Food was very flavorful and cooked well. Review will be in the photos. Service was great. They even changed the order for my daughter's kids meal to have noodles substituted without any charge. My only complaint would be that I wished they advised us that with the party of 6 or more, that a tip was included already. But that's also our fault that we didn't ask before putting the additional tip. We know for next time. Love the the wooden decor. Made us feel that we were back in Japan.

In the search of a new Friday date-night spot, my husband and I came across chubby curry on Yelp recommendations. We both have never tried Japanese style curry and the pictures looked absolutely delicious. Located in the busy downtown Covina area nightlife is loud and busy, in a good way! If you're looking to park near the restaurant, come with plenty of time as street parking, especially during the night is hard to come across. Although, they do have a parking structure that's just about a block away, which is not much of a walk! It's a very small restaurant with not much seating, but we didn't have to wait much on a Friday night-15 minutes max but they do have a Yelp sign up. If you know you're coming I recommend you do this. We were seated, and I should mention that the hospitality was amazing! My husband and I were well taken care of and all of our questions answered. Whenever we try a new spot that looks as good as this we try to get a little bit of everything. As you see from the pictures, we had lots to try from and I can safely say that I will be back to try a lot more! The food was super juicy, meats were tender, the sushi was delicious...... I left absolutely stuffed! My husband says this is easily one of his new favorite spots :)

After visiting XPOT in Las Vegas, e decided to become a member of the CHUBBY CATTLE GROUP. We were on our way to LA so we searched on YELP for the nearest Chubby Cattle Group restaurant and made sure it had high ratings... CHICKEN KATSU CURRY: 10/10 My expectations were low so I was BLOWN AWAY at how good their CHICKEN KATSU was!! The chicken was so JUICY & TENDER. I usually don't event like eating chicken katsu and I end up eating the curry and rice but, the CHICKEN KATSU WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW... WAGYU GYOZA: 8/10 It was good especially the filling. The texture of the steamed gyoza was really thick. I think I might have like a fried version more... My husband said they have the KATSU breading and the hamburger meat so they can definitely do a katsu burger and curry dish! AKA MENCHI... SERVICE: A+ Our server was such a delight to take to!! He spoke to us as if we've been friends for years!! Made us feel so at home and recommended his favorite dishes to us. We wish him ask the best with his CAREER!!! AMBIANCE: I really felt like I was transported to a cute Japanese cafe and bar. There were wooden booths and a nice demo display of the dishes at the window in the front... We definitely be back in a HURRY for more CHUBBY CURRY!!!!

Doesn't surprise me this is part of the chubby cattle empire because it's DELICIOUS! Had 2 very fresh yellowtail handrolls - they have other ones too - and the wagyu beef bowl. It comes with rice and egg and is a surprisingly big portion. I looooved it, esp the garlic butter which was a nice touch. My friend got the wagyu curry and let me have a bite and it was incredible! A gentle and comforting flavor and generous chunks of beef. Plus rice. Overall, incredible experience & cant wait to return! We didnt wait at all and it had a good amount of parking.

I wanted to like it more. I think the curry is just missing that zing, but overall it is above average. The wagyu is definitely really tender in the curry. It almost melted in your mouth, and was the best part of the meal. I would like if they added more vegetables to the curry. Also got the udon, and it was pretty overall good. They have some deals on weekdays. We might come in during a deal. Just wish the curry had more a zing taste, and it would make this place outstanding. Without that strong taste of curry, this place falls a little short. Service was okay. Good for a date. Has some places to walk around afterwards.

Heard about the chubby chain so thought we'd give this place a try. It was however not satisfactory. If you were expecting Japanese style curry with a deep and rich flavoring, this place is not for you. That's what I was expecting and so was disappointed in my curry. For a party of 4 we order a few dishes to share. We ordered: Tonkatsu Kare: katsu was delicious, good crisp and flavor. Curry lacked flavor and was very light. Curry was thin. Wagyu steak bowl - 10/10 best thing we ordered. Wagyu had very good flavor Wagyu burger - was juicy but lacked a savory flavor Macha bingso - enjoyable and a good size for 4 people. I was happy the matcha flavor had the typical matcha bitterness to it, and did not taste like the sugary fake syrup you get at some restaurants Parking is easy to find and the restaurant seems like it can accommodate quite a few people on the floor above as well. The space is cozy, comfortable and cutely decorated. Probably won't be coming back however, as this style of curry doesn't meet my needs in a curry.

