I love this place. The brisket is smash-city! If you go here do not, I mean DO NOT forget to try the corn pudding, it is a really perfect combination of sweet and savory. The macaroni is really good too. Also, if you get the brisket be sure to specify what type of 'ends' you want. You can get lean to fat. I personally prefer a little bit of char on mine, and go for the mid-bark. They have a pretty good selection here of sauces and condiments to complement the meats, and also a really good texas toast. The sauces vary from sweet, to tangy, quite spicy and HOT. My favorite is the mustard sauce. I have been here many times and have not had a bad experience yet. We recently found City BBQ and have been to this location several times. We love the food and staff. We did call in a carry out last night for the first time. The only complaint we had was that they forgot the BBQ sauce for all four of our beef brisket meals. The brisket was still good but not as good as when there is sauce as it was a little dry. We live 14minutes away so it wasn't convenient to just drive back. As our luck would have it, we were also out of BBQ sauce at home lol. We will definitely be back as this is the only time there has been an issue with our order. I also recognize that I could have gotten my own sauce from the side counter where they have it set out for customers who are dining in. Just ate here today with my family. Found this place on yelp. Visiting from Chicago. The food here is great!!! We ordered the judge sampler. It says it fees 2 people. I say 3 or 4. We definitely had food left over. It came with 2 sides. We got collard and Mac and cheese. I wasn't crazy about their Mac and cheese. I've had better in NC. Collard was good though. It also came with Texas toast and cornbread. The Texas toast was amazing. I personally like my cornbread sweeter but it was still good. They have a variety of BBQ sauce options. Even a vinegar based one of you want a lighter choice and a spicy choice if you are into that. Meat is soooo good even without the sauce. Most tender brisket and ribs I've ever had. When you're in North Carolina there always so many options for some barbecue. There are always places that are mom and pop and hole in the walls with family recipes but this is a place that is a chain and it is one of my favorites. It won't replace the family run business but it is a good choice for a quick barbecue. I like the brisket and a side of baked beans and potato salad. You can always tell a good barbecue place by the bark on the meat and the potato salad. They also have a wide selection of barbecue sauces that cover the tomato base to an original and then to the great vinegar-based Southern style barbecue sauce. When you walk into the place it's always packed and the smell of the smoker just brings back so many memories to when I was a kid and would go to family barbecues. read more

Had eaten here about a year ago and was not impressed. Decided to try it again today and was rather disappointed. Fairly expensive which would be fine if it were better food. We are visiting from Maryland and don't have a City Bbq. We stay home in Cary for an unplanned event so we tried grub hub delivery for 1st time with a trusted old comfort food chain: City BBQ. Ordering was easy. Deliver was quick. Sadly, quality was short of expectations. The green beans were perfect with a generous bacon. The baked beans were too heavy handed with molasses but that could just be personal preference. The pulled pork portion was generous but mostly fat. It was swimming in grease. A picture attached. It was extremely salty. After a home second pull, sort, and a quick water rinse, it was good. It made four big sandwiches with a lot of fatty sections left. We used the perfect vinegar sauce. First time we went in. We were there around 7:45-8:00pm. They close at 10pm. We had seen the place many times and decided to try it out. Unfortunately we never got to eat. They were out of brisket, pork and chicken. So they only had sausages and ?turkey. Also VERY poor attitude from girl behind the serving counter at the end of the counter. Very impressive quality BBQ. This place is worlds above the slop Smithfields calls food, and way better than the much over hyped The Pit in downtown Raleigh. Although offering the traditional eastern NC style BBQ, they provide plenty of other styles which is super welcome, especially in this area. We ate the pulled pork and brisket. Both were exceptional, along with the three BBQ sauces they serve. The sides were very good (except for the fries noted below.) The baked beans were some of the best I've had, the Mac and cheese and hush puppies respectable. I look forward to trying some of the others next time. The service was good and the employees pleasant and helpful. My only ding would be the fries. Though the potatoes are cut fresh, they are just way too soggy. My wife and I were told by a friend that this place was awesome and that they had a wonderful experience. Mind you, every time I drove by this place I would breathe in the smoke wafting from their kitchen so I was excited to try them out. Having lived in Texas and also having prepared