Food was very flavorful and cooked well. Review will be in the photos. Service was great. They even changed the order for my daughter's kids meal to have noodles substituted without any charge. My only complaint would be that I wished they advised us that with the party of 6 or more, that a tip was included already. But that's also our fault that we didn't ask before putting the additional tip. We know for next time. Love the the wooden decor. Made us feel that we were back in Japan.

In the search of a new Friday date-night spot, my husband and I came across chubby curry on Yelp recommendations. We both have never tried Japanese style curry and the pictures looked absolutely delicious. Located in the busy downtown Covina area nightlife is loud and busy, in a good way! If you're looking to park near the restaurant, come with plenty of time as street parking, especially during the night is hard to come across. Although, they do have a parking structure that's just about a block away, which is not much of a walk! It's a very small restaurant with not much seating, but we didn't have to wait much on a Friday night-15 minutes max but they do have a Yelp sign up. If you know you're coming I recommend you do this. We were seated, and I should mention that the hospitality was amazing! My husband and I were well taken care of and all of our questions answered. Whenever we try a new spot that looks as good as this we try to get a little bit of everything. As you see from the pictures, we had lots to try from and I can safely say that I will be back to try a lot more! The food was super juicy, meats were tender, the sushi was delicious...... I left absolutely stuffed! My husband says this is easily one of his new favorite spots :)

After visiting XPOT in Las Vegas, e decided to become a member of the CHUBBY CATTLE GROUP. We were on our way to LA so we searched on YELP for the nearest Chubby Cattle Group restaurant and made sure it had high ratings... CHICKEN KATSU CURRY: 10/10 My expectations were low so I was BLOWN AWAY at how good their CHICKEN KATSU was!! The chicken was so JUICY & TENDER. I usually don't event like eating chicken katsu and I end up eating the curry and rice but, the CHICKEN KATSU WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW... WAGYU GYOZA: 8/10 It was good especially the filling. The texture of the steamed gyoza was really thick. I think I might have like a fried version more... My husband said they have the KATSU breading and the hamburger meat so they can definitely do a katsu burger and curry dish! AKA MENCHI... SERVICE: A+ Our server was such a delight to take to!! He spoke to us as if we've been friends for years!! Made us feel so at home and recommended his favorite dishes to us. We wish him ask the best with his CAREER!!! AMBIANCE: I really felt like I was transported to a cute Japanese cafe and bar. There were wooden booths and a nice demo display of the dishes at the window in the front... We definitely be back in a HURRY for more CHUBBY CURRY!!!!

Doesn't surprise me this is part of the chubby cattle empire because it's DELICIOUS! Had 2 very fresh yellowtail handrolls - they have other ones too - and the wagyu beef bowl. It comes with rice and egg and is a surprisingly big portion. I looooved it, esp the garlic butter which was a nice touch. My friend got the wagyu curry and let me have a bite and it was incredible! A gentle and comforting flavor and generous chunks of beef. Plus rice. Overall, incredible experience & cant wait to return! We didnt wait at all and it had a good amount of parking.

I wanted to like it more. I think the curry is just missing that zing, but overall it is above average. The wagyu is definitely really tender in the curry. It almost melted in your mouth, and was the best part of the meal. I would like if they added more vegetables to the curry. Also got the udon, and it was pretty overall good. They have some deals on weekdays. We might come in during a deal. Just wish the curry had more a zing taste, and it would make this place outstanding. Without that strong taste of curry, this place falls a little short. Service was okay. Good for a date. Has some places to walk around afterwards.

Heard about the chubby chain so thought we'd give this place a try. It was however not satisfactory. If you were expecting Japanese style curry with a deep and rich flavoring, this place is not for you. That's what I was expecting and so was disappointed in my curry. For a party of 4 we order a few dishes to share. We ordered: Tonkatsu Kare: katsu was delicious, good crisp and flavor. Curry lacked flavor and was very light. Curry was thin. Wagyu steak bowl - 10/10 best thing we ordered. Wagyu had very good flavor Wagyu burger - was juicy but lacked a savory flavor Macha bingso - enjoyable and a good size for 4 people. I was happy the matcha flavor had the typical matcha bitterness to it, and did not taste like the sugary fake syrup you get at some restaurants Parking is easy to find and the restaurant seems like it can accommodate quite a few people on the floor above as well. The space is cozy, comfortable and cutely decorated. Probably won't be coming back however, as this style of curry doesn't meet my needs in a curry.

