absolutely delicious. Why did I give it a five? - The service is always on point. Each dish arrived with relative promptness even when busy. Additionally, the prices seemed fair for what you receive. Overall a solid experience. I had the Wagyu Beef Curry and they are very generous with their meat portion. The wagyu melts in your mouth and the brisket in the sauce is tender. However, I feel thay their sauce could do better. 4/5 The seafood/sushi items were really good quality. My favorite is the Waygue burger. It's juice and messy but taste great. Gyudon is great with fried shallots/onion to add nice crunch texture, wish the beef is a little bigger. Katsu curry, katsu has nice crunch and not too much coating, the curry sauce has a nice spicy bite but wish it can be more thicker in texture. Cubby Curry is the absolute best! It is mine and my Fiancées FAV date night spot! He always gets the udon curry ( which noodles aren't my thing but the curry sauce is always so sweet and buttery) I always get the Chicken Tonkatsu and it is delicious! I visited this spot on a Friday night around 6:30, and it wasn't too crowded at first, though it did get busier as we went along. There were a lot of takeout orders coming in, which shows it's popular for that too! The ordering system is unique--you place your order on an iPad, and they confirm everything with you before sending it to the kitchen. The Wagyu was really impressive; I was worried it might be thick and chewy, but it was tender and flavorful. The crab roll was fresh and delicious as well. The food here is very mid. First do not and I repeat do not order the kids butter who don't. It is nine dollars for literally what they charge for a three dollar side of udon and a pad of butter. The Wagyu beef rice bowl has absolutely no flavor And the Wagyu beef is tough. It's probably like a cheap cut from their other chubby restaurants that they're using and sending here. The curry dishes were nothing special. The inside the car is nice. Service is just so so as it's a little bit more fast casual. The service is fast - they have a kiosk for take out orders. I also came on a quiet Tuesday night so we were seated right away and they had plenty of seats. As for the food, we ordered the Wagyu Chubby Curry and the Chirashi bowl. The Wagyu Chubby Curry is light and creamy at the same time, with good chunks of potatoes, carrots, and meat. The chirashi bowl had some of the most generous portions of fish that I've seen. Will definitely come back! read more

The Gyudon bowl is my favorite thing from this food place. It is full of flavor and not the flavor does not get boring like most gyudon bowls become. The sushi hand rolls are also really good. The fish is really fresh and tastes amazing which was surprising at first. I thought the curry was also decently good but the curry flavor itself is slightly not as good as other curry places. Had dinner here on a Friday and was seated promptly. The staff gave good service but it was annoying that all three of us had to share one tablet to see the menu and order. It would have been nice to have had three menus and the tablet to order on. The restaurant is decorated rather tacky for an Asian theme restaurant with lots of action figures. The service was good and the staff were responsive but the food was inexcusable. All the fried items (tonkatsu, chicken katsu, chicken karaage, and shrimp tempura) were mediocre in taste. Katsu portions were good but the shrimp were very small. All three curry dishes that were ordered were mediocre in taste. The upsetting part is that they were all served lukewarm. The vegetable curry was almost cold. It was served on a small cast iron skillet but was only slightly warmer than room temperature. A few of the vegetables were not cooked through and were not even fresh. Curry sauces should be served hot and the taste of these dishes was negatively impacted. They would have tasted average if they came out hot. All the dishes came out quickly which is great but I would rather wait for hot food. The booth we sat in had a loose backrest. Every time the customers behind us moved it caused us to get shaken forward. Not a good dining experience. read more

