This review is based on a Door Dash order. Ordered ribs, a sandwich, some sides and a dessert. Two items were missing - the sandwich, and the dessert. The ribs were cold, overcooked and tough. It felt like they said "oh, this is a Door Dash order, let's grab this rack of ribs over here that have been sitting around since Tuesday". In a state saturated with vinegar based BBQ, City Barbeque gives customers a break by offering an array of sauces to compliment the meats. A chain from Columbus, Ohio, City is different than most of the BBQ places I've been to in Carolina. It's more northern style and offers visitors with a variety of meats including turkey, chicken, ribs, brisket, pork, etc. I enjoy eating at this chain. The food is always consistent. Meats tend to be well cooked, yet remain juicy and tender and the cashiers are typically upbeat and friendly. In addition, the sides are worthy, rather than traditional Carolina boring sides like only baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad. Sure, they have those, but many more, too. The staff here isn't shy about loading you up, either. Look at the photos I've posted. You'll notice large plates for cheaper than places like The Pit, which are far overrated and much more expensive. There's value here and good sweet tea/lemonade. When in the neighborhood for BBQ, whether it be for lunch or dinner, with a large group, or solo, there's a place and meal for you at City Barbeque. We had City Barbeque catered today at work for lunch. Everything was phenomenal. The BBQ was super juicy, and even though this is probably blasphemous to North Carolinians, but I like my BBQ smothered in BBQ sauce. If you like your's the same way, the brushfire sauce is the way to go. It's not really spicy, just a little tangy. I'm not a huge fan of the coleslaw, as they do theirs grated with a vinegar base, and I prefer country style with a mayonnaise base. Either way, it tasted delicious in the middle of a BBQ sandwich. I haven't had a chance to visit the actual restaurant, but I'm hoping I can dine there soon. read more

5 stars all the way! City BBQ is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in the area. After attending an amazing Yelp event, we decided to come back and use our coupons we received for free platters. The food was amazing and they give you A LOT of it. I ordered the brisket sandwich and made it a platter with the baked beans and mac and cheese. I also added a piece of cornbread on the side. The baked beans (which also has brisket in it) is amazing and rich in flavor. The mac and cheese wasn't anything spectacular, but it was still good and extra cheesy mac and cheese. As for the brisket, they really piled it generously on the sandwich and it was so tender. I also got a lot of burnt ends on the brisket, which gave it an awesome smoky flavor. It was SO MUCH FOOD. I ate about half of my meal and took the rest home. Without using the coupon, it would be about $12 for the meal. But it is worth every penny due to the massive portions and the taste is completely on point. I also enjoyed that you don't have to ask for any sauces to go with your meal. They have bottles conveniently located on all the tables and also near the beverages, with some to-go sauce containers. They also keep to-go containers readily available for your sides and sandwiches. They must know that they give so much food that most people need to take some home. They had a balloon artist going around for the kids and that guy was talented! He said that he always has some sort of family entertainment at City BBQ on Friday nights, so this is a great Friday night spot if you are looking for great food and a little bit of entertainment for the kids. This is one of my favorite places for BBQ in the area. Yes, I like it more than The Pit based on what I've tried at both places so far. The pork ribs are fall off the bone tender with a lot of flavor. The brisket is tender and moist, which is a big bonus for me as I usually think it's too dry and chalky at most bbq places. Sides are the usual fare served at bbq joints. If you eat onsite, you have access to unlimited bbq sauce and drinks. The staff is courteous and friendly. I'm impressed at how efficient they are even during their busy hours even though I've seen them go out of their way to make sure customers are happy with their orders. Ordering is a little confusing with the menu boards posted on the wall and the way it's divided up. If I had to figure it all out I wouldn't have. Thankfully the guy at the register helped me out, even pointing out a small sign with lunch specials that I'd completely missed. I opted for the pulled pork which is good, but a little too salty. The baked beans are rich, dark and delicious! I would return just for them. The vinegar slaw is good, but the rough chop leaves it in big pieces that are not only hard to fork it, but even get it in my mouth. I don't like slaw geriatric style (chopped so fine it looks pre-chewed), but choping this into pieces just a bit smaller would be helpful. The peach cobbler was delicious and like the sides, the portion is very large, although I could have eaten those baked beans all day! The staff is super nice and sincerely aims to please. Between my