Chubby Curry is a solid 3/5. If you're coming to a Chubby franchise, you'll have to get some kind of meat to go with your curry. All orders are placed on the tablet. My group ordered the Curry Wagyu Steak Ribeye Rice Plate and the Wagyu Burger to share. This place is definitely boogie. Charging $3 to add cheese to a burger is wild. Service was really good. They gave my friend an ice cream mochi for her birthday. The Wagyu Burger was good but I'd be fine eating at In-n-Out as well. The only thing that saved the curry was the soft steak ribeye. The beef in the curry tasted like meat from a stew. I'm not a huge fan of beef stew, so it made the curry taste mediocre. The Yuzu Oolong isn't a must get. Water is the way to go. Parking is free in the back lot. There's also plenty of street parking.

I've been meaning to review this place for a while now but keep forgetting to. Take that into consideration as things may have changed since I last went (a year ago). I had high expectations for this restaurant as Chubby group made itself a high standard brand for quality food. They don't use short grain sushi rice for their sushi hand rolls, which to me was odd. The salmon itself was fresh, so no complaints there. The eel was also good. Radish for curry being $3 is insane. I can understand $1 maybe, but $3 is robbery. Most curry places I've been to offer this free of charge as most people only take a spoonful of it to complement their curry. Waffle fries were fine, not super crispy, but not soggy. Curry flavor was there. Chicken cutlet curry - this was probably the worst curry I've ever had in my life. It tasted like spicy squash soup with little to no curry flavor..... I knew I had messed up ordering this when I saw the other tables and noticed everyone who ordered this almost all left it behind barely uneaten. To make matters worse, I asked a waitress at the time if this flavor was how it was intended or if somehow I could get more curry flavor in the curry. They offered me soy sauce to put in the curry..... SOY SAUCE?! I think it's insane that the fries had more of a curry taste than this actually 'curry' dish. I would've given this place 0 stars if this was all I had. Absolutely frustrated we spent so much money on this dish to be so grossly disappointed. At least the cutlet was fine. Thankfully the Wagyu curry was solid. This was a standard curry dish and actually tasted like curry. The meat was good, this dish I would have ordered again. Unfortunately because of the chicken curry, I don't think I would ever return again. It was misleading for anyone expecting curry and getting whatever that weird flavor combo was. All in all I'm giving them 2 stars because the Wagyu curry was decent and the fish from the rolls were fresh, but I overall wouldn't recommend from my experience.

When we first knew that we have a resto within the chubby group near our home, we were so excited! We stop by on a Thursday night at around 8:15-8:20, seated after few minutes. But we waited for soooo long for our foods. We noticed, there's only one attendant and the cook on that busy night. Saw few people outside waiting for their to-go orders. Many times the server will apologize and even mentioned that they ran out of rice. Great thing that the foods served were so delicious as always within the Chubby standards. The server was nice. We told her that we appreciate her trying to do her best that night. We just wish, she had someone to help her. For sure, we saw some customers visibly upset of the waiting. Nevertheless, we will come back.

Fun Japanese curry shop located in old town Covina. Wagyu and tonkatsu curries plus a wagyu burger and some sushi rolls. Watch your curry being made in the little display kitchen that reminds me of a small curry shop in Japan, part of the chubby cattle restaurant group. Plenty of parking in the backs. Also ice cold beer!

I've been to the Chubby Curry in Beverly Hills and I absolutely loved it. The stone pot hamburg curry on rice was amazing, the beef was super juicy, and the curry was amazing. I saw that Chubby Curry had opened a second branch in Covina, and I knew I eventually had to try it. I finally had to chance to visit with family one weekend. We came here for lunch right when the restaurant opened and thus we were seated fairly quickly. The staff are super nice and answered all our questions. The restaurant is small but cozy. We ended up sharing a wagyu beef burger, a vegetarian curry, and then their winter special which was an oden udon. I loved that the broth on the oden udon was very light and did not have too heavy an MSG taste. The daikon was amazing, and the noodle texture was perfect. I asked that the burger be cooked to a medium level. It came out basically a perfect medium, and the onions and curry were a wonderful accent. The beef was still very juicy and the brioche bun was soft. The veggie curry was amazing also. We loved the grilled broccoli and grilled mushrooms. This Chubby Curry is just as amazing as the one in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was a bit pricey but I would definitely come back.