brisket at home both on the grill and in the oven, something seriously important was missing....smoked flavor. The meat was moist but devoid of real brisket flavor. I even went as far as placing a piece of it on the texas toast provided and all I could taste was the bread. Not good when a beautiful piece of brisket is placed on a piece of bread. I even tried to eat just a piece of the bark, and even that was flavorless. The most egregious mistake was lack of smoky flavor. Nothing on the plate smelled like it was smoked or barbecued!!!! The smoked sausage, oh my goodness... it was barely browned, and tasted like a mix between kielbasa and bologna. My wife makes a mean pot of baked beans...it was a shame to call what she was served, baked beans. My green beans were just ok...seriously just ok. The best thing on our platter were the french fries. The serving was HUGE (too much) but it was teh best tasting item on the platter. How sad is it to spend $32 and the only thing worth eating was the order of fries? I joked with my wife that I wish I knew the lady sitting next to us with her dog, because I figured the dog might enjoy eating what we were about to throw away. Her response was classic: "the dog is going to ask if it is organic" .... I chuckled, because I knew in her mind she was probably also saying "what? am I homeless?" Needless to say, it wasn't even worth talking to management because there was nothing they could do short of start from scratch actually barbecuing some food that would make a difference. Having grown up in Memphis, I have been craving a smoked turkey, so we decided to order the smoked turkey breast for Thanksgiving from City Barbeque. The good: The turkey was juicy and delicious, with just the right amount spices and smokiness. The bad: We ordered 2 weeks in advance. The prices were $45 for a turkey breast and $79 for a whole turkey. A bit outrageous, but I was out to curb my craving. We opted for the turkey beast, assuming that it would be sufficient for the two of us; and we'd have enough to freeze for sandwiches later. To our dismay, when we picked up the turkey beast, we were charge the aforementioned $45, but for only HALF a turkey breast. I mentioned to the person that rang me up that the receipt said $45 for half a turkey breast, and nowhere on the prices listed did it mention that it was for half a breast. Why would I pay $45 for half a breast, when I could get a whole turkey for $79 which would include a whole breast... the pricing makes no sense, and is not what was advertised. The person told me it was in fact a whole breast. I checked the bag when I got home... nope, this was only half a breast (one piece of meat with no bone)... So instead of the expected 5-6 pound breast, we ended up with a 2.5-3 pound half breast for $45. Feeling ripped off... I will not be back. read more

This would have been a 5-Star review except for a few grievous errors. Let me start by saying that "Glenn" has to be the best employee working at City BBQ. That guy is nothing less than great! (not sure why he is not the manager), because the manager should have been paying attention to the fact that the food orders were not getting out on a timely basis. My Wife and I were back for our second visit, our first being a total let down on food quality. The second visit was a huge improvement over the first! The food was great.. except, and here is where the ratings began to drop: We arrived a bit after 5:00pm yesterday (Friday, the 24th). There was a bit of a line, and it was proceeding quite slowly. We ordered a City deluxe sampler, a side salad, and a $30 gift card for my father-in-law. Within a minute of paying, I noticed that our sides; the salad, gumbo, and corn pudding were already on a tray, placed on the counter. For the next several minutes, we stood there watching what appeared to be nothing more than chaos. A lot of moving and shaking with no real results. There was not any rhythm or order to the food delivery process, and the employees were clearly frustrated. So by the time our sampler meats were put in front of us and we sat down to eat, the gumbo and corn pudding were barely room temperature. That said, the gumbo and corn pudding was still delicious! The ribs were quite edible this time, tender and tasty. We left happy, full, and carrying home some leftovers. This would have been a 4-star review (especially with Glenn's presence), but as I sat down to write this review, while chewing on a leftover rib, I suddenly realized... we never got any pulled pork that was supposed to be on the Sampler! Ambience: Clean, brightly lit, good place for families/groups. Outdoor seating. Service: Unbelievably helpful, proactive, nice, and generous. Gave us free samplers since it was our first time - and by sample, I mean half-pound of brisket, a free chocolate cake, and a peach cobbler. Food: Uh oh. When you live in one of the four major areas that American BBQ is named after, you have to be good to be compete. These guys from Chicago made a really nice brisket. But their ribs were so-so. And everything else was inedible. Most of the sides were so insanely salty they just got thrown immediately in