This review is based on bar experience only. I stopped in for a quick drink. The bar is not full and the service was a bit slow but the drinks are good and the bartender is nice. The restaurant has a very cozy and upscale feel, the food presentation of the tables near the bar looks amazing and it smells delicious. I would recommend this restaurant for a date night or a quick drink. Side note, when I checked in there was an offer for a free appetizer if you purchased two meals. Not sure how long that will last for but it would be worth coming in for that! read more

I had really high hopes for this place so was pretty disappointed. We made reservations and when we got there realized there was no need. It was so dead they actually seated us in the bar because the restaurant was pretty much closed at 7pm. Cioppino is a great place to listen to live jazz and a comfortable yet upscale atmosphere. I prefer sitting in the bar section rather than the dining room. They recently started a Saturday brunch which is so good! Some items on the menu can be hit or miss, but the service is excellent and they make you feel like family, which is one of the reasons I keep coming back. A couple of my favorite dishes include beef carpaccio, shrimp and grits for brunch, and their homemade donuts. I must say I also love the bread and basil pesto dipping oil! It's so good! This was my first time at Cioppino and I came for brunch, which I didn't know was new for them. Our waiter was great! The food was amazing too. We shared the charcuterie board for a starter; I highly recommend it. I get charcuterie boards at almost every restaurant that has them and this one is definitely the top of my list. Came to hear Chris Jamison perform. (He is a former Voice candidate who sang with Adam Levine; has a better falsetto too. Last song was only one people shut up for. Show some dam respect!!! That aside, it's more casual in the lounge; walls opened for a nice evening and a skyline of Pittsburgh that you don't normally view. Food is not cheap. Branzino was good, a little overcooked for my taste; the rapini and orzo with tomatoes was great. If I wasn't so full I'd have cleaned the plate. Service was awesome; kept my companion from getting a $120 parking ticket. (DON'T park along the tracks. There are signs, but not where you would look for them - - across the street and on the building on the other side of the tracks!) Good wine list. I tried the Pinot, figured it would be good as it was from Williamette area. It was ok. My friend had a different red (blanking on what it was). They're not generous pours but prices are comparable to other upscale places. Friend had the muscles for her entree. Giant serving! Spinach salad with and without onions was good but the "warm bacon salad dressing" was barely warm and dumped on one side. So some mushrooms on one side were hot; other side of salad was not. What's for dinner? ‍ Sole (with potatoes & lemon caper sauce). I'm not a fan! But, I will be back! This is my first time here. It was a whole fish that was lightly battered & fried. Not my taste. It was sort of bland & needed more capers, salt & pepper. Plus, it was a little oily. I don't mind friedfish but I don't need reminded bu tasting the oil. However, my bartender was attentive & helped to resolve the matter without us even saying a word! I ordered a pineapple upside down cake for my drink. That turned out very good!! The second more than the first. It's not on the menu but he accommodated me. They had live jazz music!! The one guy was playing 2 instruments @ once! He played the simulated bass guitar with his left hand and the piano with his right hand @ the same time!!! The entire band was into it & did really good!! Went to Cioppino to celebrate my daughter's graduation with a party of 12. Pros- very accommodating with making and changing my reservations to a larger reservation and arriving early. Hostess very kind.Hash is really good and biscuit with gravy. Cons: waitress was horrible very inattentive restaurant was not busy waited over 30 minutes for drinks and refills. Waited almost 1.5 hours for our food. 5 people in our party food orders were wrong, food cold, one person don't eat eggs but eggs on the plate. Some people ordered the steak. Steak not done as ordered. Eggs over medium were sunny side up. This waitress never apologized after waiting forever for our food she comes out with small dishes of ketchup, then silverware but still no food. Outcome: the manager was extremely kind and offered to recook the food or refund and both in some instances because service was horrible. Much appreciated. Also noticed people that arrived way after us received there food in a timely manner. We went for a cocktail class and we pre paid online but then in person we were charged both tax and gratuity so our $68 per person quickly jumped to much higher. Very disappointed that we thought the $68 per person was the total, when we got an extra bill of about $40 for a couple of two people for tax and gratuity that was assumed vs allowing us to leave what we thought was fit. Anyway - I have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally had the opportunity recently. We went with a few friends and had an amazing dinner. The appetizers were amazing. We had a lobster dish and a scallop dish. Menu's rotate with what is seasonally available, so we got fresh seafood. I thought the wine selection was excellent as well. Our table split two very