boyfriend and myself, we ordered two meals. One pulled pork with corned bread and mac n' chees and one beef brisket with beans and hush puppies. I asked the cashier which was better, and her response was: "don't let me decide, I'll get you a taste!" what?! how awesome was that? As we dove in, we both decided we had ordered entirely too much food. But for $22 how could you not? The sweet tea was delicious (trust me, I'm an expert ;) ) We both decided that next time we'd skip the beans and mac n'cheese. They weren't bad, but the cornbread and hush puppies were just that much better! Definitely will be coming back. Service, atmosphere, and food were all on par today! Nothing special here and pretty hit or miss. Sometimes it's above par chain BBQ, sometimes it's "why the heck did I just spend this much money?" Ribs - When you get a good batch, they're pretty decent thanks to the sauce selections. When you get a bad batch, they're tough, dry and taste old. Brisket - Sometimes there's flavor, sometimes there's not. Sometimes it's a little dry, sometimes it's not. Never really any smoke ring on it and if you do get some fat, it's not much. Sauce helps. Pulled Pork- Probably the most consistent of their meats, but still fluctuates a bit. When it's good, it's really good. When it's not, it's edible. Once again, their sauces help. Sides - Same thing. With the exception of the potato salad (which is 5-star quality), the sides can be packed with flavor or bland. Collards are sometimes fibrous, sometimes melt-in-your-mouth. Mac n cheese is pretty good. Texas Toast and cornbread are typically spot on. I could go on with each item I've eaten from here (had most of the menu - chicken is a real standout) but you get the picture. If this place was consistent, it'd be a four or five star review for sure (maybe not 5 because it's a little pricey). But in a pinch for BBQ (especially delivery), it'll do. Meh. read more

This was alright - some of the items very good and some of it was bad. The good - gumbo - get this. Very tasty. The cornbread - amazing - dense but very moist, I love that there were still tiny parts that were a bit dough-y. The smoked chicken - really good. The so so - green beans with bacon - I've defintiely had better. The ribs, brisket were alright - nothing special but not bad. The bad - pulled pork - apparently there are 2 types you can get? But we ordered the sampler and it came with the driest pulled pork ever. Very unimpressed and a bit of a waste. I heard that we were supposed to order the one with vinegar - but the girl didn't ask us so we didn't know. Ordered Christmas Dinner 2 weeks in advance for pick-up on Christmas eve. Upon arriving to the restaurant, our order was not immediately found in their system. After 20 minutes of waiting, a fresh order was prepared for us. When we arrived home, we noticed that the cooking instructions were missing. So we called the store for guidance. The manager that helped us at the store offered to drive to our home to deliver the cooking instructions. When he arrived at our home, aside from the instructions, he also brought an extra pound of beef brisket and banana pudding for our inconvenience. Not only did the manager acknowledge the inconvenience to us, but he went the extra mile to ensure we stay customers. Great experience trying City bbq for the first time. Since it was my first time, the guy at the register let me sample the brisket, pulled chicken and pulled pork. Ended up ordering the brisket and chicken. Sauce does come on the side here, which was a new thing for me coming from Kansas City. Absolutely delicious. The pulled chicken, jalapeno and cheddar sausage, and a side of potatoe salad are my favorite things to order everytime I come here. Eventually I'll try more but this combo is so delicious. The chicken is juicy, the potatoe salad is creamy, and the sausage is just delicious (please keep it forever). The selection of bbq sauce is great. They definitely have a little bit of everything. I am not a fan of Carolina vinegar based bbq sauce (I know, I know.. clutch your pearls lol) from anywhere but these guys have such great options I guarentee you'll find one you like. My favorites are the sweet and the bourbon (I believe this was a special small batch but I have asked for it twice and they had it both times on separate occasions). Great southern food! Casual atmosphere and you order food in line. Staff is freindly and offered me a sample of the potato salad when I had a question about it. Food comes out hot and fresh. I've been here twice (I got a card for points and was told Monday is double points) and had potato salad, green breans and corn pudding. Half a pound of meat is typical and the turkey was thickly sliced with a great smokey flavor. The pulled pork was also tasty and there is a variety of sauces available. Sliced pickels, lemons are also by the drink area. Outdoor patio has plenty of space with wooden picnic tables or metal chairs/tables. Umbrellas for shade. I can't believe I've never written a review before for City BBQ! This place is amazing! I LOVE the brisket, well everything is amazing. Pulled pork, sausage, desserts, service, and the HOT BAR FOR SAUCE!! Whatever style BBQ you like, sweet, tangy, spicy, vinegar. ..your