Loved the decor. Very warm, inviting vibes. We ordered a few hand rolls and a Pork Katsu Curry. Everything is done through the tablet. Our order did take a awhile to arrive but it didn't disappoint. The fish was fresh and tasty. No weird fishy smells. Great texture and overall delicious. We got mild for our curry but it was still had a decent kick to it. Pork was well cooked and curry had a slight sweet note to it. Overall very enjoyable. Our servers were very attentive and checked on us for a regularly. They also have nice silverware lol read more

I went for the Chubby Curry, their namesake dish featuring slow-cooked wagyu beef in a dark cocoa curry with Worcestershire sauce and caramelized onions. Wow--what a flavor bomb! The curry was rich and savory, with a subtle cocoa sweetness that played beautifully against the umami-packed sauce. The wagyu was the star: tender, melt-in-your-mouth chunks that collapsed with the lightest nudge of my spoon. Served in a cute cast-iron pot alongside fluffy rice, fukujinzuke pickles, and charred broccoli, it felt like a cozy hug on a plate. I also couldn't resist the Wagyu Burger.topped with curry aioli and caramelized onions. The patty was juicy, perfectly seared, and bursting with that signature wagyu richness--definitely a contender for LA's best. Service was really good! Love the place it's cozy and it brings memories when I visited Osaka Japan restaurants. Love the table the seating arrangements and decors. read more

I've been waiting for them to open for quite some time. I got their chicken katsu curry. Breading was pretty crunchy on the katsu and the curry had good flavor as well. All in all it was good but I still prefer the old curry house which I do miss so much read more

We've been to the Hollywood location so decided to try out this location since it is much closer to us. We came on a Saturday at 2pm and there was a 40min wait. (The yelp waitlist is not open/available until 4pm.) Parking is easy to find in this area- plenty of free lots off the Main Street. Ambiance: Service: Energy of hostess and staff was really low. No one greeted us when we came in or were seated. Server did not introduce themselves to us and just left an iPad on the table with no explanation. (My boyfriend is an NFT holder as well and we were not explained the benefits until we were going to pay ...) Moreover, they aggressively put the utensils for my party next to one person and did not bring enough napkins. Service of the food itself was fairly quick once we put our order in. They did not once check in about how our food was or if we needed anything (including water refills). Food: Katsu crunch bliss salad - Presentation was nice. The portion size was larger than expected. Unfortunately, while the vinaigrette was good, the chicken Katsu was tough and dry. There was a mix of fresh cherry tomatoes and roasted tomatoes; I found the roasted tomatoes to be a weird paring in this dish. Chirashi bowl - All cuts of fish were fantastic and melt in your mouth quality. The uni was incredibly fresh. The yuzu/citrus flavor and small bit of caviar in the bowl was a nice touch. At $38, this was worth it. read more

Tried this spot as part of Dine LA. It was a new spot and have been to other restaurants owned by the same group and have had great experiences. Plus, this time they're serving curry which we were stoked about! Especially since Curry House is gone =[ We didn't just go with their special Dine LA menu. Even though they're the better deals, we wanted to try multiple things from their menu. For the curries, we tried their Chicken Katsu Curry and the Beef Wagyu Curry. The chicken katsu was pretty good - nothing too special but we did like it. The beef in the wagyu curry was also good - nice and tender. However, the curry flavor was just okay...kinda good but again, nothing special. It may have been our expectations when it comes to Japanese curry, but we did feel like we've had better. I also wish the meat portion in the curry was a little more. The wagyu curry had some potatoes and carrots in there, but for the price, I feel like there could have been more meat. So overall, the curry dishes were just okay for us. It could be very good with some people, but we've had Japanese curry dishes from different places so may have been a bit snobby with it. Good thing there were other items on the menu that we enjoyed - their hand rolls! They were a little more fancy and not traditional Japanese handrolls. The ones we ordered were the Hokkaido scallop uni handroll, Toro Uni Caviar handroll, and unagi handroll. These handrolls definitely made our visit better. And though we really liked the Hokkaido scallop uni handroll and the toro uni caviar handrolls, the fanciness of those dishes demanded a higher price tag! So overall, we though the handrolls were good! The included dessert in the Dine LA menu was the yuzu mochi. If you like yuzu, then you might really like this. I liked how it didn't tase so artificial and that it actually had a little sourness to it. It was like a tastier lemon mochi. It was good to try Chubby Curry since we're always trying to find a new go-to spot for curry. This may not be our go-to just yet, but I am willing to give it another shot in the future. We had to keep in mind that it was still a new restaurant so the menu might not have been fine-tuned yet. Hope this restaurant continues to improve and sticks around for a while. We need more Japanese curry spots. read more

