The first time I had Chuy's I had enchiladas, rice, and beans and I wasn't impressed. I didn't go back for years until someone forced me to go. On my second visit I had fried shrimp tacos and a side salad...from that moment on my life changed. Wow, how could I go from unimpressed to life changing. I think its what I ordered. I grew up eating enchiladas and maybe the ones made here are just not for me. But they make excellent salads, tacos, nachos, homemade tortillas, and drinks! The Creamy jalapeño sauce is amazing and is great with the chips, tacos, and pretty much EVERYTHING! They should really bottle it and sell it. They have an excellent serve yourself FREE nacho bar during happy hour! It includes chips, queso, beans, and beef. You can even partake if you're at a table you just have to get up and get it yourself. The drinks are great and happy hour is always happy here! Love Tex Mex! Granted, this is not the best Tex Mex place in San Antonio. But it gets the job done. The margaritas are really good; especially the Coronita! Their dipping salsas for the chips are not bad. Usually get one of the combination dinner specials. The #1 Comida Deluxe usually gets the job done as it has a little bit of everything (enchiladas, guac, chile con queso, taco, etc). Came here for lunch this week was very disappointed with how small the menu is now and how tough and poorly seasoned the fajitas were. The waitress treated us like we were infected with COVID and disgusting, making it a point to be dramatic that she can't touch anything on our table, especially when out of habit I tried to hand back the menu that was given to me; even though we wore masks in until we got to our table so I don't know why the attitude. It made me feel very disrespected and uncomfortable. We are all going through a lot right now and sometimes lunch out is a nice escape until someone like this waits on you. I'll go somewhere next time that makes me feel welcome and comfortable and does their best to make us feel like we are still normal. read more

I really enjoyed their flautas! they were smaller and more numerous than I anticipated but they were very well cooked and flavorful. the means, rice, guacamole, sour cream, and salad were all perfect. I also split the beef fajitas with a friend and those were a little less than perfect. There was still pink inside, which I don't mind (but included in case others do mind) but I like a little more grilled on the outside. They were cooked and tender but i truly do want a pronounced maillard reaction on my grilled meats. The onions were perfect and the sides were plentiful and yay, including the corn tortillas there were far better than store bought garbage some other restaurants serve. Oh, and the tea was really good also! So often the tea is just a background item to help wash down the food but this tea was enjoyable all on its own! Overall I was really happy with the food, and my friend was happy with his beef enchiladas in ranchero sauce. Chuy's is one of our favorite places but the 1604 and 281 location has provided us with one of the worst experiences to date. First of all, stay away from the patio, smokers are allowed and women take the liberty of changing their children's poopy diapers right in front of you and the servers don't even bat an eye. I went for lunch at Chuy's on 281 and 1604. I have been there many times and I like it. I didn't look at the menu I usually order one of the two favorite things. I ordered the chili Rellenos. The waiter said they don't have them anymore. So I ordered the taco salad. Had it many times before served in a crispy taco bowl. The taco salad came with all the ingredients in a bowl but not in a taco shell or even with taco chips. The waiter informed me they don't serve it in a bowl anymore. So I took chips out of the bowl they give you at the beginning and put it in the salad. Very disappointing. I can find other Mexican restaurants to go to. read more

Only reason I eat a chuy's is because my mice loves this place. They don't offend the meals on the daily specials except in those days (even if your willing to pay extra). Chuy's has always been one of my favorite restaurants. Great food, great atmosphere, and they used to have great staff. My family went there last night and we had a great time, except for when I went to check in at with the hostess. There were two women standing there and one man. One woman was looking at the iPad and the other woman was talking/laughing with the man. I'm not the type to demand attention as soon as I walk in the door, and I'm a little shy. It oddly took several minutes for the hostesses and host to notice me, despite me standing right in front of them. Normally this wouldn't bother me but the fact that there where three people that blatantly ignored me was bothersome. If this was a one time occurrence I would not be even mentioning it, but it isn't. For the last 7 or so visits this is how I've been treated by this hostess/host. read more

