I had high hopes for this place but my experience left me feeling pretty underwhelmed and disappointed. Several mishaps occurred that definitely need to be fixed before grand opening. This restaurant is incredibly limited in seating. It's pretty much Kazunori style with bar seating around the open kitchen where you are side by side with the people dining next to you. There's maybe 20-24 spots? They also had some outdoor seating but I honestly don't know how the front of house was managing the wait list. The expected wait times are way off. We were told to be seated around 7 but we actually got seated closer to 9; we waited almost 2 hours. The person managing the front of house was running around like a headless chicken, but not effectively managing the list. We were next on the waitlist and told to check in with the host. They ended up giving our seat away to a party behind us. We were willing to break our group into doubles but not sure if our point got across. We ended up waiting almost 45 minutes after - it was just super chaotic and disorganized. The other issue is that they need to be more specific about being a member of Chubby to get the discount and unlimited rice and soup. If you're a member of Chubby Cattle, that doesn't extend to this restaurant. But we were told at the end of the night that points could be transferred? The host said we could transfer points later after the app was downloaded. When we tried to clarify what the host meant, she said actually we had already paid so the points could no longer be transferred. Was pretty miffed about that. As for the food, it's okay. Skewers were tasty, especially the finger meat. The patty itself is super tiny. Adding cheese is not really worth it. They also serve the patties at different times, so sometimes you can be done while someone else is still waiting for their piece. Overall, didn't feel like it was worth the price. You also have to account for luck and timing. After we sat down, a bunch of people ended up leaving. However, earlier in the night people were sitting and drinking. Been wanting to try this place for a while now since it reminded me of Hikiniku to Come in Japan so I wanted to experience the same nostalgia. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had expected. 1) They recently took away the reservation option, so you have to get there early and put your name down on the waitlist. My friends put their names down around 4:40 pm, but we weren't seated til ~ 7 pm due to the limited number of seats inside. 2) Upon ordering, I learned that they don't do free refills on rice or soup unless you have a Chubby membership. Otherwise it's an extra $3. So when I was eating my patties, I felt like I was trying to save my rice to last the entire meal. 3) I ordered the combo/package with 3 patties. I was a bit surprised by how small the patties were. Additionally, I didn't get my 2nd patty until my friends already received their 3rd patty. After they finished their meals, they had to wait an extra ~10-15 min for me before I received my 3rd patty. Even though I didn't have a great experience, the staff were super nice. Chubby Don has been all the social media hype as of late. Having seen so many photos and viral reviews, I had to try Chubby Don for myself. Actually, I've never had Hikiniku to Come or other similar hamburg restaurants in Japan or Asia, so this is my formal first time trying hamburg by the grill in this fashion. Being so viral, there is still quite a wait. I came at 5:30 and still had to wait a half hour to be seated. But the staff are super attentive. The restaurant is small but super clean. Bar seating only but we got to watch all the grilling right there. I ended up ordering a kushiyaki and hamburg combo and sharing with my wife. For the kushiyaki, we got beef tongue, lychee pork, and zucchini with mentaiko. I loved the lychee pork and mentaiko zucchini, both were extremely flavorful. Chubby Don comes with a wide array of sauces. I ended up prioritizing the hamburg sauce and the daikon with ponzu. I put both sauces on rice and they were amazing. For the hamburg, I asked them to add the cheese and cheese snow, as that was popular. The cheese was nothing special, but the hamburg was amazing. Apparently it was 70% A5 wagyu and 30% angus. The beef was super juicy and soft. Amazing restaurant, with amazing service. Worth the hype. A bit expensive, but worth the investment. I would come back. read more

Service: Servers were attentive and nice throughout the process. Food would take a while to come out, but that's due to the logistics of figuring out what should serve out first. Food: I thought the food was good, but not as good as the original Hikiniku. Price: I knew that once this spot would open in the U.S. it would be significantly more expensive than the dupe. I paid $29-$30 for 2 people in Japan. Whereas I paid $85-$90 here in the USA. Obviously over here is much more expensive, but paying $15 a meal then paying $30-$35, then having to add tip just sucks. Thank you April for a wonderful meal and excellent service! I was able to dine in during soft opening today - I ordered the 2 hamburger patties with 3 kushiyaki (picked a5 Wagyu, thick cut beef tongue, caramelized pineapple) combo and additional negima (chicken and scallion) and lychee pork belly. The lychee pork belly was probably my favorite (tip: add a little bit of yakiniku salt to balance the sweetness of the lychee and it's perfect)! The lychee is sweet and juicy and compliments the cooked pork belly so well - I let it sit on the hot plate a little longer and it crisped up one side so nicely. Probably