This place has a great atmosphere. The food and the service however were nothing to brag about.

Had a delicious lunch there sitting on the patio looking at the beauty of the black hills. Grant our server was attentive and awesome. We had the lunch burger and bison burger with fries and all was delicious. Great lunch special with a beer! Owner chatted with us on the patio and told us the history of the building. Great food And drinks. Went on St.Patty's and they had lots of fun specials. Service was excellent, the bartender Diana created a fun atmosphere with her energy and specialty drinks. Stopped here for appetizers on the way through town. Ended up staying at a nearby hotel. We absolutely adore this place! The chef Aleaha is amazing and Adam at the bar is superb. Long story short, we were here for appetizers at lunch and then came back for dinner. You seriously need to meet these people! Order the rib eye, or shrimp or tuna or chislic. I have to tell you I don't write a lot of reviews. When they are great or not great. This one was hard. It had such promising review and their are not a ton of options in town. But there was just too much to ignore. Put on a 20 minute wait. Get that respect it. But when we got sat it was probably another hour and a half until we got our food with two kids late. Yes no one should have to make concessions because you choose to eat late with your kid. But almost a 2.5 hour experience js hard to swallow. Not to mention I spoke to the owner and it was well it's normally an hour so 45 minutes is good. I don't have the staff and just all around we are thriving and it's worth it. But I grew up in the restaurant business. The lack of cares and overall this is what it is was hard to understand. I'm glad they are doing well my soul is happy for them but in a tourist town it's hard to understand the incredible time commitment here. So hopefully this is warning is for the next family who hopes for food in a small town after a long day. read more

Our group of 10 didn't seen to phase them at all, and they had several other large groups that busy night. The menu was a little confusing. My uncle the chef and I were both under the impression that I was getting a steak, cooked medium. It was a cheeseburger, well done. A little dry, but good. Instead of fries, I got the mashed potatoes. Which were also dry, because they were instant. The minute you get an ice cream scoop shaped serving of potatoes, it is like a flashback to every horrifying school lunch ever eaten. Which is what they tasted like too. So if you want to pay more money and have the cafeteria lunch feel, go here. Everyone's steaks and ribs were good, which is why there are still three stars on the review. read more

We are so happy to have Ryan at the helm of this restaurant! Those of us who have been coming to the Black Hills for a long while remember the Chute with such fond memories, and it's wonderful to have excellent owners running this business again! We love coming here for excellent bloody marys, terrific wings, great burgers and good conversation with the excellent staff. Definitely give it a shot, and remember when reading reviews 2021 was the worst year on record for staffing in the Hills....every one of us was running on half the staff we needed for one of the busiest tourist seasons we've seen. We are visiting from MN and staying in Custer. We stopped at Firehouse and the bartender recommended the food here and informed us it recently changed ownership and a new chef. He was spot on! The food here is amazing and I wish the chef loved closer to us! The staff is friendly and fast service. I hope this place really thrives because it is a diamond in the rough! This is a great little place that you might not find on your own. We encountered fantastic service. Super friendly and out of their way helpful. Also got to see a band (well, 2 dudes that sang and played guitar). They were great! I would defnitely go back. Tried to eat here. Arrived right at 5 p.m. Two bartenders working in the bar and a few people sprinkled at tables. Waited for 5 minutes to be seated. Bartenders totally ignored us. Could have said, "someone will be with you in a minute". We finally left. read more

Don't be put off by the dilapidated sign. They are open and cooking great food! Fried mushrooms were huge, hand battered, and tasty. The chute burger was great, the shaved prime rib with mushrooms etc was a little salty but still mighty tasty. I liked the cabin-esque ambiance. It's like Desperados but maybe a little more genuine. Our server was sweet and had a memory like a lockbox, i was impressed. read more

Great steakhouse. Very friendly service and the food was great. Prime rib sandwich was fabulous and the baked potatoes were so good with the crispy skin. Took special requests with no issue. New Owners opened March 2020. AKA Chute Roosters Smokehouse. Thanks to Shawn and his friendly staff for great food, drink and making us feel welcome and comfortable. Ate here twice during our stay. Enjoyed a yummy thin crusted combo pizza and dark beer one night; and brisquit platter and prime rib burger tonight with a sweet fruity alcoholic beverage they call a Purple Haze. They are one of the few restaurants in Hill City that stays open late! Recommend stopping in and enjoying a meal here. read more

We were here for Mothers Day brunch, May 2019. Slow to seat us, even though they were less than half full. The buffet was the only menu option. Very limited salad bar. The breakfast items were all marginally warm, as were the lunch options. Someone was carving prime rib, it was the right temp. I asked the host to microwave my plate. Ten minutes later, I asked the hostess to find my plate. The host came then and said they had just filled a new plate for me. It was equally as cold. After several attempts, I finally convinced our waitress to microwave my plate. Others in our party said the canister flames under the servers were all extinguished. I was concerned about us getting ill from the cold eggs and cold chicken, luckily we did not. The only dessert option on the "buffet" were small portion brownies. No one apologized. Stopped by this place because nothing else was open and I would have to be very, very hungry to return. Service was lack luster and we were not in any hurry. The Steaks were bad, tasteless and poor, which is saying something for a Ribeye. Overpriced also. read more

