I had a bad experience here. I ordered the pastrami appetizer and it was half gelatinous fat and the meat was so over salted I couldn't eat. Had dinner with friends at Citizen Public House and came away feeling a little mixed about the experience. There were some real highlights, but also enough misses to keep it from being a five-star visit. The standout of the evening was the service. Lari ("Lotti") took excellent care of us--attentive without being intrusive and genuinely welcoming. Even after we paid the bill, we never felt rushed to leave, which made for a relaxed evening catching up with friends. The cocktails were also outstanding. I ordered the Shuttlecock, a unique combination of vodka, sauvignon blanc, and prickly pear that was incredibly refreshing and perfect for a hot Arizona evening. The wine list is approachable rather than overwhelming, making it easy to find something enjoyable by the glass or bottle. We started with the Kilt Lifter Fondue, which was ideal for our group of four. The combination of sausage, bread, sliced pears, and creamy cheese fondue was delicious and a great way to kick off the meal. Unfortunately, the entrees were inconsistent. My wife's meatloaf was excellent, but my short ribs were noticeably dry. The tart cherry BBQ glaze was also much more tart and bitter than expected and didn't complement the meat particularly well. Our friends, however, couldn't stop talking about the chopped salads, which are mixed tableside and seem to be one of the restaurant's signature dishes. Dessert was another miss. We shared the featured rum cake with raspberries and strawberries, but the cake itself was dry. The atmosphere is also a bit deceptive. At first glance, the low lighting and cozy booths suggest an intimate dining experience, but the noise level was surprisingly high. It was difficult to carry on a conversation without raising our voices. Overall, we had a decent time thanks to the great service, cocktails, and appetizers. That said, the noise level and inconsistency in the food make me hesitant to return for another full dinner. I would consider coming back to try the chopped salad for myself, though. read more

I had very high expectations for this establishment since our friend had rated his meal a10/10, prompting him to invite us with him two days after his first experience. We were lucky enough that it happened to be restaurant week (1 appetizer, 1 entree, & 1 dessert for the price of $55!) My partner opted for the burrata paired with their noble bread, crispy salmon, & midnight brownie. Our favorites were their burrata & crispy salmon, with our not so favorites being the rest. The chopped salad was mediocre at best, nothing worth coming back for. The short ribs were overcooked, making it extremely dry. The blueberry pudding cake was incredibly dense and dry. The brownie was as hard as a rock, making it difficult to pick up a piece without breaking the plate while at it. Overall, my partner and I were quite disappointed with our meals. Stopped in for dinner and were not disappointed. We started with the calamari which was so good. The person I went with thought it had a spicy kick, but I didn't taste any heat. Dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives was very good. We both then got the meatloaf happy hour portion which was the perfect size and truly delicious. From the salad to the main course, it's bang-on with the flavors and preparation of the dish. It was actually a highlight of the trip! Where to begin! We hadn't been here in years, and honestly this place does not get nearly enough credit or attention in the Scottsdale food scene for how good it really is. It was a great starter to share with my date. The short rib dinner served on a bed of polenta mash falls off the bone with a fork. It was pretty quiet on a Monday during happy hour, but there were still a lot more people than I expected. The amazing chopped salad is reduced to $15 and per our server is the same size as the regular menu salad, which is $23. If you haven't had this chopped salad before, it is the most delicious thing I have ever tasted. It is sweet and savory and crunchy and soft all in one. The buttermilk dressing is delicious. Try it if you like smoked salmon. We also had the chili crunch chicken wings, which were only $1 each and really tasty. My husband got the burger, I tasted a bite and it was good. They only do medium rare or medium well, but the medium well was melt in your mouth and not overcooked. The only thing I did not enjoy was the cash money cocktail- it tasted like tequila and lemon with a hint of melon, and I did not really get any of the other flavors. I stopped by for dinner last night and got a chopped salad and a glass of wine. The salad was okay, it had a few too many ingredients in it that did not go together (for me). My boyfriend got the chowder and loved it! Next I got the crispy salmon with a cauliflower cheesy mash, and the sauce it came in... decadent and rich and savory and creamy and wow. The sauce made the dish! But the salmon also had a nice crunch to it. My boyfriend got the fair trade ribs and he liked the ribs but not the greens (he's picky with his veggies though). Drove into Phoenix during the day and were exploring Old Town Scottsdale when we started getting hungry. We walked by Citizen Public House, which we saw opens at 4 pm, and decided to head in. Since we arrived right at opening, the restaurant was empty and we were seated immediately. Our server greeted us quickly, explained the menu, and took our drink orders. We decided on the signature chopped salad, the crispy salmon, and the fair trade short ribs. The chopped salad is especially unique here. Instead of the usual lettuce-and-bacon combination, this one features smoked salmon, couscous, and arugula, all topped with a delicious buttermilk herb dressing. It is lighter than a traditional chopped salad but even more flavorful, and I can see why it is considered their signature dish. The crispy salmon was cooked perfectly and came out exactly as ordered, medium well. The fair trade short ribs were also a standout dish. It was my first time trying braised short ribs with coffee notes, and the flavor worked surprisingly well, offering a nice contrast to the wine reduction typically used with this preparation. The dish also comes with a tart cherry-BBQ sauce, but the ribs are excellent even on their own with just the coffee rub and reduction. Expect to spend around fifty to sixty dollars per person. We told our server we were in a bit of a rush, and the kitchen brought out our dishes within minutes, which I really appreciated. Overall, it was a great experience with friendly staff, a relaxed and classic American atmosphere, and delicious food with creative twists on traditional dishes. Generous portion of the meatloaf along with the combination of flavors making the meat moist and tasty. Now, the chopped salad was very unique as it had couscous which was a nice touch but did not realize lettuce is not part of their chopped salad. Salad was good with a slight kick and I had no problems eating everything. The only down side on the prefixe were the two dessert choices both of which were very heavy to one's palette. We also got the pork belly for appetizer which had kimchi and a yummy sauce. As a Korean, I loved the concept and thought it was pretty unique. Also, I got the Mac and cheese as I'm a Mac and cheese connoisseur and was quite confused as there seemed to be a tomato puree of some sort on top. After trying it, I was quite into the combo as the tomatoes were sweet in a way. Super unique as well! The short ribs were good and I thought the portion was great for the price.