Chubby Curry is a solid 3/5. If you're coming to a Chubby franchise, you'll have to get some kind of meat to go with your curry. All orders are placed on the tablet. My group ordered the Curry Wagyu Steak Ribeye Rice Plate and the Wagyu Burger to share. This place is definitely boogie. Charging $3 to add cheese to a burger is wild. Service was really good. They gave my friend an ice cream mochi for her birthday. The Wagyu Burger was good but I'd be fine eating at In-n-Out as well. The only thing that saved the curry was the soft steak ribeye. The beef in the curry tasted like meat from a stew. I'm not a huge fan of beef stew, so it made the curry taste mediocre. The Yuzu Oolong isn't a must get. Water is the way to go. Parking is free in the back lot. There's also plenty of street parking.

I've been meaning to review this place for a while now but keep forgetting to. Take that into consideration as things may have changed since I last went (a year ago). I had high expectations for this restaurant as Chubby group made itself a high standard brand for quality food. They don't use short grain sushi rice for their sushi hand rolls, which to me was odd. The salmon itself was fresh, so no complaints there. The eel was also good. Radish for curry being $3 is insane. I can understand $1 maybe, but $3 is robbery. Most curry places I've been to offer this free of charge as most people only take a spoonful of it to complement their curry. Waffle fries were fine, not super crispy, but not soggy. Curry flavor was there. Chicken cutlet curry - this was probably the worst curry I've ever had in my life. It tasted like spicy squash soup with little to no curry flavor..... I knew I had messed up ordering this when I saw the other tables and noticed everyone who ordered this almost all left it behind barely uneaten. To make matters worse, I asked a waitress at the time if this flavor was how it was intended or if somehow I could get more curry flavor in the curry. They offered me soy sauce to put in the curry..... SOY SAUCE?! I think it's insane that the fries had more of a curry taste than this actually 'curry' dish. I would've given this place 0 stars if this was all I had. Absolutely frustrated we spent so much money on this dish to be so grossly disappointed. At least the cutlet was fine. Thankfully the Wagyu curry was solid. This was a standard curry dish and actually tasted like curry. The meat was good, this dish I would have ordered again. Unfortunately because of the chicken curry, I don't think I would ever return again. It was misleading for anyone expecting curry and getting whatever that weird flavor combo was. All in all I'm giving them 2 stars because the Wagyu curry was decent and the fish from the rolls were fresh, but I overall wouldn't recommend from my experience.

When we first knew that we have a resto within the chubby group near our home, we were so excited! We stop by on a Thursday night at around 8:15-8:20, seated after few minutes. But we waited for soooo long for our foods. We noticed, there's only one attendant and the cook on that busy night. Saw few people outside waiting for their to-go orders. Many times the server will apologize and even mentioned that they ran out of rice. Great thing that the foods served were so delicious as always within the Chubby standards. The server was nice. We told her that we appreciate her trying to do her best that night. We just wish, she had someone to help her. For sure, we saw some customers visibly upset of the waiting. Nevertheless, we will come back.

Fun Japanese curry shop located in old town Covina. Wagyu and tonkatsu curries plus a wagyu burger and some sushi rolls. Watch your curry being made in the little display kitchen that reminds me of a small curry shop in Japan, part of the chubby cattle restaurant group. Plenty of parking in the backs. Also ice cold beer!

I've been to the Chubby Curry in Beverly Hills and I absolutely loved it. The stone pot hamburg curry on rice was amazing, the beef was super juicy, and the curry was amazing. I saw that Chubby Curry had opened a second branch in Covina, and I knew I eventually had to try it. I finally had to chance to visit with family one weekend. We came here for lunch right when the restaurant opened and thus we were seated fairly quickly. The staff are super nice and answered all our questions. The restaurant is small but cozy. We ended up sharing a wagyu beef burger, a vegetarian curry, and then their winter special which was an oden udon. I loved that the broth on the oden udon was very light and did not have too heavy an MSG taste. The daikon was amazing, and the noodle texture was perfect. I asked that the burger be cooked to a medium level. It came out basically a perfect medium, and the onions and curry were a wonderful accent. The beef was still very juicy and the brioche bun was soft. The veggie curry was amazing also. We loved the grilled broccoli and grilled mushrooms. This Chubby Curry is just as amazing as the one in Beverly Hills. The restaurant was a bit pricey but I would definitely come back.