Need a perfect happy hour place to go to? Well, I've got a great recommendation for you. CHUY'S! For happy hour, they have an open nacho bar. Crazy! Get as much chips, ground beef, queso, refried beans, and salsa as you want! You can order a beer or margarita to eat with your free food. The queso and ground beef at Chuy's is delicious! The ground beef is very flavorful and has the right amount of spice. The queso is what I would call a melted cheese addiction. Not too thick and not too runny, just right. The chips are average and a little too thin for my liking, but who cares when its going to be covered with beef and melted cheese! The queso isn't the best queso out there, but its still tasty for something that is free. Regardless, the queso and ground beef at Chuy's is still enjoyable and very appetizing. You will get the 'itis' (Urban dictionary it) after eating here. The margaritas are reasonably priced and 2-3 rounds is just about right to get you into a talking mood with your friends. Its a good size and has a well-balanced amount of alcohol. Advice: Don't arrive at happy hour too late because you'll have to either sit at the bar or scout for a table for your party. We have been to Chuy's an embarrassingly large number of times. Why? It's a people pleaser. The decor is fun and vibrant, the food is great, the drinks are good, and it is pretty affordable (especially if you share a large dish). Everyone in our family is thrilled when we choose Chuy's so we go. Um, a lot. The absolute only reason I am not giving Chuy's the fifth star is that the service, most of the time, is shotty. We went today for a late lunch and for no apparent reason waited over 15 minutes for someone to come take our drink order. The food always comes out quickly and everything is always pretty consistent. We have tried almost everything on the menu, but my husband and I usually share the Pancho's Nachos, grub on some uber delicious (and complementary) creamy jalapeno and chips. I can always tell how the service is going to be if they just bring salsa and make you ask for the creamy :) Oh, and the margaritas are good. They have a great kids menu and it even comes with a Push-Up, so that makes any kid gobble their food to earn their tasty treat. And mama's happy she doesn't have to pay extra for it! Some friends of ours have been raving about Chuy's for quite the while, so we decided to finally give it a try. According to them, the Chuy's in Schertz is best, but this one was closer to us. First of all, ambiance: wow! This place is like stepping inside a psychedelic Mexican rocket ship. Elvis, airplanes, bright colors, tiki huts... it's a deliriously interesting stimulus overload. Next, food. Yum! I ordered the fajitas, which were pretty darn good. My favorite part? The free, yes, I said free, nacho bar occurring in the back of a shiny red trunk screwed into the wall. Mm. Unlimited queso = bad idea. Finally, the wait. This is my least favorite part. The place was packed, they kept on running out of chips at the nacho bar, and our food took almost an eternity to arrive. Moral of the story: fun place, good food, long wait. This location has gone so terribly down hill in the last few years. Our experience with the server Korianna was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in 20+ years. Incredibly rude, disrespectful, acted completely annoyed by simple requests like water, silverware. Our server rolled her eyes so many times over the course of our 45 min meal that I was worried they would have permanent damage. Their long blonde hair hung down into her lap and often got into the chips, Sauces and dinner plates. Korianna attempted to memorize our order, then completely screwed it up. No apology, no my fault, not a word. I would avoid this location at all costs. I should have known when we walked in at 6:30pm on a Saturday night and the place was practically empty. My family came in from the Northeast last night and my brother suggested Chuys. OK, not my first pick - but hey, I was impressed before. The day was glorious and the lit up bridge to the entrance made those cold Yankees feel like they were in another country all together. We had a party of 8 people and asked to be seated outside during the lunch rush. Not only were the waitstaff accommodating, but they served with a big smile. Their manners were articulate and graceful. Cool. The food was also quite good. Nothing too special but it was satisfying and inexpensive. 8 people under $70 isn't bad. Everything at Chuy's is good. No, not good, great! The drinks are always spot on, the refried beans are the best I have ever had, in any restaurant, in any city, state or country. When I lived somewhere without Chuy's, I dreamt of the special nachos. The atmosphere is casual, funky, colorful and casual. Everyone is friendly, welcoming and warm. No joke, I have had everything on the menu (most before I went vegan over 2 years ago) and everything is good. When I was a meat eater, the steak burrito was amazing with Hatch Green Chile sauce. Is this my go-to spot for amazing food? Pfft. No. This is my go-to spot for I-hate-my-life on a Tuesday after a hectic day of work. It is comfort Tex-Mex at its worst (aka its best). Expect really bad quality melted cheese wrapped inside somewhat decent tortillas, dipped on okay salsa and smeared with not-so-bad guacamole. Expect feeling guilty loving it. Note: The fajitas are pretty good if you're willing to take diuretics the following three days to undo the damage. Salty, yes. The thing is, Chuy's is not bad. It's really not bad, damn it! It's just really bad for you and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it is my duty to point this stuff out, you guys. First off, I'm pretty biased towards Chuys. I grew up frequenting the original location in Austin, so I have some nostalgia for the place. This location has a lot of the charm of the original, albeit it does feel more like a chain. It's definitely tex mex, and it definitely feels no shame holding that title. From the original, it retains the homage to Elvis, the kitschy decor, and hilarious t-shirts, and for that I am thankful. The happy hour is great: $3.50 margaritas, and free chips, queso, and carnitas. Free food people. Free! They make the tortillas in house right in the middle of the restaurant. The menu is very mix-and-match, with the typical mexican food choicies of soft or crispy, ground beef or chicken, etc. Highlights for me are the big-as-yo-face burrito (actual name) and the enchiladas. read more