added that I really like lychee! I never imagined it in a dish with meat before, but I loved it! The wagyu broth is a nice refresher throughout the meal, it is very light. I did prefer the plain patty over the cheese patty - only because the American cheese was too "cheeseburger" to me and I thought the original patty I ate first was so perfectly flavored and juicy that the cheese one in comparison, overpowered the patty! I did try to put my pasteurized egg over the original patty (and failed) but it complimented the course with having it mixed into the rice. I enjoyed all the skewers, especially the nice caramelized pineapple, like a sweet treat to end dinner with. I'd be perfectly content coming back for another combo or just order tons of kushiyaki! It was nice being able to watch everything be cooked and prepared while dining- even watched them top the pineapples with sugar and add the mentaiko to the zucchinis before grilling. However, do wish the AC system circulated a bit better as it was quite hot inside even in the evening. If you've never tried Japan's version of hamburger over rice, this is probably as close as you're gonna get in both taste and experience. Chubby Don's spot at Santa Anita mall has been sitting here for years and I am so happy that it's finally open. Burgers cooked over charcoal, served with rice, and your choice of various sauces and spices to change things up if you want. I got the 2 burger combo with 3 skewers and couldn't have been more pleased with the food. The burgers look small at first glance, but you'll quickly realize you have more than enough food by the time you're onto your second patty. The skewers are all really tasty with the beef tongue being a BIG standout as amazingly tasty. The rice is nice and fresh and the soup has a nice peppery kick to it. One thing I have to call out by itself -- the cheese. The American looking slice on the burger is scrumptious but the cheese "snow" they shred over the patty is out of this world. I personally didn't expect how good it would be and kind of regret not getting cheese on both of my burgers. The staff are all very kind and I really appreciated how on top of things they were. In terms of the restaurant itself, it is a little on the smaller side but there's enough space in between each chair that you don't feel crowded. So let's dive into this certified Hikuniku to come from Japan dupe (full disclaimer: I am absolutely fed up with Chubby Group restaurants in general so I have explicit bias). Waitlist and wait times: 2/5. I got here a full 15 minutes ahead of when they open for dinner, put my name down, and my wait was a grand total of 2 hours! I'm not 100% sure if they were still in soft opening, but the waitlist was a bit of a mess. Despite being 2nd in line at one point, I was told I was supposed to check in an hour ago? I saw a party that asked for patio seating, was told they couldn't do patio seating, then was told they're setting up the patio and they would be seated next, and then were never seated. Might be a point to polish. Food and interior: 3/5. So the food is definitely solid and they did a very excellent job of blatantly ripping off the interior concept of fancy Japanese hamburg steak from Hikuniku to come (down to the boxes of seasoning and bar seating). However, there were definitely some flaws. First, our grills were never turned on and they serve the hamburg steak patties rare/med rare depending on the phase of the moon apparently. Meat was good for sure, but the inconsistency, the slightly small serving size, coupled with the grills not being immediately on when we were seated was a miss. Another mild complaint I had was that rice and soup refills were locked behind a paywall; you essentially had to either have or purchase a membership to get rice refills. Like...okay I get that you want to sell that but rice refills...let's not pretend like you can't refill rice without hemorrhaging money. Service: 4/5. Our server was Dylan. First things first, Dylan is excellent I have literally 0 complaints about Dylan. Now for the second thing, we were a party of 3, we each got 3 patties and they all came at different times at different temps. Consistency and operations are definitely things I think can be improved, but in terms of overall helpfulness and friendliness I think service was great. Overall, a pretty good experience, especially considering they are still in their soft opening phase. The food quality was good, and I liked the concept of having smaller portions so you can try a few different things. The wagyu hamburger steak was definitely my favorite. It was juicy and flavorful without being overly fatty, which can sometimes happen with wagyu. It also reminded me a little of a Japanese-style loco moco, especially with the rice and egg. Another highlight was the mentaiko zucchini. I honestly didn't expect much from it, but it turned out to be one of the best things I ordered. Very flavorful and worth trying. The foie gras, on the other hand, was TINY. I knew it was an add-on and wasn't expecting a huge portion, but this was almost miniature-sized. It tasted fine, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Members can get unlimited rice and beef soup. They have quite a few sauces and seasonings at the table, so it's fun to try different combinations with the meat. I also really liked that you can help yourself to the pickled radish. Service was good overall. Came on a Monday evening after work and it was the shortest wait time we've seen so we decided to wait and try it out. Took about an hour and was seated immediately. The host and chefs