the trash. The other sides tried to mask their not-so-great taste behind tons of fat (eg, beans were drowning in soggy bacon, the mac-and-cheese wasn't worth the calories). The chocolate cake and cobbler tasted like cheap bulk-made food you'd get in a school cafeteria. If you get one bad thing, you can complain. But when lots of things are bad -- there is a problem. The Loop uses a similar system on Duke's campus and has a MUCH larger customer load than the Cary City BBQ yet has no problem keeping the line moving. Why? They space out the sqftage between where people order and where people pick up their food. With your current system you end up with a bottleneck where people waiting for their food prevent the line of people wanting to order from being able to move. Anyone who has been to a Smithfield's BBQ during their busy lunch hours would also agree that City BBQ is just doing it wrong. Give people those light up buzzer things after they order their food and let them hang out at their table socializing while waiting to pick up their food. Or hell, just buy a microphone and call out numbers the old fashioned way. "First, I should mention that the flavor you should expect is that of hickory wood smoke and some light seasoning... we do not put vinegar on our meat like many places do, and we only use the finest pork shoulder, whereas many other places give you all the other pig parts too (yes, they are flavorful and often the reason for the vinegar). " Should probably have someone familiar with NC BBQ raising the pom poms for City BBQ as this just does not make sense at all. The other pig parts are flavorful but require vinegar? I can't even begin to wrap my head around what logic (or lack thereof) is being used in this sentence. My husband and I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was packed! But there was still tables to sit at inside, or outside. The line was long but we got through it quick. I had a half rack of ribs with baked beans, and mac cheese. My husband got a pulled pork sandwich and we shared the sides. We also each had a specialty soda out of the cooler which was great! My ribs were good. Nice amount of smoke and good bark on the ribs. My husband liked my ribs better than his sandwich but that was good as well. They offer 4 warmed bbq sauces, pickles, onions, and a few other condiments to add to your bbq. The mac and cheese was just okay but my bake beans were delicious! My all time favorite BBQ place in Cary. Great soft tender beef, pork and chicken. I like the family sampler to get a little bit of everything. So yummy good. So I am a native Texan and I am always on the lookout for good brisket. When friends told me about City BBQ I had to make the trip from Durham to check in out. While I have learned to appreciate NC BBQ over the past decade, I have a soft spot for good brisket and I think that City BBQ does a pretty good job. Nice bark and very moist and tender. The rub is a bit different and I couldn't find a sauce that really worked well with it. From a comparative perspective I think Q Shack has the best brisket in the area and while City BBQ is decent it's on the average side when compared to joints back home. On par with Dickey's I would say. I'll stop again if I'm back in the area but probably won't make a special trip. read more

I must have eaten at a different place than the one all the hyped up reviewers are talking about. I have eaten good barbecue before, however I didn't get any here. First, they need to change the way the put out food orders. I really didn't like 5 or 6 customers standing over my food hacking up phlegm and snot over my order and looking to see if it is their order.This is while the staff set different items on the counter for 3-4 orders then wait a minute or five for the next item. Put it out all at once. The BBQ pork was unimpressive, dry, and tasteless- unless you added sauce. Smoke flavor was weak. Person with me got the over priced dry brisket. Portions were extremely skimpy for the price we paid. I hate adding sauce to pork for flavor, but here I had to, and I added a lot. There are about 4 sauces to chose from. The sides are ridiculously small and taste like the lunch lady from your elementary school cafeteria made them. Don't get the mac and cheese unless you like out of the box Kraft, seriously. However, cornbread was decent and actually the high point for the meal. With locations spread about the east coast and midwest, you'd think the corporate design would overpower the quaintness that comes with most barbecue servings. That's not the case. Rarely would I allow a chain bbq spot to fall within my graces, but this one does. It's actually pretty commonplace and casual while staying true to flavor and quality food and customer service. No pretenses. Country cowgirl time in what is surely an old redone restaurant. Smoked meats. Enjoy it naked, bunned, or by the pound. Dine in, carry out, or event catering. Eating on site allows you endless access to drinks and sauce. That barbecue sauce is the kind you can drink too. Try not to get drunk on sauce. I went to an event at City BBQ last November and because of Elite crew, we got to try