Nice venue, the food was bland. The cook burnt the kettle chips and we got fries instead. The waitress did not check on us after the food was out, only to grab the bill. I know that most people would be happy with fries .. but they were not what I ORDERED. The grease from the fries obviously needed to be changed too! While the staff was amazing the breakfast buffet was mediocre at best. (I have had cafeteria food better that this.) It was luke warm at best and you could tell most was previously frozen products. Ordered eggs over easy, country potatoes & white toast. No white toast, only sourdough. I ordered bacon sort, and the bacon came out crisp. Ok place, the bartenders are friendly and nice. Hamburgers were good, wings were lacking, not taste substance. There was only 6 wings, which was way to expensive for the price. We sat at the bar, chairs were regular height which made it seem strange. Bar chairs were also uncomfortable. This was an off hand visit because everything in Keystone was closed... much to my surprise and my guests it was EXCELLENT!! The bartender was very sweet ma be her name was Jen.. I can't remember.. what I can say was she was excellent at her customer service and our food was really good! Crispy Chicken Salad-mine, fantastic and actual house made ranch!! Chicken Fried Steak- but pricey but you are in a tiny town in A gorgeous place.. my friend said it was super good! Her son had a burger and he was happy as well!! We stopped here at 7pm and didn't get out until 9pm, not for the dining experience but because of the slow service. 30 mins for the salad station to get our salads and 40 mins for the bar to get our drinks. There were only about 8 tables. Steaks: ribeyes and prime rib were good. Chicken & Biscuits: chicken was good, biscuit was too thick & dense, the chorizo gravy was like cement, and the blueberry compote had no business on the plate. For a rustic dish, it was all piled in one place, trying to be fine dining. I think the chef was trying to be too "chefy". Management: when the manager checked on us, we requested the bake potato we ordered instead of the sweet potato we received. He rolled his eyes and made a big deal out of a little request. This place appears to have poor management, everything was slow and new servers don't seemed trained well. Our new server was very nice (her 1st night) but she should have someone shadowing her. The huge table (10 people) next to us were very rude to her and the manager did nothing. They all left about half their food on each plate. I'm not surprised to see that no one's reviewed this place. It's not easy to find, is several blocks away from downtown where all the tourists are, and that's a GOOD thing if you don't want to be near gawking tourists. It's kind of back a ways from the highway if you're coming from Rapid City. To be honest, much like the Braun Hotel of Hot Springs, SD, I've driven by this place for over 13 years, but the big parking lot never had more than two or three cars parked out front. In fact, you'd almost guess the place was closed. But this winter, my friend and I decided to stop by here. And we're so GLAD we did. If you like history, like old things, love antiques, then this is your place. It opened for business in 1971, but before that, it was an original barn/ranch, and in the entryway, there are tons of old pictures, the original antique wall phone, lots of memorabilia from old family who owned the ranch. I think it has a new owner now, a very tanned lady who moved here from somewhere else. But she was very nice and knowledgeable about the building's history. Me being nosy and interested in history, asked to see the upstairs which would have been the hay mow, in its day. The place is just adorable. I wished I wouldn't have waited 13 years to try the place. We went there for a late-in-the-day lunch, so we were the only customers. It was very quiet and intimate. I had the soup of the day, which was wild rice soup, and I split an appetizer of fried mushrooms, which were fairly good. My friend had a hamburger which looked superb. There's a pool table/lounge, so it might be a locals hang out, is my guess. And there is a beautiful stone fireplace there in the lounge, too. read more

Great good and service. We were exhausted on a Sunday night and this was the only restaurant still open but it was awesome, we loved it!

We stopped here because the powderhouse was too busy. Lucky us!!!! There was a wait so we sat at the bar and had a few while we waited. The menu is small but the food was very good. We were traveling through town and staying at the Best Western next door. Due to the proximity to the Best Western and the late hour we arrived, we chose this restaurant for convenience (they are open until 11pm). However we were pleasantly surprised! The food was tasty (a unique take on home style dishes) and the service was super friendly. During our time there, they lost power due to a lightening storm. Despite this, they went out of their way to make us comfortable and still deliver our food! The locals at the bar were also friendly and gave us some good advice for our stay in the Black Hills. read more

