The fish was fresh and tasty. No weird fishy smells. Great texture and overall delicious. We got mild for our curry but it was still had a decent kick to it. We've been to the Hollywood location so decided to try out this location since it is much closer to us. We came on a Saturday at 2pm and there was a 40min wait. (The yelp waitlist is not open/available until 4pm.) Parking is easy to find in this area- plenty of free lots off the Main Street. Ambiance: Service: Energy of hostess and staff was really low. No one greeted us when we came in or were seated. Server did not introduce themselves to us and just left an iPad on the table with no explanation. (My boyfriend is an NFT holder as well and we were not explained the benefits until we were going to pay ...) Moreover, they aggressively put the utensils for my party next to one person and did not bring enough napkins. Service of the food itself was fairly quick once we put our order in. They did not once check in about how our food was or if we needed anything (including water refills). Food: Katsu crunch bliss salad - Presentation was nice. The portion size was larger than expected. Unfortunately, while the vinaigrette was good, the chicken Katsu was tough and dry. There was a mix of fresh cherry tomatoes and roasted tomatoes; I found the roasted tomatoes to be a weird paring in this dish. Chirashi bowl - All cuts of fish were fantastic and melt in your mouth quality. The uni was incredibly fresh. The yuzu/citrus flavor and small bit of caviar in the bowl was a nice touch. Cucumber and radish salad (3/5) Standard, but $3 for cucumbers and radish sliced paper thin is a little sad. Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl (2/5) Definitely not wagyu steak. I've had different types of wagyu before and this is not it. There's no fattiness to it and was pretty tough to chew. Presentation was nice though...I guess? Wagyu Burger (4/5) Good! Messy to eat and kinda plain looking, but I wouldn't pay this much for a burger again. At least add some fries or a side salad. Tonkatsu curry (3.5/5) Tonkatsu itself was crispy, spice a good medium, and the curry was standard. Again, nothing to write home about and DEFINITELY would rather just eat somewhere else (Rowland Heights has many better options). Udon Know Me (1/5) Smallest portion I've ever seen for $18. Actually laughable. Meat felt comparable to cheap brisket than the advertised wagyu. Chirashi Chubby Bowl (3/5) BIGGEST ISSUE CAME HERE. It was advertised to have uni but when we got it, it wasn't there. When asked, the waitress said that they ran out so they subbed for crab instead. A little weird that they didn't give us a heads up about that. It feels like this place tries to cut corners wherever possible, which leaves me to question how the quality will be over time since it just opened. Tried this spot as part of Dine LA. It was a new spot and have been to other restaurants owned by the same group and have had great experiences. Plus, this time they're serving curry which we were stoked about! Especially since Curry House is gone =[ We didn't just go with their special Dine LA menu. Even though they're the better deals, we wanted to try multiple things from their menu. For the curries, we tried their Chicken Katsu Curry and the Beef Wagyu Curry. The chicken katsu was pretty good - nothing too special but we did like it. The beef in the wagyu curry was also good - nice and tender. However, the curry flavor was just okay...kinda good but again, nothing special. It may have been our expectations when it comes to Japanese curry, but we did feel like we've had better. I also wish the meat portion in the curry was a little more. The wagyu curry had some potatoes and carrots in there, but for the price, I feel like there could have been more meat. So overall, the curry dishes were just okay for us. It could be very good with some people, but we've had Japanese curry dishes from different places so may have been a bit snobby with it. Good thing there were other items on the menu that we enjoyed - their hand rolls! They were a little more fancy and not traditional Japanese handrolls. The ones we ordered were the Hokkaido scallop uni handroll, Toro Uni Caviar handroll, and unagi handroll. These handrolls definitely made our visit better. And though we really liked the Hokkaido scallop uni handroll and the toro uni caviar handrolls, the fanciness of those dishes demanded a higher price tag! So overall, we though the handrolls were good! The included dessert in the Dine LA menu was the yuzu mochi. If you like yuzu, then you might really like this. I liked how it didn't tase so artificial and that it actually had a little sourness to it. It was like a tastier lemon mochi. It was good to try Chubby Curry since we're always trying to find a new go-to spot for curry. This may not be our go-to just yet, but I am willing to give it another shot in the future. We had to keep in mind that it was still a new restaurant so the menu might not have been fine-tuned yet. Hope this restaurant continues to improve and sticks around for a while. FOOD: 4/5 We ordered a few items to try. --waffle fries: great portion, tasty sauce & has the right crispiness and texture. Would order again for sure 5/5 --wagyu burger: hubby loved it! I would like to see some microgreens to add more texture. 5/5 (forgot to take pic) --truffle salmon carpaccio: sauce was amazing, portion felt a bit small but the thickness was good. I feel like the salmon is more like supermarket quality though. 4/5 --salmon hand roll & blue crab hand roll: server told us the soy sauce is already in the salmon roll but there wasn't and it literally had no sauce. Was actually quite dry. Rice needs vinegar, or something that enhances the rice aroma for taste. (But this is my personal preference) Would prefer the rice to be a bit warmer. Compared to ROL, Kazunori, Ootoro Bar, I feel like the hand rolls here need some work. The blue crab hand roll had a weird taste. 3/5 --Udon know me: I'm conflicted; hubby loved it but for me I felt like it was a bit bland. The sauce did not soak into it and was a bit more on the oily side. However hubby said it was a highlight and must try. The beef was good tho and I loved the red pickle on the top. 4/5 --Wagyu Curry: I'm not a curry connoisseur but I like how this didn't taste like it is from a cube. It had a beefy flavor, to me reminiscent of some Chinese curries. I like how it came with broccoli and some baby heirloom tomatoes. I wish there were more rice though! 4/5 PRICE/PORTION: 4/5 I feel like this is a bit more on the pricier side for the portion we had. We basically had to order 3 main entrees, 2 sides and 2 hand rolls to be full. (More on the fuller side though) but if I were to just order the udon, i think I would still need a side and a dessert to be full. SERVICE: 5/5 Great service from our server. He was friendly and we didn't have to wait a long time for the food. AMBIANCE/COMFORT: 5/5 I liked the decor here! Felt very comfortable and kind of reminded me of a more modern and spacious version of cafes in Japan. Overall, I had a pleasant dinner here and will return!