choice, and did I say hot?? All they give you is a hot, tender, beautiful piece of meat, then you add the sauce, and not cold, sat on the table all day sauce (although it's there too in case of a sauce emergency) it's hot like your food!!! I left today with a small sense of sadness, and a LOT of JOY though. This may be our last trip to this location. It is approx 1hr 20min on a good traffic day, & now it will be about 45 min to a new location in Durham. If you want to find out how they prepare and cook Ohio style 'Que, then City Barbeque is the place to go. The Beef Brisket, Pork, and Chicken are familiar but the taste is noticeably different than North Carolina style Que. The meat is slow cooked, moist, and smoky but the sauce is not the North Carolina signature vinegar based pulled pork from Eastern North Carolina. One thing they did finally add to their menu is fried okra. They do have excellent fried cucumber pickles which are a nice side. The desserts are limited but tasty. They have an assortment of beverages which are kept very cold. Worth checking out if you don't mind standing in line during peak service hours. They have a loyalty card to reward frequent buying customers. Get one. If you see a man nicknamed "Pork Chop" at the store, then tell him I sent you. Their pickup service was fast and fantastic simply order online, then go park in the designated parking spot You will receive a text. However the staff person was just finishing up with another customer. She signaled she would be right back, went in, got our order, opened the passenger side door and left the bag on the seat, closed the door. She was well protected as was my husband. The ribs here are awful. I have given this place/location 2 chances on the ribs and I have been nothing but disappointed- I like city bbq but I wouldn't come here again for it. I am from another state where I would frequently go to city, but the location here isn't even standard when it comes to ribs- my first experience the ribs were cold and this time they were overcooked- like they cooked them and then Cooked them again. The brisket was yummy and very tender but once it gets cold the fat gets congealed a bit and alters the taste and texture. I was very surprised with the Turkey tho. It was tender and juicy. I thought it would be very dry and even the next day and reheated, it was still juicy. As for the toast reheated, not very good. It became very rubbery. Went to Center Bbq for the 1st time for lunch today and I will definitely be back! I went @ 11:30 am because I heard they get busy quick. I ordered the pick 2 Meats (i chose pulled chicken and brisket) with took sides (I picked corn pudding and the baked beans). Of course there was sweet tea to drink because what goes better with bbq? The food came out super fast and oh my goodness! So much food! They do not skimp on portions. They had a bunch of different bbq sauces from original, Carolina, sweet... I chose sweet because that's what I like but there are many options to suit your fancy. I started with the pulled chicken and it was so good. Moved onto the brisket and wow, or was so flavorful and with the bark it had it didnt even need sauce! Next I tried the corn pudding. And that's where I stayed for a long time. It was so good! I think I could eat it everyday! I had a quick bite of the baked beans and they were delicious but there was so much food! It could have happily filled 2 people or been 2 meals! If I lived closer I would be having the leftovers for dinner tonight! The staff was very helpful, the restaurant was clean and lunch was such a great experience. He was extremely friendly and helpful. He promotes the food and the establishment. The man deserves recognition from the company for his customer service skills. So yes, customer service was definitely 5 starts. The Food: Delicious!!! My husband ordered the two meat combo and I ordered the ribs. Plenty of food, definitely enough to share. We also orders the corn pudding which was amazing. Served warm and big enough to share. Prices: Reasonable and fair. Overall, the service, taste of food, price, quality and quantity of food were excellent. I would definitely return and recommend . Lastly, the chocolate cake, amazing. Thanks Jerome, nice gesture. It is sometimes difficult to get really enjoyable BBQ when you don't eat pork. I know, its blasphemous. After running errands last week, my husband and I stopped in for some take out. I was really hungry, but let me tell you, that didn't change how amazing it tasted. I ordered brisket and smoked turkey with sides of sweet vinegar slaw and corn bread. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was when my husband went to grab a slice of brisket and it literally fell apart. That takes real talent. The brisket was tender and juicy and melt in your mouth. The turkey was also just as tasty. I really liked that they had different choices for sauce. I seriously wanted to try every single one of them, but I settled for just the original and one that was mustard based. Both were very delicious. As for the sides, I very possibly could have eaten an entire tray of their cornbread. It was light and flavorful. Not too sweet, just a little bundle of goodness.