The service was amazing, drinks spectacular as well....the food was phenomenal! We sat out on the porch, ordered drinks and food, and it started raining. Chute Rooster was our alternate option, since the Alpine Inn had an almost two hour wait for their famous filet mignon dinner. With decent reviews and having noticed the barn (restaurant) while driving by a few times, we decided to give it a try. It was listed as a steakhouse. It is not. They do offer a smoked prime rib dinner at $28, and that is the ONLY steak on the menu. The rest of the menu consisted of burgers, a few salads, appetizers and desserts. My guys ordered a burger and I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and fries, since I wasn't sure the salad would be enough, and didn't want to fork out another $100 on dinner. The burgers presented well, with the CR logo branding on the toasted bun. My guys said they were good, but a little bland. My fries were great. The salad . . . just okay - definitely not worth what we paid. While the food was okay, the service was less than desirable. We saw our waiter 2 or 3 times, with lots of time in between. After waiting 20 minutes after finishing our meal, we finally flagged down our waiter to ask for the bill and then made a prompt exit. Overall, the food was probably a 3 out of 5, the pricing was too high (for what was served) and the service was poor. They have a nice atmosphere, and that's about it. Either this place is labor starved or poorly managed. Also the restaurant is very warm and uncomfortable. The "menu" was on the wall inside the restaurant and consisted of bar-type foods only. 6 wings for $10, side salad for $8, cheese curds, pulled pork sandwich, and pizza. That was about it! We should have left then. I ordered 12-piece chicken wings with a side salad. I asked for a vinaigrette or Italian dressing. They didn't have it (a common dressing), so they brought me olive oil. The salad was iceberg lettuce and mozzarella cheese. It was $8! The food came out on paper plates and paper trays. I was extremely disappointed in this restaurant. Ok where do I begin...let's start with the servers who barely spoke English and the wine/beer menu was a printed 4x6 piece of paper. The $22 ribeye was flavorless and poor quality meat. The baked potato was the best part! The skin was nice and crispy with sea salt. My husband and I spilt the 20oz prime rib which was flavorful. Lucky we got he last one as the couple next ya tried to order it and was sold out. The salads came out after our meal was served. I swear the veggies were Green Giants frozen mixed veggies. Terrible. Very slow service. The salad was just a 6 pieces of lettuce with two small tomatoes two slices of cucumber. The best part of the salad was the ranch dressing. We had high hopes for this place but were very disappointed! staff working spent a lot of time on the outside patio smoking while another ran around opening windows and doors complaining about people running the AC in the building. We stopped in for a early dinner with only a few other people there eating. We were seated in the bar at a high top table never being asked if we would like to be in the bar side or dinning side; never knew about the dinning area till later on. There was an older couple who were also seated at the bar side and ended up leaving after being told they could not move to the other side dining area where they were also seating people with a ton of open tables. Staff dropping the f word every other word at the bar. Cheese balls were great.. but the burger was horrible.. I ordered a burger with cheese and bacon (both Cost extra) along with tomato and lettuce, what arrived was a plain burger on a bun and nothing else.. just a patty on a bun... Sent that back to get fixed and when it came back the lettuce was old shriveled and turning brown. The burger had no flavor at all.. nothing .. and the fries tasted like cooking oil. On a road trip with the family over the summer, elders were tired from a long day of being tourists, stayed back at the hotel and my wife and I were able to sneak out for a late night bite and drink. Both were delicious and,while choices are scarce at the time we went, glad they didn't mail it in with the creativity of the menu. Service was ok, waitress was young and didn't know her drink menu very well, but she was probably barely old enough to serve. If in the area again would definitely check it out. read more

I have to tell you I don't write a lot of reviews. When they are great or not great. This one was hard. It had such promising review and their are not a ton of options in town. But there was just too much to ignore. Put on a 20 minute wait. Get that respect it. But when we got sat it was probably another hour and a half until we got our food with two kids late. Yes no one should have to make concessions because you choose to eat late with your kid. But almost a 2.5 hour experience js hard to swallow. Not to mention I spoke to the owner and it was well it's normally an hour so 45 minutes is good. I don't have the staff and just all around we are thriving and it's worth it. But I grew up in the restaurant business. The lack of cares and overall this is what it is was hard to understand. I'm glad they are doing well my soul is happy for them but in a tourist town it's hard to understand the incredible time commitment here. So hopefully this is warning is for the next family who hopes for food in a small town after a long day. read more