I really wanted to enjoy this as I do enjoy going to many of the chubby cattle restaurants. However this one did not please me as well as the other restaurants. Ordered the pork katsu and the burger The pork katsu was so dry even after I added the curry sauce it still didn't help that much and the curry to me lacked any curry flavor. The burger was okay, it is medium rare, so if you don't like the pink in the middle then you may not enjoy this. I didn't mind that but flavor was just okay nothing to right about. read more

Delicious food, generous portions, and excellent service in a welcoming ambiance. We tried the burger, gyudon, and chicken katsu curry--everything was full of flavor and perfectly prepared. While some add-ons, like $3 for cheese, felt a bit pricey, the quality and taste more than made up for it. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Good Savory Curry. I think they stew the meat with the curry so the curry itself is very flavorful and has a meaty fullness to it. I do like the amount of curry given as I usually have left over curry compared to rice. Even if a take a bit of leftover curry home, it's flavorful enough to eat with another bowl of rice. Wagyu curry: I have been here 3 times to try different items, sometimes the meat cubes comes out dry and hard to chew on even as it is wagyu meat which I find not very worth turning wagyu into curry meat chunks. The roastes broccoli is a nice touch. Steak curry: The slices of roasted steak with the curry tastes better as the texture is nice but it is pricey. You lose the broccoli too. Chirashi: My actual favorite of this place is their chirashi bowl. They have really good cuts of fish and thick too. The bit of uni, fish eggs, and sweet shrimp is also a great added selection for what I think is a price worth the bowl. Handrolls: not my cup of sushi. Biting through the seaweed was a bit difficult. And the handrails are expensive!!! Like super expensive. I would rather just get the chirashi bowl. Likes: Flavor Dislikes: -they only give free miso soup for their soft opening. Also their miso soup is not that good either so I wouldn't recommend to buy it. -broccoli doesn't come with the roast beef curry even though you pay a wammy. read more

Amazing Japanese curry! I use to go to Hurry Curry and Curry House all the time, but now you have to look for Japanese curry. I had the chicken katsu medium, which actually had heat (most places medium was barely spiced). I also had yuzu beer, which was a great drink. Parking is on the street, wherever you find it. You can join the waitlist or walk in. I don't like that the menu and ordering is done on a tablet. I prefer ordering with a person or on paper, but that's a fairly minor personal preference. Other than that, excellent experience. read more

The food was ok this time. I feel like the curry was a little thinner this time. I came 10 months ago and it was delicious. The menu has changed a bit, but perhaps that's seasonal. Little stuff gave me the ick this time. Lip stains on the water cup when I had nothing on my lips. The plates were chipped. As soon as a plate at a restaurant chips, the restaurant needs to dispose of it. It looked so bad I didn't even want to take a picture. Next, the food came out whenever and in whatever order. On the menu there were appetizers listed that I ordered, but my udon came out first. Many of the fries were stuck together and the last time I had them they were fantastic. We had a couple of orders of tonkatsu and each one was cooked differently even though they were the same thing. Golden brown and dry and barely any color and no crunch. Again the little details were off on my most recent dining experience. Everything had a sticky, grimy feel. The napkin holder, chopstick holder, the tablet in which you order. I know the Chubby Group has higher standards for their restaurants. I really don't want to be disappointed because my first dining experience was great, but I am a little disappointed. I didn't complain while dining because I was a bit tired from the week and just wanted to enjoy time with family. Our waiter was fine. Not as personable as our last waiter. And it was hot in the restaurant this time too. Please clean up a little better and replace your broken plates. I would hate for our Covina location to not do well going forward. read more