Another great restaurant by the Chubby Group! this review is for their soft opening. FOOD: 4/5 We ordered a few items to try. --waffle fries: great portion, tasty sauce & has the right crispiness and texture. Would order again for sure 5/5 --wagyu burger: hubby loved it! Had a nice charred taste and the caramelized onions were on point. I would like to see some microgreens to add more texture. 5/5 (forgot to take pic) --truffle salmon carpaccio: sauce was amazing, portion felt a bit small but the thickness was good. I feel like the salmon is more like supermarket quality though. 4/5 --salmon hand roll & blue crab hand roll: server told us the soy sauce is already in the salmon roll but there wasn't and it literally had no sauce. Was actually quite dry. Rice needs vinegar, or something that enhances the rice aroma for taste. (But this is my personal preference) Would prefer the rice to be a bit warmer. Compared to ROL, Kazunori, Ootoro Bar, I feel like the hand rolls here need some work. The blue crab hand roll had a weird taste. 3/5 --Udon know me: I'm conflicted; hubby loved it but for me I felt like it was a bit bland. The sauce did not soak into it and was a bit more on the oily side. However hubby said it was a highlight and must try. The beef was good tho and I loved the red pickle on the top. 4/5 --Wagyu Curry: I'm not a curry connoisseur but I like how this didn't taste like it is from a cube. It had a beefy flavor, to me reminiscent of some Chinese curries. I like how it came with broccoli and some baby heirloom tomatoes. I wish there were more rice though! 4/5 PRICE/PORTION: 4/5 I feel like this is a bit more on the pricier side for the portion we had. We basically had to order 3 main entrees, 2 sides and 2 hand rolls to be full. (More on the fuller side though) but if I were to just order the udon, i think I would still need a side and a dessert to be full. SERVICE: 5/5 Great service from our server. He was friendly and we didn't have to wait a long time for the food. AMBIANCE/COMFORT: 5/5 I liked the decor here! Felt very comfortable and kind of reminded me of a more modern and spacious version of cafes in Japan. Overall, I had a pleasant dinner here and will return! I just hope their hand rolls can be improved a bit, but again this is Chubby Curry not chubby hand rolls lol. Parking was easy as well, granted we went here on a Tuesday. read more

Starting with ambiance 5/5 Can't really complain as the there are several booth seating downstairs and looks like there are upstairs seating as well. Bottom section has bar seating with an open view of kitchen at work. Watch your wagyu burgers being made! Food was decent as well. 5/5 We had the wagyu beef rice bowl + wagyu curry + waffle fries. I surprisingly enjoyed the wagyu rice bowl way more than the curry simply how nice the wagyu beef was cooked and presented. Absolute chefs kiss Service was on point tonight 5/5 Our waiter was very attentive and made sure we taken care of. Sadly I forgot his name but just remember whoever took care of us on election night. Went here for New Years for a fun family dinner... only to be pretty disappointed. We ordered all the main dishes + some appetizers. Cold tofu (4/5) Standard, nothing to write home about. Cucumber and radish salad (3/5) Standard, but $3 for cucumbers and radish sliced paper thin is a little sad. Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl (2/5) Definitely not wagyu steak. I've had different types of wagyu before and this is not it. There's no fattiness to it and was pretty tough to chew. Presentation was nice though...I guess? Wagyu Burger (4/5) Good! Messy to eat and kinda plain looking, but I wouldn't pay this much for a burger again. At least add some fries or a side salad. Tonkatsu curry (3.5/5) Tonkatsu itself was crispy, spice a good medium, and the curry was standard. Again, nothing to write home about and DEFINITELY would rather just eat somewhere else (Rowland Heights has many better options). Udon Know Me (1/5) Smallest portion I've ever seen for $18. Actually laughable. Meat felt comparable to cheap brisket than the advertised wagyu. Chirashi Chubby Bowl (3/5) BIGGEST ISSUE CAME HERE. I'm genuinely disappointed with my recent experience here. I used to come to this location years ago when it was a different restaurant--back when the space had life, energy, and even karaoke nights. When I mentioned this to the hostess at the front (just reminiscing, not even asking a question), she cut me off abruptly and said, "We don't do karaoke," in a tone that was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. Not a great first impression. Later, I asked if we could check out the upstairs seating area. She said I could "look," and that was it. Thankfully, the guy working upstairs was friendly and actually let me sit down--he was the only bright spot in the entire visit. But moments later, the same hostess had another staff member come track me down to get me to sit back downstairs, like I was a kindergartner being scolded. Completely uncalled for and frankly embarrassing. I was here with a friend who had actually wanted to show me this spot--he told me ahead of time that the food was decent but the service was always bad. Sadly, this visit just confirmed that he was right. He was embarrassed for even recommending it, and what we experienced only reminded him that this wasn't a one-off -- the bad service is consistent. We ordered the Wagyu burger with a side of eggs. The burger came out first--and to be fair, it was good--but then the egg didn't arrive until about five minutes later, and it was ice cold. I'm not exaggerating--it tasted like it had just come out of the fridge. I like to eat my burger hot and with the egg on top, not half now and half later. The entire place lacks energy, atmosphere, and basic hospitality. The staff move around like they can't wait for their shift to be over--dry, disconnected, and seemingly annoyed to be there. You also do all the ordering yourself on a tablet, yet they still expect a full-service tip. What exactly are we tipping for? It's baffling how much money clearly went into updating this space just to be filled with a team that doesn't care and service that leaves customers feeling like an inconvenience. If something doesn't change soon, this place won't survive. Great food can't save a restaurant from bad service--and this spot is proof of that. read more

