My wife and I dined at Chunbo last night for the first time. The decorum, as many have noted, is somewhat garish, and that's a good thing. It's not as well done as Hunan Taste in Denville (whose outdoor and indoor furnishings are a bit more refined and eye-catching), but it's still interesting! The main dining room feels spacious and not overly crowded, which I liked. The lighting was a bit too bright. They could afford to install some dimmers and create a more ambient experience. As for the meal, our waiter was courteous and prompt. No complaints. My orange chicken was tasty, and my egg roll was as well. The table chips were a little stale, I admit. My wife's bean curd general tso's was a bit overly sweet and could have been cooked a little longer to make it crispier. Obviously neither of these meals is a "healthy" meal, but that's the case with most Chinese food. It's a treat to be had once in a while. I liked that the tables are stocked with salt and pepper, as I frequently find myself asking for them at other Chinese restaurants. The area in Newton where this is located fields a bit industrial, located directly beside a building with metal piping strewn throughout, and there is not much lighting on the exterior. Overall, upon first visit, I am giving this 3 of 5 stars, but I reckon I will be re-visiting at some point, and will update this review. read more

New to the area and relied on the internet for reviews for Chinese food. We got take out of basic dishes such as egg roll, miso soup, and general tsos chicken. Food was ready when we went to pick it up and stayed warm for the drive home. Everything was yummy. The chicken could have used less breeding and they didn't include any sauces which did make it not a 5 star experience. They also do not deliver which is frustrating when you have little kids. We get sushi every Sunday here and it's usually very consistent and good. Awesome decor, their miso soup and tea are great starters. Teriyaki bento boxes are always good, good portions, the drinks are made very strong and actually very cheap. We love this place. read more

Wow where do I begin? My boyfriend and I go here every once and a while. Food is usually ok. Our waiter was an older man and first he rushed our order. Once we got the food, the waiter hovered over us as if he was trying to rush us out. And this is the worst part. As he was hovering not even five feet away, he let out a huge loud fart as we were still eating. Not even one fart, there was multiple. I couldn't even touch my food and neither could my boyfriend. Solid Chinese (American style) restaurant. I tend to go with the chef's special dishes and they are properly prepared and beautifully presented. The shrimp dishes have jumbo shrimp cooked perfectly - not overdone so they're not tough. The vegetables are always fresh and nicely al dente. One gripe is with the steamed dumplings - the dough is apparently hand made, but it isn't rolled out as I'd prefer so it's very chewy. On one occasion I've had sushi (I'm usually reluctant to have raw fish so far from the sea - but I noticed they don't serve it on Monday's so it must be fresh on Tuesday). It was tasty, but the portions were a bit small and the rice overwhelmed both the rolls and the sashimi. I tend to stop by when I'm in the area as it is a solid bet. read more

Ive been going here since a child and have NEVER had a complaint until tonight. My waiter was rude and very short with us. He snapped at us when we asked if they had certain drinks or menu things. He then asked if we were done eating about 10 mins after we started. He took our plates to bring us our left overs and left most of our food out which we didnt see til we left. He also asked us for a tip before we were even leaving our table. Arent tips something we leave if we want to if we had a good dining experience not something u ask for. Stay away from the sushi. Used to be good, but I and other locals have started to find the sushi is served rotten, frozen and otherwise "fishy". It's a shame because the sushi used to be good, and the other food at Chun Bo is good. However, owners have real customer management problems, as the reastaurant will argue with you and try to charge for some of the sushi returned as bad. read more

This place is god awful. They refused to give us a booth (we saw they're were plenty booths open) even though we explained a family member has a back problem and prefers a booth. I have eaten here with my family three times in about ten years or more. Hoped three times the charm but unfortunately it wasn't. The service is sometimes horrible which is surprising for a Chinese restaurant. Most Chinese patrons are attentive to customers. The food was is bland and tasteless as another reviewer here posted. I had shrimp the last time I was there and it was disgusting. Had a plastic taste as if the shrimp was stored and frozen for a long time in cheap freezer bags and took on the taste of the plastic bag. The drinks are not much better. Very watered down and not very fancy looking like you expect from exotic Asian drinks. Unfortunately I have to give at least one star. So I will give the one star for the decor. Been going to chun bo's since the very first time Wendy& Jimmy open up their doors , love the food and drinks , was even there when they reopen up after they remodeled my family was sent a invite , great night that was , never went to any other Chinese restaurant in town was always chum bo but in the last year the food has gone down hill and after tonight the food I order was tasteless and I tossed it into the trash . I used to like it for takeout when I lived in Newton but feel the quality of the food has gone way downhill. First off the sushi rolls are tiny. Don't even consider getting the sushi with all the terrific sushi places in nearby Sparta. I used to really like the General Tso's chicken but when I just got it recently it has gone from being perfect from way to sweet and syrupy with almost no spicy flavor at all. I've only eaten in there a few times but the service was always rude when I did with the server mumbling things under her breath after leaving the table. read more