I went here for DineLA with my friends. I ordered the Wagyu Beef Curry option with 1 Handroll of choice (Yellowtail), Seaweed Salad with Miso Soup, Tsuru-ume Yuzu alcoholic drink, and Yuzu Mochi Ice Cream. The Wagyu Beef Curry felt like comfort food and tasted really good, just missing the pickled items that usually comes with Japanese Curry. The Yellowtail Handroll was really fresh and the fish was great quality. The seaweed salad wasn't too special. Miso soup was great, you can't go wrong with that. The Yuzu Mochi Ice Cream wasn't my favorite, but I got it to try it. I really enjoyed the Tsuru-ume Yuzu as it was light on the alcohol. The service was really well up until they had to serve us the dessert. It took really long for them to bring it to us and as if the servers forgot that it was part of the DineLA menu. The ambiance was really mellow and wasn't as crowded which I enjoyed. It was a nice place to enjoy a great meal. read more

The curry was good. I'm Japanese-American and the curry here is always good. Not too sweet. Be careful the medium spicy is freakin spicy. The chicken katsu is not all burnt and it looks like it has been legitimately fried in Ponku correctly. I recommend anyone who actually enjoys Japanese curry like myself. Wish there was a Chubby Curry in Pasadena. It would be an ideal location. read more

Let me start by saying yum yum yum. We tried the phenomenal Wagyu curry. The spice was just right, and it made the dish more enjoyable. I like how it wasn't overpowering to my palate. The Wagyu burger was also delicious. The broccoli was spectacular; every bite was complete satisfaction. The sunset roll was also super good. The salmon was top-notch and super fresh. This was a good meal; the service was excellent and fast. The server was attentive and friendly. Very tidy spot, too, which is a plus. read more

Already had high expectations eating at the Beverly Hills Location for more than 3+ times and always enjoyed my time as the food quality was splendid. I would always give them a 5 star experience. So I brought my family here in the Covina location to try, but was met with disappointment. We ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry, Tonkatsu Curry, Wagyu Burger, and the Wagyu Fried rice. The flavor was fairly the same, but the tonkatsu was incredibly dry and dehydrated. Same as the chicken katsu. We ultimately agreed that it would've been better to go to Tokyo Central and buy the chicken katsu bento there rather than spending $24. Talk about OVERPRICED CURRY! The Wagyu itself was good as well, but again, not the same amount of flavor and juice I would've gotten from the Beverly Hills location. Overall, the experience was ok, and I don't think we would come back to this location again unless if the quality meets the price offered. Thank you for the food! But the quality could definitely be better! read more

An amazing spot for curry just watch out on the spice level. Their service was great. My girlfriend got the level two spicy, and it was too spicy for her and the waiter gladly switched it for a less spicy version. The grapefruit drink was very refreshing. read more

Went 11/9/24 during soft opening, around 5-6 PM. I'm no stranger to the Chubby Group restaurants, but there is a certain expectation as to the food quality and ambiance. Restaurant decor is lovely and clearly a lot of thought was put into it. There were some anime figures on the second floor and japanese pop music was playing. The classic salmon handball was delicious, but nothing too out of the ordinary. My table's order wasn't too big. 2 Wagyu Curry and the Tonkatsu Kare. Therefore I can only comment on the curry served. The curry was decent at best, but it was not comparable to Japanese style curry. The tomato based flavor other reviewers have commented on was on point, and it did remind me of chinese/canto style type curry. The beef in the wagyu curry was very tough. The offerings were inconsistent in the two bowls we got. One had more meat, the other bowl had no potatoes. I had some of the tonkatsu only but it was breaded nicely and crunchy. It tasted a little bland so I would suggest it to be seasoned a little more. Service was a bit slow on the second floor. Staff were attentive, but they're stretched too thinly. I ordered a cocktail but never got it by the end of our visit despite two reminders. I understand it's the soft opening, and I hope it will do well in its new home in Covina. Not sure if I will visit again as there are tons of other restaurants that serve more authentic Japanese style curry. read more