Went there for supper (a party of two) around 6:30 and got seated right away at the bar. The first thing the server informed us about was that there were only two servers and two kitchen/cooks, I was not concerned as it did not appear to be overly busy. We ordered a drink and the server proceeded to tell us everything (food items) on the menu that they did NOT have...which was a lot. Basically they had hamburger/cheeseburger but only in the bison patty and some pasta dishes....whatever...I ordered the mushroom and swiss. Shortly after I was informed that they had the mushrooms but were out of the swiss and offered to substitute cheddar. Long story short, we sat for over an hour waiting to get a side salad (save your money it was 3 forks worth in a small bowl) and my now mushroom and cheddar with french fries. After about 45 minutes we did offer to pay our tap and leave but we were assured that our order would be right out. The entire time we were there, we were never checked on or offered a second drink. The food wasn't the worst but definitely not worth everything that goes along with it. Hopefully they are able to figure out staffing and get somebody who is competent to do the ordering. read more

The family and I were looking for a place to have dinner during our visit to the area during Labor Day weekend. Being Friday night, most places had an hour wait. We called this place and they said if we came right now they would hold us a table. Bad mistake. The parking lot had about 7 cars and the place looked closed. When we walked in, I immediately recognized a seedy locals bar. Even though the place was almost empty, we waited at the hostess stand by the bar for five minutes and no one sat us. The waitress and female bartender kept walking past us and saying they would seat us in a minute. We finally gave up and walked out. This is the seedy biker bar I love to go to when I am by myself, or with my buds, to get drunk and get into some trouble (in my youth), but not when you have your family/kids with you. read more

Food is actually really good. Their cook obviously has some great training. 3 tables including our group of 4. Now the bad news. 50 minute wait before appetizers showed up. Asked at least 3 times for plates to eat them off of, and the very young waitress had a horrible attitude like we were imposing. New bartender (started today) is probably the best employee here. She needs to be running the place. She jumped in when she saw everyone else standing around, got drinks, took orders, organized her bar even tracked down a garbage because there wasn't one. No manager in sight to even show her where things were. Hopefully they get some training in customer service for the rest of their staff because they will kill this place. read more

Long wait for expensive terrible food served by crabby servers. We saw the terrible reviews here but read one that said it was under new ownership and give it a chance so we did. Do not make the same mistake we did! It took an hour for four simple entrees to come. When they did come my pasta was over cooked and barely warm!! The flavor was not bad but it was drowning in sauce. Two of the other three entrees were also so bad we did not finish them (and we are not picky eaters). To top it all off, my 11-year old son was cold - at one point one of the staff went out a side door and left it wide open. A cold draft was pouring in (it is in the 30s outside). We asked the server about why the door was open because it was cold and she said someone just stepped out because they needed to grab a couple tee shirts and that they would come back soon and close it and then she walked away. Not a care that it was cold. We were making eye contact with other customers who were also cold and who were waiting for their food. So sad because the old barn looks cool. But everything else about this place is bad. I can't remember the last time I had such a bad experience in so many ways (and we go out a lot!). Please go somewhere else. read more

We traveled from out of state to ride the 1880 Christmas train and then stopped here for dinner.It was a very nice building inside and out and the staff was friendly however that's where the food stopped! The menu was a couple pieces of paper, the food was very bad and over priced. Plus it took 2 1/2 hours to get our food.Then to top off the poor experience the manager brought the bill out and said "oh yah, our card machine broke a few days ago so we only take cash or check or you can go down the road to an ATM." Wow! Sure glad we had enough cash for the huge bill! I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

It was ok. The food was mediocre. It was nice in there and our waiter was amazing. The pizza sauce isn't traditional but it was still yummy.

I rarely write bad reviews but this was the worst food and service we have had in years. It took a very long time to order. The table next to us, seated 5 minutes before us, was on their dessert before our food came. It was not busy at all. When it finally arrived, my order was wrong, overcooked, and incomplete. The server did not offer to bring the right order nor did she offer to adjust the tab. Nothing. And don't even think about getting an unsolicited drink refill! Just a really bad experience all the way around. There are other options in town, even during the off season. Go somewhere else. read more

This place is really terrible. The menu seems to claim that the owner is a trained chef, which I find very, very hard to believe. The menu is laughable, poorly arranged, very difficult to follow and understand, and the offerings are just bizarre. Our waiter was rude and horrible. The hostess and other staff were inattentive. Had a coupon for discount so as a local decided to try as they have new owners. First off 1,2,3 dollar beer choices helped start dinner off well. Frosted mugs were a nice touch. Because there are so many wonders throughout the Hill City / Custer region it was tough for us to be 'done with our day' by 6 PM each night when most stores and restaurants close (as opposed to Vegas...where everything closes late). We were referred to Chute Rooster by a local when we expressed that we were really just looking for some good home-cooked food. If you look for the restaurant (little side street and driveway off of Main Street, just to the north of the Best Western Golden Spike Inn) you will find it, otherwise it's easy to miss. We are so happy we went, during our stay in Hill City we ate dinner there most nights and were completely satisfied. Home made dinners, casual and friendly no pressure atmosphere for reasonable prices. I would very much recommend the Chute Rooster to my family and friends. read more