Heard many nice things about this place and it turned out to be ordinary fare. They win on decor and atmosphere. The place looks like a Chinese temple with beautiful dining areas and traditional asian motifs everywhere. Its a nice set up, but I like to go out of for the food more than the environment. They have a strong local following and were busy on a random weekday. Had a mixed veg lunch combo with friend rice. Friend had chicken and veg combo which was okay. Soups were good. Second time ordering from this place. The first time the food was mediocre. I gave Chun Bo another chance since the options in the area are rather limited. After my wife called in the order and I picked up the food, I noticed I was given chicken teriyaki instead of shrimp teriyaki. I went back into the restaurant to see if they could correct the error. The woman behind the counter didn't seem to care and said the person who called in the order requested chicken. I was next to my wife when she called, and she clearly requested shrimp. It wasn't worth arguing over $13, but a little customer service in this case would have gone a long way. Although the service was quick & friendly, we found the food to be very bland. The fried scallops tasted like heated frozen food. I came here 2 years ago because my now 7 year old daughter loved the look of the authentic Chinese atmosphere. The food then was the worst I ever had. Poor quality ribs( the bone would bend), garbage shrimp and just plain old tasteless food. Much to my little girls disdain we never came back until... My friend came over my house and told me that the ownership had changed and the food is now delicious. So tonight I went back. Now mind you we are originally from NYC but now live in Sparta and we know good Chinese food. We are talking about quality and not an abundance of shit! So we come here tonight not sure if we are going to be let down majorly again. The food was simply out of this world. We ordered ribs that were very delicious, shrimp with lobster sauce that was probably the best I ever had. Dim sum comparable to china town, triple delight that was so fresh. And for all you portion size food animals yes the portions were big but more importantly good quality and delicious! So for the record we found out that the old owner took on a new partner and is now a silent partner. Stay silent buddy because you don't know what you are doing. Americans are not stupid! I went here for my brithday with my friends a while back. I've heard good things about the food and I had high expations. When we got there, the whole time we were getting werid looks from the staff. There was 7-8 in my group and we may have been a little funny looking, on account we hanging out outcide all day and most of us were younger. We got a couple of plates and we were sharing with ourselves so we could all try a little of everything. The manager proceeded to come to our table and go of on this whole bit about how " This wasn't a mcdonalds" and if we didnt rack up our bill to at least 10$ per person, then they were going to charge us. Even though it is ten miles from our home, we have ordered from Chun Bo for over twenty years because that was formerly where to go for the best Chinese food in the area. We never had a problem until last night when we ordered cold noodles, steamed dumplings, and the Seafood Delight. The dumplings were all dough with very little filling which was disappointing but edible with the flavorful sauce. However, the Seafood Delight, which costs $18.95, had absolutely no flavor. The white sauce tasted like nothing more than cornstarch and water. There was no onion, garlic, ginger, or salt flavor to the sauce, making it totally unappetizing. Because it was so expensive, we returned to the restaurant today to give them a chance to make things right. The woman my wife spoke to assured her that white sauce is always nothing more than corn starch and water and told me to ask for brown sauce in the future. When my wife told her that we wanted credit towards another meal, she reluctantly agreed but said she could not give us full credit because we had eaten roughly half of the meal. My wife should have corrected her and told her that we threw away half of the meal. Instead she told her to keep her credit, that we would not be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants that want to please their customers. We will not waste our money at Chun Bo. read more

Overall the first time I went there it didn't look half bad before I got to know the people and try the food. When I got there nobody was in the entire restaurant. The terrible music in the back ground is loud and obnoxious and I can't even hear my self think. The manager is very impolite and rude. The food overall tasted terrible. I ordered General Tso's chicken as a meal and they came back with my chicken extremely over cooked. I told them I couldn't eat this and I wouldn't pay and they refused to let me leave without paying. Eventually I just payed the money and left. Kids working the counter probably were the nicest ones I met. They were the only people in this abomination of a restaurant that were polite and respectful. DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS PLACE! Everyone there is a terrible person and this business needs to close down. Hands down worst restaurant on the east coast and hopefully those damn Chinese will learn to be respectful every once and a while. Damn Chinks.