Having been to other restaurants such as Chubby Cattle multiple times under the Chubby group name, there is a higher level of expectation for food and service due to their reputation. Also, having restaurant experience and working directly in customer service type of work, we see things differently. We came to dine in on a Friday night and the wait wasn't too bad. I don't complain much and I'm a very understanding person but our first time experience here was very disappointing and I feel like I have to mention something. We ordered several items like katsu curry, butter udon, and the "Chef's special" for sushi. We were told that there would be a mix of handrolls and sushi, hence the reason we ordered the Chef's special. Around 10-15 minutes after putting in our order, we were told that the chef was too busy and he couldn't make it. The chef told that to the server and we told the server we can wait since we are pretty patient people. Then, the chef himself came out to tell us there were so many other tickets before ours and he couldn't make it and it would take a long time. WTF. You're making sushi already so that wasn't a good enough reason to why you can't make it. We were already planning to order lots of handrolls so it didn't make sense to go with individual orders. He was already making that already. We told him directly we can wait and we are patient so then he said ok. When our order came out, it was basically all sashimi and no handrolls. You're cutting sashimi... the least amount of work in making it sushi. That was a major turn off. It basically gave us the impression that he didn't want to make it. If your customers are willing to wait and be patient, you don't tell them you can't because you're by yourself. If you can't make it, block that off the menu. If your server was incorrect about the food items, then there needs to be proper training as well. The menu itself is very simplistic and you have a tablet for customers to put in their own order. So, in conclusion, don't be fooled by those foodie influencers making videos promoting the restaurants. There are only a few that I would say are pretty legit with their reviews. Anyway, the chicken katsu and pork katsu are delicious. The butter udon is small. I don't know about handrolls since we never got it... hopefully your experience is better. read more

Finally got to try Chubby Curry for the first time with my friend and had the pork katsu--it was absolutely delicious! Super flavorful, crispy on the outside, and tender inside. Easily one of the better katsu dishes I've had in a while. Shoutout to my server, Memo, who made the experience even better. Came here for a meal and overall had a decent experience. The food was good--not the best curry I've had, but still enjoyable. Service was a bit slow, likely because there was only one worker on the top floor handling all the orders. They also forgot to bring me my drink, but once I reminded them, they brought it over. The wait was pretty long, but well worth it. The food could be ordered on iPads. Super easy to order and the food came out rather quickly. My husband ordered wagyu curry while I got a wagyu bowl. We also got broccoli mushrooms. The curry was super rich and flavorful. The steak bowl had wagyu that was super soft and just melted in your mouth. The decor was so cute. Confused. The ambiance... was seated upstairs and it was cold. Cold enough to have to walk back downstairs and get my jacket from the car. The restrooms are very very clean. The food. The miso soup was mediocre. They had put my soup down on the table and left it unattended while I went to my car to get my jacket. My soup was cold. I ordered the katsu curry.... the curry had no flavor. Bland. Gross. The chicken separated from its batter. It just wasnt anything good. The curry tasted of vinegar. When my waiter finally returned, he asked if he could box my food. I said 3x I didnt like my food. At all. He didnt know what to do and not wanting to be -- that person, I paid and left a decent tip. I half expected him to refund me. I hadnt eaten anything on the plate. It was horrible. Why isnt this curry place a curry spot? If this is traditional by any means, then .... maybe its me. Ive had exchange students make me curry.... this place is NOT it. I wont be back. There was no managerial staff to ask about my experience or why I didnt like the food. I will start by saying that I am very particular about Italian food. First, the location is perfect, slightly tucked away with ample parking, a cute and inviting atmosphere, and staff who are genuinely kind and welcoming. When giving recommendations, they speak from a place of knowledge and passion for the food, which is always appreciated. We started with the focaccia and house-made butter. Oh my goodness an absolute must. The focaccia was airy and delicious, and the butter was out of this world. I could honestly eat that by itself. I also loved the pickled sweet peppers that accompanied it. The broccolini was cooked to perfection, served in a generous portion, and was somehow a vegetable that even my six-year-old happily ate. Speaking of my six-year-old, he ordered the kids' red spaghetti, which was honestly one of the best children's spaghetti dishes I have ever tasted. It was flavorful, clearly made with quality ingredients, and far exceeded expectations for a kids' meal. My husband and I shared the torchietti with pork ragù. The pasta was perfectly cooked, with a delicious, well-balanced flavor and generous pieces of pork throughout. The house-made ricotta added a rich creaminess that complemented the dish beautifully. We also had the rigatoni pesto with pistachios and burrata. The crunch from the pistachios paired wonderfully with the creaminess of the burrata, while the basil pesto tied everything together. Another delicious dish. My husband ordered a peach cocktail, which he described as perfectly balanced. To finish the evening, we shared a scoop of their house-made vanilla ice cream and a large slice of chocolate cake. The ice cream was velvety, not overly sweet, and paired perfectly with the cake. The dark chocolate provided great balance without being too rich, and although the cake appeared dense at first glance, it still had a surprising lightness to it. Overall, I cannot recommend this place enough. It is a true neighborhood gem, and I am excited to have it so close to home.