I recently visited The Chubby Curry, which opened in the former location of Bishamon--a Japanese restaurant I absolutely loved and deeply miss. I came here with a group for a colleague's birthday, and while there were some positives, my overall experience was underwhelming. First, the good: the staff was incredibly accommodating and gave us a private room upstairs for our celebration, which was a nice touch. The ambiance was pleasant, and everything looked clean and well-maintained. Our server was very kind and attentive, going out of their way to try and improve our experience. Now, the not-so-good: the food just wasn't for me. I ordered the Katsu Curry, which was around $25, and added sides like broccoli, mushrooms, fries, dumplings, and more. While the presentation was nice, nothing really stood out flavor-wise. For the price, I was expecting a lot more in terms of quality and taste. I also requested the hottest spice level for my curry, but it was disappointingly mild. To their credit, the server brought me a sauce from the back that added some much-needed heat, but even with that, the dish didn't live up to my expectations. While I think curry lovers might still enjoy this place, I found it overpriced and the food mediocre overall. Sadly, I don't think I'll be visiting again, but I'd still encourage others to give it a try and decide for themselves. read more

I went here to celebrate my birthday and they said it would take 15 minutes. We ended up waiting 30 minutes. There was a table already set to be clean but they didn't clean until we came in. I had to give stare to one of the waiter that was waiting us. When getting the dishes, everything was out of order and my step dad didn't have his meal out way after the fact of both me and my mom were done eating. He only had a salad that we ordered. I didn't have my beverage way later and was already almost done with my meal. The guy waiter kept looking at our table and never checked on us after we said something. Although there were tables with customers, it was not packed. I also saw a couple that were waiting. I don't want to assume the worst but I also believe that because of the color of skin, my family wasn't waited because of this. I hope this was only an assumption and I am incorrect. We were offered cake and received 10% off. I still am unpleased with this service and hope they can take action on diversity and inclusion and provide the best quality service to all people. Going to this restaurant and freshly moved to this area left a bad impression of this place and want to push people to come in here for great food but if there a broken agenda then I cannot recommend. read more

A Fantastic New Curry Spot by Chubby Group in Covina! Chubby Group has done it again, adding another standout spot to their lineup of restaurants. We had the pleasure of attending the soft opening tonight, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. Though the restaurant is cozy, there's actually additional seating on the second floor, which is a nice surprise. They also offer a sushi bar area where you can watch the chef in action, adding a unique experience for sushi fans. We tried several popular dishes, and each one impressed us. The Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl was a personal favorite, packed with rich flavors and perfectly cooked meat. A close second was their curry udon - incredibly comforting and flavorful. And the Chicken Katsu Kare was a pleasant surprise - the thick chicken breast was impressively juicy and tender, something that's often hard to achieve with katsu. We're excited to return and explore more of the menu soon.