were all really friendly and helpful with questions about the menu. I went with the 2 patty, 2 meat skewers, 1 vegetable skewer options. It was delicious! I went with the a5 short rib skewer with wasabi (pretty much meat butter), wagyu finger meat with wasabi, and the zucchini with mentaiko kushi. For the patties I ordered one with cheese which came with a slice of American cheese and grated Parmesan. The meal comes with rice, a soft boiled egg, grated daikon, and what I believe is pork broth soup which was seasoned well (a bit heavier on the pepper side). One of my favorite things about this place is the sauce/seasoning bar is at your hands. You can get as much green chili, radish, seasoning dips or whatever you please as you're eating your meal. My food items arrived at very different times - I got my kushiyaki a whole 20 minutes before my hamburger patties and then I had to wait 15 minutes just for rice and then once I got my first patty, it took 30 minutes before I got the second one. Also I arrived at the time of my reservation but had to wait an extra hour after. It's very small and limited seating inside. Lots of smoke inside the restaurant. Staff were all very nice and accommodating. We tried on patty with cheese and one with it and honestly without the cheese taste very good. The natural juicy umami of the Wagyu I preferred more without the cheese. One improvement is they should torch the cheese because the grill is hot enough for the cheese to melt. I think this would make the texture even better. Overall ambiance is good, not too loud and you can still talk but you're searing very close to one another and other parties so conversations are heard amongst each other. Good concept and great food, but the logistics need work. Right now during soft opening you must make a reservation to dine here. I really wanted to love Chubby Don because the food is good, the staff is nice, and the concept is genuinely fun. Unfortunately, some of the restaurant logistics take away from what could otherwise be a really enjoyable experience. The biggest issue for me is that there is no restroom inside the restaurant. Having to leave and find a public restroom at Santa Anita mall is a surprisingly significant inconvenience and takes away from the dining experience. The seating is another drawback. Most of the seating is high bar-stool-style seating, which isn't particularly comfortable or relaxing, especially when you're dining with a group. It's also not a great setup for conversation. The ordering system also needs better communication. Guests are encouraged to have each person in the party place their own order so the kitchen can prepare and deliver everything more efficiently. In practice, though, this meant our food came out in a somewhat random sequence. Some people in the same party had already received all of their food and were enjoying their second or third round while others in the same party were still waiting for theirs. It made the meal feel disjointed when we really just wanted to eat together. There also wasn't enough explanation about how things worked for first timers. For example, we initially thought the bamboo cups were for water, when they are actually used as trash containers for the skewer sticks. We also didn't realize that the scissors are provided so you can cut up the food and continue cooking rare meat on the hot metal plate. These little details would have been much easier if someone had given us a quick explanation when we were waiting. The value was also difficult for me personally. The sets are the value combos, and members get a $5 discount on the sets, which is nice. But since I don't eat rice, I ended up spending around $60 on hamburger patties and skewers and still felt hungry afterward. At that price point, I found myself thinking I could have gone to Chubby Cattle or Chubby Mart instead and had a more comfortable sit-down meal with friends. That said, the candied pineapple skewer was outstanding. I've had plenty of grilled pineapple, but I've never had a pineapple skewer that tasted this good. That was easily the highlight of the meal. Overall, I like what Chubby Don is trying to do, and I think there is a lot of potential here. The food and staff are good, but the seating, restroom situation, ordering flow, and lack of clear instructions make the experience feel more complicated and less comfortable than it needs to be. The hamburg steak was very tender and the process for the finishing cook was nice as well. Dylan also explained everything very thoroughly and helped us out with everything along the way. Ambiance is pretty chill and bar seating only, so you can watch the cooks work and observe the process of your food from start to finish. If you like dinner with a show, I definitely suggest trying this place out at least once if you're in the area. The lychee pork belly was great and I would highly suggest the thick cut tongue as well. I was thoroughly surprised and definitely enjoyed everything I ate. read more

Somehow I was able to get a reservation at the much anticipated soft opening of Chubby Don and we were so excited. They still have some hiccups in timing of food, like skewers took a while, we had our Hamburg but no rice, but I am sure they will iron those issues out over time. The Wagyu angus patty was not heavy and was juicy. The cheese was a nice add on but not necessary. There are so many sauces to dip and my fav were the Hamburg sauce and the green chili sauce. Skewers were grilled to perfection- got extra of the tongue and lychee pork belly. Finished off with the brûléed pineapple. Sooo good. read more