I recently visited The Chubby Curry, which opened in the former location of Bishamon--a Japanese restaurant I absolutely loved and deeply miss. I came here with a group for a colleague's birthday, and while there were some positives, my overall experience was underwhelming. First, the good: the staff was incredibly accommodating and gave us a private room upstairs for our celebration, which was a nice touch. The ambiance was pleasant, and everything looked clean and well-maintained. Our server was very kind and attentive, going out of their way to try and improve our experience. Now, the not-so-good: the food just wasn't for me. I ordered the Katsu Curry, which was around $25, and added sides like broccoli, mushrooms, fries, dumplings, and more. While the presentation was nice, nothing really stood out flavor-wise. For the price, I was expecting a lot more in terms of quality and taste. I also requested the hottest spice level for my curry, but it was disappointingly mild. To their credit, the server brought me a sauce from the back that added some much-needed heat, but even with that, the dish didn't live up to my expectations. While I think curry lovers might still enjoy this place, I found it overpriced and the food mediocre overall. Sadly, I don't think I'll be visiting again, but I'd still encourage others to give it a try and decide for themselves. read more

I went here to celebrate my birthday and they said it would take 15 minutes. We ended up waiting 30 minutes. There was a table already set to be clean but they didn't clean until we came in. I had to give stare to one of the waiter that was waiting us. When getting the dishes, everything was out of order and my step dad didn't have his meal out way after the fact of both me and my mom were done eating. He only had a salad that we ordered. I didn't have my beverage way later and was already almost done with my meal. The guy waiter kept looking at our table and never checked on us after we said something. Although there were tables with customers, it was not packed. I also saw a couple that were waiting. I don't want to assume the worst but I also believe that because of the color of skin, my family wasn't waited because of this. I hope this was only an assumption and I am incorrect. We were offered cake and received 10% off. I still am unpleased with this service and hope they can take action on diversity and inclusion and provide the best quality service to all people. Going to this restaurant and freshly moved to this area left a bad impression of this place and want to push people to come in here for great food but if there a broken agenda then I cannot recommend. read more

A Fantastic New Curry Spot by Chubby Group in Covina! Chubby Group has done it again, adding another standout spot to their lineup of restaurants. We had the pleasure of attending the soft opening tonight, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. Though the restaurant is cozy, there's actually additional seating on the second floor, which is a nice surprise. They also offer a sushi bar area where you can watch the chef in action, adding a unique experience for sushi fans. We tried several popular dishes, and each one impressed us. The Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl was a personal favorite, packed with rich flavors and perfectly cooked meat. A close second was their curry udon - incredibly comforting and flavorful. And the Chicken Katsu Kare was a pleasant surprise - the thick chicken breast was impressively juicy and tender, something that's often hard to achieve with katsu. We're excited to return and explore more of the menu soon. After seating us they showed us how to order from a tablet. The food is described along with a picture. You pick your items and send it to the kitchen and the food comes out a lot faster than most restaurants. I had Chubby Curry wagyu beef plate with tri-tip. The slow-cooked mild curry beef just melted in your mouth so tender and came with rice and a soft egg. My wife and I shared a house salad, slaw with tomatoes, radish and cucumber. My wife had the Wagyu steak rice plate. Same slow cooked beef so tender with her choosing spicier curry. This meal was such a delight, all 5's start to finish. read more