affordable bottles. For our main course, we had steaks, duck prosciutto stuffed ravioli, and another stuffed fish option. Steaks were grilled to perfection. My Wife had a stuffed fish entree that was delicious. I actually wiped my plate clean with the dinner rolls because the ravioli sauce was THAT good. Needless to say, there were no leftovers and we each finished out plates. The meal was capped off with dessert. I almost never leave room for dessert but we did it. The dessert platter was the way to go. It was a nice bite of everything on the menu. I prefer lighter fare for dessert and opted for a glass of Fernet Branca. Cioppino is a spot that I would recommend and totally try again when in the mood for a middle level steak house. Think Eddie V's or Napa Prime, but just at better and more reasonable cost. We don't often go to restaurants that focus on fish, but we're glad we picked this one. The Chilean sea bass was the definition of melt in your mouth with it flaking apart at the slightest pressure, leaving a juicy explosion of flavour in its wake. The halibut was also perfectly cooked with just the right amount of crispness seared in to the outside and a flaky, savoury interior. Even the mussels, of which I've never been particularly fond, were tasty. As for dessert, it was hard to pass up the Raspberry and Rose Cheesecake. I have mixed feelings on Cioppino. On one hand, the space in all three parts (dining room, bar, and cigar room) is really nice and pretty welcoming. The crowd is a bit more dressy at times, but overall, the vibe is more relaxed that one would expect. I've also had some pretty delicious menu items in our handful of visits (the tomato-based crab bisque on our last visit being one of them), but I've also had plenty of average food, as well (the gnocchi, which was made in-house, but served with a bland mixture of ingredients and overwhelmed by the use of excessive broccoli rabe, for example). They have a solid selection of wines and whisky, but the prices are a few dollars more than most places ($14 for a Balvenie Doublewood, for example, that's typically $11-12/pour), and as I mentioned in a tip left here: Watch out when you order a whisky. If you order a scotch, expect a double automatically. Also, expect to pay for that unwarranted double when your bill arrives. Did you order your whisky "neat?" Expect a $2 upcharge. None of this will be explained to you when ordering, so just be prepared to pay 133% of what's listed on the menu, plus $2 if ordered neat. Very strange approach, if you ask me, and I can't imagine many patrons being as forgiving as us. We've typically sat in the bar area, which was okay. The music can be a bit loud for casual conversation on Fridays. The jazz band is a decent trio/quartet...but not great. We've also done the cigar room experience, as well as the dining room experience. Both got the job done, but neither left us with any overly-positive impressions. So, you can see a theme here. Cioppino is a place that tries to do a lot of things right, and certainly has the potential, but ultimately slips in nearly every area. For the price, there's no excuse for falling short. Entree prices are high enough that a better experience can be had at numerous restaurants within a mile or so of Cioppino, if you're looking in the $25-45 range. Want to experience overpriced whisky? There are places with better selections and experiences close by. I feel less guilty paying $36 for a single ounce of harder-to-find bourbon at, say, Butcher and the Rye, than $23 for a double (that I didn't ask for) of run-of-the-mill scotch at Cioppino. We have no plans on returning, but the fact that we kept giving the place a chance should say that we recognize the potential (not to mention our desire to have another good place near home), but we've left underwhelmed too many times. If they worked harder at improving the experience (and making sure their staff acts with some professionalism near the bar when they don't think anyone is looking) instead of finding ways to inflate the check, we'd be able to recommend the place. As it is, save your money and time and explore some of the other excellent establishments Pittsburgh has at the moment. read more

Been there many times for happy hour, which is one of the better ones in the downtown area, though they're in the Strip District. Great selection of food on the bar menu which is all discounted for happy hour...a couple generous burgers, fried shark tacos, a Pittsburgh-style steak salad, and much more. He paid little attention to our table. every other table got bread and he didn't even ask. My wife and I celebrated our Anniversary here on a Saturday night. I made reservations about 3 weeks ahead of time. We were looking for a nice restaurant that received good Yelp reviews and one that we had never been to before. This one did both for us so we tried them out. I saw on their website that they have complimentary valet service after 5 on the weekends so we used that. I found it on the side of the restaurant and they parked our car while we walked in. They sat us in a four-seat table in the middle of the floor. It wasn't bad. We got a waiter by the name of Todd. He was an older gentlemen. A little slow but nice. He gave us the drink and the food menu to look over. On the Yelp app when you check in you can get a free appetizer here if you buy two entrees. I showed that to our waiter and he said he had never seen it before but he