My coworkers and I go to Chuy's for happy hour about every other week. We enjoy the complimentary queso bar and their drink specials. We love sitting on the outdoor patio (aside from the one occurrence when a possum came up to our table...eek) because it's usually a little more quiet and we can actually hold a conversation without yelling. I've had a hard time finding things I enjoy eating off the menu. The only two dishes that I've enjoyed are the Monday special (enchiladas with a spicy sour cream sauce) and the Friday special (chicken enchiladas with a green chilie avocado sauce). So if I go on a Monday or Friday I'm usually happy. My husband and I enjoy taking out of town guests here for the atmosphere. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat, even though I'm not giving it 5 stars - it is a great place for some authentic Southwestern Mex. They use a lot of green chiles in their food, like New Mexico and Arizona. If you go during the Hatch green chile festival, the food is amazing! Happy Hour rocks here - chips and queso, drinks in the bar are discounted. A few of my favorite food items are the Mexi-Cobb salad served with the Creamy Jalapeno dressing. It is fantastic! Another good option are the enchiladas in so many flavors and styles as well as the fish tacos. Fish Tacos are a California import, and not easily found here in San Antonio. These aren't quite a "Rubios" taco, but they are pretty good! Negative things: Service can be slow, food can come out cold, charro beans taste like watered down chili, tortillas are good - but are dusted with too much flour and come out cold at times, some items aren't that great on the menu (I personally don't like the red sauces, but that is my opinion.) Positive things: Happy Hour, green chile sauces, creamy jalapeno dressing, fajitas, chile rellanos, enchiladas, chips and queso, atmosphere and personality of waitstaff. Salsa is ok. We've found that mixing the "hot" and the "mild" make for a better salsa. Best item on the menu, in my opinion, was taken off the menu and I'm still bitter about it. The Banditos used to be wheat tortillas, cheese and green chiles - deep fried little chimichangas. Guess they weren't a hit but there were my all time favorite appetizer. Oh well. read more

I really like the food and the service was awesome, however I looked over to a table next to mine and eventually realized that there was an interview going on during lunch. I had noticed initially a young lady walk in the store and the store employee eventually sit at the same table (it was kinda' dead customer wise at this time). He went through a few questions, prompted her for some responses, and then begins to view his phone. With his back facing my table, the manager was not facing the lady. Weird enough, this was coincided by seldom peeks off the phone screen, however he did speak loud enough for the restaurant to hear every word that came out of his mouth. The loud words were followed but consistent and vehement head shaking as if he was in absolute disbelief of what the lady said after each statement she made. What made it the most awkward, aside from the fact that every word spoken by the interviewer was over-the-top too loud for the circumstance of an employment interview and the continuously unwarranted head gesturing and hand waving and banging on the table (made only w/ the hand free of the cell phone btw) , was the fact that when your attention turned that way due to the noise and comments, I kept making inadvertent eye contact with the young lady interviewing for the job. From her position, and the interviewers loudly obnoxious comments and disgusting gesturing, I could only see his back and just over his shoulder enough for clear view of the phone's screen: the guy was playing Candy Crush Saga. At the conclusion of the interview I heard the interviewer guy state "sorry we are looking for more experience" and walk off immediately as the lady was still getting up from her seat. She walks by and exits the building, and that is that right? Just as my table was getting the check and cashing out with the server (just as I was looking at the check to sign) I hear a voice at the table ask about the 'food taste and service' received... as I look up I notice the person asking: it was the interviewing guy, the HEAD FREAKING MANAGER!