more than your typical dining experience would allow and even toured the grill area. For starters, the rib tasting was riveting. I tried the pulled pork, baked beans, pickles, rolls, slaw -- not usually my thing, and brisket. Plus the extra smokey bbq thrown on the meat added a nice extra flavor. Desserts were to die for with fresh and light banana pudding and vanilla wafers, a chocolate brownie, and an apple cobbler. Staying in Cary for a conference and wanted to try this place. Ordered a deluxe city sampler at 7:30pm. Maybe I caught a bad time but my experience was not a happy one. Two of the four meats were consistent but consistently dry. Ribs - dry chewy old?. A lot of meat but dry and chewy. Why? Chicken - a half chicken but the beast was over cooked and dry. The wing was cooked so long nothing was left to bite Brisket - this was better and wasn't badly overcooked. Used the sauce to add flavor. Overall texture okay but no flavor. Pulled pork - same as brisket and mixed on my plate with the chopped brisket so I had to separate visually to try it separately. Always use sauce on pulled pork so not sure if it had Amy flavor on its own. Corn bread - not sure if this is their norm but both loafs were dark brown and tasted over baked. It was very dry. Not sure if Monday nights are slow for them but it felt like our order cleaned out the lunch leftovers? The sides saved the meal for us. We chose green beans with bacon and corn pudding. Loved the flavors the green beans gave out with the bacon. If I ever go back I would get a large side of this. The corn pudding was also tasty and moist. There is a menu just inside the restaurant entrance , it's located just in side the front door. Horrible place as if you stop to read it, other patrons entering can't understand why you blocking the door and subsequently give you the stink eye. Menu needs work. The prices are just....Meh. I'm no cheapskate by any stretch of the imagination, but I would like to have my fair share when paying a significant amount for BBQ and 'fixin's'. You walk out thinking, how did I just spend $40 and only get the Kids Meal? Then there is the Tip.....which I never skimp out on and give 20%. After leaving....."what the hell did I leave a tip for"? You pick your food off of a serving line, pull your beer out of an ice bucket, get your silverware and napkins and then commence to sit and eat. Once you have finished, you get up and then stow your tray and silver in the box located at the exit of the restaurant. NO NEED FOR TIP. The meats - I've gone with co-workers and split a chicken and rack of ribs with one of them. Then we both had the audacity to get sides. Me the baked beans & collards. I needed to be rolled out of there. The chicken was fall off the bone tender, not heavily sauced (good because i can do that myself). The ribs, had a great smoke line and char. very well done IMHO. The brisket sandwich i had on a seperate occasion was very pleasing as was the chopped chicken. The starches - mac & cheese i'd pass on, the potatoes and the like are the usual family bbq fare. pretty good. But those baked beans!! They've got some sort of addictive substance in them!! (I think it's brisket) Well sign me up for seconds. I thought I liked a bbq joint around the corners beans but they are my new favorite. Now the veggies - collards are better than average, and they do have salads if you prefer not cooked veggies. The draw back - seating. Lunch time gets busy, and they appear to bus folks in from time to time (I'm not kidding, a senior center had a lunch outing during my last visit). Thanks to my friends at Yelp, I received a free sandwich platter certificate at a recent event, so we went back to try them out unrehearsed! I am GF so traded the certificate in for a platter. It was a crazy amount of food. The pork bbq was excellent...eastern NC style with your choice of sauces on the side. I am a slaw snob and they have their own unique take...it's vinegar based but compliments the bbq perfectly. Also the green beans and bacon is yummerific. We will definitely be back. The best part of this place is the aroma in the parking lot. I found the meat dry and short on flavor. The vinegar slaw is bland, and the baked beans way too sweet. The portions are decent but the price is high for what you get. My recommendation is to get a Wendy's sandwich and eat it in the parking lot outside City. My husband and I ate there today for lunch. It was our first time there. The line was long but it moved quickly. Service was friendly. I ordered Lo Lo's Pulled Pork (it comes with slaw). Both had excellent flavor, but the portion of BBQ was too small for the price. At first I thought I had mistakenly received a kid's plate until I saw my husband's meal was the same size. I am a moderately active petite woman (120lbs) and it was not enough for me. IIt definitely was not enough for my 6'2" hubby. I had to go home to eat something else before I went back to work so I would not be starving by dinner. I would have happily paid a couple more dollars for a larger portion. The slaw it's served with was almost the same portion size as the meat. Both time and money wasted. read more