would check with his boss to make sure we could use it on any appetizer. He came back and he said we can choose whatever appetizer that we would like for free. Boom!!! That was great so we went with the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp came out and we received our own plates. There were two large shrimp on each of our plates with Artisan lettuce on the side. The shrimp with their homemade cocktail sauce was delicious. They gave so much Artisan lettuce on the plate I joked with my wife that this was a small salad. She then put some oil from the bread that they gave us on the lettuce and made a small salad. I did the same thing it was good! Speaking of the bread we destroyed that too. We don't usually eat bread but we were hungry and it was good. My wife ordered a drink that she enjoyed and I just had water. For our entrée I ordered the King Salmon and my wife ordered from their special menu of the day which was bass. It took a little while for our food to come out but it wasn't too long of a wait. When it came out it looked great. My wife really liked her fish that came with polenta and we ordered a side of scallops which here delicious too. My Salmon was good but It wasn't the best Salmon that I have tasted before. I say that because I usually prefer it more rare and they didn't ask how I preferred it but it was still really good 4 out of 5 Salmon. When I made my reservations I told them it was for our anniversary so they gave us complimentary cake for dessert. I didn't understand what our waiter was saying about the dessert when he brought out their dessert menu too. I thought he said we could pick either the cake or something off of their menu but he meant we can order something additional off of their dessert menu with our complimentary cake. So we had ice cream cake and 3 scoops of ice cream off of their dessert menu for dessert. I love dessert but my wife usually stays away from it but we both crushed the dessert. It was great. When we got out o eat at a decent restaurant we usually are done within an hour but this took us two hours. We still had a good time but service got slow there at the end. We went here for our anniversary dinner last night and had a great meal. The space was open and comfortable and our waiter was very friendly. They also validated 2 hours of parking above the restaurant which was great (I didn't even know there was parking up there before this trip). I tried the brute cava and a cocktail called berry simple or simply berry? They were both great. The cocktail was very fresh and not too sweet. If I didn't have to drive home I would have loved a second one. We share super fresh oysters with a mango habanero hot sauce (and traditional vinegar) that we loved. I had the short rib and my husband the sea bass that came highly recommended. The short rib was amazing and a huge portion, the fish was definitely a small portion but had this incredible salty browned crust on top that was mouth watering. The sides were all super tasty. We were both very happy with our meals. We shared the sampler plate for dessert even though the cinnamon rolls looked incredible and it was a good choice. All the elements were super tasty (the mini donuts with maple sauce inside were may favorite) and it is nice to have a couple bites of a bunch of different things. Cool dinner spot in Pittsburgh. Some friends and I were in town for the UT/Pitt game and we had dinner here last Friday. The staff is very accommodating and polite. The food is excellent. We had several appetizers; the cheese plate and calamari were excellent. I had a New York Strip with a scallop as my main course. It was excellent, the only disappointing part was I was expecting 'scallops' and only got one scallop. The drinks were great and the atmosphere was as well. The patio is also really cool. Our first experience at Cioppino was on Valentine's Day and we did not have the best experience but Dana gifted a food voucher to make up for it. We went to celebrate my girlfriends birthday and it could not have been any better. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection from small plates to dessert. I had the 22 oz ribeye with scallops as an enhancement. My girlfriend got the 8oz filet Oscar. We enjoyed ourselves at the cigar bar and ate dessert there. I came here for dinner on a Thursday night with a friend who so graciously used a gift card on me that I bought him. Talk about a pal. The service was excellent as our waiter was very knowledgeable and checked on us multiple times. He was friendly and helpful! I had the caesar salad with anchovies to start. For dinner I had the crab cakes with a side of bacon mac and cheese that came with it, it was not a side I purposely chose. I would not have put mac and cheese with crab cakes but would have preferred a veggie or a grain. Wow, we had an incredible dinner at Cioppino!! Highly recommend. We started with seasonal Old Fashion and the crab dip. It was perfectly suited for a warm evening on their patio. For our entrees, my dining partner got the new work strip with the layered potatoes (make sure you get those) and I got the forest mushroom pasta. It was SO good. Creamy and a little tangy from the goat cheese. Absolutely delicious. But the star of the show was actually dessert. The strawberry cheesecake sandwich was simply incredible. Crispy and creamy -- it was everything you'd want in a dessert. I'd go back just for another serving of that! read more