Reservation was easily made a week in advance. However, when I arrived there was a long line for people waiting for to go orders. A separate line for to go orders would be helpful for those just waiting to check in or put their name down. I liked the booth seating and being able to see into part of the kitchen. For some reason there wasn't any chicken curry that night? And our waiter didn't stop by to answer any questions. You put in your order on the tablet and pay at the front at the end of your meal. One of the BEST Japanese curry I have ever had. We were greeted as soon as we entered. I like that we were able to order from a tablet. We were able to take our time and actually go through the menu. Chicken Katsu Curry. Mild. AMAZING. The curry was just perfect. Wagyu dumplings. DELICIOUS. You get serviced a bit of sauce but honestly it's good without it too. So soft on the inside. It doesn't have a flour taste to the dumpling wrapper. Chicken karage. I don't know what kind of sauce was on top of it but it was soooooo good! The chicken I believe they used uncooked chicken because when you bite into it, it's so moist. The outside is crunchy and the inside so soft. So much juice. The waffle fries. Ugh. 4.5/5 The food here was really good and it makes sense that it's part of the chubby line. The only thing that was a little lacking was service but to be fair they had just opened up and there was only one waiter for the whole first floor and one waiter at the bar. And it seems like the waiters who worked upstairs also had to run their food using the same staircase as the guests which led for a little traffic. I advise the team at chubby to maybe employ some more staff during weekends because it seems there's always a long line and long wait. I believe the table in front of ours even made some snide remarks about how they hadn't gotten their water yet, personally the waiter was very nice and attentive to me and my boyfriend but that's probably also cause we walked in at 4:30-4:45 a little too early for dinner and too late for lunch, so not a lot of people were eating yet but as the clock struck 6 people started to flood in and the workers seemed a little stretch thin. Overall I think the food was very good my boyfriend and I ordered a couple dishes to share together we had 4 hand rolls - salmon, yellow tail, blue crab and scallop & uni I believe. Out of the 4 they ranked: 1) both yellowtail and salmon can't really go wrong for price and size 2) scallop and uni a little expensive 3) blue hand roll- skip completely was definitely not worth the price tag and was too mushy The curry was really good though we would definitely recommend and be back for the curry but maybe skip on all the sushi next time. read more

Came for a large dinner gathering and luckily they were able to accommodate us. I arrived at 4:50pm to put a name down for a table for 10. They quoted me 20-30 minutes but it ended up taking a whole hour. Luckily everyone arrived around 5:40pm so we didn't have to wait long. I ordered their cold tofu, salmon, and unagi hand roll. All were delicious! They have a gender neutral restroom that's spacious and clean. Parking is street parking only, but there's a community parking lot in the back. Service is quick and friendly and you can order everything on their ipad. read more

My friend and I came here on a Sunday for lunch and were seated properly. We ordered a Wagyu dumpling for our appetizer, a tonkatsu curry, and the sliced wagyu curry. The Wagyu dumplings weren't spectacular, but had a decent beefy flavor to it. The tonkatsu was lightly breaded and very fluffy which I enjoyed. The sliced Wagyu curry was the star of the show. severely understaffed. Also there was much service being provided. So I'm not going to tip more than what is deserved. You order through an iPad. But no description of what the item you're selecting, literally going by the picture on the iPad. Extremely stuffy inside, like how are you going to serve spicy curry and have the restaurant feel like a giant oven. Only good thing is the place is dog friendly. I'm assuming they have more tables upstairs but I don't even want to imagine how hot it is upstairs. Bonus plus is you can get in the Yelp waitlist before arriving so you're not waiting forever for a table. read more

I recently visited The Chubby Curry, which opened in the former location of Bishamon--a Japanese restaurant I absolutely loved and deeply miss. I came here with a group for a colleague's birthday, and while there were some positives, my overall experience was underwhelming. First, the good: the staff was incredibly accommodating and gave us a private room upstairs for our celebration, which was a nice touch. The ambiance was pleasant, and everything looked clean and well-maintained. Our server was very kind and attentive, going out of their way to try and improve our experience. Now, the not-so-good: the food just wasn't for me. I ordered the Katsu Curry, which was around $25, and added sides like broccoli, mushrooms, fries, dumplings, and more. While the presentation was nice, nothing really stood out flavor-wise. For the price, I was expecting a lot more in terms of quality and taste. I also requested the hottest spice level for my curry, but it was disappointingly mild. To their credit, the server brought me a sauce from the back that added some much-needed heat, but even with that, the dish didn't live up to my expectations. While I think curry lovers might still enjoy this place, I found it overpriced and the food mediocre overall. I just put this restaurant on my list yesterday and we decided to go today and we are so glad we did. The staff is super friendly and attentive. After seating us they showed us how to order from a tablet. The food is described along with a picture. You pick your items and send it to the kitchen and the food comes out a lot faster than most restaurants. I had Chubby Curry wagyu beef plate with tri-tip. The slow-cooked mild curry beef just melted in your mouth so tender and came with rice and a soft egg. My wife and I shared a house salad, slaw with tomatoes, radish and cucumber. They comfortably accommodated about 60 of our friends and family for a three-hour private restaurant buyout. It was the perfect amount of time to mingle, eat, and play games. They were incredibly accommodating, even allowing our balloon artist to arrive two hours early to set up our decor, along with my best friend who set-up all the decor on the tables. A huge thank you to Calvin, the owner, who helped us curate the perfect menu and made the planning process super easy. Many of our guests were trying Ari's for the first time and loved it so much that they've since returned! Our favorites are the Calamari, Crispy Pork Belly, Tom Kha Kai, Shrimp Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Panang Beef, Thai Tea, and Mango with Sticky Rice. We order these again and again!
